Part of the fun of Halloween is arriving home after a day of trick-or-treating and having some spooktacular treats to enjoy. Mummy Wraps: Take the "pigs in a blanket" concept to a new level with this clever treat. Simply wrap hot dogs with strips of dough cut from refrigerator biscuits or breadsticks to simulate the look of mummy shrouds. Place them on cookie sheets. Cut small slits for eyes and place peppercorns or black mustard seeds to serve as the eyes. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown. To serve upright, place shish kabob skewers in the mummies before baking and then stick the mummies in a piece of craft foam covered in cheesecloth. Cheesy Fingers: What's scarier than dismembered digits on a plate? All it takes is a package of mozzarella string cheese, a knife and some small, thin slices of green and red bell peppers for this gross delicacy. Cut the cheese sticks in half and then use a knife to carve straight indentations to simulate the bends in the skin around the knuckles of the fingers. At the top, carve out a flattened area for the fingernail. Then place very small slices of red or green peppers to serve as the spooky fingernails. Adhere with a dab of cream cheese. Bottomless Bog: This eerie bog will make children question what is inside. Make a large bowl of green gelatin dessert and pop in different edible creepy crawlies before allowing the gelatin to set. Gummy worms, grape "eyeballs," sour fish, pieces of fruit tape, and anything else you can think of can be added. Kids will scoop out the dessert and discover the frightening things inside. Skull Potatoes: Turn ordinary potatoes into something seemingly more sinister. Halve baking potatoes and carve each half into a skull shape, sort of like the outline of a pear. Bake until the potatoes are cooked through. Frost with sour cream. Use pieces of cheese to mimic decaying

teeth. Black olives can be eyes and nose sockets of the skull. Quesadilla Ghosts: An open-faced quesadilla can be turned into a spooky specter. Cut ghost-shaped pieces from flour tortilla shells. Sprinkle with shredded Monterey jack cheese and allow to bake in the oven until the cheese has melted and the ghosts are crisp. Spread sour cream over the cheese and then use slices of scallion for the eyes and a ring of jalapeno pepper for a mouth. Ghosts can be made gory with salsa as blood. Vampire Veggies: What if veggies could suck blood? Conduct this science experiment and enjoy eating the research afterward. Cut the ends off of stalks of celery. Place the celery in a tall glass filled halfway with tomato juice overnight. The celery should absorb the juice through the thin channels in the stalks. The next day kids can bite into the stalks and see the red streaks inside. Spiderweb Garnish: Top cupcakes, cookies and cakes with delicate, homemade spiderwebs. Melt white chocolate baking melts in the microwave or per the manufacturer's instructions. Use a squeeze bottle or a small spatula to drizzle the chocolate onto a piece of waxed paper in the shape of a spiderweb. Allow the chocolate to cool and then carefully peel off the paper. Mashed Brains: Create a shepherd's pie-inspired dinner that's inspired by the look of brains. Make your favorite meatloaf or hamburger recipe and place into a ramekin or even cupcake pans. Whip up a batch of homemade or instant mashed potatoes. Using a pastry bag fitted with a basic hole cake decorating tip, pipe squiggly lines of potato across the meat. Bake for around 20 minutes, until meat is thoroughly cooked and potatoes are crisp.

Alternatives to trick-or-treating Jack-o-lanterns and costumed kids are among the many things people instantly associate with Halloween. So is the tradition of trick-or-treating, where kids go door-to-door asking for treats that may make dentists cringe. While trick-or-treating is something most kids love, for parents the safety concerns can be overwhelming. Kids innocently knocking on strangers' doors and asking for candy is not necessarily the safest way a child can spend an autumn afternoon. But parents concerned about their children trick-or-treating can embrace several fun alternatives to trick-or-treating that still embody the spirit of Halloween. •Host a haunted house. A haunted house for kids and their friends allows children to dress up in their favorite costumes and enjoy their favorite treats while being scared witless. Parents can join in the fun by dressing up in their own costumes. At the end of the night, award the child who had the best costume, and be sure to send each child home with a package of goodies. •Make your own Halloween treats. Invite kids into the kitchen to create their own Halloween treats. Make sure chocolate is a key ingredient and invite kids' friends over for a tasting or even to join in the fun of cooking. Set the tone for the event a week or so before Halloween by hosting a jack-o-lantern carving that encourages kids to carve their own unique designs in their very own pumpkins. •Go the retail route. Recognizing the safety concerns associated with traditional trick-or-treating, many of today's community centers and malls open their doors to costumed kids on Halloween, providing treats in much the same way kids would get them if they trick-or-treated the oldfashioned way. Once kids complete their jaunts through the mall, they're likely to head home with a bag filled with goodies and maybe even some coupons or gift certificates to their favorite stores. •Camp out. Another safe and fun alter-

native to trick-or-treating is to host a campout under the full moon of Halloween. Kids can invite their friends over for some backyard camping, while Mom and Dad make s'mores and share spooky stories. Decorate the yard with fake tombstones and other Halloween-themed decorative items, and make sure each kids goes home the following day with his or her own bag of treats. Though traditional trick-or-treating gets all the glory, there are several alternatives that are just as fun and much more safe.

