Christina Broderick eden energy method

The remote sessions played a part in preparing my body energetically for my hip replacement last year.

According to Albert Einstein "Everything is energy and that's all there is to it". These days, there are several modalities focused on the body and its energy. One of which is the Eden Energy Method (EEM). For EEM guidance, I think of Christina Broderick who has been practicing EEM for nine years. She is now Clinically Licensed considered a Practitioner of EEM that entailed three years of considerable training and ongoing professional development. She is also a certified healing Qi Gong Practitioner.

She combines both modalities to balance the energies of her clients. EEM is a holistic healing system that works with body's own energies. Donna Eden introduced this method in the late 1970's.

The inception started with Donna teaching Energy Medicine classes. Since then, Donna's work has touched millions of people across the globe, introducing them to the healing and restorative power of their body's own energies. I am grateful to have been introduced to EEM through Christina. I have attended her workshops

C h r i s t i n a explains, "The Five E l e m e n t s , according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, offers us a lens in which to view ourselves and the world around us. Many integrative modalities such as Acupuncture, Qigong, Feng Shui, and EEM use this Five Element Wheel to help balance our energetic systems to achieve good health and wellness." The Fire Element is one of the Five Elements and a perfect focus for this month as it is associated with the summer season. If the Fire Element is out of balance you may feel run out of steam or a feeling of being out of control and panic. When the fire element is in balance we feel a passion for life, inspiration, playfulness, and joy. If all this sounds familiar you probably read one of Christina's previous Front Porch articles on EEM. She suggests three EEM techniques for keeping the Fire Element in balance: Triple Warmer Smoothie, Holding Neurovascular Reflex Points and Taking Down the Flame. Taking Down the Flame exercise is her favorite.

The following passage discussing Taking Down the Flame is from a previous article of hers: “Taking Down the Flame

also helps to balance the Fire Element, calms emotions, helps to create a sense of well-being, and can help to lower blood pressure if it is done regularly. Take a deep breath in and out with your hands on your thighs. On the next inhale, raise your hands on either side of your body and connect them above your head so that your fingers and thumbs meet, and on an exhale bring them down to your head, touching your thumbs to the top of your head. Inhale and on an exhale, bring your thumbs to the middle of your

thumbs to your naval and flatten your hands. Inhale, and on the next exhale, bring them to their original position on your thighs. Finally, on the next exhale, move your hands down your legs, and off your toes. Then trace your hands up the inside of your legs, and finish with your hands over your heart. If you really want to add even more balance to this exercise, you can exhale each time with the "Haaaaaa" sound.”

These thirty-five words succinctly encapsulate a new government that was established in 1776 by a group of very brave and daring individuals. So to understand what the driving force was behind our resolute Founding Fathers willingness to defy the odds to establish a free nation, we need to understand how they were influenced by the Age of Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason. This intellectual European movement in the 17th and 18th Centuries incorporated the Ancient Greek philosophical beliefs in the "natural order" and "natural law" of the universe. Its goal was a belief in a rational humanity based on knowledge, freedom, happiness, and in man's ability to improve his own condition. These beliefs changed the worldview of the West, instigating revolutionary development in philosophy, art, politics, and science. This took immense bravery by these men who were willing to face down the British Empire, their king, and one of the largest Naval fleets that existed in the history of the world. To have the courage to "thumb their nose" at King George III was out and out treason and put them in jeopardy of the hangman's noose if they were found and captured.

Because of their overwhelming desire to live in a country that could selfgovern, these valiant and dedicated colonists risked the danger of military retaliation by a very well-trained and wellequipped British army, economic instability with the loss of British markets, and the loss of their livelihood and

property, even before a stable government had been established. In addition, not all of the colonists wanted to break away from the British Crown, so an internal conflict already existed. Historians estimate that 45% were Patriots, 15-20% were Loyalists, and 35-40% were neutral or undecided.

Benjamin Interestingly, Franklin's estranged son, the last Royal Governor of the New Jersey Colony, was against the separation from the British Empire.

Although we were taught that the Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, it should be noted that it was the Second Continental Congress who selected what has been named the Committee of Five to draft this document. This committee was composed of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston. After the Second Continental Congress discussed the general outline, it was decided that Jefferson would write the first draft. Due to the schedule of the Congress, Jefferson only had seventeen days to write this document. He then consulted with the other four members of the committee and extensive changes were made.

Jefferson was greatly influenced by the British philosopher and doctor John Locke, who was known as one of the most influential thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment and as the "Father of Liberalism." Jefferson actually altered Locke's words of "life, liberty, and estate (property) to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" because he felt that it was a better reflection of the fledgling country's ideals of individual rights and aspirations.

Jefferson never claimed that his thoughts were original. Even John Adams stated that the Declaration of Independence contained nothing really novel in its political philosophy. The Founding Fathers had studied both the successes and

failures of the Greek democracy and Roman republic, merging their ideas and principles with other additional philosophies. Jefferson stated later in his life that the Congress did not seek new and original principles but to base the document on common sense and human nature in an effort to create the best form of government for the people.

Technically, the Congress declared our sovereign status on July 2nd but was given a second reading before the adjournment and one additional reading on July 3 due to concerns over two passages, which were then deleted. On the morning of July 4th not all thirteen colonies or members of Congress signed the Declaration of Independence.

