Spring cleaning is a term most of us have heard. It means that you have spent the winter stuck inside, letting the dust pile up and the dirt get ground into the carpet, and now it's time to clean up. But, there is another place where you spend a lot of time that gets even dirtier than you homeyour vehicle. Vehicles take the punishment of winter on both the inside and the outside. The weather can be tough on your vehicle in the winter, and by the time spring rolls around, it needs more than a run through the automatic car wash. Your vehicle deserves the hands-on approach. The soap you use to wash your car can be ordinary dishwashing liquid or special soap designed especially for washing vehicles. The point is, roll up your sleeves and give it a good wash. Start on the roof and work your way out. Wash everything-get the tires and side view mirrors, get the headlights and the bumper, get every inch of the vehicle. Once the outside is done, it's time tackle the interior. For many people, the car is where they spend a good part of their work day, and it shows. For some people, the vehicle is used to transport kids to school and activities, and it shows. Start with a garbage bag and collect all the cups, fast food containers, pens, business cards, half eaten doughnuts, last week's spelling test, action figures, soda cans and the garage door opener that you yelled at your spouse for losing. After the garbage and stuff is collected, pull out the floor mats and plug in the vacuum. Try to get the big stuff like paperclips and French fries by hand, then start sucking up the rest. Don't forget behind and under the seats as well. If you are like most people, you'll probably find an average of $3 in change. Next, clean the seats, dashboard, doors and console. If the seats are vinyl or leather, many different types of cleaners can be used. If it is fabric, you will need a good upholstery cleaner. A nice way to top off a good interior cleaning is with an air freshener. Returning to the outside of the vehicle, there are many products available to clean your tires. These products will give your tires a wet and shiny look. Finally, you may consider waxing or polishing your vehicle. Waxing a car is in essence adding a layer of protection. Waxing will add shine to the car and give it that wet look, but it will also protect the car from the elements and ultraviolet light. When you polish a car, you are cleaning it. Polishing eliminates scratches, rust, dirt and wax. It contains abrasives that actually remove a thin layer of the car's paint. Polishing also brings out the color and adds shine. Follow the directions on the bottle when waxing or polishing. Spring is good time to start driving fresh and clean. Clean your vehicle now and make room for beach balls, flip flops, lawn chairs and coolers later.

Spring driving safety tips You survived winter, and now that spring has sprung, you think you have it made. Wrong. Spring showers bring more than May flowers; they also bring treacherous driving conditions. From rain to fog, construction to wildlife, spring has its share of driving obstacles. Spring can bring torrential rain and flooded roads. The dangers of these are obvious. Excessive speed on a drenched road can cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Hydroplaning occurs when the vehicle loses traction and slides like a sled over snow. Also, keep an eye out for potholes. If a pothole is filled with water, you cannot judge how deep it is. Going through a pothole at high speed can cause damage to your vehicle as well as cause you to lose control. It is also important to watch for puddles of water along the side of the road. While it was fun jumping in puddles as a kid, it can be dangerous to drive through them as an adult. If you have ever driven through a puddle, you know how it can completely shift your vehicle and send you spinning to regain control. Another danger from Mother Nature is fog. As temperatures rise, fog can form over ground which is cooler. Fog restricts or completely eliminates visibility. The most important rule for driving in fog is to SLOW

DOWN. You must be able to stop within your sight distance. Be sure to slow down BEFORE you enter the fog, not after. Keep your low beam headlights on in the fog and don't hesitate to put on your hazard light. The key to driving in fog is to be seen. Whether you are driving in rain or fog, it is important to keep a safe distance between your car and others on the road. A good rule of thumb is the two-second rule. As a vehicle in front of you passes a stationary object, begin counting. At least two seconds should pass before you pass the same object. Keeping a two-second distance is always a good idea, but it is especially important in inclement weather. Warmer weather also brings road construction. The orange barrels will be out, so take special care to give the road crew the space they need. Observe all construction speed limits and be prepared for delays. Pay attention and don’t wait until the last minute to merge into one lane. Spring means the flowers are blooming and animals are being born. Deer and other wildlife will be out and about and running into roadways. Animals tend to run into traffic, not away from it. Keep an eye out and reduce your speed in areas animals are known to habitat. Winter may be over, but spring brings its own driving risks. Stay vigilant as you drive your way into summer.

Electric car problems Electric cars are poised to take over the automotive market in the near future. Their ability to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and their high MPG ratings place electric and hybrid cars at the top of the list for environmentally friendly vehicles. However, one caveat is that electric cars may disturb the distribution of electric power. Experts warn that electric cars may drain the power grid at the local level if their popularity catches on. The average electric car requires roughly the same amount of electrical power that a small house might consume. Because the popularity of electric cars is expected to increase in concentrated geographic locations, there could be heavy demand on already overly taxed transformers. It's a very real possibility that a high concentration of electric cars in a given area may cause power outages. Most car owners would plug in electric cars at night when demand is generally less. Still, experts warn that the current power grid may not be up to the task of handling the widespread use of electric cars. Research is still underway to determine what would need to be done to create a smarter power grid, one up for the challenge of handling increased use of electric cars.

