E D I TOR’S NOT E FRV Bali – IT TAKES YOU PLACES

It’s almost the beginning of the new Balinese year as we distribute this latest edition of FRV Bali. Nyepi falls on March 9 this year. It is a great time to be on Bali and to reset for the coming year, which is 1938 in Bali/Hindu years. FRV Bali will celebrate the New Year in style on Friday March 4 at La Sal restaurant on Jalan Drupadi, Seminyak and if our pre-Christmas show was any indictation, it should be a rollicking, festive night of fun and entertainment. DJs BTK and Local Hero will be supplying the tunes from 10pm. You are all invited. Many business people are saying that by the end of this year we’ll be seeing an upturn in the local economy, which has seen a quite dramatic

downturn over the past year, and especially over the past few months, as the many incentives put in place recently by the Indonesian government begin to have a positive effect on the economy. That, combined with the new summer tourist season fast approaching in Bali, we should see the situation improve quickly on the island. We are all believers in that—in economics we trust. In this edition of FRV Bali, our writers are all over the region once more discovering new places and new ways of travelling them. New writer, Michael Adams takes a wild trip on a 100cc motorcycle from the north to the south of Vietnam – a trip many of us would envy. Thomas Jones is back in NZ climbing glaciers

and mountains in the name of fun. While Vero is searching out the best parts of an Ubud trip – which I’m sure is a trip we all need to do more often. We also have some fantastic fashion shoots in this edition, with one being at The Dharmawangsa Jakarta with DIOR and another very impressive outing with our FRV fashion chief, Morin, here in Bali. There is plenty more fashion, food and accommodation inside. There is always something for everyone in FRV Bali and this time around is no different. We trust you will enjoy this edition of FRV Bali magazine. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we enjoy putting it together... Any comments, suggestions or gripes direct to this email: editor@frvbali.com

He always enjoys new experiences and the freedom of the getaway – sometimes far, sometimes close, but always fun. Good food, good wine, good people and times are the essence of an enjoyable life—you don’t need many or much, it’s the quality that counts.

ERZA S.T. Erza ST writes for many Indonesian publications and is a regular bon-vivant in his home town of Jakarta. He has been the head honcho of the Indonesian Opera Society for many years and can be caught at many of the classical concerts around the country. He loves winter in European countries as much as he loves good food and conversation in the best restaurants in Jakarta.

THOMAS JONES Travel writing is an admirable and important profession that takes a lot of dedication, hard work and a smidgen of luck to make it pay. Yet despite the hardships, Thomas sees it as a calling to take the opportunities that arise and share the lessons learned with the FRV community. This issue it’s off to New Zealand for a trip around the South Island and some glacier exploration to boot.

B I T S & PIE C E S GARDEN OF LIFE The Garden of Life is a Bali-based non-governmental organisation with the vision to preserve the beauty and magic of the island through the creation of a unique and huge eco-monument, consisting of over 400,000 hexagonal solar panels, each with a donor’s name etched within, which will serve as a major tourist attraction and raise awareness of Bali’s environmental and social issues, fund charitable projects, and stand as a sustainable legacy for future generations. This ‘Flower of Life’ is an architectural sculpture based on the principles of Sacred Geometry that unites people from all over the world under the banner of ecological and social responsibility. The Foundation’s Board is comprised of philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and leading Balinese figures in the fields of community-based tourism and socio-cultural ecology, and they are supported by a number of Ambassadors that have a common vision and care deeply about the Island of the Gods and its inhabitants. www.gardenof.life

ALL ABOARD FOR A TASTE OF INDONESIA SeaTrek Sailing Adventures is hosting a very special cruise this June, devoted to the flavours and spices of the archipelago entitled ‘A Taste of Indonesia’ to help celebrate the Ubud Food Festival. In the company of Bali luminary, Janet DeNeefe, and renowned Australian food photographer, Petrina Tinslay, they will share their skills both in the kitchen and behind the lens with demonstrations and presentations from their fascinating lives behind the lens and in the kitchen. This adventurous, 7-day inclusive voyage of discovery aboard the 24-passenger ‘Ombak Putih’ offers a cross-section of remote beaches, quiet coastal villages, jungle-clad mountain ranges, towering volcanoes, rivers, waterfalls, tribal rituals, a mysterious lake, and the legendary Komodo Dragons. As always, there will be ample opportunity to snorkel and view the kaleidoscopic beauty of the underwater world. www.seatrekbali.com

IT’S A MOVIDA! Movida is the name of a new Spanish restaurant, which is part of the new Katamama hotel, that stands behind Potato Head Beach Club on Petitenget Beach. It opened last month and we had the chance to experience it for the first time. The earthy, wooden tones of the space are in keeping with Spanish and the Potato Head design ethic, and the food, while having some modern twists from the Spanish/Australian curator, Frank Camorra, who now has six Movida restaurants under his belt, is very authentic Spanish fare. Try the selection of tapas, raciones and desserts on the menu to experience what Movida is all about; everything on the menu is delicious or at least the dishes we tried last week. Saludos and we say welcome to another great restaurant in the Bali dining scene.

