BONANZA ... Just Good Reading

Memories of childhood days when every visit to the pediatrician seemed to culminate in a needle in the arm may drum up an accelerated heartbeat each time you walk into the doctor's office as an adult. But the chances you'll be given a shot are slim, right? Not necessarily. Despite what many think, immunizations do not always cease once you've reached a certain age. There are certain recommended inoculations that adults can receive to protect themselves from illness. Although many people receive the brunt of their vaccines early on in life, you're never too old to give up on immunizations entirely. The Immunization Action Coalition, in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, list certain vaccines that are recommended for adults. If you are planning on traveling overseas, there may be more vaccines you need to prevent illness or injury. By the time you reach 65 years of age, it is adviseable to have checked off this list of immunizations and work with your doctor to create a vaccination schedule. Influenza: This vaccine is recommended annually in the fall or winter. Pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPSV): Individuals between the ages of 19 to 64 should check with their healthcare provider to see if they require this vaccine. Smokers may need one to two doses. Individuals 65 and older are recommended to get this vaccine if they have never before been vaccinated. Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap): This is an adult version of the combined whooping cough vaccine. If you are an adult and frequently come into contact with infants, it is adviseable for the infants' safety to have received a whooping cough vaccine. Tetanus is required every 10 years. Hepatitis B: If you have a specific risk for Hep B, you may need to take this vaccine. It is given in three doses. Hepatitis A: Again, risk factors will signify if you need this immunization. This is a two-dose vaccine. Human papillomavirus (HPV): HPV is responsible for many cases of cervical cancer. It is adviseable for women age 26 or younger or men age 21 or younger to receive the HPV vaccine. This vaccine is given in three doses over six months. Measles, mumps, rubella: Measles have slowly been making a comeback despite have nearly been eliminated in the United States. Adults should have at least one dose of MMR in their lifetime. Check with a doctor if you require a second dose. Varicella: If you've never experienced chickenpox, or only received one dose of this vaccine when younger, you may require another dose. Chickenpox outbreaks can be more severe in adults. Meningococcal: This vaccine is recommended for individuals ages 19 to 21 who live in a residence hall or close contact with others. Meningococcal is best known as a cause of meningitis and sepsis. It can be transmitted through saliva and occasionally through close, prolonged general contact with an infected person. Shingles: The zoster vaccine is administered to keep shingles at bay. Shingles comes from the same virus that causes chickenpox, and individuals who have had chickenpox are at a higher risk for experiencing shingles, which can be very painful, later in life. The vaccine is recommended for those ages 65 and up. Vaccines are not only for the young. Certain immunizations can keep you healthy and are recommended throughout life. *** Lemon balm may be able to help individuals relieve stress or feelings of nervousness that stem from managing a disease.

Kindergartner’s school bus safety A kindergartener's first day of school is a day to cherish. There are so many firsts to experience, from wearing a backpack for the first time to making new friends to riding on a school bus. All of these firsts can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. For many youngsters, school marks the first time they are away from their parents for an extended period of time. As a result, safety concerns - especially concerning transportation to and from school - is foremost on the minds of many parents. School bus safety is something that should be presented to children in terms they can understand. Riding on a school bus is often a fun experience for kids, but the prospect of leaving Mom or Dad behind at the curb can spark mixed feelings. It is best to prepare students for the school bus a few weeks prior to the first day of school to gauge their reactions and plan accordingly. Many school districts and transportation companies, like the North Penn School District Transportation Department in Pennsylvania, host annual events that help introduce kindergarteners-to-be to the school bus. Children are encouraged to enter the bus and learn about all of the equipment. The students also may be given a short ride around town, and safety information is typically included. If the school district where you are living does not host a special orientation day for children entering kindergarten, see if you can arrange to have a bus tour by contacting a bus company in the area. Although safety tips may be covered at orientation, it is a good idea to reinforce lessons at home in preparation for the first day of school. Here are some important topics to go over. • Walk to the bus using a sidewalk if there is one. If no sidewalk is present,

