Dimples are caused by an abnormally short facial muscle. The zygomaticus major, a facial muscle, is attached to the skin of your cheeks. Dimples appear when the muscle pulls hard enough on your cheeks to cause visible indentations on your face. This usually occurs when we speak or smile, when the muscle is contracting.

The Girl Scouts of Western New York have announced it is accepting nominations through March 30 for its 2018 Women of Distinction Awards. Women of Distinction is an annual dinner fundraising event presented by Girl Scouts of Western New York. This event celebrates outstanding Western New York women who embody the Girl Scout values of courage, confidence and character in their professional and civic lives and therefore are role models for today’s girls. Honorees come from many different walks of life and align with Girl Scouts goal of developing strong girls in all sectors of society. Each year the Girl Scouts of Western New York call upon the public to help identify these women who exemplify excellence through their professional achievements as well as their volunteerism. Those selected to be 2018 Women of Distinction will develop a mentoring relationship with a Girl Scout, meeting with her to share insights and advice. The Girl Scout will then present the recipient with her award during a ceremony on Sept. 20. To qualify, nominees must live or work in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans or Wyoming counties. She does not need to have been a Girl Scout, and anyone in the community can nominate someone for a Woman of Distinction Award. Sponsors help make the 2018 Women of Distinction Awards program possible, and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information about the Women of Distinction Awards, the award guidelines and nomination form, or sponsorship opportunities, visit www.gswny.org.

PLUS MANY MORE NEW AND QUALITY PRE-OWNED VEHICLES TO CHOOSE FROM! STONEHENGE

It is perhaps the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. It was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument, built about 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. Today, along with Avebury, it forms the heart of a World Heritage Site, with a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments.

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier Jamestown Community College in partnership with the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier and Dream It Do It Western New York has launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP). AMP has been developed and deployed in response to employer demand for a skilled workforce. The Advanced Manufacturing Partnerships (AMP) is an innovative approach to meeting the workforce needs of employers in the region. The AMP program at Jamestown Community College offers participating high school students a fully funded education, paid work experience, and a SUNY JCC certificate. The focus ofAMPfor 2018-2019is the Industrial Equipment Technology (IET)certificate. Employers have identified a need for industrial maintenance technicians. The IET certificate was built to address this growing need of employers. The goal is to launch the program simultaneously at the JCC Jamestown and JCC Olean campuses in the fall of 2018 with a total of 30 students. We appreciate JCC taking an innovative approach to addressing a high demand occupational need in the community. Maintenance of equipment and facilities is a highly skilled, high tech occupation that is in significant demand. People in these job positions are uniquely skilled and many of them are retiring. The AMP program provides a great opportunity for students to enter an excellent career and for employers to meet their workforce needs. This is a great opportunity for employers to develop skilled industrial maintenance workers. Employer participation in this program is essential to its success. Employers participating will provide mentoring, part-time employment and scholarship support. Participating employers will assist in the student selection process. In return participating employers get a highly skilled employee who through this process has become acquainted with the employer’s workplace, co-workers, policies, culture and expectations. Reach out today to participate by contacting Jeff Teluk at 338-1324 or email JeffTeluk@mail.sunyjcc.edu.

GOWANDA SPORTS REPORT By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent Gateway Park on Palmer Street will be a busy place this spring and summer, as Little League Baseball will be using the ball field on Wednesday and Friday nights with the latter night hosting T-ball for the third consecutive year. Gowanda Recreation will host a co-ed youth soccer program for students in grades K-9 on five consecutive Monday nights beginning May 7. Each session will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to participate in this program thanks to a generous monetary donation made by the Gowanda Kiwanis Club. The local recreation department will also sponsor men's recreational softball on Tuesday nights beginning May 22. There is no cost to participate in the softball program. Call the Recreation Director at 532-4053 for information on Gateway Park programs. Gateway Park, through the ongoing work by the Gowanda Area Development Corporation (GARC), is in the process of purchasing two port-a-pots until a permanent structure can be built on site with restrooms. Additional equipment for the play structure is also on the agenda in time for summer. Constructing a second ball field plus a new basketball court is the next phase for Gateway Park. The Hilbert College men's basketball team just wrapped up a very successful season. The Hawks head coach Rob deGrandpre won the Allegany Mountain League "Coach of the Year" award. Collins resident and 1977 Gowanda Central School graduate Jack Gaylord, Jr. was a first-year coach on the Hilbert staff. All spring sports are now officially underway at Gowanda Central School. The varsity boys track team will feature several quality athletes this season. Junior Austin Jankowski should be one of the top high hurdlers in the Southern Tier. He just missed

