THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Katie and Ridge shared a loving moment at the office. Hope and Liam traveled to the South Los Angeles Animal Shelter, where they met with the workers who told their stories. Brooke tried to get Katie to allow Bill more access to his young son, as well as his old job back. Wyatt was confident that Hope would choose him over his brother in the end. Aly confided in Oliver about how much she hated Taylor for killing her mother. Quinn made a hefty demand of Bill regarding their son. Oliver asked Aly to go on a romantic getaway with him. Former “Price Is Right” host Bob Barker paid a visit to Liam to set up the animal-awareness campaign. Wait to See: Hope and Liam adopt a kitten from the shelter.

King Features Weekly Service

The “backward” finesse is a relatively rare play, but it can prove very effective when the setting is right. Consider this deal where West leads three rounds of diamonds against your fourheart contract. You ruff and play the jack of trumps, East taking the ace and returning a club. After winning the club and drawing trumps, you are faced with the problem of avoiding a spade loser. Ordinarily, you’d lead a low spade to the king, return a spade and finesse the jack. This line of play would succeed about half the time, but it fails in the present case

because West has the queen instead of East. However, you should know from the bidding that playing the spades normally is sure to fail. After East turns up with the ace of hearts, West becomes marked with the queen of spades because he needs it for his opening bid, and also because East would not have passed one diamond with an ace and a queen in his hand. Under these circumstances, your best chance is to resort to a backward finesse. You begin by leading the jack of spades — not the eight — from your hand, planning to finesse if West follows low. If West covers with the queen, you win with dummy’s king, return a spade and finesse the eight. In the actual deal, the contract is made because East has the ten. Mathematically, the backward finesse is a poor play, because West will have the queen and East the ten only one deal out of four, whereas the simple finesse succeeds in one deal out of two. But when West is known to have the queen, the backward finesse offers the only realistic hope of making the contract.

There were even cases of so-called scientific studies manipulated by people with power, money and secrets to hide. “A Trust Betrayed” shifts between the slow-moving cogs of military bureaucracy and the harrowing reports of the afflicted — Marines who wondered how the Corps to which they had sworn fidelity could have betrayed that trust to such a level. The story moves from the initial reports of solvents found in the groundwater to the section of the Jacksonville City Cemetery known as “Baby Heaven,” so named because of the alarming number of miscarriages interred there. This extremely disturbing book demands the military hold itself accountable for the health and safety of its bases and tenants so that health disasters like the one at Camp Lejeune never happen again.

Spring showers bring May flowers, but they may also bring slippery driving conditions and decreased visibility. When it’s wet, a braking car needs up to four times its regular stopping distance. Worn tires can cause cars to hydroplane, or skim over the road with little or no traction, which can lead to lost control. Proper tire maintenance is a relatively simple task and can help drivers stay safer on the road. The first step toward proper tire maintenance is to check the tire pressure with an accurate tire gauge at least once a month. This should be done when the vehicle has been driven less than one mile or has been sitting for at least three hours. The recommended air pressure for a vehicle is listed on the sticker on the door jamb, fuel filler lid, glove box or trunk or in the owner’s manual. In addition to checking the inflation pressure, drivers should have their tires, including tread depth, inspected regularly by an automotive professional. Wheel alignment should be checked annually, and tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles or according to the vehicle’s owner’s manual. Proper wheel alignment and rotation will help tires roll more smoothly, which can increase traction, fuel mileage and tire life. Don’t wait for a rain storm to check your lights and wipers. Make a habit of checking both at regular intervals, when the weather is good -- like when you fill up at the gas station. Seeing and being seen are critical anytime, but especially while driving in the rain. Functioning lights are important not only for your ability to see, they’ll help other drivers see your vehicle. Windshield wipers should be replaced at the first signs of trouble, like streaking or noisy operation, in order to provide the best visibility while on the road. Proper vehicle maintenance may increase traction and visibility during a rain storm, but good driving behaviors, like slowing down and using caution, are also very important. Although the rain will go away, it will come again another day -be prepared.

