Positive outcomes from improving my presentation skills include engaging and influencing my audience to achieve the desired outcomes. Focusing on WIIFM (what’s in it for them) has really helped in influencing people. In what specific ways have your presentation skills improved since completing Michelle's training? By using the 13 steps as a presentation framework it has helped me prepare concise and effective presentations ensuring that I communicate more effectively with my stakeholders. ! WHY ARE PEOPLE TERRIFIED OF PUBLIC SPEAKING? BY MICHELLE BOWDEN Many people have a fear of public speaking. In general, public speaking moves people out of their comfort zone and I think many people are scared of stuffing up! We don’t want to look stupid and lose respect. When the stakes are high the fear is high too. Some people cope with their fear of public speaking by making PowerPoint slides the focus of their presentation. They simply read from, or heavily rely on, their slides, which is not ideal if you are trying to influence the audience. I once observed a business development manager present to a group of financial planners at a quarterly conference. His role was to influence the planners in the room to invest their clients’ money in his fund. He made the classic mistake of putting up the first slide, with a small group of numbers printed neatly in the bottom right hand corner. It said 1/46! So what? Well, the duration of the presentation was only 45 minutes! That was more than one slide per minute. What followed is what is commonly known as subjecting the audience to ‘death by PowerPoint’ – too many slides, with too much information that people couldn’t read even if they tried. It’s common for people to use their slides as a way of moving the focus off themselves. The problem with this approach is that the audience doesn’t often respond well! As I watched the audience to see how they would respond I saw people writing notes to each other and even

folding paper aeroplanes. Eleven people got up to go to the bathroom during his presentation, even though the lunch break immediately followed. I would bet my house on the fact that no one heard what he said, no one cared what he said and no one would have decided to invest in his managed fund on the basis of his presentation. It doesn’t matter how good your message is if no one’s listening. Opportunity lost! Of course, others cope with their fear of public speaking by doing their best to avoid presenting all together, perhaps to the detriment of their career development. I really believe that most people are more nervous then they need to be, simply because they have no idea what they are ‘supposed’ to be doing to manage their nerves. There are three phases to an effective presentation: 1. Analysis 2. Design 3. Delivery Effective management of public speaking nerves is a process that can be learnt. The very knowledge that you have been proactive and taken the necessary steps to manage your emotional state during a presentation, will lead to a more positive experience, which in turn will give you even more confidence for next time.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM GYM MEMBERSHIPS? BY JUSTIN TAMSETT When a gym advertises no joining fee, months for free or some other discount people rush to join. They have sped up their buying decision based on a value equation, rather than a personal desire. The result? Within 30 days, 95% of those members who bought a discounted membership are not using the gym. The people who get maximum benefit from their membership, are the ones who want to join a gym and join regardless of any promotion. You see, the first step to improving your health or wellbeing by creating work-life balance is wanting to achieve it! This is a simple thing to say and yet is a very powerful lever for creating behaviour change. Lets look at Prochaska’s stages of behaviour change for why people cannot achieve work-life balance: Pre-contemplation: Not even considering the behaviour change as they are not ready. Contemplation: Change has now entered their mind and they are getting ready, but not ready to start; you hear people in this stage using the word ‘should’. Preparation: They are now ready to start and start to tell friends they are ‘going to’ start the new behaviour. Action: As the word suggests they are doing the new behaviour. Maintenance: The new behaviour is now started and the challenge is to maintain it, so people here now need support.

What we know is that until you are in the ‘action’ stage of creating a change in your balance you will not be committed to the new behaviour. We also know that to get to that stage a significant emotional event will cause a shift or education. If you are not in the action stage, then you are simply not ready to create the change. And if you start there is a good chance you will fail as you are not committed. Sometimes, we are heavily influenced to jump stages and start before have our mind is ready. This will often lead us into relapse as opposed to maintenance. Relapse means we start the process again. We have to be ready for the commitment to change. When you are success is imminent. BE MORE INFLUENTIAL BY MICHELLE BOWDEN Influence is one of the main ways we get things done at work. Here are some tips to help you to be more influential: 1. Build your credibility over time. Your personal credibility has a significant impact on your degree of influence.! Your credibility is determined by such things as your self confidence, your presence, your charisma, your experience, your work networks and your skill level. Solid credibility gives you a solid foundation on which to plan an influential communication strategy. 2. Be connected. Be clear in your mind about the basis on which there is the potential for a connection between you and the people you would like to persuade.! In other words, why do others need what you have to offer or why should they change in the way you would like?! What is the strategic value you have to offer?! Apart from anything else, if you are really clear about this you will have more success in matching your influencing style to the situation. 3. Build rapport. Zig Ziglar famously said: “They don’t care what you know until they know how much you care”. Work on your rapport-building skills because others cannot be persuaded unless they feel an affinity with you.! Rapport is about, trust, a common connection, mutual understanding and a functional relationship in which both parties feel at ease.! Rapportbuilding is a science and there is much to learn for those to whom it does not come naturally. 4. Be assertive. Powerful influencing requires a high degree of assertiveness.! In the 21st century people are much less likely to allow people with authority to dictate.! Yet an unassertive person will not be heard in our increasingly competitive world.! So, communicate your needs or position in a clear, direct and concise way whilst being sure to