However, fifty-six of the delegates signed in spite of knowing that this decision could be signing their own death warrant. This group of men define the true nature of what makes a "hero", a word that is used too loosely in this day and time. They were willing to courageously offer up their lives so we could live in a free and selfdetermining nation. The sentiment of our Founding Fathers was that if we did not "hang" together, then we will certainly "hang" separately.

Graduate Degree First in Virginia UMW Launches Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence

The STEM-designated program integrates areas such as machine learning, generative AI and predictive analytics with core business disciplines including marketing, finance, operations and strategy.

University of Mary The Washington has opened enrollment for a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Business (MS in AI in Business), an innovative graduate program designed to prepare professionals for a rapidly evolving, AIdriven economy.

The graduate degree is the first of its kind in Virginia to focus specifically on artificial intelligence in a business context, combining advanced AI technologies with the strategic, ethical and leadership skills needed to translate those tools into real-world organizational impact.

"The MS in AI in Business is designed to equip students with the knowledge and applied skills to integrate AI technologies into organizational strategy, operations and innovation.

Coursework will emphasize practical applications of machine learning, data analytics and ethical AI, preparing graduates to lead in a wide range of industries, including finance, marketing, healthcare and consulting," said UMW Provost Tim O'Donnell.

"Artificial intelligence is transforming how

organizations operate, compete and serve their communities. This degree will prepare graduates to lead in this field."

Designed for both working professionals and recent graduates, the program is offered 100% online in an asynchronous format, allowing students across Virginia and beyond to balance graduate study with professional and personal commitments.

Located in one of the nation's fastest-growing technology corridors, between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, UMW is uniquely positioned to meet regional workforce demand for AI-fluent business leaders.

The region's concentration of federal agencies, contractors and technology firms continues to drive demand for professionals who can translate artificial intelligence into strategic advantage.

The MS in AI in Business was approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) in May, with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) approval in June.

The program requires 30 credit hours and can be completed in as little as one year full-time or two years part-time.

Graduate students can start their studies for the MS in AI in Business online in fall 2026.

Everything Greens the forest is haunted By janet douberly The second half of the walk takes place largely in the dark, which is one of the most magical times to experience the woods.

Without bright sunlight demanding your attention, your other senses get a chance to shine. The smell of the forest grows richer. The sounds become louder. The moon starts peeking through the canopy overhead.

There are two kinds of people in this world. The first kind hears a strange noise in the woods and immediately decides it is probably a bird, a squirrel, or perhaps the wind.

The second kind hears a strange noise in the woods and thinks, "Excellent.

The forest is haunted."

Fortunately, both types of people are welcome on our monthly Nature Walks at the Belman Road Campus!

One of the greatest joys of spending time in nature is realizing that the natural world is far stranger, more beautiful, and more magical than anything we could make up. Giant moths masquerade as dead leaves. Mushrooms erupt overnight from seemingly nowhere.

Lightning bugs blink secret messages into the darkness. Salamanders spend their lives hiding beneath logs like tiny woodland dragons. Entire armies of ants march through the forest carrying seeds, leaves, and occasionally the remains of their enemies.

Nature is weird which is why so many of us feel at home there. Some of us even see nature as our church. A place to

feel gratitude and connection something bigger than ourselves.

That is exactly why Downtown Greens hosts free monthly Nature Walks on our beautiful 56-acre Belman Road Campus. Every month we invite the community to come wander the woods and fields with us while we marvel at whatever strange and wonderful things happen to be going on at that particular moment.

In July, we trade sunlight for mystery. Our next Twilight Nature Walk will be Friday, July 24th at 8:00 PM and will be led by yours truly. We will begin while there is still enough daylight to admire plants, mushrooms, insects, and whatever else catches our attention. As the sun slips away, the woods begin to change. Day shift clocks out and the night shift clocks in.

This is when things get interesting. Bats may swoop overhead hunting insects. Owls may call from the darkness. The forest becomes a place of silhouettes and sounds. Every snapped twig suddenly feels dramatic. Every rustle in the leaves inspires questions. Was it a deer? A rabbit? A raccoon? A cryptid? The possibilities are endless.

If nighttime adventures are not your thing, fear not. Our next Morning Nature Walk will be Saturday, August 22nd at 10:00 AM and will be led by our Land Manager, Em Ford. Morning walks are excellent opportunities to observe birds, tadpoles, insects, native plants, mushrooms, and all the other daylightloving creatures going about their business. Em has an incredible eye for spotting things the rest of us would happily walk right past.

Whether you prefer sunshine or starlight, there is always something fascinating waiting to be discovered at the Belman Road Campus.

Vegetables and fruits of many kinds are grown without insecticides.

Diatomaceous earth has been effective on some of the insects, and hand picking has also been the tactic of choice. Kudos are well deserved!

Lynette Morrissette conducts “Therapeutic Horticulture” photo by Mike Morrissette Therapeutic Horticulture Residents at Heritage Hall in King George will be enjoying the chance to use seasonal plants in flower arrangements, seed sprouting, and craft creation under the guidance of Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Lynette Morrissette.

Lynette grows all kinds of flowers, and loves to hear the stories that older gardeners have to tell. Participants will learn about the flowers, and will likely be garden hobbyists themselves so lively conversations will be encouraged.

"Therapeutic Horticulture" is a program conducted in a group setting utilizing plants and plant-related activities.

