Introduction to China China is a vast country, a kaleidoscope of people, cultures, customs and landscapes. Although the present-day People’s Republic of China only dates back to 1949, records spanning 5000 years show that China has had a long economic and cultural history, with warring states unifying and dividing multiple times. However, throughout it’s turbulent history, this country has had periods of immense cultural learning, artistic creativity and religious and philosophical development. Importantly China also extensively expanded early trading routes, with the Han Dynasty (207BC – 220AD) first developing what would become the famous Silk Road trade route to India.

China’s culture is considered to be the oldest living culture in the world. Her rich history of trade, arts and culture, combined with the diversity of ethnic groups and their individual food and customs, makes China one of the most interesting places on earth to visit. Travelling through China you can re-live the history and understand how this immense country was born from small tribal states with their own languages and lives, evolved through centuries of upheaval, unification, then liberation in 1949 to become the People’s Republic of China

or those just stopping in China quickly, this short trip is an introduction to Beijing and the great wall. Visit must-see attractions such as Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, as well as a trip to the less-often visited part of the Great Wall at Mutianyu, including a picnic lunch atop the wall. If you have time, choose to visit the masterful Temple of Heaven or wander Beijing's Hutongs, or backstreets, for a taste of old China.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN BEIJING Welcome to China! Upon landing, you will be greeted at Beijing International airport and transferred to your chosen hotel. As this is an arrival day, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

late afternoon for free time and dinner (at own expense). The local guide can assist with meal recommendations. The transfer between Beijing and Mutianyu is approximately 90 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

DAY 2: BEIJING'S FREE & FORBIDDEN SPACES Tiananmen Square is one of the oldest and largest city squares in the world, first built in 1651 and large enough to fit 500,000 people into its over 100 acres of open space. Adjacent to the square is the world-famous Forbidden City — superbly elegant and in close to pristine condition. UNESCO declared the Forbidden City as the largest collection of ancient wooden structures in the world. Go on a journey back in time as you walk down its red-walled alleys, through its magnificent courtyards and intricate interiors, and along the serene moat that rings the city with green. The dirt dug out to build the moat was turned into an artificial hill, called Jingshan Park. The top of the park provides stunning views over the Forbidden City and Beijing, and a great look into the lives of locals who go to the park every day to socialise. We finish the day with welcome dinner (included) with your new travel friends.

DAY 4: DEPARTURE BEIJING Enjoy a free day for last minute shopping and departure preparation. An airport departure transfer is included. You can choose one of the following nonincluded optional activities. The Temple of Heaven, constructed in the early 15th Century, is a masterfully landscaped and designed structure that combines imperial Chinese décor with spiritual grandiosity. Spend the morning exploring its opulent, bright and colourful Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, where emperors would pray for healthy harvests. Then, take a relaxed stroll through Beijing’s historic hutongs. In these old neighbourhoods, traditional courtyard houses connected by narrow stone-paved alleyways have been transformed from residences to hubs of culture for visitors and locals alike. Enjoy traditional yet modernised gourmet snacks and cafes, relax on stone benches under willow trees, or search for handicrafts to take home as keepsakes. After lunch in an authentic hutong family home, ride a rickshaw to Houhai Lake. Later in the afternoon, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight.

DAY 3: A DAY TOUR TO THE GREAT WALL In the morning visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, which is the best-preserved and most scenic part of the wall. Built more than 2,300 years ago, the Mutianyu Great Wall’s pristine parapets line the ridges of soft, sloping hillsides with verdant forests covering every inch of land. Take it all in, along with a delicious picnic lunch, atop the wall’s highest watchtowers (included). Return to your hotel

ecause when you stop and look around this life is pretty amazing."

China NEED TO KNOW • China does not have pharmacies or chemists the same as Western countries have. Make sure you bring a supply of ALL medications you may require, including sunscreen and mosquito repellent. • Medical Insurance is essential for travelling to China. • Do not drink the water in China. Bottled water is always available and is the safest option. Always have a small packet of tissues and hand sanitiser in your bag as well. Toilets do not necessarily supply these. • China is a CASH based society. Make sure you have RMB (Yuan) as other currencies are not accepted. ATM’s are available in most large towns and the international banks such as HSBC will allow for international card withdrawals, but not necessarily in smaller more remote places. Overseas credit cards are not accepted in all locations. Make sure you inform your bank of where you are travelling before you leave, to avoid your card being cancelled mid-trip.

• You can haggle on the price in many places as it is encouraged. • Electrical plugs in China are the same as Australia and New Zealand. It is always easier to buy plug adaptors before you leave, with plug adaptors being difficult to find in some areas of China. There are plenty of apps to download to make your travels in China less stressful* Wechat – a texting and information sharing platform used by virtually all locals and expats Pleco - A Chinese translation tool to make communication hastle-free Metroman – An easy route-planner with accurate mapping & metro information with over 25 cities in China *There is no access to Google, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and other apps in China without a vpn. It is advisable to get a vpn if you wish to use any of these while on the road.

• There is no tipping in China. Respect and politeness is always appreciated. China Classics | 31