walk on the opposite side of the street facing oncoming traffic. • Wait for the bus at the designated stop. Don't wander away. • Do not go into the street while waiting for the bus to arrive. • Do not roughhouse or run around with friends while waiting for the bus to arrive. • Wait for the bus a safe distance away from the street until the bus stops and opens the door. • Walk one-by-one onto the bus. Do not push or crowd the doorway. • Once on the bus, quickly find a seat and sit down. • If there is a seatbelt, fasten it. (Children should be familiar with how to latch a seatbelt.) • Do not put your head, arms or anything else out of the bus window. • Keep the bus aisle clear of backpacks or other items. • Keep voices down so not to distract the driver. • Listen to the driver. • Do not throw things on the bus. • Unbuckle your seatbelt only when the bus has stopped at the school (or your stop at home)and the door is open. • Exit the bus slowly and do not push. • If you must cross the street when exiting the bus, do so in front of the bus so the driver can see you. Parents can go over these rules again and again. On the first day of school, some parents prefer to let their children ride the bus to school and then the parents meet the children at the school to watch the boys and girls exit. This also reassures the children that they are safe riding the bus. The first day of school may be full of new things, but children can acquaint themselves with school bus safety and grow accustomed to riding one each day.

Snacking does not have to be unhealthy Snacking often elicits mixed reviews. Some health plans say that it is important to eat several small meals or snacks during the day to keep metabolism rates in check. Other information states that snacks can be a person's undoing, causing unnecessary weight gain - especially when snacking is frequent. These mixed feelings can be a little confusing. The National Health and Nutrition Survey supports snacking. The survey found that people who eat snacks in addition to three meals a day had higher levels of nutrients in their diets. But not all snacks are a good idea. Consuming a fattening bag of potato chips is an unhealthy approach to snacking. However, a piece of dark chocolate or a handful of nuts can add essential nutrients to a person's diet. Many different snacks make healthy additions to a person's diet. Two to three snacks a day may be all that's needed to help keep a person feeling satiated and less likely to overeat at meals. Here are some healthy snack ideas. Olives: A handful of olives can quench a salty craving and provide essential fatty acids that may help to improve heart health. Hummus: Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are naturally low in fat and high in fiber. This dip will keep you feeling full. Edamame: These are a variety of soybeans that are sweeter, larger and more easily digested than other soybeans. They are a natural source of antioxidants and isoflavones. Banana and chocolate: Rolling a banana in semi-sweet chocolate chips can satisfy a fruit and chocolate craving. Dark chocolate bark: Melt dark chocolate and add a desired fruit, such as dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins. Enjoy a small piece, which will be high in antioxidants, to fend off hunger pangs. String cheese: An individual serving of low-fat mozzarella or Monterey Jack string cheese offers a serving of dairy and protein to keep you full. Smoothie: Whip up a smoothie made from protein-rich Greek yogurt and some frozen fruit. Add a dash of fruit juice and blend. Enjoy as a meal replacement or a refreshing snack. Fruit: There's no better snack than fruit. Keep a bowl of fruit or some homemade fruit salad on hand and enjoy a small portion when you want to fill up without consuming too many calories. Whole-grain crackers: Fiber-full grain crackers can satisfy salty cravings as well as fill your stomach with something hearty. Men and women can choose among a variety of healthy snacks throughout the day. Smart snacking can mean reducing feelings of hunger and increasing the amount of nutrients in the body. Snacks also may be an integral component of a healthy weightloss plan.