qualifying for the Section VI meet as a sophomore last year. Jankowski will also score points in high jump and triple jump. Two first year seniors Nate Brawdy and AFS student Ture Hassler will give the Panthers much needed help in the weights, middle distance, sprints and jumping events. Sophomore Dominik Rodriguez should be much improved in both the pole vault and 400 intermediate hurdles. Senior Kiefer Austin will be called upon to garner points in the long and high jump, sprints and high hurdles. Sophomore Christian Cook will be the Panthers top long distance runner this spring. The varsity boys and girls track and field teams will host Eden in a non-league meet on Friday, April 13. The first event begins at 4:30 p.m. The Gowanda Central School varsity baseball team will be very young this year but does return senior Andrew Kruszka. THE HISTORY OF GOWANDA TRACK AND FIELD

By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent Although it still looks like winter outside, spring sports at Gowanda Central School began pre-season practice on March 5 for the 2018 season. And the Panthers will be competing in baseball, softball, track and field, lacrosse and trap shooting. Lacrosse is by far one of the oldest sports played in North America. However, Gowanda Central School did not offer the sport to its students until the spring of 1976. The oldest spring sport at Gowanda High School is boys track and field. That sport has roots dating back to pre-1900. Team photos from the early years have been uncovered but only one notable individual school record. In the spring of 1932 at the Cattaraugus County championship meet in Salamanca, Gowanda’s Paul Farley won the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.9 seconds. He later received a medal for his accomplishment with the new school record time of 9.9 inscribed into it. But as years went by, school and county track records that were set by using handheld stopwatches at the high school level were considered somewhat flawed until technology was dramatically improved during the late 1970s. For example, in the 100-yard dash event throughout the handheld stopwatch era, there could be a discrepancy between the official timers that could differ by as much as 0.3 second. However, people familiar with Farley during that time period remembered what an exceptional athlete he was. One eyewitness account had Farley pole vaulting over 10 feet (an exceptional height during that time period) and landing in a sawdust pit (there were no foam or soft landing mats like today) during the 1932 season. Just imagine what Farley could have done today with improved facilities such as all-weather track surfaces for every meet and equipment that includes top of line running and training shoes, fiberglass poles and soft landing pits. There is also the fact that today’s high school track athlete has a better diet, improved coaching and updated techniques for each event. The Gowanda High School track and field program has produced many exceptional athletes over the past 120 years of competition. And although the school records that were set in track and field but never officially recorded prior to 1941 would most likely have been broken, Farley’s 100-yard dash feat performed in 1932 or 86 years ago remains on the school record board. And Farley himself is considered a Gowanda high school track and field legend.

ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER I was married prior to this dream. I dreamed I was at my wedding. My mother’s father who is no longer in body was in attendance as were many others who did not receive an invitation. I was communicating with my mother and her two sisters at a table. Grandpa came over and held my hand, rubbing his hand over the top of mine, and smiled at me only. He looked younger than I remembered him. I do not remember being invited either. Any assistance is appreciated? Anonymous. Your spirit teachers and spirit guides each step forward now in order to assist you with your above inquiry. They are each filling you and your spiritual path with the white light and their unconditional love in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth which you are currently seeking for your self and your spiritual path. Firstly, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, your grandfather’s spirit, your grandmother’s spirit, and your great aunt’s spirit are here now communicating with me for you. Your grandfather’s spirit is reminding you, of course he and many of the others from the spirit side of life, had not been officially invited because they are in spirit. Secondly, all of those in your dream are saying in unison, not being in body we are not limited by earthly protocol. Thirdly, they all relay, because you did not see us, via utilizing your earthly eyes, at your actual wedding, we came to you in your dream, so as to not frighten you, and to let you know we were at your actual wedding. Fourthly, they all relay, allowing you to know this also allows your mother and aunts to know this. Fifthly, your grandfather’s spirit relays, spirit may appear at age they feel most comfortable with once they leave their body and go to the spirit side of life. Sixth, your grandfather’s spirit relays, even though our time on earth seemed brief to you, he and you have known each other for eternity. Seventh, your grand mother’s spirit greets you and her living children; your great aunt’s spirit make a point of letting your mom know she greets her. Now they are each giving their temporary farewells and moving on, so to speak. Your spirit guides and spirit teachers each step back as it were; they are each filling your spiritual path with their unconditional love and the White Light in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth and understanding which you are currently seeking. VISIONS OF SPRING

As we hear the crickets chirping And the frog’s familiar call A sign of another spring To be welcomed one and all.