Participants are encouraged to improve their sense of well-being by enjoying the sight, sound, smell, and feel of flowers, soil, and craft creation. This focus is similar to, but applied differently from "Horticulture Therapy," which is designed for an individual and directed by a licensed Horticulture Therapist. Gardeners of all ages can relate; the benefits of getting our hands into real soil is well known and needs to be encouraged.

Growing & Crawling Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Acorns By janet douberly July is here, which means it is time once again for fireworks, cookouts, and hot dogs and the traditional spirited debates about the best type of oak tree.

Virginia is home to so many species of oak it'll make your head spin to try and count them. These towering trees are not only beautiful, long-lived, and excellent providers of shade, they are also some of the most important wildlife plants in North America. If native ecosystems had celebrity rankings, oak trees would be embarrassingly famous.

Researchers estimate that oak trees support over 500 species of caterpillars! That is enough hungry little leaf-munchers to make a gardener break out in hives.

Fortunately, those caterpillars are also bird food. Countless native birds depend on those juicy, wiggly snacks to raise their young.

And it isn't just caterpillars. Oak trees support beetles, moths, gall wasps, leafhoppers, and many other wee beasties.

In fact, some of those gall wasps create the

oak galls once used to make iron gall ink.

The Declaration of Independence was drafted and signed using ink made from oak galls. That's right. One of the most famous documents in American history owes a debt to a tiny wasp nursery.

Freedom is apparently written in bug spit and tree lumps.

So this July, while celebrating another trip around the sun for our

nation, spare a thought for the oak tree.

Quietly, steadily, and without demanding a parade, it has been supporting generations of American wildlife for far longer than any of us have been around.

Fredericksburg Perspectives

1115 caroline St First Christian Church of Fredericksburg (1890’s) Eileen’s Bakery & Cafe (Today) The church where Eileen's Bakery and Café currently resides was built in Fredericksburg VA 1833. It was occupied by the "Reformed Baptist" The parishioners disbanded around 1861 when the Civil War began.

The building became derelict for 35 years, but its life was not over.

It had been used as a hospital during the war, later as a warehouse for grain, and a schoolhouse. Also in that time it became the home of a black woman named "Happy Jenny". She had lived in one of the Church balconies She was said to have held revivals that both black & white patrons could attend.

In the 1890's the First Christian Church was revived The balconies were removed, new floor, ceiling and windows. The alter was moved from one side of the building to the other, the front entrance followed and a baptizing tank was installed behind the alter. In the next decades to come wooden classrooms were added to the rear of the building to expand Sunday School.

In 1962 The church was sold to the Knights of Pythias Fraternal lodge. They changed it into a bingo hall, installed a small kitchen, snack shop, men's T.V Bar and lastly added large exhaust fans to remove all the cigarette smoke . The Pythians sold the building to the Unitarian Univeralist Fellowship in 1984.

The Pythians left behind a round stained glass window that the First Christian Church had also left behind. The window contains a symbolic anchor in its center, which was said to be a memorial to the Civil War dead. It was given by a church founder sometime around 1900. The stained glass was moved to the front wall of the building where it's displayed for everyone to see in the foyer In 1980 the red brick exterior was painted a cream yellow with white trim.

Historic Fredericksburg Foundation marked this beautiful building with a brass plaque placed by the front door.

In May 2009, the Fellowship sold the building to the new site for Eileen's Bakery and Café. Renovations were made, changing the main church area into the dining room for everyone to enjoy and the Sunday school classrooms into the kitchen and bakery production areas. Guests are treated to high ceilings, original church walls that are 12 inches thick and simply the legacy of an old colonial church that has survived the test of time FREDERICKSBURG PERSPECTIVES is created to provide our community (greater Fredericksburg, Va.) with an avenue for public engagement in an exploration of our common social history.

The Fourth of July is our country's summer sparkler and fireworks holiday, celebrated by most everyone in America - this year is our 250th Independence Day. Colorful painted trailers full of pop-rockets, smoking tanks and snapping firecrackers appear in local parking lots, expensive cellophanewrapped packages looking tremendously appealing to the grandchildren-crowd. And the parades! All over the country, community parades of miniature tophatted versions of Abraham Lincoln and Lady Liberty with torch in hand march next to red, white and blue crepe-paper festooned bicycles, strollers and wagons televised versions of America's larger parades feature floats honoring our service members, marching bands play patriotic tunes and of course the day would not be complete without a dazzling nighttime fireworks display. Traditional

p i c n i c s , cookouts and c o o k - o f f s sprout in back yards, parks a n d communities all over the country - and for many workers, the Fourth of July is an extended three-day weekend. Every year our family combines the Fourth with the Third of July, my husband's birthday - the annual theme a n d decorations are so easy! Several dozen American flags planted outside around the house, balloons and a trip to the fireworks trailer complete the arrangements. A simple hotdog and hamburger menu rounds out our backyard food festival - that and the homemade ice cream alongside the birthday cake! probably the best and easiest dessert to make are bar cookies.

MUD HENS This is a really old family recipe with an unusual name. I still don't know how this name came about, but they are easy and delicious. Let them sit out overnight to crisp up the top, or the meringue will become soggy. Preheat oven to 350F. Butter a 9"x13" baking pan. Beat

together one-half cup softened butter with one cup sugar, then add one egg and two egg yolks (save the whites for the topping), one teaspoon vanilla and two tablespoons half and half. Whisk together one and one-half cup flour with a dash of salt and one teaspoon baking powder along with one and one-half cup chopped pecans and stir into mixture. Spread into baking pan and bake ten minutes. While crust is baking, whisk the remaining two egg whites until foamy, add a pinch of cream of tartar and beat until stiff. Whisk one cup tightly packed light brown sugar until there are no lumps, and gradually fold into the beaten egg whites. Spread over cookie layer and bake an additional twenty to twenty-five minutes or until golden brown. The top will crumble a bit as it cools - wait until the cookies are cool to the touch to cut and serve.

