The President’s Perspective: Worthy of our Efforts
French Camp TODAY
Most of the time when someone has been working hard at a task, they have something to show for it. It may be a clean kitchen, a freshly mowed lawn, or a completed building. Here, where I live, it is easy to see where an energetic, hard-working French Camp group of young people has been on campus. Things are moved, reshaped, cleaned, and structured for their intended purposes.
French Camp TODAY (USPS 210-100) is published quarterly in March, June, September and December each year by French Camp Academy, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Periodical postage paid at Hattiesburg, MS and all additional mailing offices. POSTMASTER: Send address changes to French Camp TODAY, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745-9703.
Also, unseen things take shape at the same time. Minds, hands, and hearts are put to the task and the result is transformative. This transformation is not only one we see with our physical eye, but it is seen internally, too. Confidence is built, minds are stretched, and the feeling of accomplishing something with a team is unmatched. Building Christian community takes work, too. A Christian community, marked by love and sacrifice to each other in Christ, is a value we hold dear at French Camp Academy. Without it, we have no pattern for ministry or avenue for healing from life’s blows. It takes intentional effort to build relationships with young people and adults. You may even find yourself in the local church asking how God might use you in the lives of other people. Believe me, investing in others takes prayerful planning and follow through as you touch the lives of others with the hope of seeing the Gospel take root.
This kind of risk-taking work is crucial in Christian communities because we hope to be transformational and be used as tools in God’s kingdom that He uses to redeem the lives of others. The weak, fallen, broken, repentant, and struggling are upheld. F. Stewart Edwards, Jr. Although, our best efforts are FCA President tainted with the remaining effects of sin, God uses our meager efforts. Why wouldn’t He? God calls and invites each of His adopted children to be part of a larger purpose that He has prepared before the foundation of time. That special and unique work is to bring glory to His name as we seek to help others discover their truest identity in relationship to Him. Your support of French Camp Academy helps in this great work of building and re-building lives. Prayer takes work. Giving sacrificially can be labor intensive. Volunteering and telling others about French Camp Academy takes your time and energy. Thank you! Together, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are providing a safe, healing community here in French Camp where people can experience the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.—Hebrews 10:24-25

FCA Work Program Why Work? In the beginning, God worked. He creatively spoke everything into existence in the course of 6 days, and on the 7th day He rested from His labors. As image-bearers, we also were created to have meaningful purpose and express the image of God in all that we do. Before Adam and Eve fell into sin, God gave them work to do. From that day forward, though our best efforts are tainted with sin, God desires for people to enjoy meaningful labor that provides for their daily necessities and help others in need. The work program at FCA is designed to introduce our students to career paths, teach them a Christian work ethic, develop skills, discover talents, and ultimately serve others. Each afternoon, students in grades 7–12 report either to work or athletics. From 3:30–5:00, Monday through Friday, and Saturday morning, staff members mentor and train our young people in a variety of areas, including guest services and hospitality skills, landscaping and lawn care, food services, data entry, telephone skills, photography, desktop publishing, horse crew, and more! v
Each lesson learned on a work crew is a valuable skill that you take with you into adulthood. Some of those include how to cook a meal for your family, how to clean your home, and how to take care of your belongings. Professional behavior, time management, customer service, and communication skills are all lessons we need to learn in life.
At the Double Blessings Thrift Store, you learn retail skills.
On the Landscaping Team, you learn landscaping and property management.

Spencer-McCain Restoration Complete! God’s provisions through many people made it possible for Spencer-McCain Home to be totally renovated. Moth-balled for five years, this comfortable home is now open. Crystal and Curtis Holman serve as house parents to girls who are all slowly making this their home. Walls were torn down and rooms were reconfigured. New pipes, wiring, appliances, walls, foundation work, carpet, paint, and expanded closets along with a new road access and carport were all items on the “to-do” list needing to be addressed in Spencer-McCain. Volunteers and sub-contractors worked diligently just in time for the home to be open in January of this year. With gratitude we praise God for those who gave to this important project. WFCA, a ministry of French Camp Academy, launched a giving campaign in the fall; many stepped up and gave generously. Parkway Methodist Church from Florence, AL sensed a need and responded in a big way. The appliances in the home were given by Mr. Henry Jones and family in memory of his mother, Lizzie Anderson Jones (1878-1934). Generosity abounds through God’s people providing for the needs of deserving young people! Now, the real work begins! Pray that the love of Christ will resonate with the young hearts living in this home and they each will be built up in Him as God’s workmanship created to do good works. v

