Hospitalized Vets Need Holiday Cheer If your veterans service group is planning to make a “Santa” visit to the ward of a local veterans hospital, here is your to-do list to make the process go smoothly. —Corral your crew and get commitments for time and specific tasks. —Contact Volunteer Services at the medical center and ask if they’d like you to be responsible for a holiday party for a whole ward, or for a list of veterans who have no local family. Set a time and date. Noon-ish for a pizza party is ideal. —Locate a real Santa costume and decide who’s going to wear it. —Your shopping list: service baseball caps (approach recruiters to get those), small boxes of candy (ask nursing staff if it has to be sugar-free for some), playing cards, water bottles, mechanical pencils and puzzle books, small desk calendars — and anything else you can think of. Don’t forget the women veterans, who might like a comb and brush set or bright
slipper socks. —Boxes and tissue paper for the above, as well as wrapping paper and bows. Have a holiday card for each veteran. —Set a date for your wrapping party. Have everyone on your crew bring several rolls of gift wrap, tape and scissors. Be sure everyone signs every holiday card. —If your budget allows, consider giving each veteran a small ($5-$10) gift coupon to the canteen. —Ask store managers for donations of items for your gift boxes. —Arrange for the pizzas (and sodas, if allowed) to be delivered at the time of your party. Be sure who is providing plates, cups and napkins, and paying for the pizza delivery. If gifts aren’t possible, remember that what the veterans want most is your presence and your time. HOLLYWOOD — Guess Jennifer Aniston loved being a horrible boss so much, she’s making “Horrible Bosses 2.” Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx are back, but Colin Farrell and Donald Sutherland will not return. Two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine will fill the void as bosses. Also in the works for Jenn is “She’s Funny That Way” (also known as “Squirrels to the Nuts”) with Owen Wilson, Tatum O’Neal, Cybill Shepard and Richard Lewis. It’s directed by “The Last Picture Show” director Peter Bogdanovich, who wrote the screenplay with his exwife, Louise Stratton, in 2005. Tom Cruise’s next film, “Edge of Tomorrow,” which pits him against aliens, will be out in June. He’s currently preparing “Go Like Hell,” about automotive legend Carroll Shelby. It will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who guided Cruise through “Oblivion,” which cost $120 million and grossed $286 million. Matt Damon postponed his directorial debut to be directed by Christopher Nolan (who gave us the “Batman” trilogy) in “Interstellar,” with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chas-
tain, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Topher Grace and Casey Affleck. The story involves wormholes, time travel and alternate dimensions. Matt’s last film, “Elysium,” also sci-fi, cost $115 million and grossed $281 million.
Jennifer Anniston Damon will next appear onscreen in George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s “The Monuments Men,” coming Feb. 7. “Entourage” fans rejoice! Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Adrien Grenier, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven are set for the movie version of “Entourage,” shooting in January. Jeremy Piven asked for and got more money than the others, and when they found out, they refused to sign until they got bigger paychecks.
*** Universal Studios didn’t learn anything from the reboot of “Ironside,” which was canceled after four episodes. It is still rebooting several vintage series. First, big-screen versions of “The Rockford Files” (1974-80), starring Vince Vaughn (who’s also producing), and the Robert Wagner series “It Takes a Thief” (196870). “White Collar,” on USA, is a rip-off of “Thief,” with Matt Bomer playing a thief who works for the FBI instead of the CIA, as Wagner’s character did. The 1980s series “Remington Steele” gets cut from an hour dramedy to a half-hour comedy, without Pierce Brosnan or Stephanie Zimbalist; and NBC has guaranteed a full season of the new “Murder She Wrote,” which ran for 12 years on CBS with Angela Lansbury (1984-96). Lansbury was nominated all 12 years for an Emmy but never won. She’s getting an honorary Oscar on Nov. 16. Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer plays a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth who self-publishes her first novel. You can bet she won’t live in Cabot Cove or be named Jessica Fletcher. Self-publishing her own murder mysteries ... what a novel idea!

