A Passion for Work

Mr. Akers shaped Mary Grace and gave her a desire to pursue medical training. After graduation in 2020, Mary Grace left for Texas to begin college and will eventually go to nursing school.

Mary Grace came to FCA from Tupelo when she was in the middle of her 7th grade year. She was full of energy, eager to learn, and needed focus in her life. In the beginning, God created people to work. He gave people identity and purpose. You can read all about it in Genesis 1. You will see statements like: Fill the earth. Subdue it. Rule over creation. God wants people to be productive, useful, and contribute to the needs of society. Unfortunately, sin entered onto the scene and now many in our culture today have distorted a biblical view of work. Messages like: Avoid it at all cost. It is a necessary evil. Work is simply a way to get what you want. I have a right to stuff without working for it. Many of these negative attitudes and beliefs differ from a biblical perspective of work. The attitudes and ethics of life often are shaped early in a young person’s life. That is why French Camp Academy appreciates opportunities to rub shoulders with deserving young people like Mary Grace. After living with Russ and Carolyn Akers in Buchanan Home for a season, she began volunteering at the local French Camp Volunteer Fire Station learning all aspects of being a first responder on an accident. Being mentored by

Students Work at FCA Work wasn’t meant to be a chore in the beginning. God gave Adam and Eve some land. The soil was perfect! The fruit from their labor was satisfying. Work was good, and life had meaning! And then it happened! Sin entered the workplace. Weeds shot up. Life got complicated quickly, and work became drudgery.

“The FCA Work Program allowed me to have my house parent, Mr. Akers, as a work crew leader. During that time, we talked about Emergency Medical Responding. After some time of us talking about it, I decided to participate in a CPR/ AED certification class. During that class I discovered that I wanted to help people. I found it to be my true calling. I am now pursuing that career by studying to be a Registered Nurse with the goal of working/running an emergency room floor.” —Mary Grace, Class of 2020 Yes, work can be difficult, challenging, and even stressful at times, but when Christ is at the center of it, work is an ethic God has instilled in all of us to be used to help and serve others for the glory of God. Pray for the FCA Work Program to build and equip other students like Mary Grace who are willing to give their lives to help others. v French Camp strives to teach a different model of viewing work because we believe a perspective shaped by God’s Word can change our views on labor and transform a life to follow. Every afternoon Monday– Friday and Saturday mornings most of our young people in 7th–12th grades are assigned to work coordinators. If you visit our campus during those hours throughout the week, you will notice young people accomplishing and learning different tasks. Photography, weed eating, retail, writing thank you notes to FCA supporters, cleaning offices, answering telephones, operating a back-hoe, and a host of other activities provide opportunities for adults to teach young people life skills and develop habits of working every day. All of our young people, no matter their age, learn to be responsible for their rooms and homes by completing assigned chores. Sound biblical teaching supports all the work we do with young people ensuring that a Christ-focused worldview shapes their lives. The work program at FCA is designed to point students into career paths, teach them a Christian work ethic, develop skills and enhance talents, and ultimately serve others as they follow their God-given calling in life. v

The President’s Perspective:

French Camp TODAY

An Intended Purpose

French Camp TODAY (USPS 210-100) is published quarterly in March, June, September and December each year by French Camp Academy, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Periodical postage paid at Hattiesburg, MS and all additional mailing offices. POSTMASTER: Send address changes to French Camp TODAY, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745-9703.

French Camp Academy has a lot of tools and gadgets for all the work we do: hammers, cameras, rakes, computers, drills, spatulas, weed eaters, tractors, and the list goes on. Part of our work program’s purpose is to instruct young people on the proper use of these tools and the dangers associated with using them in a way they were not intended. We do not use a kitchen spatula to drive a nail, nor do we use shovels to finish concrete. While you can use those things, the intended consequences never turn out right and ultimately the tools get damaged and broken beyond repair.

Not an Easy Road

The road of life has been bumpy, to say the least, for many of us in these last months. Staying the course in our thoughts and attitudes can be a challenge. When I struggle with what the world throws at me, I remind myself of who I am, and what I have been created to do and be. Cultural lies like working only for a paycheck or that my work is not important are confronted and dissolved through the truth of God’s Word. The Bible gives us this information and encouragement in days like these to “stay the While the instruction on using tools properly is course” even when things do not appear to be gohelpful and right, our ultimate goal is to instruct ing our way. young people of their intended purpose. This process is similar to God’s work in our lives. We want young people to know how God has unique- A Kingdom Vision As believers (the church), our ultimate purpose ly gifted each one of them. Mission Statement

French Camp Academy, a Christcentered home and school, exists to serve young people and families for the glory of God.

4 • French Camp TODAY • SPRING 2021

Is God calling you to be a house parent? By August of 2021, we plan to have two homes back online and ready to receive young people. Moriah Home has been under renovation and expansion. Spencer-McCain Home will be renovated and ready to open this Fall.

www.frenchcamp.org

Refer Families to French Camp Academy If you are like me, you don’t always know how to help young people like Kevin, Hannah, and Susan.

