Christmas is Coming

Christmas is coming…and there are lots of details to organize! For many, Christmas can be an overwhelming experience void of “Joy to the World” and full of busy activity that robs our lives of hope and love.

For many young people living and learning at French Camp Academy, knowing that Christmas is right around the corner is a time of sadness. Those who have lost loved ones, and there are plenty here who have, grieve even more. Holidays tend to bring the worst out of dysfunctional families, too. Our children often anticipate those unpleasant encounters before they go home to visit relatives, and their behavior shows. Sadness is magnified. And so, those who labor at French Camp Academy are reminded where to focus our gaze as we approach the most wonderful time of the year. We point our youngsters to the most incredible thing that has ever happened in the history of the world. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth—John 1:14 God became flesh! And because He did, all the chaos in our lives, the bumps,

bruises, and everything in-between find meaning and purpose. Forgiveness is offered. Hope is restored. Real love can be experienced. The wounds can heal because Christmas is almost here. But there is something else that the faithful staff at FCA dwell on. We are reminded that Jesus never left. He came to this earth to offer redemption and give His life as a ransom for many. He didn’t leave, though. Yes, he ascended into the clouds. We all know that passage. He left something, His Holy Spirit. After all, Jesus did say, I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me— John 14:18-19. You, me, our young people are not alone at Christmas or at any other time during the year. The world is a mess. We see it every day in the lives of young people. Many young people come to us without a clue about God. Values and truth seem to be ignored, and because they are, young lives suffer. We know where to point them, though. Christ has come into this world to save sinners, to usher in a new type of Kingdom. And because He is always with us and will never forsake us, I find joy in the Christmas season. Take hope, dear Christian! Christmas is coming! v

Cultivating Faith in the Classroom

Teaching students to apply their Christian faith as they interact with a world of ideas is a way FCA prepares young people for the next phase of life. In the FCA English department, our teachers are deliberate in their integration of a Christian world and life view. Vickie Robinson, an English teacher at FCA, said, “Literature is full of teachable moments.” Just recently, her class read an excerpt from Of Plymouth Plantation which said, “Squanto continued with them and was their interpreter and was a special instrument sent of God for their good beyond their expectation.” Ephesians 3:20 was brought up and a discussion was then led on how God can do exceedingly above all that we can ask or think. God was gracious to give the pilgrims someone who spoke English to help them! Anne Clair Serio teaches a senior English class at FCA. Currently, she is using The Screwtape Letters written by C.S. Lewis to teach students literary skills and writing mechanics while helping them combat the undermining tactics of Satan with the Truth of God’s Word. Pray for our teachers as they use the classroom as an opportunity to apply God’s Truth in all areas of life. v

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. —Job 19:25

House Parents Cultivating Faith

Teaching young people about faith is an important value promoted at French Camp Academy. House parents spend time leading devotions, Bible studies, and use life circumstances to teach lessons on living out one’s faith in Christ. Cindy and Mike Thompson, house parents in His Way Home, are taking their girls through Philippians 4:8. A relationship with Christ can lead to joy in our work and lead to greater appreciation for the relationships God gives us. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson love to lead the girls through meaningful group exercises that apply the truth of God’s Word to important themes in life. The right focus makes all the difference, a Philippians 4:8 principle. Danny and Susan Donald, house parents in Flowers Home, are teaching their boys how to apply their faith in a secular culture that wants nothing to do with the claims of Christ. When these young men graduate from high school, we want them to know how to navigate conversations and relationships as they pursue their career calling. Please pray for our house parents as they cultivate faith in their homes and are used to strengthen the children and teenagers under their care. v

Giving to FCA in December December is the most anticipated month for giving that helps create ministry impact providing a firm foundation for the New Year. Christmas gifts can be made in several ways. Here are a few: Of course, gifts of cash are the most popular way to bring Christmas cheer to FCA. Your gift of cash is simple to do. Write a check and mail it to French Camp Academy, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745 or give online at www.frenchcamp.org. Gifts of securities are more than stocking stuffers! Stock can be one of the most valuable ways of giving. If your gift of stock is one you have owned for more than one year, you may deduct the full fair market value as a charitable contribution, while bypassing applicable capital gains taxes if the stock has appreciated. Real Estate Gifts of appreciated real estate are similar to gifts of appreciated stock. Assuming you have owned the property for more than one year, you may deduct the fair market value as a charitable contribution while bypassing all capital gains taxes, making a nice present for both FCA and your family. Life insurance is a unique way to wrap FCA with more love than you ever thought possible. To qualify, French Camp Academy needs to become both owner and beneficiary; no incidents of ownership can be retained. If the policy is paid up, your charitable contribution is generally the replacement value or cost basis of the policy, whichever is less. Ongoing premiums paid on a gifted life insurance policy also qualify for charitable deductions. With a charitable gift annuity, you and/or someone you designate receive fixed payments for life at an attractive rate, based on your age(s). You may also defer the payments until a future date; this usually provides greater annual income. You get a tax deduction the year the gift is made, plus a tax-free return of principal. Applicable capital gains tax is deferred if the annuity is funded with appreciated assets. Part of your gift helps FCA right now, which brings lots of joy to smiling faces. For specific recommendations, each person should consult his or her qualified professional advisor. If you would like further information about how your charitable gift can help serve the young people at French Camp Academy, please call Lance Ragsdale, Vice President of Development at 662-547-6482 or e-mail lragsdale@frenchcamp.org. v

Leverage your Stocks for Christ!

