It's been trickling out in the news: International thieves have been siphoning millions of dollars out of bank accounts all over the world using methods that haven't been seen before. What's different this time? First, the thefts are automated by a highly sophisticated process, and viruses are able to get around typical online security measures. Second, these thefts appear to be beyond the ability of banks' security systems to handle. Now, more than ever, it's important to be cautious when you do your banking online. If you don't bank online, and never have, don't start now. If you open an account or your bank wants to update your information and it asks for an email address, say that you don't have one. That way you won't expect to ever get email from the bank. If email does show up, it will be from a scammer who is hoping you'll type in your personal information. If you have been routinely checking your balances online or doing any online banking, take extra precautions now. If anything at all looks different on the screen (even if it has an explanation, such as "We have a new look!"), do not click

any icons or type in any information. If you receive an email from your bank that includes a link, do not click. It might be a phishing email designed to intercept your information as you type it in. Your money can be transferred out while you're sitting at the computer, with you none the wiser. If it's necessary to access your account, type in the URL you usually use. Be careful where you wander on the Internet. Many sites are compromised and will automatically download a virus into your computer. Set your virus software to automatically update. If you have Java or Adobe Reader, keep them updated as well. Visit the website of your virus-software manufacturer. In the past you've likely only gone to the site to get answers to problems, or to upgrade your software. Now you need to read the latest news about the online thefts and learn as much as you can about how to protect yourself.

When traveling this summer, bring a chip clip or other hinged clip with you. You can use it to keep the curtains closed in your hotel room. If you have an empty non-aerosol hairspray bottle, you can add some rubbing alcohol to it for cleaning purposes. You also can spray your hands, using it like a hand sanitizer. When you need to rescrew something and find the hole is stripped out, sharpen a pencil to a point, stick it in the hole and

snap the end off. You'll have new wood to screw into.Want beachy highlights? Do them the old-fashioned way. Get lemon or lime juice, splash it on your hands and run your hands over your hair. If you're out in the sun, those areas will lighten. Line your vegetable bin with clean newspaper to keep moisture down. .

Tiny insects can pack a very powerful punch Insects have long been a nuisance at outdoor gatherings. A barbecue, picnic or even a visit to the park can quickly grow uncomfortable when insects buzz and bite. It may take minutes to hours before you see the telltale signs of an insect bite, including welts and redness. You may be left wondering what flew in under the radar. It could be no-see-ums. Many of the insect bites you will receive come from visible mosquitoes of different varieties. They're attracted to sweat or exhaled breath. Females who need a blood meal to produce eggs use people and other animals as their source of nourishment. Although mosquitoes can be problematic, very small insects, aptly dubbed "no-see-ums," could pack a more powerful bite. Oftentimes, people are unaware they've been victimized by a nosee-um until their skin has already grown irritated. No-see-um is actually an umbrella term given to very small biting insects, namely biting midges and sand flies. These insects are part of the order Diptera and families Ceratopogonidae and Phlebotomidae, respectively. Although sand flies and biting midges are not the same insect, their small stature and similar likeness for feeding on blood have inadvertently grouped them together. Nosee-ums are also called punkies, most notably the sand fly variety. Punkies may carry disease and viruses. No-see-ums are commonly found along seashores, rivers and lakes. They are attracted by similar markers as mosquitoes, including octenol, which is found in human breath. Traps containing octenol liquid can be used to attract and kill nosee-ums, and many bug repellents can help keep these bugs away from the skin. Adult biting midges are usually most active between dawn and dusk; they will remain inactive through very windy weather, finding shelter amongst vegetation. They usually stick close to their breeding sites. Many no-see-ums attack in large numbers, biting on any areas of exposed skin, most notably the face,

scalp, hands and legs. The bites can cause acute discomfort, irritation and severe local reactions, according to the Department of Medical Entomology in Wentworthville, NSW, Australia. Bites may cause swelling and extreme itching. Sensitive individuals may experience symptoms for several days to weeks. Although there is no exact method to controlling no-see-ums, they do lay their eggs and breed larvae in standing water, much like mosquitoes. So keep stagnant water clear of your property. You can also avoid going outside at dawn or dusk. If you must go outside, wear repellent or long sleeves and pants. Individuals who experience severe reactions to midge bites should keep an antihistamine product, such as Benadryl, on hand for allergic reactions. In addition, keep a topical anti-ich cream, like Cortizone, around to be safe.

