W-O-R-K-I-N-G it out at French Camp Academy For many “W-O-R-K” is not a word to be embraced. Some do anything they can to avoid it. Others go to other extremes and exhaust themselves to enjoy the better things in life. Others, out of necessity and circumstances, work several jobs just to put food on the table. It can produce life-altering stress and physical issues. Work wasn’t meant to be a chore in the beginning. You know the story. God gave Adam and Eve some land. The soil was perfect! The fruit from their labor was satisfying. Work was good, and life had meaning! And then it happened! Sin entered the workplace. Weeds shot up. Life got complicated quickly. Genesis 3:17-18…after the First Couple took a bite from the forbidden fruit, God told them some really bad news. In short, He said the ground is cursed because of you. And all your life you will struggle to make a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you. Ouch! Work today isn’t what God planned for us, is it? But God gives LOTS of grace and wants us to have a proper perspective of work. Most young people living at FCA come out of a culture demanding us to make bucket piles of money fast. And the message is clear: YOU come first. Look out for number ONE. French Camp strives to teach a different model of viewing work, because we believe a perspective shaped by God’s Word can transform a life and generations to follow. • Every afternoon after school Monday–Friday and Saturday mornings young people 7th –12th grades are assigned to work coordinators. If you visit our campus during those hours throughout the week, you will notice young people accomplishing and learning different tasks. Photography, weed eating, retail, writing thank you notes to FCA supporters, cleaning offices, answering telephones, operating a back-hoe, and a host of other activities provide opportunities for adults to teach young people life skills and develop habits of working every day. • As FCA students enter their Junior year of their academic program, French Camp’s Life Coaching program kicks into high gear. Students learn about their unique God-given strengths, their passions in life, natural abilities, personality characteristics, and life experiences. Monthly mentoring meetings and classroom instructions help students shape a life purpose catapulting them into the future by laying out a track they can run on for life after high school. Sound biblical teaching supports all of our work we do with young people ensuring that a Christ-focused world view shapes their lives. The work program at FCA is designed to point our students into career paths, teach them a Christian work ethic, develop skills and enhance talents, and ultimately serve others as they follow their God-given calling in life. v

The President’s Perspective: Be Careful What You Ask For! Each school year at French Camp, we choose a theme. I think it is appropriate for where the Lord has led This year’s theme is “To God Alone Be the Glory.” us today—“God will not During the course of this year we have experienced call you to something you some of the deepest losses and heartaches in my twenty can do. August 4, 2003 With all of these and the ordinary pressures of life, it is This quote brings me to the point of this article. What easy for us to ask questions like: God, why are You doing I see God doing in our lives and in the life of French this? Why are You allowing these things to happen? What Camp is placing us in a position of need and poverty. are You up to through all this pain and turmoil? We are unable to do anything in our own strength. He has brought us literally to our knees emotionally. He is We find ourselves faced with circumstances outside of bringing Glory to Himself and this is not our doing; it is our control, and it is not a good feeling. His doing. He is showing us that He alone is sufficient for each and every need we have whether it be emotional, physical, or spiritual. He is the Alpha and the Omega, His greater plan, for our greater good The Bible tells us that “His ways are not our ways.” the beginning and the end. The events of this year are not the way we would have planned them. We like order and linear planning with the least amount of pain possible. What we are realizing in the midst of this painful, uncertain place, is that God appears to be peeling back the layers of our self-sufficiency, the aptitude of our intelligence, the strength of our resolve, in order to reveal our desperate need of Him. God is showing us that we cannot do it without Him, and thankfully we can see His grace, mercy, and sustaining power even during this pain. The Bible tells us that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Refining us and refining French Camp Academy Even in the midst of such pain and tragedy we find French Camp in a better place than it has been. We provide a life coaching program that directly invests in one on one relationships with staff and students, an intentional world and life view is taught and modeled throughout our campus, strong academics, and we are blessed with dedicated people. We are thankful to many of you for French Camp’s fiscal soundness. Even then, all of these good things can only go so far. God has taken us to a place of wonderment and need—corporately and for many of us personally. He has taken us to the end of ourselves and as hard as it is to admit, this is the best possible place we can ever be—fully dependent upon Him. My first year as President, Al Chestnut, a Jackson friend, was invited to share as a part of our beginning of the year staff training. During this time he shared a quote (not his), that has continued to stick with me, and
God is accomplishing our mission and our theme Yes, back in August we had all of the best intentions when we selected the theme—“To God Alone Be the Glory” and we had in mind to do amazing things this year for all of our students and constituents in the name of Christ. Little did we know that God would show Himself in such a powerful way and teach us that He uses broken, earthen vessels to accomplish His work. God is being glorified at French Camp in a way we would have never expected, a way we could never have planned, a way we could never do. How about your life? What situation, circumstance, relationship troubles are you facing today? Is your strength failing as you continue to face those trials on your own, day after day? I have good news for you. God loves you! Take a breath and hear me; God loves you! He wants to come alongside you in whatever situation you may find yourself in. Maybe you need to wave the white flag as we have done and say to God, we cannot do this on our own—we need You, God. He wants you to know Him and the peace that comes from a personal relationship with Him. Ask Him for help today. He is ready and waiting. To God Alone Be the Glory! Would you continue to uphold us in prayer?

