Among Friends Message from the President We wish you and your family the very best at this time. While we all grew optimistic as COVID-19 restrictions were gradually relaxed across Canada, it has become clear that we are now headed into a second wave of COVID-19, with reported cases on the rise. We are doing our part to prevent the community spread of the virus by cancelling our Speaking with Friends program and our annual Book Sale, keeping our Book Store closed, and rescheduling our Annual General Meeting to the spring. We are pleased to announce the Book for Every Child campaign is being held from November 2 to December 12, 2020. Donations are appreciated and participating book stores are offering a 20% discount on books purchased for the campaign. For the list of book stores and more details on this program, see the BFEC newsletter story. We have resumed collecting donations of materials for the book store through pickup by the Friends. Donations of books and other items for the book store cannot be dropped off at library locations at this time due to COVID safety protocols. To schedule a time for Friends to pick up items, please call 519-661-2448 and leave a message with your contact details. We will return your call and make arrangements with you. Thanks to the dedication of the Friends Executive, we continue to have monthly meetings electronically by Zoom to take care of business and plan for the future. We will continue to keep you informed through periodic emails, the Among Friends newsletter and the Friends website. www.friendslondonlibrary.ca We extend our sincere thanks to you for your continued support and patience during this challenging time. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us by email at friends@lpl.ca or by phone at 519-661-2446. Stay well and stay safe. Carmen Sprovieri, President

Among Friends Friends Annual General Meeting Postponement

A Book for Every Child 2020 November 2 to December 12

At our last AGM on January 22, 2020, which was followed by a Jazz for the People concert in the Wolf Performance Hall, Carmen Sprovieri presented the President’s report, and we received the financial report for the year ending December 31, 2019 along with reports on Friends’ activities in 2019.

The 29th annual A Book for Every Child campaign has started! Through this London Public Library program, books are given to children who might otherwise not own a book. In 2019, more than 6,000 new books were given to local children through 33 schools and 21 agencies that serve families and children in our community.

In normal times, our next AGM would be in January, 2021. However, due to restrictions in this unusual year, we have not been able to conduct most of our usual activities since March. At the Central Library, the meeting rooms and the Wolf Performance Hall are closed to the public and it is uncertain, as yet, exactly when they will be reopened in the new year. Thus, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing uncertainties, the Friends Executive has decided to delay calling our AGM for January, 2021. The current slate of Officers will continue until we are able to schedule a date, hopefully sometime in the spring of 2021.

This program depends on donations from individuals and community groups. Here’s how you can give: Financial donations are greatly appreciated and can be made on the library’s website at www.lpl.ca/bfec, by calling 519-661-5100 x5460, or at any library location. Your financial donation allows library staff to purchase books that meet the specific requests for children from schools and agencies. Friends of the Library assist in the annual campaign by coordinating the participation of five local bookstores that offer a 20% discount on books purchased for the A Book for Every Child campaign and donated at the store. The participating book stores are: Chapters – South London, Coles – Masonville Place, Indigo North London, Oxford Book Shop and The Book Store at Western. Please note that, although the focused campaign, including the book store discount, takes place in November and December each year, donations can be made all year round. Donations can be made in memory of someone or as a gift to celebrate a special occasion.

Among Friends The Friends of the Library Book Store Sadly, but responsibly, the Friends of the Library Book Store has been closed since the COVID restrictions were first put in place. Our volunteers miss seeing our regular customers as we are sure you miss the Book Store. We have tentative plans to reopen in the new year, with appropriate safeguards in place, but the opening will depend upon the degree to which the current wave of infections subsides and on the availability of volunteers. Many of the Book Store volunteers are of an age that puts them at greatest risk of suffering the more severe consequences should they become infected, so we will want to ensure a safe work and shopping environment exists before calling back current volunteers or recruiting new ones.

Friends Membership Update We are really heartened by the ongoing support of our members! Not only did we get a wonderful response to our request for renewal of annual memberships last December, we have continued to receive new memberships through the last difficult months. Please note that memberships for all current members will be extended to December 31, 2021. We recognize that with the closure of the Book Store and our reduced services and program cancellations, current members are not getting all of the benefits of membership. Your current membership card will be valid until the new date and accepted once we are up and running again. Stay connected! For you to get the most out of your membership and to receive the latest updates, it is important that we are able to contact you, especially through email. If you have changed any of your contact information, please email membership@ friendslondonlibrary.ca to let us know. We want to assure you that we will never share, trade or sell the personal contact information of our members with third parties, and your information will remain confidential. Among Friends News from the Book Sale Coordinator

Arrange to Donate Materials by Pickup

We are pleased to let you know that Friends are once again accepting donations of materials, through pickup only, for eventual resale at a book sale or at the Library Book Store. Although the annual fall sale was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID-19 concerns, we are considering alternative methods by which we can sell the materials we have collected over the past year, and, at some point, the Library Book Store will reopen for business.

You can also call the same number to arrange for pickup of your donations of new and used books and other materials for the book sale and store. These donations cannot be dropped off at library locations at this time due to COVID safety protocols. To schedule a time for pickup, please call 519-661-2448 and leave a message with your contact details. We will return your call and make arrangements with you. Please share this information with friends and neighbours who may also wish to donate materials we could use for resale. Don Menard, Book Sale Coordinator

We particularly welcome donations of new fiction in any format – hardcover, paperback, graphic and books on CD. Children’s materials in good condition remain a popular seller. Older non-fiction may also have value for us, so we are happy to receive those as well. At this time, we cannot accept donations of Book of the Month Club editions and older reference encyclopedias. If you are not sure whether your materials are suitable for donation and resale, please give us a call at 519-661-2448. Leave your contact information and someone will return your call to discuss this with you.
