SCHINDLER HOUSE PERFORMANCE HALL ADDITION

Schindler House Los Angeles, California Given the existing Schindler House, the challenge is to design a performance hall addition to the case study house, using masonry as a primary material. With a flexible definition of programmatic spaces, the design recognizes two major elements of a performance hall: the stage and the audience. The proposed configuration allows for interchangeable stage and audience spaces, and the form is derived from the L-shaped module recurring in the Schindler House.

LOS ANGELES CORNFIELDS RESEARCH INSTITUTE Los Angeles State Historic Park (The Cornfields) Los Angeles, California With the historic cornfield and train station preserved as a state park, we are to design an institution (with a maximum of 200 sf ) to accommodate for the living and social needs of three researchers. Provided with a prefabricated bathroom and furniture, the research station must also use canvas as a primary material. Since the given amount of building space is limited, my approach is to establish movable parts to define flexibility in programmatic spaces. The three major spaces necessary for these researchers are: sleeping, work, and communal. With the elastic nature of canvas, it serves to provide closure and openness to the interior through the mobility of the furniture.

We are to initially identify a target user group for this housing project by studying the demographics of the assigned site. The apartment complex is to consist of 50-70 units and each unit is to be customized for the studied user group. The demographics of Crenshaw show a high population in single-parent families and small families. With that in mind, each single-parent unit includes two rooms on opposite ends of the living area to encourage interaction between the parent and child in the common space, but to also provide privacy when necessary in their own separate rooms. The main goal is to sell luxury to the more poverished community.

As part of the Design Against the Elements competition, the prompt is to design an entire disaster-resistant community next to an existing university. The project scope includes a community center, a community daycare or school, and at least 100 housing units.

PHILIPPINES DISASTER RELIEF HOUSING

The underlying goal is to create survivable units. In the case of a typhoon, these houses are raised 3 ft so that it can endure the floods that follow. Each unit interlocks with the adjacent one, forming one residential building. Because of limited space on the site, each living space is sized to accommodate for the basic needs, like sleeping, eating, etc.

The given site is about 40 acres and needs to provide 1 million square feet of office spaces for RAND as well as an additional chosen program--in this case, hotel and digital education center.