Start Them Early, Wally and Reni Bumpas (Moriah House Parents) It might be surprising that laziness is such a big theme in the book of Proverbs (the “sluggard”) until we remember our own natural tendency toward this life-wrecking vice. Why else would the Bible’s manual on wisdom have so much to say about it? At French Camp we see work as a vital part of a rounded education that engages the whole person. Not just diligence in school work, but also experience in hands-on manual labor. Every student, beginning in 7th grade, is assigned to a “work crew” for 10-12 hours per week, after school and Saturday mornings. What about the elementary age students at French Camp? At Moriah home, which currently houses 8 boys who attend French Camp Elementary School across the street from our campus, the boys are required to clean their rooms each morning, which includes making their beds, emptying their trash, cleaning floors, and making sure their closets and desks are neat and orderly. In addition, there are chores for each boy as we clean the house thoroughly each Saturday morning.

Continue to pray as current students, the Naik family back home in India, and the Coudriet family in Tennessee grieve this loss. We will always love them and remember the impact they made in God’s Kingdom. And we long for the Day of Christ when we see them again. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 Some have approached FCA staff expressing interest in starting an endowment fund to help sponsor international Christian students who have a need for scholarship aid. In response to that request, and if your family feels led to participate in this specific endowment interest, please send a gift to French Camp Academy earmarked for the International Students for Christ Fund. Distributions will be reserved for international students coming to FCA with a desire to impact the world for Christ. v

#22 Senior Madison Klein recently scored her career 1,000th point as a member of the FCA Lady Panther Basketball team. Many of her classmates helped celebrate this milestone with custom t-shirts. Way to go Madison! Congratulations to Holman Edwards for signing with East Central Mississippi Community College and Bradley McGlothlin for signing with Mississippi College. Both young men have proven what a work ethic can accomplish on the football field and will be competing on a college level.
Celebrating Senior Night for our basketball players and managers. Congratulations!
With the expectation of snow one night in January a challenge was issued to see which student-home could make the best snowman. Well, not much snow fell that night, but we did have a winner. Moriah Home won the Snowman Contest. Congratulations Moriah!!! A Pizza Party was the prize.
It was great to welcome Keith Gibson, Chief Meteorologist at WCBI News, as the special guest speaker for 8th grade science classes at FCA!

