The A STAR! in Western Maryland AmeriCorps program has served the four westernmost counties in Maryland since 1994, providing direct services focusing on Education and Healthy Futures. AmeriCorps members commit to one year of National Service impacting the communities served. A STAR!’s mission is to foster a network of local non profits, collaborate to provide identified direct service within the region to address education and health, – serving Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties. In one program year A STAR! in Western Maryland placed 160 AmeriCorps members in direct service opportunities in the four westernmost counties in Maryland.
AmeriCorps members mentor youth
• Over 11,525 books and emergency supplies were distributed to community partners as part of the Read to Succeed Program. • 9,325 pounds of paper was recycled.
• 2,221 K-12 students participated in programming supported by AmeriCorps members reporting an increase in science literacy.
• Clients receiving information and referral for health care programs = • 1,459 lunches were provided 1,369 during the summer lunch box program in Frostburg. • Clients receiving emergency food assistance = 8,367 • AmeriCorps members contributed 45,000 hours of direct service. • Number of food bags distributed = 41,351 • 139 K-12 students participated in healthy • New clients served = 2,793 living outreach supported by AmeriCorps members. • Number of clients receiving shelter services = 105