A Dedicated Life
Russ Akers faithfully served alongside his loving wife as a house parent for 30 years quietly shepherding hundreds of young teenage girls in their home. His influence taught them about marriage, parenting, faith, hard work, the art of meaningful conversation, and laughter. He also taught us all how to persevere with grace through the challenges of Parkinson’s disease by humbly walking with Christ until the very end. Russ worked with the horse program alongside Ken Utley for many years, as well as served as the French Camp Volunteer Fire Department Chief and served as pastor at a small independent Methodist Church for years. It’s the faithful witness of God’s people that bears testimony to His grace at work in our lives. We praise God for the life and legacy of Russ Akers, a life dedicated to healing broken hearts. v
Board Member Spotlight: Lee Lampton Lee Lampton has served on the FCA Board of Trustees since December 2004. Being Vice Chairman of the Executive Council and Co-Chairman of the Student Life Committee as well as serving on the Audit and Investment committee gives him a broad view of FCA’s ministry. Lee currently serves as a Board member to Ergon, Inc., a Jackson-based corporation. Lee received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Mississippi College. His wife, Maggi, and he are members of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Jackson. They have two children, Amy and Lee, Jr.
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Gen. 2:15
We are very blessed and thankful for Lee’s longstanding commitment to serving FCA and its young people. v

A Horse Named Moonlight
Hi, my name is Imani and I’ve been here for two years going on my third year. My favorite horse at the arena at French Camp is Moonlight. Moonlight is the best. It used to be M.J. but I gave him to Tristan. When I first rode Moonlight, he was very good. He likes to catch up to the other horses because he does not want to be behind. Moonlight is a good listener too. Like if I tell him to go right, he will go right. If I tell him to go left, he will go left. Moonlight has beautiful blue eyes and white fur and a beautiful peach tail. Moonlight is sweet, nice, and kind. I know horses probably can’t be kind, but Moonlight is kind because when I try to give him a hug, he thinks I am telling him to go back, but I’m giving him a hug. Moonlight tries to eat leaves when I go on trails. He thinks that I am saying he can’t have leaves, but I am saying that he can. Imani is a 10-year-old student in Griffin Home. She is in the 3rd grade. v
Fort Worth Mission Trip For the 13th year in a row, FCA sent a team to minister to the homeless with Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas. Our team was winsome and well prepared to show the love of Christ. We led praise services every day using skits, puppets, music, testimonies, and interpretive dances prepared and rehearsed in advance. Always a highlight was Friday night on the streets, taking hygiene packs and blankets to the homeless in their makeshift shelters. We also helped organize a clothing distribution and did a carpentry project. Praise God for safe travel, good health, the privilege of serving, and for the Kingdom resources given. After covering expenses, the short-term mission’s team was also able to bless the ministry of Beautiful Feet monetarily. Serving God in some places takes lots of heart work, a dependence on Him to yield results, and your faithful prayers and support. v

Christmas Time at French Camp: The sparkly lights were strung on French Camp Main Street creating a seasonal flare and providing just the right atmosphere for students and staff to participate in Christmas programs, caroling, and providing gifts for others in need. The Christmas Banquet, sponsored by Grace Evangelical Church in Germantown, TN is a special treat for everyone. Many churches and volunteers keep the season bright with gifts and parties for the student homes.
We asked our faithful supporters to return a Christmas Card to our students and staff this year. Boy, did you respond! The cards were displayed in the dining hall for all our students and staff to enjoy. Thank you! We really felt the love!

Cody C. McGary Earns Eagle Cody C. McGary, a current senior at French Camp Academy (Class of 2022), in spite of all the demands of his Senior Year of High School, took the time to complete requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout. Cody serves as the Senior Patrol Leader for our local BSA Troop 109. In addition to earning Eagle, he also earned three additional Palms. Cody’s Eagle project served Camp of the Rising Son (CRS), a place near and dear to Cody’s heart. He grew up attending CRS and served as a Chief this past summer. Cody coordinated, planned, and raised funds to construct a new tent platform that is utilized by CRS for its high adventure program. Cody, the son of Jennifer (FCA Class of ‘96) and David McGary of Eupora, MS, will attend Itawamba Community College and study Secondary Education with the desire to teach History. v
