On January 13th, 2012, the Costa Concordia ship partially sank after reaching a reef off the coast of Isola del Giglio, in Tuscany, Italy. On that night, more than 32 lives were lost. In this situation, the relevance of the lighthouse typology increases. They guide, warn, mark, alert, lighten and highlight dangerous coast areas, as well as, difficult passages and complex obstacles. In this scenario, the aim of the competition relied in the redefinition of a contemporary lighthouse. Moreover, the design had to become a tribute to the Costa Concordia disaster and highlight the vulnerable borders between the elements of Land and Sea, Sky and Ground, Light and Darkness. THE LIGHTHOUSE The basic idea on the contemporary lighthouse design relies in the optimization of its typology. The redesign is a result of the applicability of the technology and design advancements. As a result, the lighthouse is interpreted not as a shelter anymore, but as a single object capable of providing light.
MOVING RINGS the living cell extends along the ocean as if the light floats above the water. This gesture symbolically establishes a connection between land and ocean. The rings and net provide an experience through its physicality, where the unstable conditions of walking above the net is an attempt to reinterpret the same unstable experience lived by the crew members during a shipwreck.Formally, the dimensions of the rings are identical to the width of the smokestack. This is an attempt to engage visitors through a physical element that has the same scale as a significant characteristic of the ship.

POINT TOWER + MID-HIGHRISE
LOW-RISE PATHWAYS S I T E + EXTRUSION T O W N HOUSES
The Origami Tower incorporates residential, commercial and institutional uses - including a new Central Library for Ottawa. The library is housed in an iconic, folded form on the northeast corner of the site with a condo tower floating above it. The design of the mid-rise building, adjacent to the Library , is flexible enough to be used for residential or offices uses (in support of the library). A network of courtyards and passageways cuts through the site, with elevated walkway bridging between terraces above the retail plinth. Finally, a complex of townhouses sits above a retail space.
STRINGS TO IMAGINATION In Pinocchio’s fantasy land, the landscape is the puppet itself. Hidden under the grounds in the heart of Collodi Italy, the Pinocchio Children’s Library pathway is an imagination treasure hunt. In the consolidated landscape surrounded by hills, medieval buildings and the baroque villas, the new library takes its inspiration from the simple, yet iconic structural feature of a puppet to pay tribute to the classic Pinocchio fairy-tale. The program is arranged around an intervening polygon which includes the Paper Factory and the Greenhouses. After the demolition of the greenhouses, the Library complex is anchored in three major buildings: the newly rehabilitate Paper Factory followed by two excavated wood boxes. The program is planned to offer a Library as both an open and public space for the City of Collodi while nonetheless offering clearly distinguished controlled access spaces such as the auditorium and the new exhibition area. Guidance and wayfinding through the building is provided by features pulled from puppet-design. The iconic cross-shaped silhouettes spread across the site, reflected in both plan and ceiling design, lending a sense of the hand that guides the merry-footed dance of a puppet when visitors look to the sky. Five cross-shaped puppet frames represent the identity of the project. The first and largest is the welcoming area which direct the flow of visitor traffic towards the new enlargements, the library and the exhibition area. The remaining puppet frames are found in the second wood box right across the river. Working as atriums inside the Library, they breathe light and a sense of a playful guiding spirit into the space, offering features such as gardens, nets and ball pools for play. The Pinocchio’s Library site plan is set as a square geometry which encloses the new complex and links the two sides of the river. In Collodi, this new space for fantasy and creativity is built to inspire youth to turn back to reading and knowledge in a time when the digital age has changed the role of the Library, thus nurturing them towards imagination.

The designing process sought to create an itinerant structure able to float over the Amazon River, since its waterway covers the entire Amazon Rainforest territory. The Observatory program was divided in two floating bodies covering rooms for scientists, visitors and exhibition spaces. The structure named Balsa, is a common device in the transportation system of the river and has been also used as a key-element in the structure of a floating luxurious hotel in the river. The metallic skin which covers both volumes is a permanent criticism to the cage-like devices that capture and frame nature`s freedom. We created, instead, a place where the humans are put inside the cage and observe the nature from inside out, as the Observatory floats along the Amazonian River.