Keep bugs away

Biting flies, mosquitoes, gnats, bees, and beetles can make outdoor excursions unenjoyable. People often rely on insect repellents to keep bugs away. Though there are many repellents on the market, only a few of them may be considered safe. Repellants, such as those that contain DEET, may prove more hazardous to human health than the insects themselves - even if a person has been bitten. To repel insects safely, experiment with these different methods. •Aloe vera, lavender, peppermint, and clove are known to repel mosquitoes. •Grow herbs and flowers like garlic, rosemary, tansy, catmint, basil, pennyroyal, and marigolds. These plants naturally repel many bugs. •Avoid lotions or perfumes with a floral scent, which attract bugs. •Remove standing water around the house where pests may gravitate to and lay eggs. •Citronella candles and sprays may work for a few hours in relatively small areas.

As men and women age, they can experience certain physical changes and health challenges. Vision impairment is one condition that many associate with aging, and cataracts are a primary concern for those of middle-age and older. Today, more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts. According to the National Eye Institute, by age 80, more than half of all Americans will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Cataract is clouding of the eye's lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. Normally the lens is clear, which allows light to pass through to the back of the eye, so that a person can see well-defined images. If a cataract forms and the lens becomes covered in an opaque film, light cannot pass through easily. The result will be fuzzy vision, almost like looking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an individual may eventually lose most of his or her vision. One or both eyes can be affected by cataracts. In the case of both eyes being compromised, one eye is usually worse than the other. The primary risk factor for developing cataracts is age. The older a person is, the greater their risk. However, there are several other risk factors as well. •Intense heat or long-term exposure to UV rays from the sun •Certain diseases, such as diabetes •Obesity •High blood pressure •Inflammation in the eye •Hereditary influences •Long-term steroid use •Eye injuries •Other eye diseases •Smoking Prevent Blindness America provides

free information to the public on everything from cataract basics to tips on what to expect from cataract surgery. Visit preventblindness.org/cataract or call its toll free number at (800) 331-2020. And, as part of its new Healthy Eyes Educational Series, PBA offers a specific online module on cataracts, including a Power Point presentation and guide. The organization shares this information about cataracts: •Early symptoms of a cataract may include cloudy or blurry vision. •Lights may cause a glare, seem too dim or seem too bright. •Sufferers may also find it difficult to read or drive, especially at night. •Individuals may have to change their eyeglass prescriptions often. There are no medications or other treatment options besides surgery to correct cataracts. In the United States, cataract surgery has a 95 percent success rate, and patients often have 20/20 or 20/40 vision post-surgery. Cataract surgery is also the most frequently performed surgery, often performed as an outpatient procedure. In Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, seniors will make up 21 percent of the population by 2026, cataract surgery is also frequent and well tolerated. Approximately 250,000 cataract surgeries take place in Canada each year, according to The National Coalition for Vision Health. It is widely recommended to get regular eye exams to check for cataracts early on. "By getting a complete, dilated eye exam, your doctor can discuss with you the best strategy to protect your vision well into the future," said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. "We encourage everyone, especially those ages 40 and older, to make their vision a priority by scheduling an eye appointment today."

A sandwich of choice It is hard to tell just when panini became a household name, but over the last several years these beloved sandwiches have been growing in popularity. Today panini are on the menus of a variety of eateries and restaurants. Diners can't seem to get enough of these toasty and tasty sandwiches. The term "panini" can be traced back to a 16th century Italian cookbook. However, the first instance of it being used in North America was in 1956. Depending on what you read or to whom you speak, panini started out as a bread sandwich with only one filling. It was unlikely the sandwich was grilled and it was typically made on the go. The word "panino" is Italian for small bread roll. "Panini" is the plural form of the word. This is the diminutive form of the word "pane," which means "bread." Panini are commonly made from ciabatta or rosetta rolls, although different restaurants put their own spins on the sandwich. Though Brits, Americans and Canadians think of panini as a pressed and toasted sandwich, panini actually may be any sandwiches on a roll. Popular Italian fillings in a panino are salami, mortadella, porchetta, prosciutto, and various cheeses. However, less ethnic forms of the sandwich have showcased just about every type of filling. Restaurants may offer roast beef, breaded cutlets, cheese blends, or even vegetarian options, dubbed "vegini." Individuals no longer have to venture to restaurants or Italian sandwich bars, known as "paninotecas," to fulfill their panini fix. Cookware manufacturers have recognized the increased interest in grilled, flat sandwiches and have developed panini makers at many different price points. Electric models are all-inone contraptions that look similar to a rectangular waffle iron. There are also cast-iron pans that enable home chefs to create a pressed sandwich right on the stovetop. Those who do not have specific panini-making equipment have been known to weigh down a pan on top of another with a brick to create the flat-