Install an alarm system for protection The second-most expensive investment most people make is their vehicle. No one likes to watch their investment go down the drain, but according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report, a vehicle is stolen every 21 seconds. The number one property crime in the United States is vehicle theft, costing consumers about $7.8 billion a year. While almost 62% of the stolen vehicles are recovered, the rest are shipped overseas to sell on the black market, sent to chop shops where their parts are sold or installed, or resold to unsuspecting individuals. Vehicle theft translates into big business. Fortunately, it can be prevented with a few precautions and anti-theft devices. Your first line of defense is to park your vehicle in a well-lit area, take your keys out of the ignition, close your windows and sunroof completely, and lock your doors. In some cases, this is not enough to deter a thief and more extensive measures must be taken, such as installing a car alarm and using anti-theft devices. When selecting an alarm, make sure its features match those of your vehicle. If

you don't have power lock doors, don't purchase an alarm that relies upon this feature. Look for an alarm from a major manufacturer with dealers nearby in case you have problems. Ask about the manufacturer's warranty as well as the shop where you will have the alarm installed. Make sure you know how everything on the system works and do a test run after installation to ensure everything works. Vehicle anti-theft devices run the gambit from audible alarms to electronic immobilizers or kill switches to tracking devices. On the low-tech end, you can try steering wheel locks, steering column collars, wheel locks, window decals or window etching. On the high-tech end, you can try a number of vehicle immobilizers ranging from smart keys with computer chips to starter and fuel disablers. Because an ignition immobilizer is linked to your vehicle's electrical system, make sure you have it installed by a professional who will guarantee their work. For the ultimate antitheft device, there is a tracking system that emits a signal that is transmitted to the

Taking care of your tires The weather is warmer and it's time to see how your vehicle survived the winter. Spring is a great time to make those repairs, check those fluid levels and see how the winter has treated your tires. Your tires are something you can check and maintain, even if you aren't mechanically inclined. The first thing to do is check the pressure. You should do this every couple of weeks and before road trips. If you don't check your tire pressure on a regular basis, spring is a good time to start. First, you need to determine the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) for the tire. This can be found on the tire or in the owner's manual. To check the pressure, you will need a tire gauge. Most pressure gauges you can buy today are digital and easy to read. Unscrew the cap on the tire stem and put on the pressure gauge. If it reads "35 psi," that means the tire requires 35 pounds of pressure per square inch. If air is needed to reach the recommend PSI, add air to the tire until you reach that number...BUT DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. Under inflated tires have greater friction with the road, which causes your vehicle to work harder. A vehicle that works harder uses more gas and costs more money. Next, check your tires for wear; a worn

tire is smooth. Hopefully, your tires are not completely bald. But, if they do still have some tread, is it enough? A way to check wear is to reach into your pocket, take out a penny and place it into the tire's groove, with Lincoln's head upside down and facing toward you. If you can see the top of "honest Abe's" head, it's time to go shopping for new tires. The way you drive affects your tires. To ensure they last as long as possible, keep these things in mind. Driving at high speeds generates heat and will reduce the life of the tread. It's also important to consider what you encounter on the road. Avoid going over potholes and hitting curbs when you turn. Also keep an eye out for road kill. They may already be flattened, but don't run over those unfortunate critters. Another way to extend the life of your tires is to rotate them. By rotating your tires, you allow them to wear more evenly. A good rule of thumb is to have them rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. Spring means the flowers are blooming and the weather is warmer. Take the time to make sure your vehicle is operating at its peak. By taking care of your tires, you can make sure it runs its best from the ground up.

GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind. •Place the GPSdevice where it won't obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time. •Don't treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way. •Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area. •Have a general idea where you are going so you'll know if the GPS is potentially guiding you in the wrong direction and can maneuver in advance.

police or a monitoring service. This type of system can lead to a speedier recovery of a vehicle. When deciding what type of device to buy, consider where you park your vehicle, what level of protection you need and more importantly, how effective your antitheft device will be. If someone wants to steal a vehicle bad enough, a simple alarm can be shut off and a steering wheel collar can be sliced. Some manufacturers etch their vehicle's parts with a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). To find out if your vehicle has this feature, log on to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site. No one wants to think that a crime could happen to them, but with statistics being what they are, why take a chance on becoming a victim of vehicle theft. Take the steps necessary to protect your vehicle.