PICKS OF THE WEEK Red 2 (R) — A handful of renegade CIA retirees go back into action to kill bad dudes and recover a nuclear weapon. The aging, but still deadly, ensemble includes Bruce Willis (tough guy and hero), John Malkovich (the Mad-Dog Murdoch of the crew) and Helen Mirren (elegant and sophisticated, even when operating an automatic weapon). Mary-Louise Parker rounds out the cast as Bruce’s civilian girlfriend. While the explosions are big and bright, this film has an acute case of sequel-itis. Willis often looks bored. The jokes don’t land the way they did in the prequel. If you truly enjoyed the first round, then go ahead and rent this as a follow-up. Jobs (PG-13) — Steve Jobs had an undeniably dramatic and intriguing life. From his early years, to the launch of Apple Computers, all the way up to his triumphant return to the company he built and then lost. Ashton Kutcher clearly put in the research for his role as Jobs. Josh Gad — a more comedic type — does a great job of depicting Steve Wozniak, the techie who built the first Apple motherboard, and a companion to the often antisocial Jobs. Sadly, the film never rises above the point of worshipping Steve Jobs. The tone of the movie is hard to pin down — I thought I was watching a parody. People respond to every word Jobs utters with bated breath, just on the edge of applauding nothing. Even when the movie shows his darker side, it’s feels more obligatory than organic. Knightriders (Blu-ray) — This 1981 low-budget treasure finally makes it to BluRay. See, there’s this radical
roadshow going through small-town America — a Renaissance Fair bloodsport on wheels. The film tells the oh-so-wonderful story of men in medieval armor who ride around on dirtbikes and fight with swords and flails. Ed Harris turns in a swell performance as the gang’s delusional leader — his character takes the knight stuff a little too seriously, while all of the other performers just want Knightriders to achieve the
“Helen Mirren in “Red 2” same commercial success as Monster Trucks. George A. Romero (the father of the modern zombie film) directed this little ditty and promptly went back to making monster flicks. DOG OF THE WEEK Getaway (PG-13) — Ethan Hawke plays a racecar driver who must perform a high-octane crime spree — or they’ll kill his wife. Somewhere along the way, a teenage runaway (Selena Gomez) gets into the passenger seat. One would think that a movie that presses on the gas pedal and never lets up would be an exhilarating experience. It’s actually quite dull and exhausting. Guard Your Identity We know we should be aware of identity theft, but not all of us take steps to be safe. So says a news release put out by Experian, one of the big three credit-reporting agencies. A survey done by Experian showed that: • Most of us (93 percent) know that identity theft is a big problem. A smaller number (61 percent) know it would not be hard for someone to steal their identity, and 67 percent are concerned it might happen to them. • While the vast majority do secure their digital information, 55 percent don’t always check to see if a website is secure when shopping online. (Look for the https in the site’s address.) Worse, 63 percent don’t have a separate password for each online account. Translation: We know what we should be doing to stay protected online, but we don’t always do it. • When we shop online, 57 percent of us don’t always type in the name of the site we’re going to. Instead we click on links, opening us to the risk that we’re going to a fraudulent site that only looks like our destination site — a site that’s designed to take our personal information.
• Computers and going online aren’t our only downfalls. Nearly half of us never use a password to lock our smartphone or tablet. Identity thieves can use the information they find in a stolen phone or tablet, as well as run up bills on our accounts. • Only one in three of us stays secure on social-networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, willingly giving too much information online: date of birth, email address or educational background. Identity thieves can use that information. The big item — our Social Security number — isn’t guarded at all times. We willingly put it on medical forms (where do those forms end up?) or job applications (they don’t need it unless you’re hired), and we even carry the card in our wallet where it can be stolen and sold. During the holidays it’s especially important to safeguard personal information. Thieves will be on the lookout for distracted shoppers who aren’t vigilant about walking with an open purse, stumble onto fraudulent websites for online shopping or use unsecured mobile phones to shop. A Monkey Business facilitator, Nancy Daley, says cancer’s impact on young families is on the rise, and when it comes through the door unexpectedly and a parent becomes ill, it isn’t uncommon for children to struggle in school and act out in the home. Along with seeking family support in your community, Nancy gives several tips that are important for helping children. 1. Talk to your children regularly in natural situations, like driving to piano lessons or while preparing a meal. Find time for honest conversation, and try to answer all their questions. 2. Explain the diagnosis as clearly as possible. Outside resources in your community may be available to help. 3. Give your children tools for talking to their friends at school about their parent’s SUNDAY cancer. Help them decide Townsend St., who needs •to know, and who does not need to know. SCORPIO: Passion and romance may be first in line for the seventeenth under the illumination
of the seventeenth’s Full Moon; this is possible to carry over through the eighteenth. Examine all thoughts on the eighteenth through the twentieth prior to placing them forward in the form of communication or action. Romance may be apparent from the twentieth through the twenty second; this may be with a current or new partner. Emotions may run high on the twenty third, consider letting go of the need to control, the choice of possibility may be optimal.
SAGITTARIUS: Energies created by the seventeenth’s Full Moon may effect your emotions today through the nineteenth; consider how actions and words may be effecting those around you. Consider using kindness and gentleness with all others on the eighteenth through the twentieth; self responsibility is indicated. Romance is highlighted on the twentieth through the twenty second- keep in mind a current partner, prior to temporarily placing another where they do not belong. The twenty third allows for fun and frolic after priorities have been completed. CAPRICORN: Consider the utilization of flexibility on the seventeenth under the glow of the
Taurus Full Moon; this may be apparent through the nineteenth. The need to be right and/or to have your own way is not indicated for the eighteenth through the twentieth. WHITE HOUSE TRIVIA • George Washington is the only president never to have slept in the White House. • Construction began in 1792, and the home first was occupied by John Adams and his wife, Abigail, in 1800. On Aug. 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops burned the White House in retaliation for an earlier burning of Canadian government buildings in York, Ontario, by the United States. James Monroe moved into the rebuilt White House in 1817. • Running water was piped into the residence in 1833, a central heating system was installed in 1837, and electricity lit up the home beginning in 1891. • Today, the home’s square footage is about 55,000. It features six levels, eight staircases, three elevators, 28 fireplaces and 132 rooms, including 35 bathrooms. • It takes 570 gallons of white paint to cover the exterior. • Seventeen White House weddings have been documented. The first, in 1812, was for the sister of first lady Dolley Madison. The most recent, in 1994, was for the brother of first lady Hillary Clinton. • Grover Cleveland became the only president married in the White House when he wed Frances Folsom in the Blue Room in 1886.
• The property features a tennis court, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a beauty salon, a physician’s office, a florist’s shop, a swimming pool and a golf putting green. Dwight Eisenhower had the first putting green installed. Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, were avid bowlers. A jogging track was added around the driveway of the South grounds during Bill Clinton’s first term.