Caprese Salad-Style Panino

Serves 1 to 2

2 vine-ripe tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick 1/2 pound fresh mozzarella, sliced thinly 20 leaves fresh basil 1 loaf of ciabatta bread, or desired crusty bread Extra-virgin olive oil Balsamic vinegar Coarse salt and pepper

Heat up a panini maker according to manufacturer's directions. Grease the insides by brushing on some olive oil. Cut open the loaf of bread and baste the top and bottom with a little of the extra-virgin olive oil. Layer slices of tomato, mozzarella and basil on the bottom half of the bread. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Brush the outside of the sandwich with more olive oil and place on the panini maker to cook, until the crust is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese inside is melted. Whisk together equal parts of the olive oil and balsamic vinegar with a small amount of salt and pepper to create an easy balsamic vinaigrette. Use as a dipping sauce for pieces of the panini.

From time to time, I like to make a "grown folks" version of my childhood favorites. This macaroni and cheese takes the kid-pleasing side dish to a new level of adulthood. To make this classic into a main-course, vegetarian meal, I've added tofu for a boost of protein. Tofu also absorbs the flavors of the cheeses and enhances the creamy texture of the dish. Serve this with a spinach salad and some whole-wheat rolls, and you've got a meal that is sure to please everyone in the family!

If you've seen the movie "The Wizard of Oz," you might remember that in the Emerald City, the horses were a variety of bright colors. No special effects there -the set designers simply rubbed the animals with Jell-O powder to achieve the bright hues. Those scenes had to be shot very quickly, though, since the horses had a tendency to lick off their colors. If you spent some part of the 1980s trying to puzzle out a solution to a Rubik's Cube, you may be surprised to learn that the world record, held by Frenchman Edouard Chambon, is just 9.18 seconds. And it was set in 2008. You may not have learned about it in school, but during the summer and early autumn of 1859, the United States and the British became involved in a conflict known as The Pig War. In June of that year, a pig on American soil was shot by a British infantryman in Canada. In response to the provocation, the American militia camped out on the border for four months, until the British finally apologized. No lives were lost (other than the pig's).

Common children's eye injuries The active lives that children lead often lead to a few bumps and bruises along the way. While a few bandages and antiseptic creams are par for the course when caring for a child, parents worry about more significant injuries, including eye injuries. According to the Boston Children's Hospital, any injury to your child's eye should be considered a medical emergency. Unlike the heart, lungs and brain, there is not much natural protection for the eye beyond a thin eyelid. This makes it easy to suffer an eye injury, especially for kids who play sports. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says that eye injuries are a significant health problem in the United States, second only to cataracts as a cause of visual impairment. Each year, more than 2.5 million eye injuries occur, and 50,000 people permanently lose part or all of their vision. Nearly half (47.6 percent) of all reported eye injuries occur in people between the ages of 18 and 45. Children ages 0 to 18 experience roughly 25 percent of those injuries. Projectiles and flying debris account for the vast majority of eye injuries across all age groups. Among children, some of the more common injuries occur when children are participating in various sports, including: •hockey •archery •darts •BB guns •bicycling •sports that involve rackets •baseball •boxing •basketball Toys, fingernails and even chemicals

are responsible for some eye injuries in children. It is important to note that 90 percent of all eye injuries can be prevented by using protective eyewear. Some sports organizations mandate that children use protective eyewear. But even if it isn't mandatory, parents should urge children to wear safety goggles. Common Eye Injuries Certain injuries to the eye are more common than others. Here is a look at the various types of injuries that can occur. Chemical burns: This is when a child gets any type of chemical into the eye. Chemicals may be household cleaning objects. These injuries require immediate medical attention because they can cause permanent vision loss. Bruising: Black eyes or ecchymosis occurs from some sort of trauma to the eye. The tissue around the eye becomes bruised, but usually the eye itself is spared. However, only a doctor can determine if the eye is unscathed. Corneal abrasions: The cornea is the

