A New Zealand selection lost 4-1 to visiting Norwich City at Auckland's Newmarket Park in May 1979. Scorers for Norwich were Kevin Bond, England World Cup-winner star Martin Peters, Justin Fashanu and Keith Robson while Keith Nelson scored for the home side. Coached by John Adshead, the New Zealand squad included eight players who were to form the nucleus of the squad that reached the 1982 FIFA World Cup finals in Spain.
