CONTENTS
THE ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER IS A COMMUNITY HUB, FOCUSING ON SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION. STAFF NEEDS HAVE OUTGROWN THEIR CURRENT HISTORIC SPACE, AND THEREFORE AN ADDITION TO SERVE BOTH STAFF AND COMMUNITY NEEDS IS REQUIRED. THE ORGANIZATION UTILIZES THEIR OUTDOOR GARDEN SPACE AS THEIR MAIN EDUCATIONAL TOOL SO MAINTAINING AND ENHANCING THE GARDEN SPACE WAS THEIR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. AS AN EDUCATION CENTER THE TEAMS GOAL IS TO UTILIZE AS MANY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FEATURES TO PROMOTE PASSIVE DESIGN FEASIBILITY TO THE COMMUNITY.

SOLAR PANEL ARRAY INSTALLED ON THE ROOF UTILIZES OTHERWISE UNUSED SPACE FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION. PRESERVING GROUND SPACE FOR EDUCATIONAL GARDEN SPACE WAS A CRITICAL GUIDELINE, THEREFORE THE UNOBSTRUCTED ROOF SPACE IS THE IDEAL LOCATION. AT 88 PANELS THAT ROUGHLY WHICH CAPTURE 290 KW/HR THE ENTRY COLLECTION POTENTIAL IS 25,520 KW/HR.

HORIZONTAL SHADING DEVICES LOCATED AT THE LARGE LOWER LEVEL GLAZING PREVENT HOT SUMMER SUN FROM OVERHEATING THE BUILDING DURING SUMMER MONTHS. THE OVERHANG IS DESIGNED TO SHADE IN SUMMER AND ALLOW FOR SOLAR HEAT GAIN DURING WINTER MONTHS.
WINDOW PLACEMENT ALIGNED ON OPPOSING SIDES OF THE BUILDING ALLOWS FOR THE BREEZE TO MOVE THROUGH THE OPEN OFFICE SPACE PROVIDING A PASSIVE COOLING AFFECT. BUILDING ORIENTATION AND LARGE OPENINGS POSITIONS TOWARDS THE PREVAILING WINDS MAXIMIZE THE AIR FLOW AND COOLING POTENTIAL.

DURING WINTER MONTHS THE SOLAR RADIATION HEATS THE CONCRETE FLOOR DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. THROUGHOUT THE EVENING THE RETAINED HEAT WILL RADIATE OUT OF THE FLOOR AND MAINTAIN TEMPERATURE. UTILIZING THERMAL MASS REDUCES ACTIVE HEATING LOADS AND INCREASES EFFICIENCY OF OTHER PASSIVE SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN CREDIT UNION (UWCU) IS A RAPIDLY EXPANDING FINANCIAL INSTITUTION WITH BRANCHES LOCATION THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN WISCONSIN. THE CLIENT’S OVER ARCHING MISSION IS TO PROVIDE INNOVATIVE, SUSTAINABLE, AND ENHANCED SERVICE AND EXPERIENCE TO ALL OF THEIR MEMBERS.

THE CLIENT’S MAJOR DESIGN PRINCIPLE IS FOR THE MAIN LOBBY SPACE TO ADDRESS THE PREDOMINANT STREET CORNER THROUGH COMPANY BRANDING. THE SIGNATURE RED METAL PANEL IDENTIFIES THE BUILDING ENTRANCE AND AIDS IN WAYFINDING. THE LOGO ON THE STONE FEATURE WALL EMPHASIZES BRAND VISIBILITY.
VOLUMES
THE BUILDING USES TWO MAIN VOLUMES TO ENHANCE THE PROGRAMMATIC SPACES INTENDED FOR GATHERING. THE HEAVILY POPULATED LOBBY SPACE HAS A ROOF HEIGHT OF 22 FT CREATING HIERARCHICAL MASS AND IDENTIFIES IT AS THE DOMINANT PROGRAM IN THE BUILDING. THE SECOND LARGEST VOLUME IS THE MEETING AND BREAK ROOM, SIGNIFYING ANOTHER GATHERING SPACE.
STREET FACADES
THE DESIGN UTILIZES GLAZING TO CREATE MULTIPLE FACES TO THE BUILDING. THIS CREATES BALANCE AND APPEAL ON ALL SIDES OF THE STRUCTURE. IN EVENING HOURS THE GLAZED VOLUMES ARE A BEACON IN THE DARK. THE GLAZING FACES TOWARDS THE MAJOR STREET FRONT AND INVITES NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN.

