Welcome to the Friedberg JCC

There is a classic movie entitled “Starman” where Jeff Bridges, playing a visiting alien from another world, asks if we – the inhabitants of Planet Earth – would like to know what he finds most beautiful about us. His answer? We are at our best when things are at their worst. And so it was this past year... With our barrier communities right in the epicenter of the storm, our friends, family and neighbors, as well as our JCC buildings, took a full-force hit as Superstorm Sandy ripped apart homes, businesses and memories. Yet amidst the rubble, loss of power and bewilderment, we were able to rise above the devastation and remember what it truly means to do for another. With tremendous help from UJA-Federation of New York, the Feil Family Foundation, the Robin Hood Foundation, the Silvian Foundation, and others far too numerous to mention, the JCC was able to immediately provide over $200,000 in cash assistance to impacted families, an additional $440,000 in additional scholarship support for families in our preschools, after-school programs, summer camps, and general programs, hire social workers and case managers to assist people still dealing with insurance, FEMA, and/or the emotional impact of the storm, and rebuild our facilities to be even stronger and more relevant than ever before. We coordinated door-to-door rescue and provided resources throughout the community, and worked hand-in-hand with our fellow human services organizations – FEGS, St. Mary’s Church, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, FEMA and others. At the moment when things were at their worst, we met the challenge of our sages – to perform acts of righteousness and to repair a broken world – not to mention validating the observations of Starman himself. As we now return to whatever this new normal may hold for us, we do it as a stronger JCC and community. We know now that we are more resilient than we knew, more capable than we thought, and more stubborn than we’d hoped. We understand better than before just how intertwined we are with one another, and what our capacity as people and as a community truly is. Welcome back to your JCC – your Jewish Community Center.

Friedberg JCC Early Childhood Centers: Oceanside, Long Beach & Merrick Our Philosophy

As leaders in the Early Childhood community, our year-round programs embrace developmentally appropriate practices and utilize differentiated teaching styles within our curriculum. We understand that each child has an individual learning style as well as a personal timetable for development. In our child-centered classrooms, individual interests are identified and activities are planned that give each child an opportunity for exploration and self-direction. Our children acquire social competence and the skills they need to succeed as lifelong learners. that guide our interactions with infants and toddlers: • To learn about themselves (self-concept) • To learn about their feelings (emotions & expressing feelings) • To learn about communicating (verbal & non verbal) • To learn about moving and doing (gross motor, fine motor & eye-hand coordination) • To acquire thinking skills (cognitive development) • To learn in a loving and caring environment (safety & security)

Infants & Toddlers Thrive in Our Loving Environment Your child’s learning evolves through relationships and responsive care given through direct, hands-on experiences and developmentally appropriate activities with people, objects, events and ideas. Your infant and toddler is encouraged to discover the world around them by exploring and playing. Developmental goals provide the framework for planning individualized experiences that support each child’s development. There ar six primary goals

Infants (6 weeks–18 months) Oceanside

By connecting with warm, caring adults at the start of life, children begin to develop the ability to connect with others throughout their lives. Here at the JCC, your baby will enjoy warm, human contact with caregivers who not only ensure the children’s safety and comfort but also foster infants’ physical, sensory, social, emotional and intellectual development.

The Friedberg JCC Early Childhood Center will be your child’s “home away from home” filled with love and smiles!!!

Toddlers (18 months–2 years) Oceanside & Long Beach

As your infant grows into a toddler, development of language and future literacy skills are greatly enhanced through daily activities and thematic units. Social skills will develop through interaction with their friends, learning to take turns, sharing, laughter, participation and, above all, having fun.

