HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS by Sue Cannon

The 2012 holidays are coming right up and first on our plates (excuse the pun) is Thanksgiving. It’s time now to plan the menu, bake the pies, and check the football schedule! Time, also, to let the seasonal fun begin. There are a number of events already in full swing that will set the mood for the jam-packed six weeks ahead - special shows, museum exhibits, wine tours and more. Use this column throughout the entire season to stay on top of all the holiday fun. And, if you’re one of those early birds who plan to get ahead on the holiday shopping, check our “Gift Guide” on page 24 as well as the “Shopping with Spirit” section on page 20 for ideas. •Thru November 17: The Fielding Nextstage at Geva Theatre Center, 75 Woodbury Blvd., hosts the seasonal show, Sister’s Christmas Catechism, The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold. SCREEN

LINCOLN

Written by Tony Kushner; directed by Steven Spielberg Touchstone Pictures   Rated PG-13 By Ed Symkus The making of, and especially the release schedule of, Steven Spielberg’s peek into the homeand work life of Abe Lincoln as the Civil War was drawing to a close couldn’t be any more timely. With a certain contemporary and contentious political event now part of history, Spielberg’s Lincoln presents a kind of been there-done that scenario. It begins in January, 1865, as the war was entering its fourth year, and Lincoln was about to start his second term as president. The film’s first sights are of a brutal battle – of combat fought with guns and swords and bayonets and fists … literally hand to hand. But at battle’s end, there’s an eerie calmness, as President Lincoln arrives to sit and chat with his Union soldiers. Now, those of you who paid attention in your seventh grade history class will know that Lincoln had a lot more on his hands that just the horrific War Between the States. This was also the time of the Emancipation Proclamation, the slave question that would get right to the roots of the country’s

woes (Sorry, this is no place for a history lesson. Google it!). This was Lincoln’s baby (along with his hopes of ending the war). It was the Obamacare of the day. Oh, it had already passed in the Senate, but the House was, well, it was as divided then as it is now. Based on the Doris Kearns Goodwin book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and sparklingly adapted by playwright Tony Kushner, it becomes a look at the back-biting, pandering, and political shenanigans going on behind closed doors as well as in Congressional sessions. One of the film’s few faults is that it expects viewers to have more than a passing knowledge of our country’s history in those tumultuous times. So even if you do know what the Emancipation Proclamation was, it wouldn’t hurt to brush up on a couple of key players, such as William Seward (David Strathairn) and Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones). This is not in any way a bio-pic. It covers only four months in Lincoln’s life, but it sure gives us insight into what made him tick. And it will no doubt earn Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar nomination. His Lincoln is a big, lumbering figure, carrying both an aura of peace and a world of worry on his face. He sometimes even has a

•••••••••••••••••••••

twinkle in his eye, most often just as he’s about to, as was his wont, tell a story, either to make a point or just for the pure pleasure it gave him. Like Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison, and Kurt Russell playing Elvis Presley before him, Day-Lewis completely inhabits the role. He looks and acts and sounds (his voice ranges from gravelly to sing-songy) exactly the way most folks imagine Lincoln would. It’s an assured, understated performance. Quick prediction: Among the multitude of probable Oscar nominations the film will accrue, another shoo-in is Tommy Lee Jones, sporting a bad wig, and spouting out some of the film’s richest and funniest dialogue. Yes, amidst all of the earnestness and “importance,” we’re also treated to a much-needed sense of humor in the smoke-filled, cluttered rooms of Congress, and heartbreaking sadness in the White House. Some people without patience may find the film a little too talky, while others will fret about the long pauses, during which both viewers and characters are waiting for someone, anyone, to say something important. One thing no one will have a problem with is Spielberg’s career-long interest in faces. He lets his cameras linger on them, challenging us to figure out what theyre thinking, or just letting us look at them in all of their big screen glory. And Lincoln is a film filled with fascinating faces.