clear, dome-shaped covering at the front of the eye. A foreign item entering the eye, like sand or debris, may scratch the cornea. It also can become scratched by a fingernail or an insect that flies into the eye. A doctor can determine the severity of the abrasion and if any treatment is required. Hyphema: This is a condition of blood in the anterior chamber of the eye where fluid normally flows in and out to nourish eye tissues. Hyphema is caused by an injury, and blood can be seen in the eyeball. It requires prompt medical attention. Eyelid lacerations: This is a cut on the eyelid. An eyelid laceration may be paired with bruising or even corneal abrasion, depending on what struck the eye. Fractures: The orbit is the bony area around the eyeball, and an orbital fracture is when the bones around the eye are broken. This may cause severe eye damage depending on where the eye was struck. It definitely requires immediate medical

assistance, and facial reconstruction may be necessary. Burns: Sunburn not only occurs to the skin but can affect the eyes, too. It is important to wear UV-protective sunglasses outside. Prevent Eye Injuries Eye injuries are largely preventable. Wearing eyewear during sports is essential. Frequent washing of hands and avoiding touching the eyes can prevent the transfer of debris from fingers to the eye. All chemical products should be kept out of reach. If children use cosmetic products, they should not be applied around the eye. Knowing the risks to the eye and how to prevent injury can help ward off serious injuries.

Did you know?

The use of renewable energy sources is on the rise. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the world consumed 504.7 quadrillion Btu of energy in 2008 (the most recent year for which statistics are available). Ten percent of that consumption was from renewable energy sources, including biofuels, biomass, wind, and solar energy. By 2035, the EIA forecasts that consumption of renewable energy will account for roughly 14 percent of the total world energy consumption. World electricity generation from renewable fuels also figures to be on the rise. In 2008, electricity generation from renewable fuels accounted for nearly 19 percent of the world's total electricity generation, a figure the EIA estimates will be nearly 23 percent by 2035.

Produced without the use of chemical fertilizers, organic foods are all the rage. Because they are grown on smaller farms and require careful supervision, organic foods often cost more than their conventionally grown counterparts. If not careful, consumers can spend way more than they anticipated when shopping for organic foods. Fortunately, there are ways to go organic without breaking the bank. Here are some tips. Shop around. Don't stick to just one source for organic foods. In addition to shopping at grocery stores, health food stores and farmers' markets, you may also want to check into purchasing a community-supported agriculture subscription or joining a food co-op or buying club. With the former, you will receive a weekly box of organic foods from a local farm in exchange for paying part of their expenses. With the latter options, you will be able to buy organic foods at a discount. You may even get further discounts in exchange for volunteer work with a food co-op. Buy locally in season. When shopping for organic foods, look for products that have been grown locally and are in season. There will be little in the way of shipping costs for these products, so you will get them at a cheaper price. The food with also taste better since it is in season and has been exposed to less pollution fumes during transport. Buy in bulk. Many places offer organic foods in bulk. Depending upon where you go, you can buy in bulk loose or packaged. If you don't have room to store bulk foods or won't use them before they spoil, consider freezing them or splitting the purchase with a friend. Use cheaper staples. When possible, build your meals

around lower-cost organic foods, like beans, rice and other grains. Instead of serving organic meat every night, which can be quite costly, try dishing up a meal or two made with beans. Make your own. Find recipes for making products that will cost more as organic. Make your own bread rather than buying a loaf of organic bread. It will taste great and save you some bucks. Clip coupons. Leave no stone unturned when looking for organic food coupons, Check newspapers, magazines, flyers and of course, the Internet. Do a search for coupons for organic foods and check with retailers to make sure they will accept online coupons. Some won't. Don't forget to look inside organic food packages and clip any coupons you find there. Grow your own. Many people, even those without green thumbs, can grow their own organic foods. All it takes is a little know-how. When selecting what foods to grow, keep in mind that some conventionally grown produce contains more pesticide residue than others, so try to focus on those. The 12 types of organic produce that experts recommend include apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries. If you have neighbors who grow their own organic foods, consider setting up a neighborhood exchange. Each person can bring their extras, like peppers and spinach, and trade them for something they don't grow, like potatoes. These are just some of the ways in which you can keep the costs of organic foods down. Learning how to shop economically for organic foods takes practice. Don't be alarmed if it takes you a while to get a feel for it.