Preschool Fun Provides Solid Foundation for Excellence Our Early Childhood Programs are based on well-researched theory and proven results about how children learn and develop, including: • Active, hands-on learning • Acquisition of concepts which lead to the development of basic skills • Meaningful, relevant content and learning experiences, integrated across the content areas • Interactive teaching and cooperative learning • Attention to individual learning styles

4 Year Olds - When your child is four,

it is time to embark on a year-long learning adventure as they prepare for Kindergarten. Progressively challenging language and math experiences, as well as science, social studies and computers, will round out your child’s Pre-Kindergarten experience. Phonemic awareness and letter recognition are emphasized. Children will also further develop their fine and gross motor skills as they refine social skills and develop a clearer sense of community and responsibility.

great fun in this beginning school experience. For many two’s, this is also a first time separation. Our experienced staff will gently guide your child to a place of trust and security. Another important goal of our two year old program is language development. Children are encouraged to express themselves through language as a means of communication. Your child will have varied opportunities to further develop, expand and strengthen fine and gross motor skills. Our two’s develop social skills by interacting with both peers and adults.

3 Year Olds - Our three year olds are

introduced to a broad academic curriculum in our language and literature rich classrooms through play and small group instruction. Early math concepts are presented throughout the day, providing your child with a foundation of readiness skills. Small and gross motor development, expansion of social skills, science, music, computers, and art will also be part of your three year old’s experience.

Friedberg JCC’s Sunrise Day Camp for Children with Cancer

Sunrise Day Camp, a program of the Friedberg JCC, is the only dedicated day camp in the nation for children with cancer and their siblings. As a day camp, Sunrise safely meets our children’s needs for fun and adventure, while allowing them to enjoy the comfort and security of their own home at night.

Recognizing the extraordinary financial demands that a child’s chronic illness can have on a family, Sunrise Day Camp is offered free of charge for all children who attend.

Sunrise Day Camp and Its Year–Round Programs: Where Children with Cancer Find a New Beginning Ever y Day...

Sunrise Day Camp is more than just a summer camp. We offer programs all year round. Sunrise Fun-Days are offered during school vacation breaks and Sunrise Sundays are offered monthly. Should any of our campers be hospitalized for any reason, our staff and volunteers from “Sunshine from Sunrise” will visit with a camp bag filled with gifts. For children in outpatient clinics awaiting treatment, “Sunrise on Wheels” will be rolling in with a magical trunk filled with toys and fun.

Friedberg JCC Agency Development A Chance to Build...A Chance to Grow From a fledgling "Y" in a corner bank building, the Friedberg JCC has become the premier center for Jewish life on Long Island's South Shore and the foundation for the magic that is Sunrise Day Camp, the only dedicated day camp in the nation for children with cancer and their siblings. A center of hope and faith, a source of growth, the JCC has redefined the concept of community by creating a new model of what a Jewish Community Center can do. Our reach is only limited by our dreams, as we continue to stretch and grow far past our physcial space and into the lives of so many throughout New York and beyond. And now, we ask that you join us in assuring that the JCC keeps pace with its dreams.

Decade 2 The Friedberg JCC ~ Sunrise Day Camp Campaign

The Friedberg JCC, home of Sunrise Day Camp and so much more, is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to help expand our lifeaffirming services by supporting the construction and programmatic expansion of three major facilities: • Phase II of The Louis and Gertrude Feil Sunrise Pavilion: a $3 million construction project on the grounds of the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds. While Phase I of this new facility opened on June 2012, there is still much to be done! Phase II will include an outdoor patio for this beautiful facility which has become a critical component of the year-round programming we provide for our special campers wrestling with cancer. • The JCC’s expansion: a $3.5 million acquisition and renovation of an 18,000 square foot center right next door to our existing facility in Oceanside. This new facility will be used to expand the Health and Wellness programs of the JCC, as well as address the needs of Sunrise Day Camp children, and all children struggling with special needs. • The Friedberg JCC Weinberg Building: a $5 million programmatic and facility expansion, designed to bring our current building in line with emerging needs while securing the JCC’s future by adding sustainable services and facility upgrades.

Corporate Partners Update!
