MAKE YOUR OWN CHICKEN POT PIE INGREDIENTS: CRUST 1 box refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box FILLING 1/3 cup butter or margarine 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 3/4 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup milk 2 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken or turkey 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
STEPS 1) Heat oven to 425°F. Make pie crusts as directed on box for Two-Crust Pie using 9-inch glass pie pan. 2) In 2-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until tender. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until well blended. Gradually stir in broth and milk, cooking and stirring until bubbly and thickened. 3) Stir in chicken and mixed vegetables. Remove from heat. Spoon chicken mixture into crust-lined pan. Top with second crust; seal edge and flute. Cut slits in several places in top crust. 4) Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown. During last 15 to 20 minutes of baking, cover crust edge with strips of foil to prevent excessive browning. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Summer preschool students at Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center’s Angola location enjoy their new playground. Students anticipated summer playground fun after watching their new playground being built in the Fall just in time for the winter cold. As soon as the weather broke and the ground dried up the kids were finally able to play on the slides, rock wall, in the sandbox and the ladybug. This playground is located at the William T. Hoag School in Angola and built to fit the preschool age group.
Modena pigeons originated from Modena Italy during the 1300’s. In the 1300’s the breed was used for competitive flying (kit flying).

WHO CREATED THE FIRST PIZZA THAT RESEMBLES PIZZA TODAY?
The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.
Gowanda Announces New Central Registration Efforts
District aims to simplify back-to-school for new families via appointment-only enrollment
GOWANDA – Streamlining student enrollment at the Gowanda Central Schools is the goal of the district’s new appointment-only Central Registration process. The 2018-2019 academic year is getting under way with some extra thought and attention put into how the district welcomes new families. Now available by appointment only, registration of new students is via the Central District Registrar office in the District Wing at 10674 Prospect St. Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call Carol Denny at (716) 532-3325, ext. 6018 to schedule an appointment or for more information. The key responsibility of the families is ensuring they bring the required documents and completed registration packet to their appointment, something Denny says is crucial. “Registration should be a fairly quick and painless process,” said Denny. “Especially if the parents come to their appointment with their packets completely filled out and bring with them all the required documents.” Parents should jumpstart the process by downloading and filling out a registration packet online at www.gowcsd.org, where there is also a
complete list of required documents the families must provide. (Navigate to the “Central Registration” button via the “Popular Links” section on the homepage of the district website to download and print the packet.) Please note: To ensure that your child can begin the 2018-2019 academic year at Gowanda on Sept. 4, 2018, the district recommends making an appointment by Aug. 24, 2018. Previously, families new to the district had to enroll their children at the separate elementary, middle and high school offices – occasionally a time-consuming, repetitive process, especially when they did not bring along the multiple documents required for registration.
Questionnaires, certificates, various technology and health forms are also included in the packets. Hard copies are also available at the Central District Registrar office; please call ahead so one is ready for you. “We’re really trying to simplify back-to-school for everyone,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson. “It makes things easier for the families while also helping our staff work more efficiently in the busy weeks leading up to the first day of school.”

LOOKING TO SAVE MONEY?
Those looking to rein in their spending may want to take inventory of their dining habits. The budgeting resource The Simple Dollar says the average American eats roughly 4.2 commercially prepared meals per week. This equates to around 18 meals eaten outside of the home in a given month. That can cost diners roughly $232 dollars per month or more. Budget-conscious diners looking to curtail their spending can be pickier about when they choose to dine out. Simply eating at home a few more times per month can add up to considerable savings.

FAREWELL TO A RECORDBREAKING JULY
Time to turn the calendar To the month of August Will it be wet and muddy? Or will it be dry as dust?
The hot weather helped some farmers Oh - how the corn did grow But some farmers found their supply Of water being very low Hoping August will be fair With what rain is needed Not like last year for water The Eden farmers pleaded Too bad the weather can’t be equal And treat us all the same But there again we must be content With Mother Nature’s game Sometimes we are the losers Chances of winning are far away Unless what seems impossible You may have a lucky day. Get physical in Silver Creek: Exercise classes open to the public
Aquacize is a longtime community favorite exercise class offered in Silver Creek through the Community Education division. Several health and wellness opportunities are planned this fall and registration is underway. The next session of Aquacize runs Sept. 11 through Dec. 13.
SILVER CREEK – Several opportunities to work on your fitness are available to the public this fall via the Community Education division of the Silver Creek Central School District. Pre-registration is necessary for all classes (with the exception of the “Walking the Halls” program) and ensures the classes will be held. A 15% discount applies to those age 65 and older. Sessions kick off beginning in late August and some extend through mid-December. Sit & Fit: Have fun while you stay fit. All ages can benefit from this light and easy class, which includes simple chair exercises and stretching to some fun music. Instructor Betty Bates will include the use of stretch bands and light weights if you choose to bring this equipment to class with you. Some meditation will conclude the class, which meets in Room 158 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting Sept. 11 and ending Dec. 13, with no class held Nov. 29 or Dec. 4. In 1935, highway officials gave local governments options when it came to painting centerlines. They could be either yellow, white, or black, depending on the color of the underlying pavement. By 1955, 49 states had adopted white. The lonely holdout, Oregon, preferred yellow. It wasn’t until 1971 the federal government mandated that centerlines now be painted yellow, with white stripes reserved for roads where traffic drove in the same direction. (Lines on the sides of roads didn't gain traction with officials until the mid-1950s. Before that, edge markings were prohibited. They were finally advocated in 1961, and then mandated in 1978.)
MONDAY & THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

On September 8, 2008, the Red Sox set a Major League record with their 456th consecutive homepark sellout. The previous record had been held by the Cleveland Indians, who sold out 455 games between June 12, 1995 and April 2, 2001. The streak began on May 15, 2003 against the Texas Rangers. The Red Sox are only the fourth team to sell out every home game of an entire season (the 1996 Colorado Rockies and the 2000 San Francisco Giants being the other two).
The streak ended in April 2013 at 820 (794 regular season games and an additional 26 in the post season.).