SEVEN LAYER BARS I have a grandson who is severely allergic to tree nuts, so I leave them out and call them six-layer bars for him. Use either regular sweetened condensed milk (NOT evaporated) or the newer chocolate flavor. Either way, cut them into tiny squares to serve as they are SO sweet. Wait for these to cool before cutting as well.

Preheat oven to 325F. Melt one-half cup butter in a 9"x9" square baking pan (easy to do in microwave if using a glass or microwave-safe pan). Layer in the following order - one cup of graham cracker crumbs (or if you are a complete chocoholic, use crushed oreo cookies instead, along with one can of the chocolate condensed milk) - one cup shredded coconut - one-half cup butterscotch chips - one-half cup semisweet chocolate chips - one cup chopped pecans. Open the can of

condensed milk and pour evenly over the top of the bars, do not try to spread it or you will end up with a very messy bar cookie. Bake for thirty-five minutes, or until golden brown all around the edges and shiny on top. Let cool before cutting.

KEY LIME BARS These are really cool and refreshing - and quite different than lemon bars, although they are based on the same recipe. Preheat oven to 350F. Cut in one cup butter into two cups flour and three-quarter cups confectioner's sugar until the mixture resembles cornmeal and clings together. Spread evenly into bottom of 9"x13" pan and bake for twenty minutes or until lightly browned. While the cookie base is baking, combine four eggs, two cups sugar, onethird cup Key Lime juice (you can find this bottled in most grocery stores, or you can juice regular limes), one tablespoon finely shredded lime zest, one-half cup flour mixed with one-half teaspoon baking powder. Pour over crust and return to oven for an additional fifteen minutes or so until the filling is set. Sprinkle with one cup shredded coconut and return to oven until coconut is lightly browned. Again, wait until the bars are cool before cutting.

(If you like the idea of a greener filling, just add a drop or two of green food coloring to the filling mixture before baking).

Sangria is a Spanish wine cocktail, which generally consists of wine, brandy, fruit juice, and sliced fruit. In recent years, both the white and red varieties have become popular. Sangria is great for summer parties. It can easily be made in large quantities, is refreshing on a hot day, and goes great with Prosciutto, burgers, and hot dogs. We have assembled several recipe options for your Summer weekend party. Add red, white, and blue fruit for a festive flair!

Red Sangria Punch This has been a favorite sangria recipe for a while and is great for parties.

I will generally use a red zinfandel or merlot. Try Rubus Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel or Secret Cathare Merlot.

1 750ml bottle red wine 1 each lemon, lime and orange cut into wedges 2tbs sugar Splash of orange juice 2 shots of gin or triple sec 1 cup frozen strawberry slices 1 small can diced pineapple with juice 4 cups ginger ale Squeeze the juice from the lemon, lime and orange wedges and then add fruit wedges to the juice. Add the remaining ingredients, except ginger ale.

Ideally, chill for several hours or overnight. Add ginger ale (ideally this has been pre-chilled as well) prior to serving.

The De La Costa Red Sangria is bottled off-dry style of sangria bursting with bright orange, lemon, cherry, cinnamon and ginger flavors. Chill and serve on its own, or make it semihomemade with the following suggestions.

Add ginger ale for a bit more spice and bubbles without adding alcohol.

Add Babbo Extra Dry Prosecco to give it a touch of sweetness and lighter fruit flavors.

Add Hillinger Secco Pinot Noir Rose for bubbles and Jazz apple, pear, and melon notes.

Add brandy for a traditional alcohol kick.

Add Fireball Whiskey for a nontraditional kick.

Serve in a punch bowl or pitcher with any of the above plus cut up fruit to complete the presentation

Frozen Another variation is frozen sangria made with Lieutenant Blender's Wine Freezers. Mix according to package directions and toss in the freezer overnight. About an hour before the party, take the bag out of the freezer and lay it on the counter. Your patience will be rewarded with a sangria slushy!

America 250

By Ralph “Tuffy” Hicks anniversary of the Declaration July 4, 1826, as did James Monroe years later, July 4, 1831. Another interest fact is that John Adams son, John Quincy Adams was President in 1826.

July 4, 2026, we will mark an extraordinary milestone as this is the Semi quincentennial or the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of independence on July 4, 1776. As most of us can remember Walter Cronkite's famous expression, "YOU ARE THERE." We are privileged to live at this moment in time, however, we also live in an area that is close to Washington, Boston and Philadelphia where many of the 1776 events took place. Not to mention the British surrender at Yorktown Virginia.

Not only those events, here in Fredericksburg where George Washington's mother lived and is buried.

Washington grew up across the river in Stafford at Ferry Farm. James Monroe, Hugh Mercer among others were regular residents of the town.

Many States will celebrate with replicas of the Liberty Bell and patriots signing the Declaration in conjunction with the America 250, the official commission that was approved by Congress to organize the programs and the Washington D. C., grand parade and fireworks.

Our country was very much different in 1776, Hawaii was its own kingdom and Alaska belonged to Russia.