show respect for the position and feelings of others. 5. Develop persuasive language. Language is a powerful tool in your influence toolkit. Learn how to use linguistic devices such as: alliteration; anaphora; tricolon; epistrophe; power words; and joining words to increase your influence. 6. Use social Influence. Take time to understand and apply Cialdini’s six principles of social influence. 1.

Social Proof – we look to what others do to guide our behaviour.


Reciprocity – we feel obligated to return favours performed for us.


Commitment and Consistency – we want to act consistently with our commitments and values.


Authority – we look to experts to show us the way.


Scarcity – the less available the resource, the more we want it.


Liking – the more we like people the more we want to say yes to them.

There are a variety of approaches to influencing worth learning and trying throughout your day at work. Remember, it doesn’t matter how good your company is, how good your products or service are, how good your ideas are or how good your message is if no one’s listening.! Influencing techniques will help you ensure your message is heard and will increase your chances you hear the word ‘yes’ more often in your life.

STAYING CALM WHEN UNDER ATTACK BY KEN WARREN Why is it that some people manage to stay calm and in-control when others are critical or upset with them, where others simply feel hurt, personally attacked, and become defensive? ! Obviously, we are all allowed to be human and occasionally give a human response. But for many people, their difficulty in controlling their own behaviour tends to make a bad situation much, much worse. ! So, how do you stay calm when feeling personally attacked? Here are some reminders of what you can do (or might do more of) to maintain some self-control when others are pushing your buttons. ! Think before you speak: Some people never think before they speak or act. They simply give an emotive response. They are on auto-pilot, but for many of these individuals, their auto-pilot has done their training at Kamikaze school! ! Instead we need to find a way of thinking that is helpful to us and relevant for the situation. Some constructive thoughts are: Maybe there are other things they are stressed about – I don’t have to take this personally.

Maybe they have a point – There is something valuable in this for me. This is good that they are speaking with me – It gives us a chance to work things out. If I say what I feel like saying, it is going to make the situation much worse. I need to arrange a better time for this conversation. How can I best respond? Don’t let your feelings determine your choices: People who are self-controlled certainly can feel hurt and upset, but they don’t let their emotions dictate their behaviour. Instead, they choose from a range of options, including: Simply ignoring the personal attack. Focusing instead on solutions. Demonstrating some understanding for how the other person is feeling, perhaps apologising for the misunderstanding or for how their behaviour came across.

STAYING CALM WHEN UNDER ATTACK (CONT.) Returning meanness with kindness. Act before you lose control. Given enough stress over a long-enough period of time, we are all capable of losing control, though people do this to different intensities. If you are close to developing an unhelpful mindset or acting in ways you will not feel good about, think about employing one of the following strategies before you lose control. Putting yourself out of button-pushing reach for a period of time. Finding a better time for the conversation. Refocusing your attention elsewhere, allowing yourself time to settle. Self-control is a skill, so the more you practice it, the better you get. This is also the case if you practice self-control with other matters. For example … Deliberately using your non-dominant hand. E.g. If you are right-handed, using your left hand. Starting and continue some physical exercise. Conducting difficult discussions in front of an agreed third party. Taking control of other matters that are causing you stress. E.g. Becoming tidier and more organised around the home.

With other conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or chronic pain, medication or other treatments may be what is needed. ! So, which of the following are a good fit for you? 1. Think before you speak. 2. Don’t let your feelings determine your choices. 3. Act before you lose control. 4. Deliberately practice self-control. 5. Take better care of your health. Remember that if you are finding it hard to develop self-control, a medical assessment and professional counseling can also be of help. ! I am not suggesting self-control can be easily achieved simply by tidying up your home. But self-control practiced in one area of your life can often be transferred over to another area. ! 7 SECRETS OF A STANDOUT BRAND BY MICHAEL NEAYLON Some business owners and entrepreneurs I've met or worked with think they’re brand is simply their tagline, image or logo. Vital as those elements are, I hope you know your brand is so much more than those brand touch points are on their own, because they’re results of much deeper work that’s often surprisingly’s just not always easy. To help simplify and demystify branding challenges and opportunities in today's market I’ve developed the 4M system to help you: Magnetise your brand to know and attract more of your ideal clients and opportunities. Maximise your marketing online, in print and face to face. Multiply your networks for multiple circles and spheres of influence. Monetise your brand to create the income and profits you desire. In each of those four areas, here are (just seven of many) secrets of a stand out brand. Magnetise your brand 1. Create and deliver your own brand story. In the On Brand eBook, there are examples of how Zizzi Designs built a profile by sharing the personal story of the owner Gill. Her prospects were so much more willing to buy from her. Gill