There are 200 to 400 different breeds of dogs The American Kennel Club officially recognizes 150 dog breeds, but if you take into account all the unrecognized and mixed breeds, there are anywhere from 200 to 400 breeds of dogs. With that many different breeds, there is bound to be a breed out there that appeals to even the most discriminating dog lover. Let's take a look at the history of a few. The roots of the Great Dane can be traced back to the Egyptians. Drawings of dogs resembling Great Danes have been found on the walls of Egyptian monuments dating back to 3,000 B.C. Early versions of the Great Dane were called "Boar Hounds" because of the prey they caught. A gentleman named Buffon gave the breed the name we know it by today. Buffon was traveling through Denmark when he saw a slimmer variety of the Boar Hound (which looked similar to a Greyhound) and commented on the fact that the Danish climate had caused the breed to become a "Grand Danois." After that, the dogs became known as the Great Danish Dogs, with heavier versions called "Danish Mastiffs." It is the Germans who are given credit for developing the breed as we know it today. German nobles imported English Boar Hounds until the 17th and 18th centuries, when they had enough breeding stock. In 1880, a meeting was held in Berlin where breeders and judges agreed the breed developed by the Germans was different from the English Mastiffs and could be called the "Deutsche Dog" or "German Dog." The Germans had trouble convincing others to use the name, however. To this day, the Italians call the breed "Alano" or "Mastiff," while most Englishspeaking countries call the breed "Great Dane." The Great Dane's regal appearance, strength and spirit give the breed a majesty possessed by few. The roots of the Basenji can be traced back to the Egyptians. A Basenji-like dog can be seen in a bas-relief dating back to 4,000 B.C. and even the god Anubis had Basenji-like ears. There is even a Babylonian statue depicting a man and a Basenji-like dog in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. When the ancient empires disappeared, so did the Basenji. It

wasn't until 1682 that a glimpse of the breed was caught in the Congo. In the latter part of the 19th century, Basenjis were discovered in the headwaters of the Nile and the Congo, their original habitat. There, they were used as hunting dogs and given rights equal to those of their masters. The first attempts to import Basenjis to England failed because they had no immunity to distemper. In 1937, after the first pair was successfully imported to England, they created such a stir that special guards had to be posted to keep the crowds moving past their cages. In 1943, they were recognized in the United States as a purebred. Basenjis are highly intelligent, playful, independent, clean and affectionate dogs that make for lovable companions. The Chihuahua got its name from the northern part of Mexico of the same name that borders Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. The exact history of the Chihuahua is not known. However, there is a great deal of speculation as to its origins. The breed could have originated as a result of the breeding of dogs brought by the Spanish and those of the native Aztecs. Another theory is that the breed originated on Malta. There, a breed existed that had a natural molera, a soft spot on top of the skull where the three sections of the skull bone meet. The Chihuahua is one of the few breeds today that has this characteristic.

When first introduced to the United States, Chihuahuas were called "Texas" or "Arizona" dogs. Since the 1950s, breeders have worked to improve the breed's temperament and type. There are two varieties of the Chihuahua, the long and the smooth coat. Known as the world's smallest breed, the Chihuahua is a lively dog that has an attitude bigger than its size.

For the dog lover, there can never be such a thing as too many breeds. From the tallest to the smallest, dogs have quite a history. According to Will Rogers, "No man can be condemned for owning a dog. As long as he has a dog he has a friend; and the poorer he gets, the better friend he is." For the dog lovers out there, that is so true.

Is your cat old? A cat is considered middle aged between the ages of eight and 12. This is when experts recommend paying extra attention to how you care for your cat. Veterinarians are split as to whether a senior is age 12 or 15, so to play it safe, start watching for behavioral changes around age 12. Some of the signs that your cat is getting older include: •Eating more food than usual but not gaining any weight. •Drinking more water than usual or drinking more frequently. •Having difficulty chewing, eating less because they can't hold food in their mouth very well or having bleeding gums, loose teeth and bad breath. Cleaning your cat's teeth and gums on a regular basis will help prevent these problems. •Sleeping more. It is normal for older cats to sleep 18 hours day. •Signs of constipation. •Frequent colds, infections or general illnesses. Some of the symptoms mentioned above could be caused by: •Kidney disease. This will cause increased thirst, decreased appetite and weight loss. •Hyperthroidism. This will cause weight loss but no change in the cat's appetite. Cats will also drink more and experience a change in behavior. •Arthritis. This will cause a reluctance to jump, discomfort around the legs, mostly the hind legs, and maybe even a change in behavior. When a cat gets sick, they are less likely to display their symptoms openly because in the wild weakness makes for being easy prey. Watching your cat closely for subtle changes in their behavior is an excellent idea.