Have you been keeping up with the stock market over the past year? If you have investments in a stock portfolio, I have a feeling you have. Appreciated stocks, mutual funds, and bonds in a taxable investment portfolio can be transferred as gifts to support French Camp’s work with young people. Giving stocks (that you have held for more than one year) directly to a ministry provides a significant opportunity to avoid capital gains tax, receive a deduction at the full market value of the securities, and simplify your giving. In fact, giving appreciated stock can be more beneficial than giving cash! If you feel led to give this way, give Lance Ragsdale a call at 662-547-6482 or email (lragsdale@frenchcamp.org) to get instructions or to answer any questions you have about transferring stocks, mutual funds, or bonds. v

Playing Christmas

French Camp TODAY • WINTER 2021 • 7

Dressing up has always been fun for children. This lively group of young people were helping with a photo shoot back in October depicting a manger scene. Seeing their darling faces peek out of old bathrobes and head coverings made from towels was a sweet experience for the photographers. Playing Christmas is so much fun with young people. It was also an opportunity! We stopped and talked about the Christmas story and why it’s important to remember our Savior’s humble beginning on Earth. For God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him—John 3:17. God providing a way for sinful man to be forgiven draws us to the Christmas story, not gifts, or baked goods, or parties. The message of Christmas is about Jesus, the God-Man who gave His life as a ransom for many. As the season approaches, remind yourself that in this broken, corrupt world, thousands of distractions will take your time and energy if you allow them. Make sure to have moments where you pause and remember a tiny baby coming to earth to have a real relationship with you today. Don’t get caught playing Christmas. v

Music Therapy has come to French Camp Academy! Leah Bentley, FCA Choral Director and Music Therapist

Music Therapy has come to French Camp Academy! Music Therapist and FCA Choral Director, Leah Bentley utilizes her years of study and clinical experience to implement evidence-based music-centered experiences to help individuals find wholeness, healing, restoration, and freedom in Jesus. Every musical experience used during therapy is methodical, intentional, individualized, and clinically based. In other words, musical experiences have intentional purpose in the counseling room. If someone were to observe a music therapy session s/he might see songwriting, instrumental/vocal improvisation, musical games, music and movement/dance, music-assisted relaxation, guided music and imagery, song discussion/lyric analysis, or recording of musical projects. At French Camp Academy, the main goal of the Music Therapist is to use music to help each participant strengthen his/her relationship with the Living God so s/he can find complete wholeness, healing, and freedom in Him. Pray for Miss Bentley as she develops this important new aspect of ministry on the FCA campus. Her love for young people, passion for Christ, and unique experience in music is a valuable asset in the world of music at French Camp. v

A Resource to Churches

One of the great blessings French Camp Academy is sharing its work and ministry to God’s people. The work of French Camp is really an extension of God’s call on the church to “Go and make disciples…” Rev. Gary Maze, interim pastor at Pinelake Church in Clinton, MS and Director of Operations at French Camp Academy says it well. “One of the great privileges of being at French Camp is being able to speak at churches, to be able to faithfully redeem and change the lives of students and their families. At the core of its mission French Camp Academy provides help for families in trouble. Churches are full of individuals, families, and individuals who need some help with their families and children.” To learn more about French Camp’s work with churches, scan the QR code with your smart phone camera to watch a video with Gary sharing more about how your church can get involved or login to www.frenchcamp.org/churches. v

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.—James 1:17

French Camp TODAY • WINTER 2021 • 15

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year! This truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and it all begins with Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving Day on the calendar; yes, but more importantly thanksgiving in our hearts! Our hearts are filled with praise and thanksgiving to our most gracious Heavenly Father, for so many precious people, special places, and wonderful events in our lives!

We are grateful for recent improvements in the area surrounding the French Camp Academy sign. The beautiful new landscaping was provided and installed with volunteer labor by the Choctaw County Master Gardeners.

As an Alumni Association we are particularly thankful for the return of Alumni Day, Harvest Festival, and the Alumni/Staff soup supper! It was at these events, that talk of restoring The Tabernacle began to take hold. Many in our alumni body have voiced much opinion about adopting The Tabernacle as an official restoration project. We are excited to report to you that we have met with and received the blessing of the president of FCA to proceed with planning The Tabernacle on the Hill project! Your Alumni Council spent much time meeting, planning, and praying over the future plans for The Tabernacle. Our goal is to return The Tabernacle to its original, open-air structure, to recreate a beautiful place students can use, for musical performances, karaoke, special chapel services, movie nights, and so much more! Of course, we cannot proceed monetarily until the full Alumni body votes to adopt The Tabernacle on the Hill as an official Alumni Association project in May. There is much more planning to be done.

In order to restore The Tabernacle WE NEED YOUR HELP! To adequately assess true interest in preserving the Tabernacle, we need your pledge! • Pledge to serve! Would you be willing to serve on our Project Committee? • Pledge your expertise! Are you an engineer, a contractor, roofer, plumber, electrician, or landscape architect? • Pledge your financial support! No donations are needed at this time. Simply reply with a pledge of the amount you are willing to donate in the future, should the Alumni Association vote to adopt the Tabernacle as a project in May.

Congratulations to Taylor Benoit for signing with Mississippi College with a scholarship to compete in Cross Country and Track and Field. Pictured from left to right: Coach Drew Lewis, parents Jessica and Michael Curtis, Taylor, and Head Coach Joe Watkins.

70th Harvest Festival

As a step of faith in 1951, churches in the French Camp community and French Camp Academy came together to raise funds for the work of Christian ministry in the area. The second Saturday in October holds a special place in the hearts of the French Camp community. This year didn’t disappoint! It was a beautiful day with great weather, a country store full of goodies, good food, and great company. The highlight of this year’s auction was the last quilt Mrs. Irene Taylor made almost twenty years ago. Mrs. Irene helped spearhead the FCA Quilting Program years ago. Donated to FCA to be auctioned again, Mrs. Irene’s cathedral-style quilt brought long-lost family together, as well as a record-breaking price. Contact your family and friends and make plans to attend on October 8, 2022.