The celebration that will begin on July 4th will last all year until 2027. Many of us still remember the Bicentennial celebration in 1976, where the Disney characters were wearing tri-corner hats and the tall ships and Freedom Train.

That event was just 50 years ago when we were younger.

Official planning for the 2026 event started in 2016. Some of the events planned are a Times Square Ball drop, Grand Prix race that will be around the National Mall. The FIFA World Soccer Cup with matches in different cities.

I always like to mention that Thomas Jefferson, a Virginian, wrote the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson along with John Adams died on the 50th

Stafford, Spotsylvania and the city of Fredericksburg will have fireworks and unique events for the two-hundred-andfifty-year anniversary of the Declaration of 1776, we are privileged to be able to celebrate this special event in our lifetime. The event will be a yearlong celebration that will begin on July 4, 2026.

I remember the bicentennial in 1976, with everyone excited and watching the tall ships in New York Harbor with everyone flying the flag at their homes throughout the area.

At the 50th anniversary in 1826, President John Quincy Adams gave a speech praising the event and how the nation was enjoying being free. President Adams was unaware during the first fifty years event that Thomas Jefferson age 83 and his father John Adams age 90, both signers of the Declaration of Independence had died. John Adams had served two terms as Vice-President under George Washington. In 1876 President U. S. Grant celebrated the Centennial with the Exposition in Philadelphia that drew around ten million people.

In 1926 America celebrated the 150th anniversary, President Calvin Cooledge gave a speech in Philadelphia on July 5, 1926. His speech stressed the points of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and the importance of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1976 at the two hundredth anniversary, President Gerald R. Ford made a speech that praised what we have become in America as a land of the free. He also proclaimed that on July 4, 1976, at two in the afternoon church bells would ring in celebration of the twohundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. President Donald Trump is scheduled to also address the nation on July 4, 2026.

OUR HERITAGE College Heights School served a dual purpose By susan scott neal The Campus Training School providing both elementary and high school education was most likely the brainchild of Algernon B. Chandler, president from 1919 to 1928 of Fredericksburg State Teachers College, now known as the University of Mary Washington.

Chandler was a native of Bowling Green, Va., with undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Virginia and a law degree from Washington and Lee University

This photograph was taken before the buiding's two-sstory front portico facing Ball Circle was added during a 1938 renovation. lA century ago, a unique teacher training program undertaken by Fredericksburg State Teacher's College offered an authentic school experience and high school diplomas - to a number of lucky white children from Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

The 11-year effort, known as College Heights School or Campus Training School, filled a need at a time when small schoolhouses still dotted the rural landscape, and many children of all ages studied under the innovative possibly beleaguered -tutelage of a single young female teacher.

Separate high schools for teenagers were few and far between throughout Virginia, and the Fredericksburg area was no exception.

When public school systems began building separate high schools for white children, some students lived too far away to attend.

In Spotsylvania County, for example, older white students had two choices - Chancellor High School, built in 1912 on Plank Road about a mile from Five-Mile Fork, and R.E. Lee High School, opening in 1914 on the opposite end of the county near the courthouse.

In Stafford County, the first public high school was Stafford High, built in 1926 near the courthouse, about 10 miles from Fredericksburg.

Some students lived closer to Fredericksburg than they did to any of the high schools in their counties. They did have the option of paying tuition to attend high school in the city, first at Lafayette School, which opened in 1908, then at Fredericksburg High School, also known as Maury School, built in 1920. But the cost was often an impediment.

The college's primary mission was uppermost in Chandler's mind. As its name sets forth, the institution on the hill above Fredericksburg was charged with educating female teachers to enter the workforce.

In order to complete their course requirements, young women had to walk to the nearest public school for on-the-job experience. But that meant walking a mile to the public school on Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg.

Chandler believed a school located on campus would better serve their needs, as well as fill a void for local students.

With approval from the city and county school systems, Chandler's proposal to establish a campus location gained momentum in January 1926 with the appropriation of $60,000 by the General Assembly for the purposes of building a training school. The school opened in 1927 in temporary quarters, including Monroe Hall

college's longstanding relationship with its preferred architectural firm, Charles M. Robinson of Richmond. Bids went out in February 1928 for construction of the building, with a stipulation that it be ready for use by the start of the fall session on Sept. 15.

Well-known Fredericksburg builder E.G. "Peck" Heflin won the bid and started construction on March 5. Heflin didn't quite make the deadline, but the training school opened in its new building on Oct. 8, 1928.

That December, the college's Board of Visitors named the building Chandler Hall in honor of the president, who would lead the college until his death from a stroke in 1938.

Between the fall of 1927 and June 1938, some 400 children a year attended the school, which was modeled on contemporary educational methods and curricula. The school provided an authentic experience for the children, albeit on a college campus.

Mental Health Serenity pRAYER to the RESCUE By karen kallay This may mean I'll do something about local schools, to support them somehow, or to volunteer.

Maybe it means publicity for this fall's elections.

Maybe it's to improve my family's nutrition. Hey, maybe to get informed about proposed data centers in my county.

This all helps me to remember that generally I'm only responsible for my own actions and thoughts, not those of others. While I consider our president's decision to engage in a commercial barbaric "ultimate fight" event to celebrate his birthday on the White House lawn a destructive image, it does not shut me down!

I find myself feeling dirtied and fearful of social and national decadence and disorder. It gets harder to fall and stay asleep at night. I start eating lots of "comfort foods." I neglect positive possibilities and pleasures.