TEN GOOD REASONS TO INVEST IN AN ANNUAL CAR “PHYSICAL” AND NEEDED MAINTENANCE

1 Cut repair costs. Discovering a worn component before it creates major problems can save big money. 2 Safety. A poorly maintained vehicle can drive you into a serious accident, 3 Better performance. This translates to improved fuel economy as well as “drivability”. 4 Saving the environment. Under maintained vehicles are a serious contributor to air pollution. 5 Improved trade-in/resale value. A well maintained vehicle can be worth 2-3 times as much as one that’s been neglected. 6 Better handling. Incorrect wheel alignment, worn suspension components and/or tires cause poor ride and handling. 7 Ability to plan ahead. When a checkup indicates future need for replacement of a part you can budget accordingly. 8 Dependability. A well maintained vehicle is less likely to stall, fail to start or otherwise leave you stranded. 9 Driving enjoyment. It’s more comfortable and more fun to drive a car that holds the road and rides well. 10 Pride of ownership. It’s said that your car is an extension of your personality. Keep it looking like you care.

Preparation Is The Key To DIY Success

(NAPSI)—From smaller fixes around the house to grand-scale projects, everyone has a little “do it yourself” inspiration in them. That’s the word from experts who say the keys to success and safety—no matter the project—are to have an organized storage and work space and to properly maintain your tools. Your house and yard aren’t the only places that should undergo an annual spring-cleaning. Your garage or shed should also be on your list for cleanup. There are several reasons to take the time to organize. • Spend less and avoid duplicate materials and items by knowing what you already have on hand. • Save time because you’ll be able to find what you need faster. • Make the most out of the space you have. A good way to start is by taking inventory of what you have, separating products from tools. Items that get the most use—such as shovels, brooms and rakes—should be placed in an easily accessible location. Extension cords and hoses should be coiled and stored out of the way. Place smaller tools like hammers, drills and other hand tools within reach. Look for broken or leaking bottles or containers that may have expanded or broken during the cold winter months. Inspect your lawn equipment and consider the condition of the belts and hoses. Do the blades need to be sharpened or replaced? Do fluids such as oil and gasoline need to be replaced with fresh?

Homeowners Scramble as Termites Spring to Action

(http://www.newsusa.com/ ) - Spring is here -- and with the refreshing start of a new season, the last thing you need on your mind is a termite invasion. However, according to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), spring is a key time for termite infestations to occur in the home. Termites eat constantly and can cause serious structural damage to your home, which is why prevention is paramount in keeping your home termite-free. Some useful tips include: * Avoid any moisture at the foundation of your home. * Divert water away from your property through properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. * Reduce humidity and ventilate crawl places. * Repair gutters and leaking outdoor faucets so that water will run away from the house, thus removing moisture. * Remove infested stumps and trees near the foundation of the house. * Store scrap lumber and firewood as far from the house as possible. * Replace weather stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows. * Routinely inspect the foundation of your home for signs of mud tubes (used by termites to reach a food source), cracked or bubbling paint and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. However, if termites have already made their way into your home, it is important to contact a licensed pest professional to assess the situation. There are many solutions to control termite infestations, including barrier treatments and baiting systems and your professional will help you to select the most effective treatment plan to suit your needs. NPMA recommends your home be checked every year for termite infestations. Termites are silent destroyers and can often go unnoticed for long periods of time until the damage is already done. What’s worse is that damage from wood boring insects is not covered by most homeowners’ insurance policies, which can become a major and unexpected expense for homeowners. Protect your property with annual inspections from a qualified pest professional.