TROPICAL YACHT CHARTERS Tropical Yacht Charters are filling a gap in the luxury local boat cruise world with their two luxury cruisers that are plying the waters around Bali and neighbouring islands. According to their manager, the evolution of the luxury yacht industry over the last few years has generated a need for quality and that’s the reason they decided to create Tropical Yacht Charters. They arrange trips aboard two private, crewed yachts in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The waters around Bali are vast and the different areas they cover on the boats is diverse. The major charter locations are individually crafted where each stop leads guests to something new. Every moment on board is about their enjoyment and they make sure that chartering a private luxury yacht becomes the ultimate dream holiday. The two cruisers are Forever and Jenna, both perfect luxury boats for a day charter. They provide a pickup service at 8am from a guest’s hotel or villa, departing

16

from Serangan Harbour at 9am. The day trip returns at 5.30pm and the return service will deliver guests to their hotel or villa. Food can be provided onboard upon request and will be charged additionally. For those who would like to have a nice break, we can organize a wonderful lunch as well at Sandy Bay Beach Club where they can dine while overlooking a beautiful beach. Tropical Yacht Charters provide a selection of seven different locations where guests can snorkel, swim and enjoy the beautiful white beaches. They include Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, Gili Air, Gili Gede, Desert Point, Kuta and Uluwatu. SHANGHAI BABY BALI MODERN CANTONESE RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE ARRIVES IN PETITENGET A brand-new style restaurant has landed on upcoming dining street, Jalan Petitenget in Bali, Indonesia. Shanghai Baby prides itself on its luxurious surroundings combined with outstanding service and exquisite new style contemporary Cantonese cuisine. It’s the latest creation from Nicholas and Valeria Minniti, whose past projects have included awardwinning private estates, beach clubs and luxury hospitality projects. They have scanned the globe, to put together a world class management and kitchen team including General Manager Din Hakim who have all relocated to Bali to set a new standard to ensure an unforgettable dining experience. The architecture & concept design is by Grant Cheyne in a design collaboration with Nicholas Minniti. Grant Cheyne was behind the renowned Salon D’Hotes in Paris, Rockpool Est.1989, Rockpool Bar and Grill, plus Spice Temple (Perth, Sydney and Melbourne). The interior detailing is by international interior stylist, Caroline Usher. For the first time, “cutting” edge style, and design are combined with a see-and-must-be-seen atmosphere that is set to revolutionize the Bali restaurant scene and elevate it to a whole new level. Cheyne has designed the space, giving it a grandiose air with playful undertones and an ‘anything goes’ attitude. He said upon the project: “I have attempted to bestow upon Shanghai Baby an elegant concoction of traditional grandness and vanguard design with a unique swanky spirit, while alluding to the nostalgia of 20th century Paris. There are opulent overtures yet it has a flirty vibe. Upon entering the restaurant which has been given a deliberate discreet exterior is like embarking on a hush-

18

hush affair across three flaunting levels engulfed in extravagance. It is the perfect environment to celebrate life with gloaming days and evocative nights replete with countless possibilities. Located on the ground floor is the main dining area, separated by grand terrazzo columns and oversized circular teak reveals, creating intimate private dining spaces while sharing the atmosphere of the timeless residence. The circular staircase leads up to the nocturnal second level where leather armchairs and the elaborate bar lounge club. An open air rooftop sits on the third level which features relaxed chairs and Parisianinspired water features. In the open kitchen situated at the heart of restaurant, Master Chef Ganesha commands an army of highly skilled chefs. With his team, Ganesh conceptualizes Shanghai Baby’s contemporary Cantonese dishes with a 21st century twist which are delivered to the highest standards. His signature modern flair is imprinted across every dish of which includes stir-fried black peppered rib-eye beef with merlot and potted silver cod with champagne and honey. Nicholas Minniti commented: “We have a very clear vision for Shanghai Baby. It is a state of being, a mentality that captivates and oozes an exquisite decadence that is usually only found in the most stylish of private homes. It is the place to be, the person you want to know and misbehave with, all at the same time. It was this ethos that has driven us to create this project, we have paid attention to every detail. At Shanghai Baby everything is designed to move you in a way like no other.” _____________________________ Shanghai Baby Jalan Petitenget 208x Seminyak, Bali www.shanghaibaby.asia

VILLA YANG – PHUKET Perched on a private cliff on Phuket’s most prized Millionaires’ Mile, Villa Yang’s ancient ‘yin & yang’ philosophy of Eastern thought is personified through the villa’s luxurious natural environment, architecture and interior design. The four-level villa offers the utmost in privacy with four elegant bedrooms, each with a private en-suite bathrooms and sea view decks. Socially, guests can lounge and entertain over the wondrous Andaman Sea in Villa Yang’s open-plan kitchen, dining and living area or outdoors from the 15-metre infinity pool deck. Conceived by respected Thai architect Charupan Wiriyawiwatt of Hong Kong-based Naga Concepts, the villa’s sensibility is a study in complementary opposites, mixing elements of classic, soft-lined Thai architecture and tropical gardens with the hard, crisp lines of contemporary furnishings. Following the guiding principal that opposing forces are interconnected and interdependent in our lives, Villa Yang is the quintessential vacation retreat to rejuvenate your body and soul. www.villayang.com
