THE PROJECT Project Location: Rushere Police, Rushere, Uganda GPS Coordinates: Latitude:00 12.662 S Longitude:030 56.370 E People Served: 750 Report Presented To: River Pointe Church

THE COUNTRY According to the 2008 UNDP report, Uganda is ranked 157th out of 182 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index, with more than 9 million people living on less than one dollar per day. At 3.3 percent, the population growth rate is one of the world’s highest and poses serious challenges to the country’s development. Health issues are another factor threatening Ugandan progress. An estimated 940,000 adults in Uganda are currently living with HIV/AIDS. Preventable diseases such as malaria, respiratory infection, and diarrhea are the main causes of mortality for children under five. In northern Uganda, nearly two decades of violent conflict between the government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) provoked a severe humanitarian crisis marked by widespread insecurity and massive displacement. While the war raged in northern Uganda, populations of IDP camps swelled beyond capacity. Unable to supply massive numbers of people with water, many existing water wells broke down. Although the LRA does not threaten the government’s authority now, there are still thousands of IDPs with no access to clean water. Pumps that did not break down from overuse were sabotaged or stolen during the conflict. Wells that once provided clean, safe water are inoperative—forcing people to collect contaminated water from open hand dug wells, rivers, and springs.

OUR WORK IN UGANDA In 2001, when operations in Uganda first started, Living Water International worked in the northern region of the country. Operations have expanded into new regions since then, and wells are now being drilled throughout the country. Living Water Uganda utilizes trained incountry teams and other partners to drill new wells, repair existing broken wells, and teach health and hygiene classes in villages and towns in desperate need of clean, safe water. A recent campaign in Uganda has helped provide clean water for schools throughout the Ruhaama district—an area like many others in Uganda where children can’t go to school because of the time they spend collecting water or because they fall ill from drinking the water they fetch from contaminated sources. For these children and so many others, water is the key to their education. Water is life. In the coming year, Living Water Uganda hopes to drill 25 new wells and rehabilitate an additional 24 existing wells.

Population: 27 million ƒ 36% without access to an improved water source ƒ 57% without adequate sanitation services ƒ 37% living below the poverty line ƒ 710,000 internally displaced people Life expectancy: 53 years Infant mortality rate: 65 per 1000 live births GNI per capita: $420 USD Sources: World Bank, UNICEF, USAID, CIA World Factbook Official statistics often understate the extent of water and sanitation problems, sometimes by a large margin. Insufficient resources for monitoring population and/or coverage as well as varying definitions of coverage and access contribute to statistical variability.

GENERAL INFORMATION

When the team arrived, the community was utilizing any water source available, because their current water system was not sufficient to meet their needs. Because of this, residents were suffering from malaria, diarrhea and severe dehydration. During the team’s stay, the community assisted by providing food for the drill team during the day. The majority of community members sustain a living by working for or owing small businesses or farming and selling their produce at local markets. The nearest school is located one kilometer away from the community whose students, teachers and administrative personnel all have access to the new, safe water source.

TESTIMONY The LWI Uganda team had an opportunity to meet with twenty-nine year old community member and local Deputy Chairman, Kenneth Muheirwe, who stated, “Water is life. You've given us life indeed. You've come to our rescue here in our community. We've had a problem of water at a high price but even sometimes paying money can't guarantee you get it. If you were lucky you could get some clean water. We had no choice. We are going to make sure we maintain this water source. I am so grateful.”

CHRISTIAN WITNESS This project is being done in partnership with Africa Renewal Ministries. They support the local church on the ground in Rushere. While LWI Uganda directly implemented the drilling of the new boreholes there was no doubt that Christ received the glory for these gifts. The LWI Uganda team will continue to pour into the local church and keep communications open as we plan to revisit the area in early April.