Keep Everything Coming Up Roses

• Rose plants are graded according to standards set by the American Nursery & Landscape Association. A #1 rose is the highest quality and will give you the best show the first summer. You’ll find the grades on the rose packaging. • Avoid roses with dry-looking, shriveled canes. • Soak roots overnight before planting. If you can’t plant immediately, keep packing moist around the roots until planting time. • Roses need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive. • Fill hole with water, let it drain and then fill again. If the hole hasn’t drained completely in 24 hours, the easiest solutions are to plant elsewhere or grow roses in pots or raised beds. • Mix the soil dug out of the hole with equal amounts of compost or ground bark. Place some of the mixture in the bottom of the hole, creating a coneshaped mound. • Examine the rose carefully. Prune off damaged or dead roots. Spread the roots of the rose-the rose should be planted at about the same level it was grown in the field (you’ll see a color change on the stem) and with the bud union (the swollen part of the stem) aboveground. In colder climates, plant several inches deeper so the bud union is covered with soil. • Fill with soil and create a watering basin around the plant. Water well. • Mulch the rose with compost or ground bark. Pile the mulch up high enough to cover the canes several inches above the bud union.

The Empire State Building is topped by a mooring mast for dirigibles. However, only one such ship ever docked there. That took place on September 16, 1931. The idea was later scrapped because of safety concerns.

I read about Rainbow Rowell’s “Eleanor & Park” in your column a while back, and now I hear it’s going to be a movie. I’m so happy to hear this, because I loved the book. Will she be writing the screenplay for the movie as well? — Staci R., via email Rainbow has been tapped to write the screenplay for her first movie, and she’s thrilled for the opportunity. I asked Rainbow how it all came about, and who she sees in the parts of Eleanor and Park. “I’d been talking to DreamWorks for a few months about it. I was nervous at first because the book is so much in my control, but the studio and producer Carla Hacken seem really dedicated to bringing the book to life. I’m excited.” As for who should play the teenage sweethearts, Rainbow is up for anything. “It’s hard to imagine established actors in the roles, because there just aren’t that many starring roles for a chubby redhead and a 16-year-old Korean boy, which makes it all the more exciting.” *** Thank you for the update on Sharon Lawrence. She’s been one of my favorite actresses since “NYPD Blue.” Will she be in a series on a regular basis anytime soon? — Denise K., via email Amazon.com recently gave the green light to Chris Carter’s (writer/creator of “The X-Files”) latest supernatural drama, called “The After,” which follows eight strangers who are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies expla-

I dreamed about my Mom last night. She was sitting in her I have accomplished much in my lifetime- including higher education and an awesome career. I continue to find my self single. I desire a life time which includes marital partner. Please give any possible insights? Anonymous. Your grandmother’s spirit; your grandfather’s spirit; your spirit teachers; spirit guides each step forward here for you; they are filling your spiritual path with unconditional love and with the white light in order to assist you with their truth and understanding for the truth you are currently seeking. Your grand mother’s spirit says because of her unconditional love for you and your unconditional love for her- she has chosen to act as spokes person for the group of spirit loved ones who have come forward in order to assist you with your quandary. Firstly, she indicates you need to step back in your thinking and more importantly within your self conception. She continues by relaying...not only are you focusing on being single...you are allowing yourself to focus upon the concept of remaining single for an entire lifetime. By doing so...you are allowing yourself to not only remain where you are currently at- you are reinforcing your remaining single and creating what you are resisting. Secondly, she suggests, you allow for...making room for the concept of being in a life long marital relationship. This equates to making this choice and to allow your self to move out of your current thoughts for desiring to never be hurt again. Thirdly, she continues by relaying, you continue to keep the relationship you tell your self and others you longer desirealive...by...comparing all the attributes which belong to all of your current possible suitors/contenders to his attributes and lack of them. This keeps him alive in your heart and keeps the possibility of any other to walk with you for a life time. She relays...because you are doing this...he is not only consuming your thoughts...he is also consuming the space for another within your heart. Fourthly, she relays, you need to halt the opinions of others around you and/or your need for their opinions...in order to allow the one you would choose for your self to walk a lifetime with you. She reminds you...you are usually fully aware in advance whether you would choose to make a life long commitment with a potential partner before you consider to date them-or not. Fifthly, she relays, you need to consider, allowing those you date, your expected outcome(s)...in order to do this...you need to knowingly allow your self to know the same possibility/criteria. This means aligning your concept of self with your desired possibilities/ outcome(s). She reminds you, even if you discover you desire to be single, ( when others around you are marriage minded and they are attempting to place their goals and values for youupon you ). She relays, if this is your valid possibility...you no longer need to create the illusion of...the “right person” is just not out there for me. Sixthly, she relays, I only desire your happiness and contentment...the same as I validly did while I walked upon the earth with you. Finally she relays...this is the only desire your grandfather and spirit guides and teachers desire for you...your chosen Highest and Best...which you allow your self to create via your choices made out of free will. Your grandmother’s spirit; your grandfather’s spirit; your spirit guides; and your spirit teachers each step back now...and...at the same time remaining here for you... awaiting your requests... out of your free will... for their assistance. They are filling your spiritual path with the white light and with their unconditional love in order to assist you with their truth and understanding for the truth you are currently seeking.