Food may contribute to cancer Many people likely feel that the foods they consume are safe. But much of the food consumed contains carcinogens. According to NutritionFacts.org, of 100 samples of fast food chicken taken from area restaurants in California, all of them tested positive for carcinogenic heterocyclic amines, chemicals that form in meat when cooked at high temperatures. Also, some foods naturally produce carcinogens. Tannic acid, which is found in tea, coffee and cocoa has been linked to liver tumors in animals. There are a number of foods that contain carcinogenic ingredients, whether naturally produced or formed through manipulation of food sources. The FDA and the US Dept. of Agriculture routinely check the safety of foods and present guidelines to help people choose the foods and drinks they consume wisely. Many foods are being produced with the use of pesticides, hormones and other potentially hazardous substances. Here are some of the foods that may pose a significant threat. Meat products: Animals may be given hormones and antibiotics to stimulate weight gain, or as in the case of egg-laying hens, the production of eggs. They also may feed on foods that contain chemical pesticides.

Berries: It is estimated that up to 36 pesticides are sprayed onto strawberries, making them one of the most chemicallyprotected crops. Other fruits are routinely sprayed to keep bugs at bay. Apples: Half of the chemicals the USDA found on apples were neurotoxins, which may cause nervous system damage. Apple juice has recently come under fire because of high levels of arsenic contained in the beverage. Spinach: This leafy vegetable can be finicky and prone to contamination. Therefore, powerful pesticides may be used. In recent years, spinach has come under fire for containing salmonella. Coffee: Many times crops from overseas are sprayed with chemicals that are not regulated in North America. Imported coffee beans seem to be big offenders and might contain high levels of chemical contamination. Consumers also can look for these substances, all of which are known carcinogens, on the list of ingredients of their favorite foods. •acetaldehyde •acetamide •azo color and compounds •benzene •benzidine •bis (2-Chloromethyl) ether •cadmium •chlorinated paraffin waxes •3,3-dichlorobenzidine •dichloromethane •hexachlorobenzene •nitrites •polychlorinated dibenzodi-

Flashback Answers: 1) Pat Boone. The song has since been covered by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Rivers and even John Fogerty; 2) "After Midnight," in 1970. "Easy Now" was on the b-side. Clapton didn't get a solo No. 1 until 1974 with "I Shot the Sheriff"; 3) Gerry and the Pacemakers, in 1964. The song has been covered by numerous others, including Ray Charles and Rickie Lee Jones; 4) The Love Unlimited Orchestra, started in the 1970s, was a full 40-piece orchestra, heavy on the string instruments; 5) "Personality" and "Stagger Lee." Because "Stagger Lee" was about a murder, Dick Clark made Price change the lyrics when the song was performed on "American Bandstand"; 6) Bluesman Bobby "Blue" Bland, in 1973. Like many of you, one of my favorite ways to cool off is with a bowl of ice cream - except I prefer to make mine dairy-free. My recipes for Dairy-Free Frozen Vanilla Custard and Dairy-Free Banana Walnut Frozen Custard are delicious and healthy ways to enjoy two of America's favorite icecream flavors. If you don't have an ice-cream maker, follow the directions below for creating these frozen treats using your blender and freezer, and beat the heat with a frozen treat!

Ice cream for everyone!

1. In a blender, combine soymilk powder, water and soymilk until well-blended. 2. Combine the soymilk mixture with the syrup, vanilla and vinegar in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stirring constantly, cook until the mixture is thick and syrupy in consistency. 3. Pour mixture into an ice-cream maker and follow manufacturer's directions. If you don't have an ice-cream maker, use a 9- by 5-inch metal loaf pan or other medium-sized metal or aluminum pan. Place the pan in the freezer uncovered for 1 hour. 4. Stir mixture well every 30 minutes with wire whisk for the first two hours (this will prevent ice crystals from forming). After the final stirring, allow frozen

Bulgur Bean Burgers

Chicken Burgers

Satisfy vegetarians and meat-eaters alike with these healthful, Middle Easternstyle Bulgur Bean Burgers. No one will miss the beef when black beans and spices are providing first-class flavor.