THE ODDS ARE 30-1
• The White House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
• The Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington, obtained in 1800, is the mansion’s oldest furnishing.
Assume you’re declarer in four spades, playing rubber bridge. If you make your contract, you score 820 points; if you go down one, you lose 100 points. It is therefore clear that if you are presented with an opportunity to score an overtrick, you should not grasp that opportunity if it might jeopardize the contract. It would be downright foolish to run the risk of suffering a 920-point loss for the sake of gaining an extra 30 points. Now let’s apply this prin-
ciple to today’s hand. You win West’s heart lead with dummy’s ace and play a low trump to the ace, on which West produces the jack. If you continue with the king of trumps, hoping West started with the Q-J doubleton — in which case you’d finish with 11 tricks — you wind up down one, losing two trump tricks and two diamonds. But that would be the wrong way to proceed. Once West’s jack appears, it is far better to play safe by leading a low spade toward dummy’s ten at trick three. This provides you with 100 percent protection against the possibility of losing more than one trump trick. In the actual deal, East wins the ten with the queen, but his 9-7 of trumps later succumb to your K-8-4 when you lead a trump from dummy. It is true that the recommended play gives up all chance of scoring an overtrick (if West has the Q-J alone), but this is one of those luxuries you can easily afford to do without. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

If I had my life to live over I’d dare to make more mistakes next time. I’d relax, I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and less beans... If I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have... I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies. --Dadine Stair

The day after Thanksgiving is called “Black Friday.” The term “Black Friday” originated in 1960 in Philadelphia, a city which had the most malls in the U.S. at the time. The expression started because of the disruptive vehicular and pedestrian foot traffic caused by hoards of shoppers, but retailers later changed the meaning to a more positive connotation about store profits going them out of the red and into the black. This day is considered to be the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season.