Breakfast In Bed on Mother’s Day Pssst. Mother’s Day is coming on May 11. With busy spring schedules on family calendars, it’s not too early to begin preparations to pamper Mom. Why not start her day by serving her a memorable breakfast in bed? Find a large tray to hold her breakfast and other thoughtful items. (If you don’t have a tray, a large and sturdy rimmed cookie sheet also works.) Think of the tray as an empty canvas that your kids will fill with tasty food, special mementos and mom’s favorite things. Like tablescaping a dining-room table with pretty objects and floral bouquets for a fancy meal, start collecting special objects now to decorate the tray. Call it trayscaping — anything and everything that’s small and special to Mom, goes. Here

hood walks and hikes in the woods or along the seashore adds an artistic flare. If your child has a “nature nook” in her bedroom displaying her collections, she can put them “on loan” from her museum to decorate the tray. Twist a piece of soft birch bark to create a napkin ring. Set a pinecone, feathers and a small stack of flat stones here and there. Weave a mini paper banner with “Mom” printed or stamped in the center onto a stick or pussywillow branch. Anchor it in a jar of sand or pebbles. —For eats, pick up a fresh, flaky croissant or pastry from her favorite bakery. Spoon marmalade or jam into a tiny dish and set it to the side. Or, use a real clam seashell collected at the beach as an eye-catching container. —Serve Mom’s favorite juice in one of the kids’ baby cups, all shined and polished. On Mother’s Day morning, present the tray and play her favorite CD, or make her a mix with a personalized play list typed on a colorful label. “Frame” a photo of the family by fitting the print inside the clear plastic case.

Tulipsare not actually Dutch in origin - both the flower and the

name are from the Ottoman Empire. It is indigenous to Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, and other areas in Central Asia. The name has Turkish origins, tracing from the word for “gauze”, and is similar to the Turkish word for “turban”. It’s unclear exactly how the flower was brought to Western Europe, but it was during the 1500s, most likely by a Spanish ambassador to Turkey. It was studied and cultivated extensively in the later part of the century, primarily in The Netherlands. During the 1600s, the popularity of the tulip skyrocketed - the bulbs were even used as a form of currency for awhile. Wild tulip in the steppes of Kazakhstan