Whoa! Serenity Saying to the Rescue.

Among more spiritual people it is known as the Serenity Prayer. It was written by an American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the early 1930s in a sermon, then

appeared in print in a YWCA periodical a few years later.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

And how does that apply here? It means that I refocus my attention and energies on myself, my connections, and what I can do.

This isn't being selfcentered. Instead, it recognizes that it helps me to be healthier, happier, and stronger. That means I can survey the opportunities for action about my concerns in a more realistic, curious, and imaginative way. I can do more careful research about major issues.

I can identify the organizations that have done a lot of footwork regarding the things I care about most, and I can work with them.

Emancipated Patients statins or no statins

By Patrick Neustatter, MD Excursion Into Statistics Results of trials of treatments can be expressed as relative risk reduction (RRR), or as n u m b e r needed to treat (NNT).

It happened again. A friend bent my ear for advice. "My cholesterol's too high and my doctor wants me to take statins. Do I really need to?"

A lot of people are wrestling with this issue.

Whether you need to is dependent on risk factors - like age, blood pressure, if you're diabetic, cholesterol level, if you've had vascular/heart problems, family history.

But also important is how beneficial statins will be - which to an extent it's a judgement call, and dependent on how the benefits are presented.

This may all sound a little whimsical, but there are different ways of expressing the results of trials of statins or any other treatment - that give a very different feel.

"Almost all reports in the p o p u l a r media, and many in the medical literature, present risk results as relative risk reductions" notes an article in the American Academy of Family Practice journal. This because "relative risk reductions often make data seem more impressive."

You might not be surprised to learn the pharmaceutical industry likes to use RRR. The easiest way to put this across is to use an example. I always use the way Pfizer promoted their cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor (atorvastatin) when it first hit the market. The trial involved hundreds of patients. One group took Lipitor, the other placebo. The trial ran for 40 months.

In this time, out of every 100 people in the group taking placebo, 3 had a heart attack. In the group taking Lipitor, 2 did.

The RRR - the proportional decrease in the risk of an adverse event was the difference between 3 versus 2, which is a 36 percent reduction. Sounds good. Put it in the water supply.

But when you look at the NNT the average number of patients who need to receive a specific treatment to prevent one additional bad outcome - you see only one person in that hundred was spared a heart attack by taking the Lipitor.

An NNT of 1 in 100. The other 99 gained no benefit - and were at risk of adverse drug reactions. This doesn't sound quite so rosy.

Atorvastatin is the most popular statin despite it's NNT of 1 in 100. The second most is simvastatin. This has an NNT if 217 or higher for primary prevention (the NNT varies depending on the population you are testing - it all gets very technical).

Everywhere I looked it told me this would lower my risk. But nowhere could I find out by how much. This is the case for so many treatments and interventions. Yes, it will help, but by how much? Which is a pretty crucial question when making a decision.

If you really want to drive your doctor buggy, next time he or she says "take this blood pressure medicine" or "take this cholesterol medicine" ask them how much difference it is going to make.

Probability not Possibility These statistics are an expression of probability. But it irritates me that so many decisions on treatment don't take account of probability. Only possibility.

For example, my doctor wants me to take blood pressure medicines to get my pressure down to what the new guidelines (well, new in 2017) recommend - a BP of 120/80mm/Hg. This instead of 140/90 mm/Hg which was the previous acceptable limit.

To decide if I really needed to take his nasty medicines, I wanted to know how much difference this would make to my risk of complications - like stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

Vacation Without the Setbacks How to Stay Healthy During Summer Travel

By cher murphy Summer is a popular time for travel, with children out of school and warm weather inviting families to hit the road. In the months leading up to a vacation, many people work hard to build healthy habits and pursue wellness goals, only to see those routines disappear during their trip. Too often, they return home feeling discouraged, as though they have to start over. Fortunately, with a little planning and consistency, those setbacks can be avoided.

"A vacation shouldn't be a time away from your health, because your health matters all the time," said Jennifer Scherer, registered dietitian nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, certified personal trainer, master-level Pilates instructor, and owner of Fredericksburg Fitness Studio. "What you do during your summer trip can have a significant impact on how you feel both during the vacation and when you return home."

When people abandon all of their health and wellness routines on vacation, they often gain weight and begin adopting habits that leave them feeling worse. They may stop exercising, eat poorly, neglect sleep, and overindulge in ways that take a toll on both physical and mental wellbeing. Some people find it difficult to return to their healthy routines once they get back home.

Vacation exhaustion is another common issue. Many people come home feeling like they need a vacation from their vacation. Lack of sleep, busy schedules, excessive indulgence, and poor food choices can leave travelers depleted and struggling to regain their energy.

Walk more. Whenever possible, explore destinations on foot.

Snack wisely. Pack convenient, proteinrich snacks for road trips, airports, and long travel days. Nuts, jerky, trail mix, and string cheese are all easy options.

Don't skip meals. Skipping meals often leads to overeating later. Even if meals are smaller than usual, maintaining regular eating patterns helps people stay on track.

Keep workouts simple. Vacation is a great time to simplify exercise.

Bodyweight movements, resistance bands, walking, and stretching can help maintain fitness without requiring a gym.

Prioritize recovery. Quality sleep and recovery help support energy levels, stress management, and immune health.

Forget perfection. Rather than striving for perfection, focus on consistency.