Oil lubricates engine It lubricates a vehicle's engine. It cools a vehicle's engine. It cleans a vehicle's engine. It is motor oil, and without it, an engine could not run. It is as important to your vehicle as it was to the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Motor oil performs five basic functions in a vehicle's engine. It creates a protective film on engine parts to enable them to move freely. It acts as a cushion between metal engine parts to prevent wear. It moves excess heat from the combustion area to the oil pan to keep the engine cool. It works as a sealant between the piston rings and cylinder walls to stop blow-by and power loss. Finally, it suspends contaminants and neutralizes acids to protect the engine from becoming encrusted with harmful deposits. A vital component of a vehicle's engine, motor oil is available in three forms: conventional, synthetic blend and synthetic. The least expensive of the three, conventional oil comes from the ground and is refined and blended with additives. A combination of conventional and synthetic oil, synthetic blend is more expensive than conventional oil and works best for vehicles used for heavier work. Of the three, synthetic oil is the most expensive, but because it is manmade, it tends to penetrate an engine better, leaving fewer deposits and offering greater high-temperature resistance and low-temperature flow. To find out what type of motor oil you should use in your vehicle, consult the owner's manual. In general, you should change the oil approximately every 3,000 miles or three months. Depending upon your know-how, you can either change the oil yourself or have it done by a professional. As your vehicle ages, gaps between engine parts may become larger and thicker oil may be needed. A service center will be able to advise you on this. Of course, even with regular oil changes, the engine light may come on. In the event that it does, follow these steps:

1. Pull over and turn off the engine. 2. Switch on the hazard lights and open the hood. 3. Check the oil and add some if needed. 4. Restart the engine and check to see if the engine light is off. 5. Call a tow truck if the light is still on or go about your way if the light is off and check the oil frequently in the next few days to make sure there is not a leak. Motor oil kept the Tin Man moving and it will keep your vehicle moving, as long as you use it properly and change it regularly. Consult your owner's manual and follow the recommendations listed regarding the use of motor oil. Keep your vehicle happy and running well!

Don’t neglect service

Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified auto technicians. Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that's neglected, notes ASE. To help consumers choose a repair shop that fits their needs, ASE offers the following checklist: •Look for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays. •Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment. •Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards. •Look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work. •Look for the ASE sign or logo; it means the shop employs nationally certified technicians.

Ways to improve your mpg The economy might be slowly recovering, but saving money is still foremost on the minds of many people. Men and women have looked to save money in a variety of ways, including at the gas pump. While there's little drvivers can do to reduce the cost of a gallon of gas, there are ways they can make the gas last a little longer. Improving fuel economy is nothing new to many motorists, but some might still be surprised at the myriad ways they can get more bang for their buck with regards to fuel costs. •Don't break the law. Obeying the speed limit might save your life, and it can also save you money. Typically, fuel economy decreases rapidly as a car reaches and surpasses 60 miles per hour. According to the U.S. Department of Safety, drivers can assume that each five miles per hour they drive over 60, they are paying an additional $0.26 per gallon for gas. •Empty the trunk. Though it might be more convenient to keep your golf clubs in the trunk of your car, extra and unnecessary cargo in a vehicle's trunk drastically reduces fuel economy. An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce miles per gallon by as much as 2 percent, so keep a trunk free of items that aren't absolutely necessary. •Stop idling. Many people let their car idle for several minutes on cold mornings. But today's newer vehicles don't really need to idle to warm up, and idling can be very taxing on fuel economy. Depending on the size of the car, idling can use between a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour. If you still insist on letting the vehicle idle, a few seconds of idling should be enough to warm the engine up. •Embrace cruise control on long drives without lots of stopping and starting. Maintaining a constant speed, which a vehicle does when drivers utilize cruise control, can help save fuel, as it's less taxing on an engine to continue at one speed

then it is to constantly switch back and forth between high and low speeds. •Inflate the tires. Poorly inflated tires lower gas mileage and also pose a safety hazard. The DOE notes that properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by as much as 3 percent. Ideal tire pressure is different for each vehicle, so check your vehicle's owner's manual for recommended tire pressure. Some vehicle manufacturers also include the recommended tire pressure on the vehicle itself, be it in the driver's side door jamb or in the vehicle's glove compartment. Tire pressure printed on the tire's sidewall might not be the ideal tire inflation for your particular vehicle, so always adhere to the manufacturer's recommendation instead. •Drive the car you need, not the car you want. Drivers who truly need to save money at the pump should consider the type of vehicle they're driving, and whether it's the car they need or the car they want. Improving fuel efficiency is a great way for motorists to save money and reduce the expenses associated with vehicle ownership.