To see the birds arrive And to hear their melodies And watch as they build their nests Amongst the shrubs and trees. It is rather too soon to tell If mosquitoes will be the usual pest Or if many other insects will be When they arise from their nest. Soon we’ll hear the lawn mower's hum And sight of a new mown lawn As the birds and insects show At the very early crack of dawn. Soon we’ll face the summer’s heat And enjoy the cool summer’s eves. It’s time to shed those heavy clothes In exchange for T-shirts and short sleeves. Fireside Poetry By Old Andy Wingeier Sr.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED ON THE MOON

There are 12 people who have walked on the moon — all are Americans and all are men. They are: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin — who were the first two astronauts to leave their bootprints on the Moon. There were also Pete Conrad, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, David Scott, James Irwin, John Young, Charles Duke, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt. The first walk, by Armstrong and Aldrin, occurred in 1969. The last two, by Cernan and Schmitt, occurred in 1972. No person has been back for a visit since.

FORMER GOWANDA ATHLETE/COACH LOU SELAN TURNS 95

By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent (Editor’s Note: This story was published in the Aug. 18, 2017 edition of The Gowanda Press and felt it a fitting tribute for Lou “Looch” Selan, who passed away last week.) Lou “Looch” Selan will turn 95 years old later this month and a celebration is being planned to honor his achievements. My first recollection of Lou was that of a manager for the Slovenian Club fast pitch softball team in 1964. I was only eight years old but recall “Looch” as being an easy going person in the middle of those very competitive games. In fact, I still can still vision him as one of the peacekeepers that helped to diffuse a bench clearing brawl between his Slovenian Club team and the Gowanda State Hospital during a fast pitch playoff softball game at Thatcher Brook in 1965. I was too young to remember Lou as a catcher in both baseball and fast pitch softball for several town teams before and after World War II. But I had heard stories from former players such as Dick Rooney, Al Stuhlmiller and George Dispenza that Lou was solid behind the plate. I wasn't born when he and several of his former Gowanda High School football teammates formed the Gowanda Tigers upon returning from World War II in the fall of 1946. The Tigers were a semi-professional football team that competed against other towns that included Lackawanna, South Buffalo, Blasdell and North Tonawanda from 1946 through 1949. Lou was a contributing member to the Tigers that had an excellent record and won the 1948 Western New York title by defeating North Tonawanda 13-6 in the championship game. Years later, Buffalo Evening News columnist and Gowanda Central School graduate Chuck Korbar wrote a story with photos on a reunion for the Gowanda Tigers semi-pro football team. And there was Lou, who had helped to organize the event, front and center. In the spring of 1966, it was again a group of former Gowanda High School football players that joined together to bring Little League football to Gowanda. Lou, along with Vic Witherell, Henry Sprawka, Stan Burzak, Ed Mentley, William "Doc" Glazier, Dennis Tingue and Vic Vogtli, were several of the main players that put the wheels in motion. In September of 1966, Gowanda had two teams called the Jets and Packers that would compete for the first time in the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League. Lou was one of the original coaches for the Gowanda Jets. The following year, the league expanded and Lou, along with Vic Witherell and Art Palumbo, led the midget Jets to a division championship by defeating the rival Packers. In 1969, the Jets won Gowanda's first youth football playoff championship by defeating the Boston Patriots and Springville Colts. Lou stayed on as an assistant coach for several more years and was able to coach his son, Larry. But Lou was more than just a coach. “I couldn't tell you how many times ‘Looch’ gave me ride home from practice or to and from a game,” stated the late Rudy Rote when learning of Lou's induction into the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. “He was just a very generous person.” Which brings to mind the countless number of times that I have asked Lou and his beloved Slovenian Club for a donation to offset the cost of running the Gowanda Recreation Department or to place an advertisement in the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame banquet program. Not once in the past 14 years has he ever turned down any of my requests. On Sept. 30, 1995, Lou was honored along with several other outstanding athletes and coaches for their longevity and dedication to sports at the Gowanda Area All Sports Award Banquet. And on March 23, 2013, Lou was inducted into the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame. On Aug. 27, a large group consisting of family and friends will gather at the Slovenian Club, Lou's second home, to celebrate his 95th birthday. It will also be an opportunity to honor a local person who has given so much to his community for a very long time.

The Weekly Word

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” Luke 6:45

Our words expose what is in our hearts. Good or evil. Profanity is the heart throwing up. The heart is the core of the mind. Here’s a good test to take: 1. Great minds talk about ideas. 2. Average minds talk about events. 3. Small minds talk about people. What kind of a mind do you have? Your words will tell you. Talk about ideas. How you can make your family, marriage, community, business, school, church, and neighborhood better. The heart of a human can be a very dark place. If so, dark things will come out of our mouth. If our heart is pure and enlightened, great ideas will come out. God can purify our hearts by faith in His Son Jesus Christ. (Acts 15:9). Then good will start coming out of our mouths and not evil. Words affect everything.