Mindful choices and healthy habits can still be maintained while enjoying vacation.

"Avoid throwing all structure out the window while you're away," added Scherer. "Trust me, you'll be happier and feel better if you keep a few simple health habits in mind. You'll feel better both during your vacation and after you return home. Maintaining some structure helps people stay balanced, energized, and more mindful of their choices."

Embroidery Artist April Koenig Stitching fabric & found objects into works of art By ellyn wenzler wood and rust and April learned to appreciate the small details and to love the weathering process by watching her. "I just love the colors of weathered wood and rusting metal…the textures and how they change with time and exposure." Her fascination with texture, pattern, and the remnants of passing time, continue to influence her embroidery work.

April Koenig is an embroidery artist living in Spotsylvania County. As a military spouse, she spent 25 years moving across four countries while raising her two children. During those years, she had the extraordinary opportunity to study at The Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace in England, where she completed their Certificate Course with merit. The experience renewed her love of embroidery and introduced her to new techniques. She found herself captivated by blackwork, a technique which uses intricate patterns to create an embroidered picture. It uses various densities of black thread and a variety of geometric stitches to create tonal shading and realism. "To me it was like drawing with pen which I had always enjoyed."

April's needlework journey began at age 10 when her grandmother taught her to embroider. While embroidery became her artistic medium of choice, the roots of her creativity began with her watercolor artist mother. Growing up, she spent Sundays exploring the Colorado plains with her mom searching for old homesteads to photograph and paint. Her mother found beauty in the weathered

Over time, her work has evolved dramatically. She began by designing cross-sstitch patterns and stitching quotations, moved on to blackwork, and dimensional later, a class on three-d stitching (upper right) at an Embroiderers' Guild national conference caused her to move in yet another creative direction. She has developed a distinctive style that combines dimensional stitching with weathered found objects. "The three dimensional pieces are little portraits of time's effect on the world around us.

They encourage people to stop and notice the details," April explains. Her work often balances meticulous planning with spontaneous exploration. In her

highly structured blackwork pieces (below) every pattern, thread thickness, and stitched texture is carefully chosen to create value, depth, and detail. The painstakingly gradual transformation from empty fabric to fully realized image continues to spark her enthusiasm for each project. Alternatively, her 3D works "get planned only as far as what centerpiece and fabric to use," she explains. "The rest is joyous freehand and slow stitching."

One particular art piece remains especially meaningful to April. In high school, she created a graphite drawing of a still life used by her mother's art students - a white porcelain pitcher, plate, and bowl filled with eggs. Years later she chose to recreate the drawing in blackwork for a project during her time at the Royal School of Needlework. The resulting embroidery "was given the highest score of any of my modules and was displayed in a show in the Queen's residence at Windsor Castle."

Following a period away from her creative practice while caring for her aging mother, she returned to embroidery and began exploring the arts community in Fredericksburg.

There, she found friendship among like-minded artists and formed The Underbridge Society, a collective of makers celebrating the magical and fantastical. Together, they can be found sharing their creations at the Virginia Renaissance Faire, as well as conventions and markets that embrace the weird and wonderful.

April's artwork is on display at Canal Quarter Arts where she volunteers as a docent on Wednesdays. As the featured resident artist in July, an expanded display of her stitched art will be displayed through the month.

Auto Known Better 250th article

Where to begin?

They say with age comes wisdom.

They left out the aches and pains and constant shuffling of the calendar to accommodate doctors' appointments and family needs and wondering when you'll get an entire week off. What I'm learning, albeit somewhat slowly, is you can carve out time for yourself.

It's called "Independence" and "Free Will."

Case in point; it took fifty years from the time I first heard about "the cabin" my friends' family had up in the Blue Ridge before actually making the hike and enjoying a picnic on the porch. What foolishness. I lived in the valley for a decade and have been there every year since and never made that hike.

This isn't a kit-cabin home with a vaulted ceiling and a hot tub. This is a cabin on a mountainside built by hand not long after our country was founded. It is a rare three-story log and stone cabin with a commanding view of the Shenandoah and about as isolated as you can get even in this modern era.

When they cleared the land and

built the first level of stone backed into the hillside, isolated doesn't convey the reality. What was the deal? Was all the nice flat farmland in the valley already taken or had clearing and farming a rocky mountainside with a 60-degree slant always been their dream? Eventually that first floor of stone supported two more stories of hand-hewn logs that housed a family with ten children. Pretty sure they did home schooling without a voucher.

Adam Mueller settled near Lithea Spring in 1741 establishing the first settlement west of the Blue Ridge. It later became known as Conrads Store and now Elkton, Va. This family lived half a day's walk from that store. Two hundred years later I shared a picnic with friends on their porch. That's a celebration of our nation and humbling.

We live in a land of many blessings and opportunities.

Are they distributed equally among all Americans?

No. But as we strive to find a focus in celebrating the fact that this democracy has managed to defy all odds and survive for 250 years, we need only to look at the family with ten children who fostered the next generation and the next and the next.

They were immigrants. They came to a strange and harsh land and tilled rocky soil in search of a better life. Nothing has changed.

The streets of our cities are rocky ground, and immigrants still struggle to make life better for their children. And they succeed for that generation and the next and the next.

Things have changed, but not really. Henry Ford's Model T was a good and dependable improvement to transportation and drastically changed America. Route 66 is celebrating 100 years of coast-to-coast travel and there's a Model T doing the drive. And Henry Ford's father was an immigrant from County Cork in Ireland who's son went on to...