Gershwin’s Greatest Hits Commencement Eve Pops 2014

Fri., May 16 at 7:30 p.m. King Concert Hall, SUNY Fredonia

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

April 28, 2014

The Village of Forestville is getting a temporary bailout, but leaders in the village still have a great deal of work to do. The Chautauqua County Legislature recently approved a plan that will provide a 5-year, $150,000 loan to the Village. Because of that loan, a tax increase that had previously been projected at over 445-percent will be dramatically reduced. The tax rate in Forestville will still likely be doubled in the coming year, but it is a significantly smaller hit than residents would have taken if the County had failed to step in. The loan is secured, since failure to pay it will result in Forestville losing sales tax revenue from the County. Forestville’s financial woes stem from debt accrued due to a waterline project and an emergency demolition project. The County financial aid package, which was overwhelmingly approved by lawmakers from all corners of the county, also requires the village to seek grant funds for a study to determine the feasibility of dissolving the village. A dissolution plan in Forestville was rejected by residents last year, and dissolving a municipal entity is not an easy process. Never-the-less, the village of Forestville needs to seriously consider the option. We have long held the opinion that there are far too many layers of government in Chautauqua County. As an organization, we are squarely in favor of reducing those layers of government by merging or dissolving municipal entities, so that we have fewer taxing jurisdictions. These steps can go a long way towards reducing the overall property tax burden in Chautauqua County. Sharing services is just one step in that path. Consolidating governmental entities is a stronger step toward reducing the tax burden for business and home owners. We commend the County Legislature for assisting a local government in a time of dire need, and for doing it in a way that makes sense for all taxpayers in the county. We urge the Village of Forestville to move forward now with a dissolution plan. This is a necessary next step as that municipal government works to get its financial house in order.

Experience the songwriting genius of George and Ira Gershwin as our Great American Songbook Series continues. What Would Ali Do? So there is this kid at my son’s nursery school — we’ll call him Gaston — who apparently menaced my son one day. I say “menace” because I am tired of this whole “antibullying” crusade. Look, there comes a time in life where you encounter bullies. You can never eradicate them, because people have issues. You just have to deal with them. Anyway, so this kid menaced my son in some way. My wife wants me to do something. First things first: I am not a fan of the Mike Brady Doctrine that states you can always reason with people. Sometimes you need to be a bit more blunt; sometimes you need to trade hands when you’re faced with attack, and sometimes you need to run out the back of the dorm at Widener University because you face certain doom if you go out the front door by that huge dude who was overserved and thinks you called him a name. But my kid was 3. “What am I supposed to do? Teach him Marine tactics? Tell him to punch Gaston in the trachea? He’s 3.” “Well do something ...,” she said, and before doing so, I waited for the sure-to-come passive-aggressive comment that was to follow. “... for once.” So, as is often the case, I looked to the world of sports to provide an escape. It was time to introduce my kid to Ali. It was time to teach him that sometimes humility is not the best way out of a situation because it’s kind of fun to psyche yourself up while messing with other people’s minds. To wit: 5. “I am the straw that stirs

the drink.” Reggie Jackson rolls into New York, gets drunk with a reporter and puts forth himself as THE man on the Yankees, shoving it in the face of Thurman Munson and Billy Martin. Jackson sets himself up for the chance to become Mr. October when he delivers the World Series title after hitting four home runs in a row in October 1977 over the course of two games. Classic. 4. “I personally guarantee it.” Joe Namath’s Super Bowl III brag enraged the Baltimore Colts’ Bubba Smith so much that it affected his performance on the field. You can’t fight with too much rage, and Namath — a crossdressing quarterback from Alabama with a gun for an arm — knew whose buttons to push. 3. “Pain.” Clubber Lang’s prediction for the fight not only got him the title in “Rocky 3,” it killed Rocky’s manager and almost landed him Talia Shire. And that brings us to the top two, as performed by two people in the Montessori parking lot in full view of the Gaston family, who thought they witnessed pure crazy in action and wanted no part of it. “What are you?” 1. “I AM THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES, AND I CANNOT POSSIBLY BE BEAT!” “And if someone even dreams of whooping you?” 2. “THEY BETTER WAKE UP AND APOLOGIZE!” Rumble, young man, rumble. Postscript: Maybe the plan worked too well ... now my kid “play dates” with Gaston. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. After leaving Southampton on April 10, 1912, Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland before heading westwards towards New York. On April 14, 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles (600 km) south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship’s time; GMT- 3). The glancing collision caused Titanic’s hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. A disproportionate number of men – over 90% of those in Second Class – were left aboard due to a “women and children first” protocol followed by the officers loading the lifeboats. Just before 2:20 a.m Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. She carried 2,224 people. Due to outdated maritime safety regulations, she carried only enough lifeboats for 1,178 people – a third of her total passenger and crew capacity. The sinking caused the deaths of 1,514. The 710 survivors were taken aboard from the lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia a few hours later.