Halloween superstitions Many different superstitions abound, some of which are tailor made for Halloween haunting. •If a candle goes out on its own on Halloween, it is thought a ghost has come to call. •A burning candle inside of a Jack-olantern on Halloween keeps evil spirts at bay. •A person born on Halloween can both see and talk to spirits. •Seeing a spider on Halloween could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you. • If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween, don't look back because it could be the dead following. •Don't look at your shadow in moonlight on Halloween night. Otherwise, you will die within a short period of time. •When a person lived a good life, flowers will grow on his grave. If he was evil, weeds will grow. •Never slam a door; otherwise, you could hurt a ghost and risk haunting. •Holding your breath while driving by a cemetery keeps evil spirits from entering your body. •If a bat flies around a house three times, it is a death omen. •Ringing a bell on Halloween will scare evil spirts away. •Knock on wood to keep bad luck away.

Legendary mythical creatures are popular So long as there are myths and folklore, there will be legendary creatures to serve as integral characters of these stories. Although many creatures have remained locked within the pages of a good book, there are many others that have escaped to become part of popular culture. During a season when hauntings and spooky sights are celebrated, many people may be excited to learn about some of the mythical creatures that can put a scare into us all. Phoenix: The symbolism of rising from the ashes to start anew can be directly traced to the myth of the phoenix. This is a bird with colorful plumage and a tail of various colors, depending on the particular legend. The story of this sacred firebird that can be found in the mythologies of the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, and even Phoenicians. The story says that the bird can live between 500 and 1,000 years. At the end of its life, the phoenix makes a nest of twigs that then ignites, burning both the nest and the bird to ashes. From the ashes a new, young phoenix or egg is in its place. Typically the phoenix is considered benevolent, though variations of the myth warn humans against the phoenix. The phoenix has long been presented as a symbol of rebirth, immortality and renewal. It is often looked at for inspiration and may adorn buildings or coins around the world. Werewolf: The wolf has long been a symbol of evil and darkness in folklore. The idea of a wolf being a mindless killer was a common thought in the 19th century, with people decimating populations of wolves around the world in efforts to protect people and livstock. The werewolf is the combination of human and wolf, a shape-shifting creature able to retain either form. The transformation is a curse and is often associat-

ed with the arrival of the full moon. The werewolf legend may have been created by the Olde English or Norse. Ancient Greeks called werewolves lycanthropes, from the Greek "lukos" for "wolf." Werewolf shifting may be involuntary or voluntary, depending on legend. Those who shape-shift voluntarily were thought to do so to engage in nefarious acts in concert with a pact made with the devil. Being bitten by another werewolf and then transforming into one as a form of illness is a common horror story, but actually rare in legend. Many have speculated that werewolf legends may have been used to explain serial killings because of the tendency of some modern serial killers to indulge in practices commonly associated with werewolves, such as cannibalism, mutilation and cyclic attacks. Others surmised that the fear of the wolf itself lends the inevitable horror implications of a human/wolf hybrid. There are also historically documented cases of individuals suffering from porphyria, a condition of photosensitivity and reddish teeth who may have been mistaken for an actual werewolf. Sasquatch: There are believers who feel there was an evolutionary split between Neanderthals and modern man that goes beyond what is generally assumed today. Such a split may have been instrumental in creating the legend of Sasquatch, or Bigfoot, as a human-like being that walks upright but resembles a hairy ape. Sasquatch is an anglicized derivative of the term "sesquac," a word that means "wild man"in Salish Native American language. Some contend that Bigfoot is just a case of mistaken identity; some scientists have expressed interest and belief in the fact that bigfoots may exist. Wild-man stories have proliferated for centuries among the indigenous populations of the Pacific Northwest, where

many cases of sasquatch sitings have taken place. Bigfoot is reported to be between 6 and 10 feet tall, with dark, reddish hair, and giving off an offensive odor by those who have encountered it. Today there is no definitive scientific evidence that Bigfoot exists, but the myth prevails. Vampire: The general public has been fascinated by the concept of a vampire for as long as horror stories have been told. In recent years through books and movies, the vampire has regained popularity and is often seen as a popular cult symbol and often the antagonist of story plots. There have been many theories on the origins of the vampire myth. In Hebrew apocrypha texts, Lilith I may have symbolically acted like a vampire, killing and reveling in a life of blood, which she later shared with Cain. However, the Bible and the Torah mention little of Cain and Lilith at all and nothing of this supposed vampire connection. Perhaps the most iconic person to be associated with vampires is the legend of Vlad Tepes III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, who lived in Transylvania. Vlad was known for his atrocities, including the slow and painful form of execution noted in his nickname. Kraken: Sea monsters have instilled fear in sailors and those who have lived by the sea for some time. One of the feared sea creatures is the kraken, a legendary sea monster of very large size. The kraken was thought to live off of the cost of Iceland and Norway and became a common form of terror in Norse sagas. The kraken is often portrayed as a giant octopus or squid, residing deep within the shadowy swells of the water. It is likely the kraken myth originated from the real giant squid that have been known to inhabit many different waterways.

