Daymé Arocena

“ A great young trumpeter … his records filter calypso, reggae and other AfroCaribbean musics into a modern jazz conception.”

Help us celebrate spring in beautiful downtown Frostburg, Md.! Enjoy an optional brunch at The Gin Mill before joining us at the Lyric Theatre for a club-style performance with Cuban songbird Daymé Arocena. Arocena epitomizes the rich, diverse music of her homeland. Crediting Ella Fitzgerald as an influence, she blends classic soul with Cuban musical styles for a spellbinding, multilingual homage to her roots. Her debut release, Nueva Era, captured the attention of audiences and critics alike and was named by National Public Radio as one of the best albums of 2015.

Etienne Charles

Reminiscent of the martini bars and eateries of the 1940s, the Gin Mill offers classic cocktails and upscale pub fare with a slightly modern spin!

Creole Soul

Series e g a t s ff O WM With WF

Hailed by Jazz Times as “a daring improviser who delivers with heart-rending lyricism,” Etienne Charles cuts across musical boundaries in the most appealing of ways. “Jazz is creole music,” says Charles, “I come from a fusion of rhythms, a fusion of cultures.” With youthful, pulsating vitality, he taps into the Afro-Caribbean background of his Trinidadian upbringing and plumbs the musical depths of the islands, from calypso to Haitian voodoo music. Alongside a masterful band of jazz musicians on piano, alto saxophone, guitar, upright bass and percussion, Charles is certain to deliver a high-energy show.
