House Parents—Supporting their Success The special calling to lead young people in a residential setting is crucial to the success of French Camp’s work among children and teenagers. House parents from all around the country have come to One Fine Place to pour their hearts, minds, and strength into the dear ones under their care. Please make a point to undergird their efforts with your daily prayers. Pass this paper to key people in your church to pray monthly or at prayer meetings. Praying regularly for French Camp house parents is key to their success changing the path of young lives.

The President’s Perspective: Privileged Attention Do you ever find yourself in a dizzying swirl of thought and activity? Sometimes I feel like I am riding a bucking bronco with so many things to do, so many directions to go, and so many things that compete for my thoughts and attention. It can be chaotic! We live in a fast paced world with the “advancement” of technology and communication and it often seems like we never get a break. C.S. Lewis*, a British philosopher and theologian, had this to say about God’s attentions: God has infinite attention, infinite leisure to spare for each one of us. He doesn’t have to take us in the line. You’re as much alone with Him as if you were the only thing He ever created. As I think about this statement, it brings a great reminder and joy to my soul. While my life is sometimes busy and feeling a little out of control, God never is! He always has time to spend with me, and I do not need to make an appointment, or wait in line. While I am with Him, he is not easily distracted by his watch or phone. His attentions are infinite and He is ready and willing to spend time with me. In the Bible, David wrote of God’s great attention to him during a time of distress. I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because He inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live. David had been in a very tight place running for his life! How about you? Would you like to have someone who gives you their full attention night or day, no matter what the circumstances? The call never goes to voicemail and no appointment is needed. God stands ready to receive us, not on our own merit, but based on the merit of His unconditional love found in the sacrificial gift of His son Jesus. Is your heart heavy today? Why not call out to God and ask him to help you in your time of need? No appointment necessary. *C.S. Lewis is perhaps best known for his work,The Chronicles of Narnia, which has sold over 100 million copies and has been transformed into three major motion pictures.

Russ and Carolyn Akers Honored as Staff Members of the Year 2018 Staff Members of the Year Russ and Carolyn Akers have quietly served as houseparents in Buchanan Home for 28 years and counting! With a strong testimony to God’s goodness, they are wonderful role models of what a family should be. They joyfully live out lives of obedience in submitting to human authority as unto the Lord. Russ and Carolyn have been married for 44 years and are parents to two daughters (Somer, FCA Class of 1999 and Amber, FCA Class of 2004) and grandparents to Nevaeh, Arista, Dominic, Joe Luke, Autumn, Taylor, and Bryant. They have also been houseparents and positive role models to hundreds of young ladies over the years. Many of their girls still consider them as parents whom they seek counsel and encouragement from in their adult lives. Russ graduated from Wesley College with a degree in Pastoral and Biblical Studies. During his time with FCA, Russ has worked in Maintenance and the Horse Program where he rebuilt two horse barns. He is a volunteer with the French Camp fire department and Emergency Medical 1st Responder and pastors Marvin Hill Methodist Church in Cumberland, MS. Russ is a gifted singer and enjoys using his talent in school plays. He spends his evenings teasing the Buchanan girls. Carolyn graduated from Nazarene Bible College with a degree in Christian Education. While ministering as the primary houseparent in Buchanan Home, Carolyn teaches Sunday School and helps with girl’s Bible Study. Additionally, she formerly taught Christian Family Living for several years. A gifted actress, Carolyn performed in all school plays and is known for her one-person drama—The Ragman!
During their rare free time, the Akers enjoy reading, camping and canoeing, watching sunsets and spending time with their children and grandchildren. They continue to serve the Lord with joy in Russ’ battle with Parkinson’s disease. Their longevity in the Buchanan Home is amazing and they continue to give God all the glory. v
Not to us, LORD, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Psalm 115:1 Psalm 115:1 has been selected as the pivotal scripture for the 2018-19 FCA Team. During Faculty and Staff Orientation in August, mornings were spent worshiping and studying God’s Word together and committing all the glory the Lord will bring to French Camp Academy back to Him. To God be All the Glory! v
Board Member: Lee Lampton Lee Lampton has served on the FCA Board of Trustees since December 2004. Being on the Student Life, and Audit and Investment Committees give him a broad view of FCA’s ministry. Lee currently serves as a Board member to Ergon, Inc., a Jackson based corporation. Lee received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Mississippi College. His wife, Maggi, and he are members of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Jackson. They have two children, Amy and Lee, Jr. We are very blessed and thankful for Lee’s longstanding commitment to serving FCA and its young people. v