had (and has) great products. What was even more compelling was her personal story. The key to that story engaging her target market was that it was instantly identifiable to the store owners Gill was wanting to attract. Gill’s personal brand story resonated with her market, because Gill bravely bounced forward from retrenchment (through no fault of her own), overcame fears and challenges such as traveling overseas on her own and launching her first business in her mid-fifties to realise her dream. 2. Knowing me, knowing you. It’s more than just an Abba song. It’s about knowing your niche, knowing your market and articulating the results you create for them. Hollywood script writing departments have a saying ‘concept is King.’ The same applies to branding and marketing, only the message is her majesty here (especially for services).

7 SECRETS OF A STANDOUT BRAND (CONT.) 3. Pick a lane. Narrow your focus to deepen your impact. Ever seen a specialist store (say a florist) introduce a new category such as clothing? The same can go for a service business who introduces unrelated services? They’d be better to open a new store entirely for the separate category, or sell that new line online. If you’ve done this yourself, you can still make amends.

Monetise your brand 7. Brand is a promise delivered. Delivering on our brand promises reinforces our brand in immeasurable ways. Imagine Volvo without delivering on safety or Prada giving us anything less than Italian chic. Are you delivering on your brand promise?

Maximise your marketing 4. Catchy is cooler than clichéd. With more and more emphasis on content marketing (mainly due to online migration and social media), you’ll stand out much more with originality than you will rehashing content that wasn’t cutting through in the first place. If words aren’t your forte, then invest in copywriting to make your messages stick. 5. Give your brand some emotion. I don’t know about you, but I love what I do. I don’t love it every minute of every day, but I do gain immense satisfaction seeing clients make new inroads in new markets, increase profits, or save time they’d rather spend with their family. Just like any relationship (business or personal) we can all let people know how we much we value them: not just in words, but in actions too. In what other ways could you be letting your clients know you value them? Multiply your networks 6. Stop going it alone. Work with brand partners and strategic alliances, create more and deeper connections at networking events, join an industry association, see who you can share a database with perhaps. Keep creating multiple circles and spheres of influence with a clear view of who your target market is and what you deliver for them that no one else does in quite the same way. It makes you so much easier to recommend, refer and partner with.

Remember a hat is a 3 dimensional sculptural piece – not just the image you see in the mirror. Repetition of design details in your hat, dress, shoes, and bag creates unity and rhythm. It isn’t necessary to be perfectly matching – a little discord adds drama. Go to a milliner who will help you to choose a style to suit your face shape, figure, outfit, and occasion. Your garments should also follow racing etiquette. Follow the new 'ladylike' trend or discover the new winter florals with a nod to dark romance.

WHAT DO YOU DO? BY MICHELLE BOWDEN I was at a sporting event with one of my children the other day and I met a few new parents. They were very friendly and keen to connect.

Why can’t people answer this question? Is it because it’s too complicated to summarise for an ‘outsider’ to their industry? Is it because they think I don’t really care? Maybe they don’t care?

After the usual questions like, “which one is your child?” “how old are they?” “how long have they played basketball?” I asked them: “what do you do?”

I think it’s because people haven’t thought deeply enough about the answer this question. When people know what you do and how it relates to them they can refer you. It’s certainly the main way I get business. It might help you get that perfect next role too.

I’m often shocked when people can’t answer this question. I mean, it’s what you do - every day. Surely you know what you do, don’t you?

Spend some time today planning a short, clear, ‘other’s focused’ answer to the question, “what do you do?”

START WITH THE WHY? BY ANTHONY BONNICI Ever wonder how Apple has become one of the most valuable companies in the world? Was it Steve Jobs’ amazing presence and vision? Or Steve Wozniak’s quest for perfection and technical rigour?! Probably both. But what stands out quite clearly is how Apple articulates the WHY more than the WHAT. In Simon Sinek’s book Start with the Why, he makes a strong case for making us all think more about WHY we do things rather than simply HOW or WHAT we do. All companies know what they do – sell computers, provide accounting services, etc etc. But very few are good at telling the customer why they do it. Apple is really good at the why. Instead of telling us about the technical features of their products, they remind us that they are all about innovation and challenging the status quo. So in essence, if you want to “be with us”, then buy one of our products. From MP3s to computers to DVRs, Apple has become a kind of club that people wish to be a part of, and that links perfectly to our core need of belonging. It becomes Apple’s biggest differentiator in what is obviously a highly competitive and technical market.
