“Pupils behave and attend well. They are friendly and polite. Similarly, students in the Sixth Form say they feel happy and settled in the school community, including many who have joined the school from other settings.”

WELCOME FROM
THE HEADTEACHER
Thank you for your interest in Boston High School Sixth Form. I am delighted that you are considering your future academic studies here.
We truly believe that joining our Sixth Form gives you the opportunity to excel inside and outside of the classroom. Universities and employers demand more than grades - and we believe that the ‘something extra’ such as skills in leadership, communication, and the ability to work with others effectively are all crucial components that we seek to develop here at Boston High School.
Our Sixth Form gives you the ability to demonstrate and develop your academic interests and other extra-curricular interests and abilities. We know this will give you greater freedom over future destinations when you finish your A Levels. Last year almost every student achieved their ambition. That wasn’t down to luck, but to ability, ambition, determination and support from caring and expert staff who could not be more devoted to helping you maximise your potential.
Our success and popularity are built upon our commitment to providing our students with the highest possible standards of teaching, learning and of care, guidance and support. If you are already learning with us, you will know this, but it is easy to take things for granted. If you are considering joining us from another school, you will be made equally welcome, and we will work with you to ensure we find the best courses to match your needs and aspirations.
I hope you enjoy learning more about our Sixth Form and that you find this prospectus both informative and helpful. I very much look forward to meeting you in the future and to welcoming you to our outstanding Sixth Form.
Mr A Fulbrook Headteacher

OUR SIXTH FORM EXPERIENCE AN OVERVIEW
Our Sixth Form is a popular post-16 option for students from the local area.
We have a wide range of A Level/CTEC subjects to choose from. Year 12 and Year 13 students have 9 hours over a fortnight of teaching time in each subject. Sixth Form students also have 9 hours over a fortnight of Supervised Study. During ‘private study’ lessons, students are expected to use this time to continue with their studies outside of lessons.
In Year 12 and 13, students are expected to attend Form Time in the mornings, with their Form Tutor. In the Sixth Form, we have a dedicated team of Form Tutors who will support them through their Sixth Form studies.
Enrichment takes place in Year 12. These lessons take place four times a fortnight; they are either self-directed by students or external visitors will deliver information to students as a year group. Self-directed options for Enrichment include work experience, LAMDA, MOOCs or Pre-Teach Course.
External visitors are invited to school to discuss and share information with students for a variety of reasons, including University preparation, Student Finance, contraception options or volunteering. Our Enrichment booklet is available on the website.

SIXTH FORM
OPPORTUNITIES
WORK EXPERIENCE:
This is an important part of the career’s education and guidance programme. All Year 12 students undertake work experience in the summer term. For certain career paths, students may be required to complete additional work experience such as Medicine, Veterinary, Teaching, Social Care, Dentistry and Nursing. This can be arranged during enrichment and private study times in Year 12.
The Sixth Form team and Careers Officer are available to give help and advice, before, during and after your work experience. Valuable experience is gained from completing a work placement and is an appropriate way to develop key skills and relevant experience for future applications. Work Experience clarifies and informs career plans and enriches many courses. Students will be required to set individual targets to be achieved on their work placement and their progress will be tracked and reviewed.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH:
There are Bronze, Silver and Gold Award opportunities for students to complete in their leisure time. For all sections the expedition is organised through school, whilst the other sections, Volunteering, Skills and Physical Recreation are completed in the candidate’s own time with guidance from school checking that the activity is on the approved list.
In addition, at Gold, the residential project is self-funded and completed in an individual’s leisure time. If you have already undertaken an award you may continue through the three levels, or you may select to start an award at any level - should you decide it is for you! An information evening is held to highlight the requirements and commitments needed within each award with no obligation to embark on an award at any level.
MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES (MOOCs):
There are a variety of additional courses students can complete during their time in the Sixth Form, and MOOCs are just one example of them. There is an extensive array of online courses, ranging in subject areas and duration. Many of the courses are free, however some do charge. We will contribute £30 towards any MOOC course a student wishes to study if it supports their future career pathway. Alternatively, students can receive financial support to purchase the Driving theory app to aid preparations towards Driving Theory examinations.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM:
During Year 12, students can apply to be a member of the Student Leadership Team, for various positions, including Head and Deputy Head Students, House and Wellbeing Prefects, Subject mentors and School Council Prefects.
One of the big projects the Student Leadership Team is responsible for is our Annual Sports day and Charity events, whereby the whole team works with the school community. Alongside the projects, there are day to day activities which need fulfilling, such as House competitions, Wellbeing groups, School Council Events and mentoring.
PRE-TEACH COURSE:
We have a tailored in-house 10 lesson programme, which introduces the core concepts of the Teaching profession. These sessions range from considering assessment for learning to creating resources for starter and plenary activities.
At the end of the programme, you will have:
• A portfolio of evidence to support applications, whether university, apprenticeship, or employment.
• A personal statement
• A completed work experience logbook, recording your progress at your placement.
LAMDA: SPEAKING IN PUBLIC
This valuable private qualification enables learners to develop the vital life skill of addressing an audience both fluently and with confidence. Lessons are interactive and great fun. After studying speechmaking techniques and writing your own you are invited to deliver three speeches to a visiting examiner.
Successful completion of the qualification also carries UCAS points.
SCHOOL COUNCIL: HAVE A VOICE! BE HEARD!
Joining School Council gives Sixth Form students a wonderful opportunity to work with students of all ages and play an active role in the strategic planning and processes of the school by representing the student body. School Council works with students, teachers, parents and outside organisations.
School Council has a governing committee and 4 sub-committees: The Big Project, Charities, Site and Eco and Fund Raising all of which have a Sixth Form leader. Key skills such as leadership, communication, planning and delivering projects can be developed.