Re-opening these two homes will create space for deserving young people to experience gospel rich conversations and activities, healing relationships, structure, and lots of nurture within the French Camp framework. This means French Camp is praying for Christian couples who will share their lives serving youth in life-on-life ministry.

Kevin was in trouble. After his parent’s divorce, his grades began to fall, and he has been hanging around with a dangerous crowd. Kevin is angry and distrustful of adults right now. He needs a safe place to begin rebuilding his trust. A place where adults treat young people with respect and honor their word.

If you love Christ, young people, have a burden to see children and teenagers come to Christ, and look for opportunities to have meaningful, life changing conversations, then French Camp Academy may be the perfect place for you to invest your time, energy, and talents. Perhaps God is calling you to be a house parent?

Hannah was also in trouble. Since moving in with her grandparents, she has become rebellious and disrespectful. She needs a place with routine and accountability. A place where her days are scheduled for her and her behavior has rewards and consequences, where she can get back on track.

Explore that question by reaching out to Randy Martin at rmartin@frenchcamp.org.

Quotes from House Parents at French Camp Academy You must know that you will be doing ministry to help young people, but in reality, God will be doing a work in you through the students, staff, and the circumstances of life here at FCA.—Steve I have been amazed how God has not only used my giftings, strengths, and successes but even more so He has used my weaknesses, failures, and pain to have impact in the lives of the young people He has placed in my home.—Randy When you lie down at night, you’ll be exhausted, but totally fulfilled having invested your life that day for His eternal Kingdom.—Dennis The biggest surprise about being a house parent is how much these young people become an extension of your family. Even though they aren’t your young people you truly care for them like they are. You celebrate with them in their successes. You mourn with them in their losses. You love them. You seek their best. And by showing them a Christ-like love, the Lord uses them to enrich your life in ways that you wouldn’t even imagine.—Chris

Like the others, Susan was in trouble too. Susan didn’t have the things she needed to be safe and healthy. A secure place to sleep at night, enough food to eat, and basic school supplies. A place where she is secure and under the watchful eye of someone who cares for her. We’ve all seen similar situations and not known how to help. Thankfully, French Camp Academy has a strong track record of success. A Christ-centered home and school, FCA exists to serve young people and families for the glory of God. We offer a safe, stable home where young people of all kinds can learn and live. Though their backgrounds are diverse, all our students trust French Camp Academy to empower them to thrive emotionally, come alive spiritually, stretch academically, grow physically, and mature socially. The academic program prepares young people for college, trade school, military service, or entry-level jobs. FCA and the Choctaw County School system work together to provide vocational-technical education. Juniors and seniors are paired with a trained adult life coach to work with them to have their next steps planned. Students live in a home with other young people and a set of godly houseparents who live out Christian values and teach by example. The FCA academic program prepares them for their next step in life. FCA has a student work program designed to teach basic life skills and opens the door to a variety of skill training. Perhaps you know a young person who needs a place like French Camp Academy? Churches are on the front lines in this fight for our young people and FCA can offer an opportunity for young people to step out of the cycle of violence, abuse, and neglect. If you know of a young person that needs the opportunity to reset and refocus, please share our contact information. We can provide a stable, safe environment for them to redefine their future just as we have done with Kevin, Hannah, and Susan. v

FCA Announces Link Year Program “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature. And in favor with God and man”—Luke 2:52. Just as Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, FCA works hard for all its students to thrive. We recognize that some students would benefit from intense training after high school graduation that deliberately provides all the links to a chain leading to a successful life.

Who is a candidate for Link Year? Graduating seniors who would like to • Grow in their relationship with Christ • Develop work skills • Gain an understanding of adult decisions like finances, insurance, purchasing a home or car, or career path.

The FCA Link Year program offers graduates of FCA hands-on life experience while working on its campus. This opportunity will expand self-discipline and develop positive habits to transition to independence. Link Year participants will be leading current FCA students and serving as role models to younger students on campus. Adult mentors will guide Link Year participants to foster responsibility and prepare them for their future while they serve in various roles on campus and take college courses for credit. Students must have a desire for a deeper relationship with Christ. While working with a spiritual mentor privately, students will also lead or attend one Bible Study group or Sunday School weekly.

Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.— Philippians 2:14-15

The Cornerstone Community Can Work for You and FCA in 2021 You are providing consistent funding that can go to work immediately for children in their time of need when you join our monthly giving program. Cornerstone Community members are a special group because their gifts are continuous and steady. • Your monthly gift is automatically applied to your credit card or bank account. You can adjust the amount at any time. • You will receive a tax receipt for your cumulative annual contribution at the end of each fiscal year. • Sign up online to join the Cornerstone Community as a monthly donor. • Call 662-547-6484 for more information or go to frenchcamp.org to set up a monthly giving plan. Help young people all year by making a monthly gift and help us start the New Year strong! v

The program’s goal is to move students toward a vocation, college, or the military, and be able to manage finances, make informed decisions, and grow in their relationship with Christ so they can discern the will of God in their lives moving forward. v

A Tip to Handle the Circumstances of the Day BREATHE! Take time throughout the day to rest your thoughts and reset your mind to a Kingdom focus. This is not our home—we are passing through and we must choose to enjoy the journey, despite the circumstances around us. Many situations are out of our control, but we can control our thoughts and our emotions. Be aware of what you are thinking. Combat fear and anxiety with the TRUTH of God’s Word. Take every thought captive and remember to Whom you belong. God is on His throne and is still faithful to His children in accomplishing His plan and revealing His glory. Rest in that truth! Read Psalm 37 every day! Karen Cates oversees the FCA Counseling Center coordinating other licensed professional counselors to meet the emotional needs of our children and teenagers. v

A Life of Grateful Praise

James and Barbara Lipscomb gave their time, talents, and energy enjoying and building God’s kingdom. James, a student of theology, classmate of Francis Schaeffer, pastor, church planter, and Greek instructor understood the value of investing in people. Barbara, an avid gardener, bird watcher, rockhound, player of word games, and canner of pickles, beans, beets, and tomatoes, understood hospitality. James and Barbara welcomed people into their home to share, teach, and invest their lives into others. Perhaps that is why they included French Camp Academy in their estate planning. In the 1990’s, James and Barbara reached out to French Camp to secure a charitable gift annuity. For years they both enjoyed quarterly payments knowing that at the end of their lives the rest would go to French Camp. But they did not stop there! Before James and Barbara both passed away, they made sure that French Camp would be receiving an additional gift from the remainder of their estate. What a blessing! One of their favorite hymns was, “For the Beauty of the Earth.” The last stanza captures their life for Christ and the value of giving your all in grateful praise: Please call Lance at (662) 547-6482 to let us

Fort Worth Mission Trip For the twelfth year in a row, FCA sent a team to minister to the homeless with Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas. While our team was small, its impact was great, and the Lord allowed us to be used to encourage people. Our team was winsome and well prepared to show the love of Christ. We led worship every day using skits, puppets, music, testimonies, and interpretive dances we had prepared. We also organized a clothing distribution and led a carpentry project. The Lord used Faith Lawson (who is part of FCA’s maintenance team) to solve a water problem to the building where we were staying. We were able to pray with an older gentleman who gave his life to Christ. A Christian lady struggling with depression was encouraged through one of the services. We thank God for safe travel, good health, the privilege of serving, and for the Kingdom resources given. Team members included: Katie Grace Browning, Cray Cairncross, Grace Ann Wade, Anna Young Withers, Carrie Browning, Tim and Leslie Comings, Faith Lawson, Brian McGlothin, and Christy Wade. v

For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.—2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

Carolyn Akers, Her Story as a House Parent My name is Carolyn Akers and I have been at French Camp Academy for 30 years as a house parent for girls. I had over 300 girls live in my home during this time.

Tell us about your experience with all those girls. It was busy. It was overwhelming. It was intense, but very rewarding. Similar to foster parenting, you would come in and just love them where they were, talk to them, take care of them, listen to them, and just do what families do: hang out together, make sure they do their homework, all those day-to-day things that you take care of. It is important for them to know how to view their lives through a Christian world-view and have people come alongside and support them in their hard times.

Why does the world need a place like French Camp? In an ideal world, in an ideal situation, we would not need French Camp, but the world isn’t perfect. And so sometimes we need some support. Parents need support, so we come alongside to help, not to take them away from their families, but to work with them and for them to be reunited with their families. French Camp is a place for change. Because we work with young people, we have a heart for young people. We hear God’s call and passion to share His heart with them. So, we love them as He loves us. Jesus is the cycle breaker. He is a life changer and that’s who we try to lead them to—the Life Changer.

Quotes from House Parents at French Camp Academy FCA house parents are called to share the transforming message of Jesus Christ in life-on-life ministry. What is the best thing about being a House Parent? The best thing about being a house parent is the relationships that you make that will last a lifetime. And the funny thing is, God will put people you would have never chosen to be the ones that mean the most. Why should someone join us as house parents at FCA? I think the only logical answer to this question is, “Because God has called you to do it”. And it’s different than being called to ministry. You are being called to share your home, to share your heart, and to share your family with people you wouldn’t necessarily want to share them with. What has been the biggest surprise of your time house parenting? The thing that surprises me most about house parenting is that I bring absolutely nothing to the table. It’s all God, all the time. In all the difficulties of house parenting, what has been your delight? When things get tough and you think you failed, God sends you someone to remind you why you do this job. Young people who have said they hated you or hated God come back and tell you about the seed you planted and how much of a difference you made in their life. v