Thomas Henry Bowen Jr. Small Effort. March 31, 1930 – June 25, 2018 For over 17 years Thomas (Tom) Henry Bowen, 88, a longtime resident of Jackson, served faithfully the ministry of French Camp Academy. Tom died peacefully at The Baptist Hospital in Jackson on June 25, 2018.
One of the easiest ways to leave a gift to French Camp Academy in your estate— without rewriting your will—is by naming our ministry a final beneficiary of your IRA/retirement account or life-insurance policy. Transfer-on-death (TOD) or payable-on-death (POD) forms are a way of designating beneficiaries to receive your assets automatically at the time of your death without having to go through probate court. They also allow you to specify the percentage of assets each person or entity will receive.
A retired Mississippi Valley Gas Executive, retired Colonel in the Mississippi Air National Guard, former President of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy in Port Gibson, Mississippi, Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Mississippi, French Camp Academy Trustee and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, his hospitable demeanor and servant’s heart will truly be missed.
Simply contact the administrator of your IRA or life-insurTom loved people and people loved him. He never met a stranger. He had a ance account and request a change of beneficiary form. To fill compassionate heart for children and youth in need and spent his retirement years out the form accurately, you may need the following informaserving as President of Chamberlain-Hunt Academy from 1998 until 2000 and tion. from that point forward as a board member to both FCA and CHA. Tom faithfully served on French Camp Academy’s Plant and Property Board Committee Legal Name: French Camp Academy and gave invaluable insight as a member of the Board’s Executive Committee. Federal Tax ID: 640321520 Mailing Address: Development Department, One Fine French Camp Academy is grateful for Tom’s leadership, his example of ChrisPlace, French Camp, MS 39745 tian service, his love for Mississippi, and devotion to the Lord. v If you have questions about making a gift through a beneficiary designation, please contact Lance Ragsdale at You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full firstname.lastname@example.org or 662-547-6482. v of gladness with your presence. Gratitude Changes Everything When new staff member Karen Leach learned part of her duties would be supervising a daily work crew she was nervous. “I didn’t know what to expect but I knew I wanted to connect with the girls and help them connect with the Lord,” she says. Karen came up with the idea to create each girl a gratitude journal. Each day when the students arrive at the Welcome Center, Karen greets them with a short devotional and time to write down the things they are grateful for that day. It’s become a great opportunity for the girls on Karen’s crew to refocus and move into their afternoon activities with an appreciative attitude and smiles on their faces.

5 Nights of Prayer Would you make time to pray for us in October? The first 5 nights in October we are encouraging our ministry partners to stand with us in fervent prayer for the following: Night One:
FCA students have multiple needs based on life situations. Pray for perseverance as they each address challenges, reach for new life goals, and take guided steps that will change the trajectory of their lives.
Pray for FCA House parents who work daily with the ones in their care. Eleven sets of parents from all around the country are called to meet the emotional, physical, social, and spiritual needs of young people.
FCA Family Ministry kicked-off last year by providing life-changing retreats, counseling, and resources for families of our young people. Pray that God would use this targeted ministry to re-adjust marriages and families.
The FCA Life Coaching program pairs staff with students looking to start the next phase of their lives. These students need career direction, a clear understanding of their gifts and abilities, and someone to walk through goals to get them across the finish line and set-up for the next phase of their lives. Pray for over 60 adults who are serving as Life Coaches and the senior students being mentored by them.
Counseling plays a major role in our program to children and teenagers. Some need a little, others need a lot, and a few none at all. Pray that our counselors will have discernment and godly wisdom as they lead our youngsters through the bumps and bruises of their lives and allow healing to begin.

I would like to give more but I need income security. Many people want to help French Camp Academy but hesitate because of concern for their future. Financial security can be received through a charitable gift annuity, a written agreement by which an individual or couple makes a gift to French Camp Academy and in return receives a guaranteed income for life. Many have enjoyed the benefits of this commonly used giving tool. The rate of interest on a charitable gift annuity is based on a person’s age. An individual usually receives a higher rate than a couple. Also, the older the annuitant, the higher the interest rate. Charitable gift annuities have tax advantages. For instance, a portion of the interest income received is tax-free. The annuitant will also receive an income tax charitable deduction the year the gift is given. If the annuity is purchased with an appreciated asset there is a partial saving on the capital gains tax.

FCA Delights in Missions John Piper once said, "Missions is the overflow of our delight in God because missions is the overflow of God's delight in being God." This statement resonates here at FCA as we hunger for opportunities to serve on the mission field. This summer seven youth and three adults traveled to Wales encouraging local churches, hosting Holiday Bible Club for neighborhood children, and leading Bible studies with Welsh youth. Please pray for French Camp Academy as it works deliberately to be a place of comfort and encouragement teaching a true delight in God.
But he said to him, “I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives.” Numbers 10:30

French Camp Academy Alumni News
French Camp Academy is blessed to have an amazing faculty and staff pouring their talents and energies into building young lives for the glory of God. Our staff comes from near and far, and there are a significant number that are simply returning home. As author Simon Sinek wrote, “When we work hard on something we believe in, it’s called passion. When we work hard on something we don’t believe in, it’s called stress.” That alumni passion is a tremendous asset to the students of FCA. They have been in their shoes, sat in their classes, eaten in the dining hall, and cheered in the same stands. There is a unique opportunity for them to connect to students. They understand. Priscilla Anderson, FCA girls’ basketball coach said, “I am proud to be back working at FCA. I had the pleasure to come in and replace my high school coach *Martha Ward. I spent 12 years away from French Camp and I NEVER wanted to be back here, but God had other plans for my life. I learned so much from Coach Ward and my other teachers as a student here. It’s an awesome opportunity to work alongside them. As an FCA student, I met so many different people from different places. FCA truly is a microcosm of society— meaning that the diversity that is here is a small sample of what it’s like in the world today. Being at FCA taught me how to interact with all kinds of people with different needs and backgrounds. I hope to be able to teach this generation how to love and respect all people, regardless of their background, color, religion (or lack thereof ), or special needs. Each person is made in Christ’s image and we should treat them as such.” Every student who has walked across the graduation stage has been taught life lessons throughout their time here from a variety of influential faculty and staff members. In fact, the Class of 2018 listed over 60 staff members who had been a major influence in their lives. FCA Alumni who return to work here feel a responsibility to pass on those life lessons to the next generation of students. One recent graduate stated, “Regardless of whether they are a Bible teacher or not, every teacher displays the love of Jesus to their students. French Camp truly feels like home to me, and I have become part of the family”. v *Coach Martha Ward passed away in January of 2018 after a long battle with cancer.
