FRIENDS HAPPENINGS Fall 2012

In this issue:

Taste of the Arts A Taste for the Arts event was held on July 25th at the Lake Mary Events Center to raise funds for our Youth Exploring the Arts (YEA) Program. The event was catered by Levan's and was well attended. Tom Yeaser provided his music for our entertainment. The evening closed with students from Dr. Music Academy who sang songs that touched our hearts and brought awareness to us that the children we serve deserve the opportunity to pursue their interests and talents and have the moral and financial support to do so.

Heathrow Women’s Club awarded us a grant in May to initiate YEA and we have already enrolled two children in band camp and piano lessons. The event was fully sponsored by Metal Essence and Machining Solutions LLC to allow all proceeds from the event to go directly to YEA. On behalf of our Board of Directors, the Guardian Ad Litem Program and most importantly the children we serve our profound thanks to all who participated in this event.

Taste of the Arts - UPDATE

I want to share one child’s story. Jonathan is 11 years old. Both of his parents are incarcerated long term. He is presently living with a relative, married with four young children. Money is tight, but they took him in rather than him having to go into foster care. Jonathan is musically gifted, he writes and composes music and plays piano by ear. We provided funds for Jonathan to attend a music camp this summer for a week. He was so excited about the experience and demonstrated his talents while there. He is very interested in taking formal piano lessons. We have enrolled him at Dr. Music Academy.

A Special Thanks to the Douglas G. Halliday Foundation for their grant of $7,500 for YEA 2

President’s Corner Summer is over and the children have all returned to school. The Heathrow Women’s Club helped us greatly with the generous donations of school supplies. Because of you a lot of happy kids were able to start school with the required school supplies. I want to personally thank all those who participated in and supported our “Taste for the Arts” fundraising event to fund our YEA (Youth Exploring the Arts Program). I had the opportunity to meet and talk with many of you. It was a great evening. The holiday season and ”Secret Santa” will be upon us before we know it. In October we request the Guardians Ad Litem to get a wish list from the children and submit them by November 15th. We then distribute the wish lists to those individuals or organizations that wish to purchase the gifts. We collect the gifts by the second week of December and begin distributing them to the Guardians who in turn get them to the children in a timely manner for the holiday. If anyone is interested in participating please call Yvonne Stimac at 407921-1987. We are always in need of hygiene items for the children and teens; toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, combs, brushes, etc. We are an all volunteer Board of Directors with no paid staff. Our Board donates annual dues to cover any administrative costs. All donations we receive go directly to the needs of the children. On behalf of FRIENDS I want to thank you for your continued support of our mission to the children we serve. These have been difficult times for so many, yet YOU continue to be committed to the interest and well being of the children we serve.

Donated Bikes The bikes were donated by Mazor Robotics, Inc., Brooklyn, NY. Who participated in a Teambuilding event organized by Wildly Different, Jane Lipps. Guardian Ad Litem, Robin McCleod, presented two bikes to siblings on one of her cases. Robin said, “Bikes were delivered. These two boys ran out of the front door to hug my neck. It was so cool!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! These children will be falling asleep with smiles on their faces. It has been a true pleasure getting to know this family; they are humble and grateful folks.”

Friends of Abused Children SCPA Summer Camp Seminole County Friends of Abused Children sponsored a few children so they were able to attend the SCPA Summer Camp. The children learned basic animal training techniques, as well as how to care for animals, and had fun playing with the animals. The interaction was amazing!
