Bright Beginnings is an initiative of the JCC —offering programs, services and support for families with children who have special needs. We have licensed therapists who provide nocost services to children (ages 3 and above) who have been approved through their school district’s preschool special education program. We offer services in our therapy gym, the Oceanside and Merrick sites, your home or other school settings. Your child does not have to attend the JCC preschool to receive services. Nadia Kalman is a 2012-2013 Literature Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Cosmopolitans, her first novel, draws upon her family’s experiences as Soviet immigrants in suburban Connecticut. It won the Emerging Writer Award from Moment magazine and was a finalist for the Rohr Prize in Jewish Literature. This warm and exuberantly comic debut tells the story of the Molochniks, Russian-Jewish immigrants in suburban Connecticut. Daughters wed, houses flood, cultures clash…and the past has a way of emerging at the most inconvenient moments (and in the strangest ways.) Equal parts Jane Austen and Gogol, The Cosmopolitans casts a sharp and sympathetic eye on the foibles and rewards of family and life in America. Fee: $8; Members, $6

Nolita / NOHO Food & Culture Walking Tour Thursday, October 3
Taste your way through the cozy corners of Nolita (North of Little Italy) where old world charm meets a youthful, downtown vibe. Walk the same streets as John Gotti and Martin Scorsese while visiting sites made famous by the Godfather. Learn about the colorful history of the Bowery. It was known for its Skid Row bums and CBGB (Country, Blue Grass and Blues) nightclub.
Soprano/Actress Helene Williams and Composer/ Conductor/Pianist/Cabaretist Leonard Lehrman, founders of Court Street Music in Valley Stream, are both formerly with the Metropolitan Opera; they have also appeared in opera and Broadway musicals all over the world, and recently performed their 550th concert together. Helene co-founded the Bronx Opera; Leonard founded the Jewish Music Theater of Berlin and the Metropolitan Philharmonic Chorus, which he still conducts.
This area transformed into a mecca for posh hotels and delectable dining. Get a glimpse of the cast-iron facades and cobble stone streets of NoHo while continuing to taste from restaurants not found in your typical NYC guidebook.
In this popular crossover program, they lend their talents to a dazzling array of Broadway love songs & showstoppers, solos & duets, ranging from old favorites to undersung gems by Bock & Harnick, Comden & Green, Harburg & Lane, Jones & Schmidt, Boca Raton's own Mildred Kayden, Lerner & Loewe, Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Coleman, Kern, Lloyd Webber, Porter, Sondheim, Bernstein and Lehrman.
