View from the existing bridge on the new waterfront

The subject of the master thesis was to examine the relationship between the estuarial City Nantes (France) and the river Loire. Based on an analysis and a self-developed master plan, a proposal for a selected place was designed. I stayed in Nantes for a month with the support of a scholarship for research from French-German Youth Office. The results I discovered in Nantes are summarized in several plans, diagrams and photo-documentations. This geographical approach was the precondition to understand the development of the relation between the river and the city as a base for the following architectural conception.

Master Plan Loire The first part of the thesis is conceptualized on city-scale. After determining the main aim „Revitalizing the relationship between the city and the river“ and its main strategies, a catalogue of measures was created and the Master Plan Loire was drawn. The measures are acting on physical and psychological levels. The Four-Phase Model provides a tool to analyze the present status and to determine what the organizational control points and interventions are to improve the city-river-relation.

Main Strategies 1. Extending the public space from the city to the river creating public waterspaces 2. Adding functions to the river to increase its value for the inhabitants

3. Using the river as a connecting element, not as a barrier Four-Phase Model 1. status quo 2. conception

Public Waterspace Nantes The second part of the proposal is a design-proposal on a smaller scale. The quay-side of the city is selected to make an example by considering the Master Plan Loire as well as the urban situation and today‘s use of the public space in Nantes. The existing parking-space on the industrial quay-side is removed to create a smaller proportioned public waterspace. The edge of the quay is pulled down along the street-axes, the axes are extended on the water by using swimming pontoons. The shape of the pontoons is affected by the water-streamline. The pontoons offer walkways and isles to stay. Location and height of the pontoons are fixed on stilts. At low tide, the pontoons are creating a three-dimensional floating waterscape, at high tide the scape is flat.

Floating Waterscape at low tide ≥ 0,35 m

Visualization of the villa

A well-off couple wants to build their last house in Basel. Collecting African masks is their passion which they want to share with guests. Instead of proposing conventional rooms, flowing, functionally defined spatial sequences are created by the smoothly separating ramps, stairs and atriums. Every interior space has a strong interaction with a certain outside area. Spaces with different private and public qualities are interconnected by the exhibition of masks along an endless loop, made of reinforced concrete.

The Mogilskie roundabout in Krakow is divided into two levels. The upper level is for the car-traffic, the approximately seven meters lower level is for trams and pedestrian. The new structure contains varied cubes on supporting steel-frameworks in different heights so the place stays accessible. The visual connection between the two levels creates a dialogue with the city. The cubes are rented for handcraft and art producers as well as for exhibitions and cultural events. The new program changes the monofunctional traffic-node into a lively place enriched with a playful landmark in the city-scape. Section through the roundabout

Arriving by ship to Copenhagen, people first see the installation energy-mills and the cycle-boat

In the summer, people need more space outside to enjoy the weather and the longer days. Then again less public space is needed in wintertime, because people spend more time inside, protected from the weather. A system is suggested, which reacts towards the seasonal demand of private and public space. This idea is implemented by creating two chains of public spaces for Nyholmen (Copenhagen). The main chain (red) follows the waterfront like a river-walk and connects the west and the east coast. The different spaces can be extended on the water by using pontoons and bridges. The second chain (blue) consists of more semi-private spaces and paths through the new residential blocks. The Northern part of the site, the sport-area, is enriched with a module of floating platforms and a floating pool. In wintertime, all the platforms, the stage and the pool are fixed together and connected to the land. The pool may be used for ice-skating. The new installations mark the sustainable lifestyle for this area and also for the city. Arriving by ship to Copenhagen, people first see the landmarkinstallation of the energy-mills and the cycle-boat. The well adapted system of extending and compressing public space can reduce land-use, so more surface can be built with higher density. This could generate more users for the functions in the area and make the urban program more efficient. View on the sport-area

international workshop_one week_2011 _Bouwakademie Amsterdam Masterclass with Joan Busquets: Re-Inventing the Amsterdam Urban Block team: E. Tuzun, D. Kloet, D. Parleva, P. Sch端rmann, M. Cramer