Like people, animals’ bodies become accustomed to the climate they live in. It’s usually recommended that a dog meant to live outside should be kept outside much of the time. This doesn’t mean, though, that your dog must stay out constantly during periods of extreme cold or very bad weather. Please do bring your dog in when it’s not fit outside for man nor beast! 14 DFW / 12 SC

1. In 1945 a computer at Harvard malfunctioned, and Grace Hopper, who was working on the computer, investigated and found a moth in one of the circuits. Ever since, when something goes wrong with a computer, it is said to have a bug in it.
HOW TO WINTERIZE YOUR CAR
1. Don’t put off a 30,000 mile full service. 2. Flush the cooling system and replace coolant. 3. Replace windshield wiper blades. Fill windshield washer fluid reservoir (do not use water, as it will freeze). 4. Have the battery tested and serviced. Replace if necessary (if it is more than 4 1/2 years old). 5. Use a tire gauge to check tire pressure. Air contracts with cold and the tires may become low as the temperature drops. 6. Make sure spare tire has proper inflation and proper tire-changing equipment is in the trunk. 7. Make sure tires are in good condition. If you are unsure what this means, ask a mechanic (in a shop that doesn’t sell tires) for an opinion. 8. Check all lights, heater and defroster. 9. Keep your gas tank as full as possible in order to prevent moisture from freezing in the gas lines. 10. Get a brake check and replace if necessary. 11. Keep emergency winter kit in trunk. This should include: Blanket, ice scraper, extra boots/gloves, small snow shovel and kitty litter (for traction in the snow).

The Icee (also called a Slurpee, Slush, or Mr. Misty) was invented in the late 1950s, by Omar Knedlik. The first flavor available was root beer.
The Scoop on Snow Shoveling Safety November 1999 Jocey Mathern, Program Assistant Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D., L.R.D., Food and Nutrition Specialist It happens every winter in the Midwest ... snow falls, usually leaving piles of the stuff to clear from your sidewalks and driveway. Consider the following before you grab your shovel after a major snowfall.
The good news is that 15 minutes of snow shoveling counts as moderate physical activity according to the 1996 Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health. We all should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity of some kind on most days of the week. Brisk walking or social dancing are other ways to fit in moderate physical activity during cold winter months. The bad news is that researchers have reported an increase in the number of fatal heart attacks among snow shovelers after heavy snowfalls. This rise may be due to the sudden demand that shoveling places on an individual’s heart. Snow shoveling may cause a quick increase in heart rate and blood pressure. One study determined that after only two minutes of shoveling, sedentary mens’ heart rates rose to levels higher than those normally recommended during aerobic exercise. Shoveling may be vigorous activity even for healthy college-aged students. A study performed by researchers at North Dakota State University determined that, based on heart rate, shoveling was a moderately intense activity for college-aged subjects most of the time but was vigorous activity during about one-third of their shoveling time of 14 minutes. Shoveling can be made more difficult by the weather. Cold air makes it harder to work and breathe, which adds some extra strain on the body. There also is the risk for hypothermia, a decrease in body temperature, if one is not dressed correctly for the weather conditions.
Who should think twice about shoveling snow? Those most at risk for a heart attack include: • Anyone who has already had a heart attack. • Individuals with a history of heart disease. • Those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels. • Smokers. • Individuals leading a sedentary lifestyle.
Should you rush out and buy a snow blower? Not necessarily. Not everyone who shovels snow is going to have a heart attack. Snow shoveling can be good exercise when performed correctly and with safety in mind. Also consider back safety when shoveling snow. Even if you exercise regularly and are not at risk for heart disease, shoveling improperly could lead to a strained back. If you’ve been inactive for months and have certain risk factors, use some common sense before taking on the task of snow shoveling.
