Cover Story Edward Norton Stars in PSA for Antarctic Protection Edward Norton fans have had a lot to talk about over the past few weeks. The star, who has been largely absent from the big screen since 2010’s “Stone”, appeared in several segments during last Sunday’s Academy Awards and has now filmed a PSA in support of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance. The coalition has started an online petition to advocate for the creation of the largest no-take marine reserve on the planet. The reserve would be established on and around the Antarctic continent and would mandate that international government policies prevent human interference with the area’s habitats and wildlife. Specifically, fishing and industrial activity in the surrounding oceans would be banned. According to the PSA, the Antarctic Ocean has become especially at-

tractive to industrial fishers because the waters are relatively untouched and so are home to large quantities of fish that no longer exist in more populated areas.

As the UN Biodiversity Ambassador, Norton brings quite a bit of notoriety and authority to the initiative. In the PSA, the actor urges fans to join the cause saying, “Everything that our lives and are civilations are built on rely on healthy ecosystems in the planet.” Given the fact that there is an upcoming international gathering of 25 nations, which will decide the fate of Antarctica’s Oceans, Norton

Sports Going Green Jeremy Lin Proves He’s Got Heart on the Court and Off It hasn’t even been a month since Jeremy Lin captivated audiences with his dazzling moves on the court, but we can already say, we’re happy the Harvard grad has made it to the big time. (And not just because I’m a New Yorker.) Lin has proven that he’s worthy of all the attention by playing like an all-star and, perhaps more importantly, giving back to others. According to Huffington Post, he autographed his game winning jersey that he wore against Kobe Bryant so that money could be raised for the Garden of Dreams Foundation. With the jersey, a meet and greet and game tickets, the point guard helped raise $42,388 for the organization which works to bring joy and once in a lifetime experiences to children facing obstacles. The money could benefit kids experiencing homelessness, illness, a loss of a parent or any other number difficulties. And that was his second donation to the organization. The man has been famous for less than a month! Between the games, the press, and wrapping his head around his newfound celebrity, it’s nice to know the budding star is looking out for others.
Eco Tech Incredible Lion Photos Taken With HighTech Remote Control Camera Photography is a high-tech industry, especially when photographers try to figure out ways to get closer to dangerous animals without putting themselves in harm’s way. Conservation photographer Will BurrardLucas has created a high-tech solution that has helped get him amazing images that would otherwise be impossible -- such as lions feasting or Komodo dragons flicking their tongues at the lens. Most recently Burrard-Lucas has made modifications to their “BeetleCam” that provide photographers with even more flexibility for getting images, and these incredible photos of lions show off what is possible. Brothers Will and Matt devised the BeetleCam in 2009 in order to get close-up photos of African wildlife. It is essentially a remote-controlled car with a DSLR mounted to the top. But after an unfortunate encounter with a lion, it was clear the BeetleCam needed to be armored up so the brothers added some armor and made a few design tweaks to come up with the current model.
Cool Eco-News Thousands Tell Amazon to Ban Sales of Dolphin and Whale Meat Recently, the news broke that a site owned by Amazon.com, Amazon.jp in Japan, was illegally selling whale meat. The massive public outrage in response caused Amazon to remove the items from their site. Many animal advocates and conservationists are telling Amazon that they haven’t gotten far enough yet, though. A Change.org petition has been started demanding that the company establishes a policy permanently banning the sale of dolphin and whale meat. Melissa Sehgal is currently in Japan as a Cove Guardian documenting the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji as well as their capture for captivity. She started the petition that has gathered over 123,000 signatures from around the world. “Quietly pulling those products from their site is not enough. It’s time for Amazon.com to put a permanent ban on whale, dolphin, and porpoise meat in place. I know that not everyone can come to Japan to join me to speak out for dolphins and whales, but together we can convince Amazon to permanently stop selling all whale, dolphin, and porpoise products. If Amazon–the largest online retailer in the world–were to adopt a policy like this, it would send a clear message to the world,” Sehgal adds. Amazon has yet to respond, but over 100,000 people and bad press around the globe are hard to ignore.
Green Music Miley Cyrus and More Team Up for Sean Penn’s Haiti PSA Video Sean Penn was honored earlier this year for his humanitarian efforts in Haiti. Now, he will be in a star-studded PSA created by his J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the video directed by actress Soleil Moon Frye stars Miley Cyrus, Zooey Deschanel, Edward Norton, Pras, Sarah Silverman, LL Cool J, and Eric Dane. Cyrus has also appeared in an auction video for J/P HRO, in which she takes a picture of herself and signs it as an auction item. Another video stars Rainn Wilson who has a script signed by the cast of The Office. Wilson jokes, “This little gem — hello — a cast-signed Office script worth billions. So much better than Edward Norton’s signed Illusionist DVD. Who even understood that movie?”
Vehicles Volt Problems Could Hurt Obama’s Electric-Car Plan
St. Camillus Rehabilitation & nuRsing CenteR
General Motors’ announcement Friday that it would halt production of its plug-in hybrid car, the Volt, for five weeks figures to threaten President Obama’s stated goal of seeing a million electric cars in the U.S. by 2015. That goal assumed that the Volt would become the industry leader and that GM would have produced 505,000 Volts by then. Another mainstay of the president’s electric-car plans, Fisker Automotive’s Nina plug-in, is also on hold. The federal government is not advancing new loan payments because Fisker didn’t produce and sell as many of its firstgeneration cars as it promised. The government has made several investments to promote the electric car industry, including granting GM $105.9 million to help it produce battery packs for the Volt, and $151.4 million in a grant for LG Chem to produce battery cells for the Volt. The government also gives buyers of electric cars a tax credit. The company said on Friday it will halt production

“Well, of course, buying energyefficient appliances is one thing. Changing your light bulbs to energy-efficient light bulbs, trying to get a car that gets better gas mileage, keeping your tires properly inflated.”
“It’s very important for me to stay green. [On tour we try to be] as green as possible, as much as we can to reduce our carbon footprint– very few fossil fuels. And you know what else I’m going to do? I’m gonna vote this year. I’ve never voted on a non-presidental election year.”
Alicia Emily Silverstone Deschanel “Compost, for sure. We have a badass compost. I bought a baby bag of worms eight years ago and put it in the compost, and now there are bazillions of them. And it’s like the dirt is so delicious, you could eat it!”
“There is no such thing as a meat eating environmentalist. Nowadays being green is fashionable, especially in Hollywood. While I think it’s terrific to recycle you can have an even greater impact on the environment by making one simple choice: don’t eat meat.”
“My car flooded about four years ago and waiting for insurance to kind of come through with the money…I took the bus and the train and I found that it enriched my life. It actually made my life better to slow down a little bit and walk through this city and interact with people.”

“There are so many things that everybody can do. Am I going to get some food in a Styrofoam container? Or am I going to bring my own cup and my own cutlery set and say I won’t participate in a disposable society?”
“It might not be possible for everyone to live a completely green lifestyle, but we can do little things to help slow global warming. People could just help by unplugging their phone chargers and turning off the TV when they’re not watching it.”
“1. Visit your local farmers market, and purchase organic produce 2. Start a small garden in your own home or school 3. Share with friends and family the importance of eating natural/pesticide free foods
“Vintage clothes and upcycling are just the start because they save scarce resources and avoid waste. Fashion clearly makes people feel good, but now it has to do the world good, too.”
“For adults, it’s never too late to start making a small difference in the world. We too can clean up the beach, donate clothes or office supplies to shelters, and volunteer at senior citizen’s centers. Teach that one person can change the world because it’s true.”
