CommuniquĂŠ Annual Report 2017-2018

From The Head Dear Families, Our school community is home not just for our students, but also for our families, faculty, and staff. At French American and International, we are united by our belief in our mission—in academic rigor and diversity, in critical thinking and cross-cultural communication— and by our commitment to the values of respect, integrity, inclusion, collaboration, and curiosity. I am so thankful for your engagement and giving, which ensure our support of our people and the excellence of our programs as we educate citizens of the world. You may not realize how many gifts you give to our school. The gift of your children is first among them: our students are at the heart of our school, and all our efforts are in service to them. The gift of your engagement—whether you chaperone a class trip, join other parents at our Principal Coffees, or work on the Auction or other events—is invaluable and enriches our community. And the gift of your financial support strengthens every aspect of our students’ experience. Like all independent schools, we rely on our families’ philanthropic support, and we could not operate without the generosity of our alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. Giving to our school supports people—students and teachers—and the programs that serve them. Your generosity supports teacher salaries and benefits; financial aid to families; programs like arts, athletics, local and global travel; and professional learning for our faculty. Robust annual giving is essential to the health of our school. The Communiqué is an acknowledgment of the gifts of financial support that our families and friends have made this past year, and it is a testament to the financial health of our school. As we enact our strategic plan and ensure the future of our school for every student in every grade, your giving takes on added importance. I hope that you will join me in celebrating these wonderful gifts and the record-breaking year of giving that you have helped us achieve. Warmly,

Melinda Bihn, Ed.D. Head of School

Cordiales salutations,

Melinda Bihn, Ed.D. Proviseur

Treasurer’s Letter The 2017-2018 school year was by all measurements an extremely successful year for our community. As many of you know, we are actively pursuing the potential entitlement and development of our property at 98 Franklin Street. If successful, this will open up a world of possibilities for enriching the student experience on campus, which is a key component of our schoolwide strategic plan. Continued strong enrollment and successful community fundraising events enabled us to have a record year for our development efforts, raising nearly $1.9 million in annual support. With an evercompetitive landscape for schools in the city, it is imperative that we plan for the future and offer our students a state-of-the-art learning experience. Due to our strong finances, we were also able to accomplish improvements during the summer at 150 Oak Street. Many of you may have noticed the new play structure in the Oak Yard, additional polished flooring throughout, and the window opening in the second

floor lobby, which allows natural light to enter from the Oak Street lobby. Another year of impressive college admissions further reinforces the quality of the education at French American and International. The bilingual and international curriculum has proven to be sought after by the world’s top universities and colleges in an evercompetitive college admissions landscape. Our faculty is of course primarily responsible for the success of our students and the quality of our faculty is reflected in our college admissions results. We cannot thank them enough for the fantastic job they do and their dedication to our students. I personally cannot thank you enough for your support and generosity towards our school community. You are the pillars of our institution and with your generosity we are building a school of which we can all be proud. I hope that you share my enthusiasm for our school and I look forward to an even more exciting and successful school year in 2018-2019.

Stephane de Bord

Treasurer, Board of Trustees

"There are ways to support French American and International that are much more advantageous than gifts of cash for both the school and parents. Donating appreciated stock can save families capital gains taxes, and can provide a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift—and French American and International pays no capital gains taxes on the stock. It’s a win/win and a simple move that many here in the Bay Area can take advantage of… even yearly."

The Communiqué is produced to inform the

2017-2018

Annual Fund Gifts Received July 1, 2017 Through June 30, 2018

French American and International community about philanthropic activities and school accomplishments. This edition of the Communiqué includes donor lists for the last full fiscal year (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018). Great care has been taken in preparing this report to make it as accurate as possible. If you should note an inaccuracy, please contact the Advancement Office at advancement@frenchamericansf. org so that we may correct our records. French American International School is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

We are excited to share that our 2017-2018 Annual Fund was the most successful campaign we’ve ever had, raising over $1.3 million for our school community. The Annual Fund is French American and International’s single largest fundraising initiative, supported by donors from every constituency. We are extraordinarily grateful to our current families for their generosity and commitment to the Annual Fund and to the many alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff who believe in the impact their contributions have on our school. The Annual Fund supports many aspects of the school but, at its heart, it allows us to continually invest in our programs, teachers and, most important, our students.

Thank you! "The Annual Fund is crucial in providing for the 33% of families who receive financial aid, and I think that goes a long way in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment for our children."

"Giving to the school annually is a top priority for our family. Taking advantage of the matching gifts program at work is equally as important.  We can double or triple the funds donated to the school by filling out a simple form. The Bay Area is fortunate enough to have many employers that match charitable gifts, which is a huge benefit to our children at French American and International."