1 pound ground chicken breasts 1 medium carrot, grated (1/2 cup) 2 green onions, minced 1 clove garlic, crushed with garlic press 4 hamburger buns, warmed Sliced cucumber, lettuce leaves and green onion (optional)

1 cup water Salt and ground black pepper 1/2 cup bulgur 1 can (15 to 19 ounces) reducedsodium black beans, rinsed and drained 6 ounces plain low-fat yogurt 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 cup (packed) mint leaves, chopped Nonstick cooking spray 1 small shredded Kirby (pickling) cucumber 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns 4 lettuce leaves 1 medium tomato, sliced

1. In medium bowl, with hand, mix ground chicken, carrot, green onions and garlic until evenly combined. 2. On waxed paper, shape chicken mixture into four 3 1/2-inch round patties (mixture will be very soft and moist). 3. Place patties on grill over medium heat and cook about 12 minutes or until juices run clear when center of burger is pierced with tip of knife, turning over once. (If you have a grill with widely spaced grates, you may want to place burgers on a perforated grill topper to keep them intact.) 4. Place burgers on warmed buns. Serve with cucumber slices, lettuce leaves and green onions if you like. Serves 4.

1. In 1-quart saucepan, heat water and 1/2 teaspoon salt to boiling over high heat. Stir in bulgur. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 to 12 minutes or until water is absorbed. 2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with potato masher or fork, mash beans with 2 tablespoons yogurt until almost smooth. Stir in bulgur, allspice, cinnamon, cumin and half of mint until combined. With lightly floured hands, shape bean mixture into four 3-inch-round patties. Spray both sides of each patty lightly with nonstick cooking spray. 3. Heat nonstick 12-inch skillet over medium heat until hot. Add burgers and cook 8 minutes or until lightly browned and heated through, turning over once. 4. While burgers are cooking, prepare yogurt sauce: In small bowl, combine cucumber, remaining yogurt and mint, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Makes about 1 1/4 cups. 5. To serve, divide lettuce, tomato and burgers among buns; top with some yogurt sauce. Serve with remaining yogurt sauce. Serves 4.

Moments in time By The History Channel On Aug. 24, 79, after centuries of dormancy, Mount Vesuvius erupts in southern Italy, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. In the 18th century, the cities were rediscovered and excavated, providing an unprecedented archaeological record of the everyday life of an ancient civilization. On Aug. 25, 1835, the first in a series of six articles announcing the supposed discovery of life on the moon appears in the New York Sun newspaper. The hoax articles offered vivid description: enormous amethyst crystals and lush vegetation, as well as animals such as unicorns, two-legged beavers and furry, winged humanoids resembling bats. On Aug. 23, 1902, pioneering cook-

book author Fannie Farmer, who changed the way Americans prepare food by advocating the use of standardized measurements in recipes, opens Miss Farmer's School of Cookery in Boston. On Aug. 20, 1920, the owners of four Ohio League teams -- the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians and Dayton Triangles -- meet to form a new professional football league. Football star Jim Thorpe was nominated as president of the new league. On Aug. 21, 1959, President Dwight Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. The president also issued an order for an American flag featuring 50 stars arranged in staggered rows. On Aug. 22, 1962, President Charles De Gaulle of France survives one of several assassination attempts against him thanks to the superior handling perform-

ance of the presidential automobile, the Citroen DS 19. During the attack, a hail of 140 bullets shattered the car's rear window and punctured all four of its tires. On Aug. 26, 1974, Charles Lindbergh, the first man to accomplish a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927,

dies in Maui, Hawaii, at the age of 72. To reduce weight on the plane during his famous flight, everything that was not essential was left out: radio, gas gauge, night-flying lights, navigation equipment and parachute. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc

Check out these facts about August August arrives every year, and except for the often-oppressive heat that can occur in August throughout the world, few people may give thought to the other notable facts about this month. Although August is now the eighth month of the calendar year, it was actually the sixth month in the early Roman calendar. August was named after Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus, the great-nephew of Julius Caesar. He became the first emperor of the Roman Empire. "Augustus" means "the revered one." August has two birthstones. Peridot, green in color, is the one that is commonly known. Peridot is one of the oldest-known gemstones. The other is Sardonyx, a gem with white and brown bands that was once believed to have mystical powers. August also has two official flowers: the poppy and gladiolus. Francis Scott Key, the author of "The Star Spangled Banner," was born on August 1, 1779. In addition to Key, other notables born in August include Annie Oakley,

Meriwether Lewis, Benjamin Harrison, Orville Wright, and Leonard Bernstein. The 19th Ammendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, was proclaimed on August 26, 1920. Great Britain provided for the end of slavery in its colonies on August 28, 1833.