So here we are at our nation's 250th Celebration of Independence! As an older car guy, I'm stuck with the images from American Motors in the late 60's and 70's. They managed to get the Red-White & Blue paint scheme on all their cars from Rebels to Javelins.

No one pushed it harder. Did it help? No, they eventually went under.

It's not about the colors. It's not about the spectacle. A gladiator fight on the White House lawn doesn't honor the patriots who made this possible.

A quiet afternoon on a porch where 200 hundred years ago regular people put forth the effort and sacrifice to build this country is a celebration for us all.

Swim Safe Tips for healthy & safe Swimming By jaleEsA tURNER

Rappahannock Health The Department offers guidance to prevent illness, injuries and drowning, and to ensure a safe summer of swimming at the pool, in open waters or at the beach.

"While water can bring fun and connection, it also comes with risks," said Rappahannock Area Health Director Olugbenga Obasanjo, M.D. "Even the most joyful moments near water can take an unexpected turn. We encourage families to take simple steps - like supervising children closely and using life jackets near open water - to help make every water activity a safe one."

According to the CDC, drowning is a leading cause of death in children. In Virginia, nearly 500 people have accidentally drowned between 2020 and 2024. Of those who drowned, 90 were ages 19 and younger. Knowing how to swim is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of drowning. If drowning has occurred and the victim is not breathing, bystanderinitiated CPR is the most effective way to promote a positive outcome.

Swimming in lakes, rivers, and other natural waters can be fun, but it's important to stay safe and healthy. These

waters can sometimes carry germs that cause swimming-related illnesses, diarrhea, skin rashes, pneumonia or flulike illness and irritation of the eyes or respiratory tract. To protect yourself and your family, avoid swimming after heavy rain, don't swallow the water, shower after swimming, and stay out of the water if you're sick. Adults should actively supervise children and wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets near open water. "Floaties," arm bands or water wings are not safety devices. Taking a few simple steps can help keep your time in the water safe and enjoyable: Don't swallow the water when swimming. A mouthful of water with germs can make you sick for 2-3 weeks.

Wash with soap and water before and after swimming. Wash your hands for 20 seconds before eating or preparing food.

Cover any open wounds or cuts. Don't swim if your skin has cuts or open wounds.

Don't swim or play in water if you or

your child has been sick with diarrhea in the past two weeks. Diarrhea and swimming don't mix!

Use swim diapers on infants and toddlers. Check swim diapers regularly.

Take kids on hourly bathroom breaks.

Thoroughly dry ears after swimming to avoid swimmer's ear.

Avoid going in water if there is a green film on the water or if the water is cloudier than usual. Some harmful algal blooms can be dangerous.

Companions volunteers travel 2,000 miles to save desperate dogs by lenora Kruk-Mullanaphy and how many more miles they had to go before getting back to ODHS." Volunteers Christina Twombly, of King George, and Theresa Murray, of Spotsylvania, didn't hesitate to make the trip even though it was during a holiday weekend and they'd miss time spent with their families.

After flying across the country, they picked up the pups, which included about 30 Chihuahuas, a few pregnant dogs and a handful of nursing moms. Then, they were ready to make the trek back to Fredericksburg, a trip that was filled with surprises and good samaritans along the way.

"We knew this trip would be a long one---1,745 miles of drivingbut Theresa and I were determined to make it happen," said Twombly.

At a truck stop, they met a longhaul truck driver who stopped by their vehicle as they were handing the dogs peanut butter treats and giving them water. He donated $100 for food and said he'd always wanted to work with a rescue or shelter. On another stop at a Quick Time store, the entire staff helped out by ensuring the dogs had cold water.

Twombly said all of the mom dogs and nursing pups, as well as unvaccinated dogs, are being cared for by foster families. Many dogs are still at ODHS waiting to be fostered.

"It's fortunate that we were able to help the shelter by taking these dogs to ODHS," said Hamilton. "The situation there was difficult, and they had a lack of resources to care for so many dogs from the hoarding case. It's great to be able to partner in our shared mission of rescuing dogs and giving them a second chance at the lives they deserve."

Pine-hills cover the coast where a path weaves inland sheltered against the wind which has spurred breakers to dash cliffs of limestone left here from another age.

On July 7th, Neptune moves away from its home sign of Pisces and goes retrograde in the sign of Aries, where it will remain until December. The planet of dreams and rose colored glasses has the idealized fantasy ripped away to expose the true reality, often causing disillusionment. Because Neptune spends half the year in retrograde, this energy will be felt more subtly and personally, through moments alone with the Self.

And we can follow the trail under an overhang of vines continuing our walk onward and not stop until we reach someplace to share together moving forward hand-in-hand.

Fredericksburg Sketches A visual Celebration of our community

War Memorial on George Street This sketch is a bit out of the ordinary for me and it was a delightful challenge.

It was Flag Day in June and several of us had gone to the war memorial on George Street to sketch. While the others concentrated on the memorial itself, I went for the gun. If you know anything about this gun, please forgive me.

I took a lot of liberties. I did try to get the proportions right but the details eluded me. It took me about forty-five minutes but I was in full concentration mode the entire time. Nothing else mattered while I simply put marks on paper.

(Full disclosure: I added the color at home.)

If you are looking for a way to meditate, sketching something is a good one.