Fruits and vegetables are easier to come by in the summer months than in the fall and winter. But to stay healthy and ward off diseases, it's important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet year-round. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months. Sweet potatoes: They're loaded with beta-carotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B-6. Sweet potatoes have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert. Apples: A traditional fall favorite, apples are easy to find in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They are a quick, easy snack and can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Pumpkin: Pumpkin is a great source of beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. They also contain potassium. Canned or prepared fresh pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts. Broccoli: This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, and boost the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E. Green Beans: Green beans are high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium,

folate, iron and magnesium. Spinach: Dark-green veggies contain a variety of nutrients a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Try this wonderful recipe for Pecan Pork Chops with Pumpkin Apple Butter using these superstar fall fruits and vegetables.

Pecan Pork Chops with Pumpkin Apple Butter You can use canned sweet potatoes that have been drained and mashed instead of pumpkin, if desired. Any remaining Pumpkin Apple Butter mixture will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or you can freeze it in an airtight container for up to three months. It's also delicious on bread, pancakes or waffles. If you're pressed for time, a good quality, commercially made jar of pumpkin butter also will work well. 1 (14-ounce) can pumpkin puree 1/2 cup apple juice 1/4 cup water 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, stevia or agave syrup 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg or

cloves 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 cup pecans 1/2 cup Panko whole wheat bread crumbs 8 (1/4 inch thick) boneless pork chops 1 egg, beaten with 3 tablespoons of water 1/4 cup oil for frying

Whisk together pumpkin puree, apple juice, water, brown sugar, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon in a saucepan until smooth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture has reached the consistency of applesauce, about 10 minutes. Set aside. Meanwhile, sprinkle pork chops with 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and cayenne pepper. Pulse pecans, bread crumbs and remaining 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper in a food processor until the pecans are finely chopped. Pour into a shallow dish. Dip the pork chops in the egg, shake off excess. Press pork chops into the pecan mixture to coat on both sides. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add breaded pork chops and cook until golden brown on both sides and cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on a paper towellined plate. Place 2 tablespoons of pumpkin apple butter on each plate. Place pork chops on the pumpkin butter. Serve with a side of steamed spinach, green beans or broccoli. Makes 8 pork chops. between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof." The original jack-o'-lanterns were turnips, not pumpkins. The custom began in Ireland, where residents hollowed out and carved faces into large turnips for the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain. The turnips, placed on windowsills, were believed to ward off evil spirits. In Scotland, young men would dress in white and blacken their faces in an imitation of the dead. Peter the Great was known during his reign in the late 17th and early 18th centuries as "Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias." In order to raise money, he taxed just about anything he could think of, including births, burials, chimneys and even beards. By law, if you are planning to build in Washington, D.C., the edifice must be no taller than the Capitol building. You probably know that physicist Albert Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize. You might not realize, however, that the prize was for his work on the photoelectric effect of light, not for his more famous theory of relativity. If you are like the average American woman, you will spend a grand total of 60 days of your life in the practice of removing body hair.

Frightening films are a tradition

Movies are one of the many traditions associated with Halloween. What would Halloween be without some scary classics? To many, horror movies are part of what makes Halloween so great. This Halloween, turn the lights off, pop some popcorn and then cuddle up with these frightening classics. •Carrie. A 1976 classic based on a bestseller from noted horror author Stephen King, this film focuses on Carrie White, a social outcast at her high school who harbors a secret her cruel classmates aren't aware of ... until it's too late. •Halloween. No Halloween would be complete without this 1978 film named after the holiday itself. Michael Myers escapes from a mental institution and quickly sets out to terrorize his hometown. Young Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis in one of her earliest roles on the big screen, is among those targeted by Myers. •Friday the 13th. A summer camp that was the scene of a child's drowning is the setting for this 1980 horror classic. As a group of young counselors work to ready the camp for its reopening, a murderous man lets the counselors know he has other ideas. •Dawn of the Dead. George Romero's sequel to "Night of the Living Dead," this gory 1978 classic follows a growing group of zombies and a frightened group of nonzombies as they seek refuge in a mall. •The Ring. Fans of this 2002 chiller likely never looked at their televisions in quite the same way after seeing the film.