Pets are affected by secondhand smoke, too Lighting up a cigarette may not just hurt yourself and the people around you. Your pet may be paying the price for your habit, too. Veterinarians say that secondhand smoke is a threat to dogs and cats as well as humans. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS, is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette or cigar and the smoke that is exhaled by the smoker. Research indicates that secondhand smoke contains more than 5,000 substances, many of which are known to cause cancer in humans and other animals. A number of studies have found that nonsmokers who regularly breathe the tobacco smoke from others are at a higher risk for developing heart disease or certain cancers, like lung cancer. There also have been numerous scientific papers that report the pronounced health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets. Some veterinarians have linked tobacco smoke to lung and nasal cancer in dogs, lung cancer in birds and oral cancer and lymphoma in cats. Indeed, according to a study by Colorado State University, pets that live with smokers have a higher risk of developing particular types of cancer, including twice the risk of developing lung cancer. Long-nosed canines, such as collies, may be susceptible to nasal cancers because carcinogens from cigarette

Long-nosed dog breeds, like shepherds, may be more susceptible to nasal cancers due to inhalation of carcinogens from secondhand smoke. smoke lodge in the large surface area of the nasal cavity and sinuses, says a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. However, short- and mediumnosed breeds are more susceptible to lung cancer because the nose doesn't trap the carcinogens as easily, allowing them to quickly travel to the lungs, where they

take root. Bird owners may already be familiar with avians' susceptibility to respiratory illnesses from in-air contaminants. Birds' respiratory systems are very sensitive to air pollutants, including cigarette smoke. Pets are also affected by something known as "thirdhand smoke." This is the residue that collects in areas where smokers frequent. It is found on interior surfaces of the home and even on people and pets themselves. Cats, which are notably self-groomers, tend to develop oral maladies because they are licking harmful chemicals, including third-hand smoke, from their bodies on a daily basis. Tufts College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a study that showed that the number of cats living with mouth cancer was higher for those living in homes with smokers than those cats living in smoke-free homes. There is also evidence that cats living with a smoker are twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma. Third-hand smoke may also provoke skin allergies and irritation. When individuals think of smoking-related complications, they tend to think solely of fellow human beings. However, pets are susceptible to cancer as well, and secondhand smoke can be just as deadly to your four-legged friends as it can be to your family.

It's not known who made the following sage observation: "Arguing about whether the glass is half-full or half-empty misses the point, which is this: The bartender cheated you." The longest war in history lasted 335 years and resulted in exactly zero casualties. In 1651, the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly off Great Britain declared war upon each other, but nothing ever came of the conflict and it was soon forgotten. Finally, in 1986, the two combatants agreed to a peace treaty. Do you suffer from cacodemonomania? If you believe that you are possessed by an evil spirit, you do. The world's smallest mammal can be found only in Thailand and Myanmar. Weighing about as much as a dime, Kitti's hog-nosed bat is sometimes called the bumblebee bat due to its diminutive size.

You might be surprised to learn that an eagle can kill a young deer and fly away with it. The Beatles was not the first band in which John Lennon played. Those previous groups obviously didn't work out, though; in fact, at one point Lennon broke a washboard over a bandmate's head during a dispute. After the Beatles' success, though, Lennon apologized in style: He bought the poor guy a supermarket. Those who study such things say that armadillos can be housebroken. At sea level, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. At the top of Mount Everest, though, the lower air pressure reduces the boiling point to 156 degrees.
