√ Have your furnace inspected. Hire an HVAC professional to test for leaks, check heating efficiency, and change the filter. They can also do a carbon monoxide check to ensure air safety. It’s also a good idea to stock up on extra air filters and change them every few months. √ Winterize air conditioning. If your home has central air conditioning, it may be necessary to cover your outdoor unit for winter. If you use window air conditioning units, remove them or cover to prevent air leaks. √ Test home safety devices. Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly.

DEAR OLD MOTHER’S PREDICTION
October is known for bright blue weather With dark clouds turning blue ones into gray We wished farewell to all good weather But was fine for remainder of the day Fall is time to dig and pick up taders Also squash and pumpkins from the vine And to hear remaining birds still singing With more days being fine We know the weather will be changing Also bad weather will be on its way We must be more thankful For every sun-filled day Time to prepare for winter Hopeful of no big storm Best to believe in readiness To stay comfortable and warm It may be a long hard winter With many stormy days to go Again we must face those winter days With more unwanted snow Dear Old Mom’s prediction Holds well to this very day Even though it has been many years Since she has passed away Fireside Poetry By Old Andy Wingeier Sr.

New student group puts focus on freshmen in Silver Creek
Members of the Class of 2022 at Silver Creek High School are embarking on a path of personal and academic success via the district’s new Knight Crew initiative, which seeks to help ninth-graders in many ways including setting goals and building relationships in and out of school.
SILVER CREEK – Developing character, setting goals and improving relationships were just a few of the topics discussed by dozens of freshmen during the first meeting of the Knight Crew at Silver Creek High School held recently (Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018) in the auditorium. Crew, an initiative of the district’s Counseling Department, entails small groups of students who meet twice a month with one adult in a caring, nurturing environment to support their academic and personal needs. The adult acts as a team leader/coach and connects with and advocates for the ninth-graders in a student-centered program. “Students need at least one adult they can talk to,” said high school counselor Mark Baldelli. “They share common issues and do best when these issues are addressed proactively in their school.” The purpose of Crew allows for relationship-building, academic progress monitoring and character development. Crew allows students to build positive connections with their peers and their crew leader. Crew leaders strategically address and assess these goals. The small group setting gives students a sense of community, connectedness and belonging. “Students need to be viewed and taught holistically,” added high school counselor Alison Gondek. “We are

trying to tend to both their personal and academic needs.” Here’s what is planned or Crew during the 2018-2019 academic year: Groups of approximately 10 to 15 students meet twice monthly for about 30 minutes during third period with an advisor. Each month has a theme and covers topics related to that theme. The school year kicked off with a campaign to get the students to understand the purpose of Crew and a team-building effort. In October, the ninth-graders set both academic and personal goals. Themes for the rest of the year are: November/ Healthy Relationships; December/ Empathy and Gratitude; January/ Respecting Differences; February/ Appreciation Oneself & Others; March/Identification of Character Strengths; April/Career Exploration; May/Fitness & Adventure; and June/ Celebration. Crew leaders for the 2018-2019 academic year at SCHS are Beth Miller, Paula Redeye, Jessica Rosenburg along with Baldelli and Gondek.

Trinity’s Annual Spaghetti dinner proceeds donated to Rev. Anne Paris and Paradise House of Buffalo This year Trinity’s dinner and basket raffle proceeds went to Rev. Anne Paris and Paradise House of Buffalo. Rev. Anne was a big part of Trinity’s history, she and her husband Rev. Hugh Pratt served here at Trinity. They are both remembered fondly and Rev. Pratt has come back to serve at Trinity in recent months. Paradise House is a transitional house for women who are have broken their addiction, paroled from prison and it helps them reunite with their families. Rev. Anne has been running this house for 25 years in a former rectory in the Broadway-Fillmore area of the city. She has hundreds of success stories. The Trinity UCC family chose this charity because it means a great deal to the members, and it also benefits the greater community, as well as WNY families. Trinity and the supportive Gowanda and WNY Communities made it possible to donate the proceeds of $1000 to Rev. Anne Paris and the Paradise House. Trinity is very grateful to our communities and its continued support of all Trinity’s endeavors, from monthly community meals, former prescription bottle collection, yearly charity benefits and hygiene kit collection.
Rev. Anne Paris, church members Jodie Edington and Alena Crosson
The kit collection information is available on our Facebook page and on our website: TrinityUcc.Gowanda trinityuccgow.wixsite.com/trinityuccgowanda

The paper clip was first patented in 1867, though it was designed to attach tickets to fabric in place of a pin. It was a single crossed loop of wire. The current design of paper clips was never actually patented, but has been in use since about 1892.

Recycling paper benefits the environment in a myriad of ways. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recycling paper reduces greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to climate change by avoiding methane emissions and reducing the energy required for a number of paper products. Recycling paper also contributes to carbon sequestration, which is the process through which agricultural and forestry practices remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Eco Preservation Society notes that carbon sequestration activities can help prevent global climate change by enhancing carbon storage in trees and soils, preserving existing tree and soil carbon and by reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Recycling paper also reduces the need for a substantial amount of landfill space and cuts back on the consumption of energy and water that is necessary to produce new paper products. Businesses looking to reduce reliance on paper can urge employees, clients and partners to use digital documents in lieu of printed documents, while private citizens can opt out of paper statements and choose to receive e-statements from their banks, mobile providers and utility companies.