MEMBER EXPERIENCE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND IMPACTFUL DESIGN DECISION IN THE BRANCHES. HAVING PRIVATE CLOSING ROOM FOR SECURE CONVERSATIONS WITH GLASS FACING OUT TOWARDS THE LOBBY PROVIDES AN OPEN AND APPROACHABLE EXPRESSION TO THE MAIN LOBBY SPACE. THE GLASS ALSO PROVIDES VISIBILITY TO LOBBY ZONES FOR HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF BRANCH SECURITY.
IN PROVIDING AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE FOR THE MEMBERS, SPEED AND EFFICIENCY ARE CRITICAL FOR STAFF. PROVIDING AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE PRINTING AND CARD MAKING ZONES PROVIDES REDUCED TIME BY ENTERING THE VAULT ROOM. THE VAULT ROOM LOCATED BEHIND THE TELLER AREA IS PROVIDED WITH A DOOR DIRECTLY TO THE TELLERS IN THE EVENT A QUICK CASH WITHDRAWAL IS REQUESTED.

MATERIALITY
BRANDING THROUGH THE BUILDINGS AND DESIGN HAS BECOME KEY STRATEGY FOR MEMBERS FINDING THE BRANCHES. THE SIGNATURE RED ENTRY HAS BECOME SYNONYMOUS WITH THE CREDIT UNION, ALONG WITH THE NATURAL LOCALLY SOURCED STONE FEATURING THE COMPANY LOGO.
THE MATERIALS HAVE BECOME STANDARDIZED THROUGHOUT THE CLIENTS DESIGNS AND ULTIMATELY HAS BECOME PART OF THE BRAND IDENTIFY AND MARKETING STRATEGY. STANDARD DETAILING AND ASSEMBLIES HAS REDUCED CONSTRUCTION TIME AND COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT.

LA PINE COMMUNITY HEALTH’S NUMBER ONE MISSION WAS TO PROVIDE NON-URGENT HEALTH CARE NEEDS TO THE UNDER SERVED COMMUNITY. THE BUILDING FOCUSES ON HEALTH CARE NEEDS SUCH AS A DENTIST OFFICE, EYE CARE PHYSICIAN, AND A WOMAN’S HEALTH CLINIC. THE BUILDING ALSO FEATURES NON HEALTH RELATED USES, LIKE A SMALL CAFE AND OFFICE SPACE FOR THE CLINIC STAFF, TO BETTER STRENGTHEN THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY IN THIS SMALL TOWN 2,500 PEOPLE. THE PROJECT EXPANDED ON BOTH ORGANIZATION SPACIAL NEEDS AS WELL AS THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY, BY BEING THE FIRST THREE STORY STRUCTURE IN THE TOWN.

THE CITY OF LA PINE IS SMALL RURAL COMMUNITY SOUTH OF BEND, OREGON. THE COMMUNITY IS EXPANDING AS THE POPULATION OF EASTERN OREGON CONTINUES TO GROW, BUT THIS TOWN’S NEAREST HOSPITAL IS A 42 MINUTES DRIVE AWAY, IN GOOD CONDITIONS. THE NEAREST DENTIST IS A 31 MINUTE DRIVE. IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS MOST ARE MED FLIGHTED TO THE HOSPITAL IN BEND, DURING COVID THAT WAS REDMOND OREGON. THIS IMPACTS THE RESIDENTS HEALTH AND WELL BEING.
ALTHOUGH THE FACILITY IS NOT EQUIPPED FOR EMERGENCY SITUATION IT DOES PROVIDE PREVENTATIVE CARE AND OTHER NONURGENT NEEDS THAT THE COMMUNITY HAS NEVER SEEN. WHICH ULTIMATELY PROVIDED MORE HEALTH CARE OPTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY AND IMPROVES LIFE FOR ITS RESIDENTS.