Go nuts for almonds By Angela Shelf Medearis

Of all the things to love about almonds, this one should really get your heart pumping: Just a handful of almonds a day could help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. That's good news for just about everyone, as cardiovascular disease holds its spot as the leading cause of death among men and women in the U.S. Research shows that a diet high in heart-healthy foods like almonds can reduce cholesterol levels as much statin drugs like lovastatin and mevastatin. Almonds also are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. A study published in the June 2005 Journal of Nutrition showed that consuming whole almonds, including the skin, doubles the antioxidant intake. Just 1 ounce (22 almonds) packs more protein than an egg and more than 3 grams of dietary fiber. This same portion of almonds provides about 160 calories and the high protein content staves off hunger. Almonds also are a rich source of riboflavin, magnesium, manganese and copper. Shelled almonds may be whole, sliced or slivered with skin on, or blanched with the skin removed. Look for dry-roasted almonds that contain no additional ingredients like sugar or preservatives. Store them in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to prevent them from going rancid and absorbing odors of other foods. Almonds will last several months in the refrigerator and up to a year frozen. This heart-healthy recipe for Savory Almond and Cheese Straws makes an excellent snack and is a great way to incorporate almonds into your diet.

Tuna Corn Chowder

Chocolate-Pecan Ice-Cream Sandwiches

It's no wonder kids of all ages love canned tuna. It tastes good, it's inexpensive, it's versatile, it's found in every grocery store, and when it comes to good nutrition - it's a virtual "treasure chest" from the sea. Just when you thought you'd heard of every way possible to prepare tuna, along comes this recipe!

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, cut up 1 bag (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 2 cup pecan, chopped 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 pint favorite ice cream

1/2 cup finely chopped onion 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat cream of celery soup 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated fatfree milk 1/2 cup water 1 (6-ounce) can white tuna, packed in water, drained and flaked 1 1/2 cups frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed 3/4 cup diced cooked potatoes 1 (2.5-ounce) jar sliced mushrooms, drained 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease large cookie sheet. Place 2 jelly-roll pans or cookie sheets in freezer to use later for ice cream. 2. In microwave-safe large bowl, combine butter, chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk. Cook in microwave oven on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave 30 to 60 seconds longer and stir again until chocolate and butter are completely melted. 3. Into chocolate mixture in bowl, stir pecans, flour and vanilla until combined. Drop dough by rounded measuring tablespoons, 2 inches apart, onto greased cookie sheet. With fingers, press each mound into 2-inch round. 4. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until firm when lightly pressed. Cool on cookie sheet on wire rack 2 minutes. With metal spatula, transfer cookies to wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining

1. In a large saucepan sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute onion for 5 minutes. Stir in celery soup, evaporated milk and water. Add tuna, corn, potatoes, mushrooms and seafood seasoning. Mix well to combine. 2. Lower heat and simmer 6 to 8 minutes or until mixture is heated through, stirring occasionally. Makes 4 (1 1/2 cup) servings. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Moments in time

By The History Channel

On May 6, 1911, George Maledon, the man who executed at least 60 men for "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker, dies of natural causes in Tennessee. Paid $100 for each hanging, he tried to be a conscien-

tious hangman who minimized suffering with a quick death. Maledon considered the job "honorable and respectable work." On April 30, 1927, the Federal Industrial Institution for Women, the first women's federal prison, opens in Alderson, W.Va. All women serving federal sentences of more than a year were to be

brought there, with the vast majority imprisoned for drug and alcohol charges imposed during the Prohibition era. On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run to break Mel Ott's National League record. Mays would finish his career with 660 home runs.

It was British doctor and author Alec Bourne who made the following sage observation: "It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated." Have you ever heard of a book called "Never Again" by Doug Nufer? Probably not - it's not on any bestseller lists and hasn't been reviewed by any notable critics. It's quite possibly unique in literary history, however; in its entire 192 pages, not a single word - even basic words such as a, an, the, of and for - is used twice. If you were to stack up a million $1 bills, they would weigh about one ton. The Twist dance craze in the 1960s changed the culture in America and spread around the world. Most people don't realize, though, that the song "The Twist," which started the fad, wasn't originally sung by Chubby Checker, though he was the one who sent the single up the charts

and has since been irrevocably associated with the dance. The song was originally written and performed by an R&B singer named Hank Ballard. A deejay in Baltimore saw teenagers dancing to Ballard's song and called Dick Clark, host of "American Bandstand." Clark loved it and invited Ballard to perform the song on the show, but it didn't work out. Instead, Clark found someone else to perform the song: Ernest Evans, who changed his name to Chubby Checker. It made his career.

Try this tip: It's tough to eat home-cooked meals as a single eater - most recipes are geared for multiple portions, and you probably don't want to eat the same thing for five days straight. Try this: Get together with some friends and have a potluck. Each guest brings an entree and at least two side dishes, in extra-large portions, and his or her own leftovers containers. Split the food up amongst the guests, packaged as meals. Everyone can cook once and eat for a week. HOCUS - FOCUS
