POWER RECLINERS ADJUSTABLE HEADREST What is the most frequently stolen food on the planet?

Candy? Alcohol? Steak? According to multiple studies, up to 4% of the cheese put up for sale ends up stolen. The way stores display cheese, particularly the valuable imported kinds, are usually centrally located and well lit to keep thieves from darting off. While not completely understood, researchers indicate that cheese is relatively expensive, easy to conceal, and can be resold to other stores or restaurants. Black market cheese is big business.

DUNKIRK — Marty Sanden, age 74, of Dunkirk, died at home Sunday (June 17, 2018). Beloved husband of Rosie Sanden; father of Eric (Tia) and Emily Sanden, and grandfather of Jah, Tia and Vee Sanden. Arrangements by David J. Dengler, Larson-Timko Funeral Home.

WATER SKIING

Water skiing was invented in 1922 when Ralph Samuelson used a pair of boards as skis and a clothesline as a towrope on Lake Pepin in Lake City, Minnesota. Samuelson experimented with different positions on the skis for several days until July 2, 1922. Samuelson discovered that leaning backwards in the water with ski tips up and poking out of the water at the tip was the optimal method. His brother towed him and they reached a speed of 20 miles oper hour.

GOWANDA SPORTS REPORT By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent The Gowanda Merchants baseball team is off to a good start in the Men’s Senior Baseball League (MSBL) this season and has won their first three games. The team’s catcher, Justin Fish, has taken over the managerial duties from Dave Robbins this year. Robbins had been coaching the Merchants since 1971. “We are a much younger team this year,” commented third-year player Bret Ebling. “The league has relaxed the rules and we have several players under the age of 25.” The Merchants play their home games at Panther Field on Friday nights and Sunday mornings. What a change from when the team was first re-organized in 1971. Those Merchant teams played all of their games on Saturday, Sunday and holidays with their home diamond at Hillis Field. Gowanda Recreation continues to hold men’s (18 and over) slow pitch softball games at Gateway Park on Tuesday nights. The recreational games begin at 6 p.m. There is no cost to play. Call the Recreation Director at 532-4053 if you would like to play. Summer recreation at St. John Park will begin on Thursday, July 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The six-week program will run each weekday through Aug. 10. Registration will take place on Monday, June 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. John Park. Children must have completed kindergarten through eighth grade in order to

participate. There is no cost to attend this program except for the optional field trips. Swimming, recreational games, arts and crafts, talent show and much more are offered throughout the summer. Gateway Park will be host to a men’s slow pitch softball tournament on Saturday, June 30. The first game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. Call Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@aol.com to enter a team. School is out for the summer and the spring sports season is in the books. The GCS varsity girls’ lacrosse team reached the championship game in Class D but lost to Eden. It was a remarkable accomplishment as this was only the team’s second year of competition. The GCS varsity boys’ track and field team had five athletes qualify for the sectional meet. The Panthers had their best season in 25 years with defeating Olean for the first time in school history as the top highlight. High school fall sports officially begin with mandatory practices on Monday, Aug. 13. The Gowanda/Pine Valley varsity football team will be looking to rebound from a 2-7 season. Several lettermen return with a good influx of athletes from Pine Valley to boost both the varsity and junior varsity squads. The GCS boys cross country team should also be competitive this fall with several good distance runners inherited from the track team.

THE HISTORY OF GOWANDA SPORTS

By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent It was the first Sunday in May of 1971 and the opening game for the baseball teams in the Central League. It was also the first game for the Gowanda Merchants baseball team since they were booted out of the Central League for using illegal players at the close of the 1967 season. Dave Robbins, a former player for the Merchants in the early ‘60s and later and outfielder for the Gowanda State Hospital team, had gone out on his own to put the Gowanda Merchants back on the playing field. He secured sponsors, bought new red and grey uniforms and recruited a team, many who had most recently played for the nearby “Staters.” The Merchants would also return to Hillis Field — formerly known as the Gowanda Athletic Field — for their home games. But Robbins had one problem: many of the players he had recruited were still attending college or playing high school baseball. So he reached out to a pair of 43-year-old former town team players George Dispenza and Roy Stevens — plus 31-year-old former Merchant pitcher Ken Steklasa — to bridge the gap until the college kids returned. He also brought along his younger brother, Bob, who was just released from the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and former Gowanda State Hospital players Wayne Douglas, Tim “Rock” Witherell, Tom Newcomb and Robert “Robbie” Jimerson. Dan Elvin, who just finished his first year of college at Erie Community; Jim Vogtli, a top area slow pitch softball player; and left handed hitting Dennis Burek filled out the slim opening day roster. But at least the Gowanda Merchants were playing baseball again after a three-year hiatus. Gowanda traveled to Arcade for their first game in 1971 and lost by a few runs. Additional games were played with mixed results when the roster began to change. By Memorial Day weekend, Dispenza, Steklasa, Elvin and Vogtli had left the team. They were replaced by college players Denny Newcomb, Henry Huff Jr. and Kenny Hubacher. High school senior Dana Jolls and freshman Mark Benton were also added to the roster. Bob Burns Jr. and Gary “Pizza” Peters each played in a few games during the season while home on leave from the Vietnam War. The team’s scorekeeper was Tony Dinali. Once the roster was solidified, the Merchants began to put several winning streaks together against league opponents from West Falls, Colden, Springville, Mortons Corners, Warsaw, Orchard Park, Collins Center and Arcade. However, Holland proved to be their nemesis and defeated the Merchants in both games that season. The game in Gowanda under the lights became so heated that it precipitated a bench-clearing brawl. When the first season had ended, the Merchants finished second in their division but not good enough to qualify for the Buffalo Evening News sponsored all-around playoffs. However, the team played in a four-team consolation tournament called the Directors Cup and did very well. Four players (Dave and Bob Robbins, Tim Witherell and Denny Newcomb) made the all-star team. And the last official game of the 1971 season was a dramatic 11-10 come from behind win against Friendship on Labor Day in front of several hundred spectators at the Rushford Fair.

“So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.” - Ecclesiastes 2:9-11 What Money Does Not Bring: Money may be the husk of many things, but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; acquaintance, but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; days of happiness, but not peace and joy.—Henrik Ibsen Solomon had the means to get anything his heart desired. He wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. An excerpt is above. He lamented his emptiness and depression over 30 times in the book. Only God can satisfy.