SITE ACCESSIBILITY BROAD OVERHANGS
THE PROJECT IS AN EXPANSION TO THE CLIENTS EXISTING FACILITY AND THERE WAS A NEED FOR A SAFE ACCESSIBLE PATH BETWEEN THE TWO BUILDINGS AND PROPERTIES. A RAISED WALK WITH PLANTINGS ON EITHER SIDE CREATES A SECURE, PARK-LIKE WALKWAY BETWEEN THE TWO BUILDINGS. THE PATH AND SURROUNDING SIDEWALKS WILL BE HEATED IN THE WINTER TO PROVIDE ACCESS YEAR ROUND.
COST EFFECTIVE SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES WERE DESIGNED INTO THE PROJECT. THE CONSTRUCTION WAS ENTIRELY FUNDED BY DONATIONS SO IMPLEMENTING COST SAVING WAS A BIG PUSH. THE DESIGN FEATURES BROAD OVERHANGS THAT SHADE A GOOD PORTION OF THE BUILDING DURING PEAK SOLAR GAIN HOURS, REDUCING GLARE AND HEAT GAIN INSIDE.
GLAZED ACCENTS
STAIRS AND MAJOR BUILDING ENTRANCES ARE ACCENTED BY FLOOR TO CEILING GLAZING. THIS CHANGE IN MATERIAL AND VISUAL CONNECTION TO THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING HELPS VISITORS WITH WAYFINDING. DURING THE NIGHT THESE ELEMENTS ARE ILLUMINATED, FURTHER HELPING WITH WAYFINDING AND EXAGGERATING THE BUILDING CORE VALUE OF BEING A BEACON OF SAFETY.

CYBER DRIVE APARTMENTS IS A MIXED USE BUILDING FEATURING 40 APARTMENT, RESTAURANT, AND OFFICE SPACES. BEND IS A RAPIDLY GROWING CITY AND HOUSING IS IN HIGH DEMAND. THIS DEVELOPMENT WAS LOCATED CLOSE TO THE RIVER FRONT PARK, SHOPPING CENTERS, AND WALKING DISTANCE TO DOWNTOWN, MAKING IT A PERFECT LOCATION FOR HOUSING. THE APARTMENTS VARY IS SIZE AND TYPES, PROVIDING A VARIETY FOR POTENTIAL TENANTS. THE EXISTING BUILDING ON THE SITE WILL BE UTILIZED FOR THE RESTAURANT AND OFFICE SPACE, WHILE THE FOUR STORY ADDITION WILL BE HOUSING AND TENANT AMENITIES. THE DESIGN USED MATERIALITY TO DRAW ATTENTION TO VERTICAL CIRCULATION AND THE UNDULATING EXTERIOR FACADE.

CONCEPTUAL THESIS PROJECT
FISHERMAN’S TERMINAL WAS A COLLEGE THESIS CONCEPTUAL PROJECT, FOCUSING ON THE MASTER PLANNING AND REDEVELOPMENT OF ONE SEATTLE WASHINGTON’S MAJOR VESSEL PORT. THIS PORT PRIMARILY IS USED BY ALASKAN SALMON FISHING OPERATIONS IN THEIR OFF SEASONS AND DEDICATED TO REPAIRS AND PREPARATION. A FOCUS BUILDING WAS CHOSEN AND PROGRAMMED TO AID CREW MEMBERS AND CREATE A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE FISHING INDUSTRY AND SURROUNDING BUSINESS ZONES.
THE DESIGN INCORPORATES:

• TALL SPACES FOR INDOOR BOAT REPAIR
• INTEGRATION OF GRADE CHANGES WITH BUILDING
• HIGHLY VISIBLE WAYFINDING

SOLAR EXPOSURE
EXPANSIVE LOW SLOPED ROOF AREA PROVIDES AMPLE SPACE FOR SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION AND MAXIMIZES EXPOSURE. THE ROOF ORIENTATION BEING EAST-WEST MEANS HAVING AS MUCH EXPOSURE AS POSSIBLE, THEREFORE LOW SLOPED ROOF AND MINIMIZED ROOF TOP OBSTRUCTIONS ALLOWED FOR BEST ENERGY GAIN POTENTIAL.
HAVING THE SITE LOCATED ON A MAJOR WATERWAY RESTRICTED THE AMOUNT AND QUALITY OF RAINWATER RUN OFF. THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON CAPTURING THE RUN FROM THE STREET IN A FILTRATION BASIN UNDER ELEVATED GRADED PARKING. THE PLANTS IN THE BASIN FILTER THE WATER BEFORE IS ALLOWED TO FLOW FREELY INTO THE BAY, REDUCING CONTAMINATION AND IMPROVING WATER QUALITY.
SOLAR RADIATION AND DAYLIGHTING ARE USED STRATEGICALLY TO RECEIVE BEST RESULTS. WEST FACE OF THE BUILDING HAS THE LEAST AMOUNT OF EXPOSURE TO THE HOTTER WESTERN SUN, WHERE THE EAST HAS TALL OPENING TO ALLOW DAYLIGHTING IN MORNING HOURS TO SHINE DEEP INTO THE WORKING ZONES OF THE WAREHOUSE SPACES.