New Front Teeth for Christmas? Every year when the Christmas songs begin playing and Zach Gilmer hears the song, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth,â€? he’ll have a much bigger smile. New front teeth are exactly what Zach received as a wonderful gift from Dr. Troy Kerber in Dyersburg, TN. After losing his grip in a tree stand earlier in 2018, Zach lost four of his front teeth, not a pleasant experience for anyone, especially a 17-year-old teenage boy. But Zach has a good Dr. George Murray, former chansense of humor and is loved by all of us at cellor of Columbia International French Camp Academy. Urbana Mission Conference Urbana brings together thousands (10,000) of high school seniors, college and graduate students, teachers, pastors, and other ministry leaders to think and consider Christ’s call in their lives for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During this 5-day experience at St. Louis, participants enjoy Bible exposition, worship, seminars, testimonies, and prayer. In December of 2018, a group from French Camp Academy attended including: Jenni Morgan (Class of 1985), Jocelyn Drew (Class of 2019), Abi Holman (Class of 2017), Katee Anne Morgan (Class of 2016), Ami Sherif (Class of 2019), Bangali Sillah (Class of 2011), Georgia Upshaw (Class of 2017), and Emma Wheeler (our Arkansas friend who has worked at Camp of the Rising Son). v
The Work of Evangelism… in Mexico!
For many years French Camp Academy students and staff have had the privilege of ministering with Pastor David Huerta in Acuna, Mexico. One of the core objectives for this trip is for FCA students to be trained to share the Gospel using various types of methodology ranging from puppet ministry, visiting orphanages, and sharing student testimonies. Months of preparation are involved including weekly meetings to learn gospel presentation skills, formulating and rehearsing personal testimonies, leading worship and Bible studies, memorizing Scripture, and lots of prayer. As you can imagine, much work goes into coming alongside a church in another country to help build and minister to its local families. Work comes in many shapes and forms at French Camp Academy. The “work of evangelism” is certainly one of them as FCA young people prepare to experience another culture, share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and allow themselves to be used by God to build-up another local church. v

Life Coaching at FCA In August of 2017 FCA launched a new program called Life Coaching. We just paired the junior class with their assigned Life Coaches. Trained FCA adults are paired with rising seniors who invest time and energy to help students develop a “life-plan” for post high school. Approximately 894 life coach hours were logged in 2018! Many young people coming out of broken family situations need an extra measure of grace and guidance to help build a future plan for their life. If mentoring by loving, wise adults doesn’t occur, then often teenagers move through early adulthood floundering with very little direction. Staff were trained in the summer of 2017 with new tools needed to walk students down a career path. The program was launched in August with our senior class. Life Coaching at FCA teaches students how to design a resume’ of experiences, learn more about their unique personality traits, develop a “life purpose statement,” shadow adults at work, and much more. In an effort to keep you informed about the work of French Camp Academy, we thought our readers and prayer warriors might want to see a few of the “life mission statements” developed over the past year or so. Here’s a sampling:
• "I will strive to become a leader and a shining light for Christ to all those I come in contact with and to show them what Christ has done for me and His never ending love for every one of us." • "Through organization and efficiency, I strive to glorify God in teaching and encouraging young people, while also using my gift of leadership and administration to help others excel." • "My life purpose: help others and be encouraging." • "My life purpose is to use my faith and abilities to help bring people to the love and glory of God." • "My purpose is to give glory to God by caring and nursing people through being a nurse." We are pleased to announce Becky Lawson as the new Life Coaching Coordinator for the 2019-20 school year. Becky currently serves as FCA Librarian and has been part of our program for 22 years. Becky said, “The Life Coach Program is the culmination of education received at FCA, the ‘so what’ to what has been poured into the student from every aspect. The goal of our instruction is that a student embrace the Savior and leave FCA with life purpose, vision, and the skills necessary to make his unique difference for the Kingdom.” As you think about the young people at French Camp Academy, please pray for the Life Coaching program. Pray that God will use these vital relationships to provide the God-given guidance and resources needed for our young people to make the right choices moving forward in life. v
French Camp Academy admits students of any race, color, national, or ethnic origin.

When I came to French Camp as a young boy, I did not know much about the value of hard work. During my time at French Camp, I learned the value of work from many great mentors who were self-sacrificing, humble, and truly investing in my personal growth.
When was the last time you saw your friends? Make plans to attend and share in the laughter, food, and fellowship. For more information - contact Jamie Senyard at
French Camp’s work program taught me that with hard work and honesty, you can succeed—and that there is no greater satisfaction than knowing you have finished a task to the best of your ability and to God’s Glory. The skills and character I built at