The canal-belt of Amsterdam is a semicircular regular urban grid made of axes (streets in radial circulation, canals and canal-streets in concentric circulation) and the insertion of blocks. While the inner courtyards of the blocks offer private space, often inaccessible for non-habitants, the streets define the public space. Due to the regular grid, the streets have almost the same dimensions and are arranged in a constant density. This should have as a result a homogenous, uniform public space. The Amsterdam canal-belt taught us how to create a heterogeneous public space into a regular grid without landmark-constructions: The streets are like thematic axes, each with its own strict program (commerce, traffic, greenery,...) and own atmospheric quality. The continuity of the thematic axis of the urban grid is interrupted by the crossing of another thematic axis. This crosspoint creates an intense moment, because both atmospheres are multiplied by each other and because the straight view is added by a new view angle. concentric circulation

A frame-film of a walk next to the canal-street „Keizersgracht“ was made to show the effect of the atmospheric orientation. At every crossingpoint, a 360°-view was made to demonstrate the intensity that this convergence of two axes has on the pedestrian. The atmosphere-diagram shows how the atmosphere of the calm canalstreet „Keizersgracht“ is interrupted by the crossing of different radial streets, and which parameters of the atmosphere change to create intense moments. Using the thematic axis and the atmosphere as a tool for urbanism in new urban grids creates continuity and discontinuity at the same time. Furthermore the public space becomes heterogeneous and offers various amenity values. Increasing atmosphere as a universal language can be the key for identity and orientation in a cosmopolitan city.

The optical expansion of the space through the mirrored facade enlarges the area between the shopping center and the fence additionally to the coherent character which will be seen. An adhesive mirror-layer will be put over the total length of the fence without any additional constructions and destructions which makes it 100% reversible! 12 fun-frames , made out of coloured adhesive layer, are giving the people enjoyment and invite them to stop for a second to have a good time. You can wear a moustache or shake hands with the mayor of Copenhagen. Or just give a high five to yourself while another person is just good looking today. You want to see how the craftsman are doing their job? Just look through the three exciting windows and say hello to them! five months_2010_F-Paris www.edouardfrancois.fr

In 2010, I had the pleasure to be a part of the architecture agency O.A.L. Édouard François in Paris.

I worked on residential projects that gave me a better perspective on the design of large scale domestic constructions. Part of the time, I was working on competition-documents such as the following „urban village“ for Paris. Most of the time I worked on the construction-plans and building-permit documents for the running project „Le 55“, a 55m residential-high-rise for Nantes. This project led me to the subject of my master thesis. This experience allowed me to compare the German and French methods and hence enriched my knowledge in this domain. Being part of this agency, which has a very artistic, poetic and sensual approach in their creations, broadened my perspectives on architecture and design.

In 2010 the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Deutsche Stiftung Kulturlandschaft) started a competition for villages to participate in an art-project. I was asked to develop together with the inhabitants of Drรถgenbostel the aims and strategy of the project and to work-out the competition papers and a brochure. A campaign was started to take photos of the inhabitants showing their opinion on art (previous page). The candidature was successful. Stefan Dornbusch, a well-known German artist, was chosen to develop an art-project together with the inhabitants and the financial support of the foundation. Meanwhile I managed the PR and the reports for the foundation, so the project was published several times in local (Rotenburger Rundschau, Visselhรถveder Nachrichten) and national (Welt am Sonntag, Land und Forst) newspapers. I also organized the event for the opening ceremony of the art-installation.

Next to my academic studies I worked as a city-guide for the agency k3 Stadtführungen in Münster. I had the pleasure to guide children, adults and elderly from all over the world through the city-centre of Münster. I was booked for city-tours and city-rallies in German, English and French and for architecture-tours and night-walks. Furthermore I translated documents into French. I also developed city walks including the walk „secret Münster“ (Münster versteckt) and the architecture-walk for k3 Stadtführungen, with documents such as maps, timetables and information and for stops. „secret Münster“ is a walk next to the river Aa. The footpath is accompanied by a lot of greenery and some installations from the „skulpturprojekte“, an international art-exhibition in Münster. Because the river-bed is lower than the street-level, the pedestrian walks hidden from the urban life and is isolated from the noise. The lower viewpoint allows new perspectives on the city, which makes the tour interesting for locals.

Because of the unsuccessful selling of building plots, the city of Rostock has to redesign the masterplan. Citizens could submit their critics and proposals for the design. Two clients asked us, to develop improvals for the future masterplan. The personal wishes of the clients were combined with our premises of an intensive accessibility, visual references and a building structure of quality not quantity.
