Have You Played Today? BY SHANNON KELEHER - FRISCO PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR We all remember play. We remember the freedom that we felt and our complete inattention to time. For many of us the only way we knew the time was to watch for the street lights to come on, so we would know it was time to head home. As we got older our attention turned from play to study and then from study to work. Somewhere along the line we forgot about play. Our focus turned to relationships, families, and career building, which are all important pursuits. Play can make them better. Research tells us that play is just as important for adults as it is for children. It reduces stress, helps build self-confidence, improves brain function and improves relationships and connections to others. It helps you sleep better and boosts creativity. Why then do many adults not find time to play? Perhaps it’s the concept of it; the negative connotation often associated with the word. As adults we are often heard saying things such as, “Stop playing with your food,” or “Stop playing around!”

In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” And so, I ask you, “Have you played today?” As parks and recreation professionals we invite each of you to join us as we rediscover the importance of play. Just this month we launched our PlayFrisco campaign. Through this campaign we are working to remind everyone of the power and value of play as well as the numerous ways you can play right here in Frisco. Do you like art? Why not Play Artistically by visiting the Art in the Atrium exhibit or seeing a play at the Frisco Discovery Center? Do you like sports? Why not Play Actively at the Frisco Athletic Center where we offer over 300 classes per month? Do you like nature? Why not Play Naturally by visiting Cottonwood Creek or Beaver’s Bend Park? No matter how you choose to play, we invite you to Play Thankfully throughout the holiday season. Frisco Fun is now Play Frisco! Many adventures await you.

Now get out there and play!

Arts, Culture, and Special Events We’re proud in Frisco to be known as Sports City USA, but sports aren’t the only reason we’ve been named the best place to live in the U.S. Thanks to a growing population of creatives who call Frisco home, we’re becoming a destination for arts and culture. From the Frisco Discovery Center and the Public Art Program, to the Heritage Center and a year-round schedule of special events, the Parks and Recreation Department’s Arts, Culture, and Special Events division offers a wealth of activity for those who live, work and play here.

FRISCO DISCOVERY CENTER The Frisco Discovery Center offers varied arts-related experiences under one roof. The 120-seat Black Box Theater is a second home to many of the area’s performing arts groups and the Frisco Art Gallery features rotating exhibits by local, regional, and international artists in solo or group shows. Visit the Discovery Center to see a performance, learn to dance, meet a local artist, and/or tap into your creativity.

PUBLIC ART PROGRAM As you drive around Frisco, you may not realize the art you see is most likely part of our Public Art Program. With more than 80 artworks throughout the city, the program seeks to engage the community by fostering dialogue, building an understanding of art, and encouraging enjoyment of public spaces. We invite you to engage with Frisco’s public art and to visit Art in the Atrium Exhibition, at George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, which showcases works by area artists changed out twice a year and displayed on all floors.

FRISCO HERITAGE CENTER Explore the past, while imagining the future at the Frisco Heritage Center. Exhibits and programming invite visitors to learn about the rich history of the area, chronicling the community’s rise from a stop along the Shawnee Trail, to the development of the city of Frisco. Tour the museum Wednesday through Sunday or come to the monthly Third Sunday for interactive fun.

SPECIAL EVENTS Our special events offer an opportunity for the citizens of Frisco to connect with each other and come together as a community. There is something for everyone and we take pride in having the opportunity to create signature events such as Frisco Merry Main Street. The citizens of Frisco have a dedicated team working diligently to provide activities for all ages, interests, and abilities - making your experience one to remember!

We engage and educate by coming together in celebration and appreciation of the many forms of art, culture, and history that help define our community.

By Amy Paige Deatherage Frisco Parks & Recreation Board Chair GROWING A CULTURE OF TREES IN FRISCO There is an old expression: “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” While its meaning suggests that money is a resource not easy to come by; in our rapidly modernizing world, trees seem sometimes a bit harder to come by and to keep! At this year’s Arborfest, Urban Forestry Board Chair, Alan Mesches, announced in the Mayor’s Proclamation that it was the City’s 14th annual celebration. It occurs to me that I have participated in this event for nearly ten of them. As a longtime member of the Frisco Garden Club, two term member of the Urban Forestry board, and now newly appointed Chair of the Parks and Recreation board, I estimate that I have helped to plant nearly twenty trees in various parks around town. This year marks the second year that the Frisco Garden Club has incorporated the City of Frisco’s Living Legacy Tree Program, adding signage to our annual tree plantings. This program is available to the public and worthy of promotion. Your organization or family can purchase a tree to be planted in memorial or celebration, and commemorated with a plaque. “Money Magazine” recently named Frisco “The number one place to live.” Though I doubt that the number of trees had much to do with the selection process; a city without trees would surely never earn that designation. The City of Frisco Parks and Recreation Department recently instituted a tree revitalization program to save trees that are removed from medians to build or widen addition roads. This is but one of the initiatives that has kept Frisco earning “Tree City USA” designations year after year. So while money might not grow on them, the value of a tree is recognized and treasured by this City’s staff and citizens. As for me, my roots have become firmly planted in Frisco. A self-proclaimed “nature girl,” I will continue to volunteer my time to the city that dedicates so many of its resources to protecting and keeping trees, and to open spaces planning. You should too! With so many organizations and civic boards needing public input to help Frisco stay successful, consider volunteering your own time and talent in a way that brings meaning to you. I promise that it can be fun! With that, I’ll leave you with my favorite Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now!” 28

URBAN FORESTRY BOARD Why are trees important to a growing city? • Cleaner air. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and remove dust, ash, pollen and smoke from the air • Saves money. Shade provided by trees helps conserve energy and reduces costs to cool homes, schools and businesses • Helps local ecology. Provides homes and food for animals and insects • Stabilizes soil and reduces erosion • Beautification. Who doesn’t love spending time outside among the trees? • Trees and greenspaces can increase property values

What is Frisco doing to promote and protect our urban forest? Urban Forestry board activities: • Annual Arbor Day Celebration • School visits to educate children and plant trees on campuses • Nature walks in parks • Monthly meetings to discuss how to educate the public and promote the urban forest Parks and Recreation: • Works to save trees from city construction projects by relocating rather than destroying them • Community education

Frisco is a ‘Tree City’ committed to preservation and promotion of our urban forest. The Frisco Parks & Recreation Department and the city’s Urban Forestry Board work together to maintain and educate the public about the importance of our trees. Frisco was designated ‘Tree City USA’ by the National Arbor Foundation in 2003 and maintains that designation today. This was accomplished with the help of the Urban Forestry Board, which was formed in 2001.

RUFF RANGE DOG PARK EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT Eagle Scout Candidate, Nathan Barrett, Boy Scout Troop 51, just completed an improvement project at our Ruff Range Dog Park. Nathan saw that our signs were cluttered and mismatched and devised a plan for better communication at our entrances. He also designed and installed, with the help of Parks staff, four dog waste bag containers for the public to recycle plastic grocery bags within the park for dog waste pickup. Nathan improved communication, helped improve the cleanliness of the park and did something good for the environment.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We encourage you to bring your unwanted plastic grocery bags when you visit the dog park and put them in the waste bag containers for others to use. Help us keep Nathan's hard work going!
