Brilliant novel of Jewish life in present day London! "The Finkler Question" touches on a number of other vital and compelling topics: men and their relationships to each other male competition the insecurity of middle aged men and women infidelity and multiculturalism in the modern society. Jacobson deftly weaves these topics throughout this brilliant novel, which is filled with humor and pathos. This is definitely one of my favorite novels of the year, and it replaces The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet as my favorite of the current list of Booker Prize finalists.

The Hurricane Hugh Howey, you glorious bastard. I just finished reading The Hurricane and I cannot believe I was that enthralled by a story that did not involve space ships, zombies or subterranean societies. I was captivated by Daniel's journey from his connected solitude to discovering that first and deepest human connection in the silence after the storm. I love the way you immersed me in the scene and made me feel the wind and hear the incidental background noises. Yet, somehow, the sentences never feel drawn out or too wordy. That is a rare talent and I'm glad you let us share in it.

The Iron Khan: A Detective Inspector Chen Novel I read this like a glutton, glad it was published. The story of Inspector Chen expands into the Gobi. This is by far the most ambitious of the novels in terms of multiple subplots moving in parallel directions, and the Iron Khan himself is very ghoulish.
