GOWANDA BOYS TRACK & FIELD TEAM HAS SUCCESSFUL SEASON The Gowanda High School varsity boys track & field team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history by defeating Olean at Hills Field on May 21. It is believed to be the first ever win over Olean in a dual meet. The Panther thinclads had to win the final event of the meet to post a 71-70 victory over the visiting Huskies. It was a total team effort as Gowanda only has 16 athletes on the team and four of them had to leave midway through the meet to attend a SAT prep course. The victorious 4 x 400 meter relay team consisting of eighth grader Noah Vogtli and senors Jacob Monat, Lyle Warrior and Nate Brawdy held off Olean in the final race that proved to be the difference in the meet. Gowanda also had top performances throughout the contest as junior Austin Jankowski remained undefeated in the 110 meter high hurdles with a season best time of 15.9. Teammate Kiefer Austin was second in the race with a personal best time of 16.9. Olean dominated the high jump, triple jump and sprints but Gowanda has able to score points in the long jump, pole vault and 200 meter dash to keep things close. The Panthers however continued to show their season long force in the shot put and discus events. Andrew Musacchio won the the discus and AFS student Ture Hassler tossed the shot put 42' 5" to claim first place in the shot put. Other first place finishers for Gowanda included: Jacob Monat (400 meter dash), Sam Chmielewski (1600 meter run and 3200 meter run), Nate Brawdy (800 meter run) and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Dominik Rodriguez, Harry Kaus Jr., Lyle Warrior and Nate Brawdy. The boys track & field team followed up their win over Olean with one of their best showings in years at the CCAA championship meet at Southwestern on May 25 and 26. Austin Jankowski brought home first place in the Division I, 110 meter high hurdles. Kiefer Austin also ran well and placed third. Sam Chmielewski surprised the large crowd in attendance with his second place finish overall (all three divisions compete together at the CCAA) in the 3200 meter run while lowering his time to 10:18.4. Other Panthers to score points at the championship meet included: Andrew Musacchio (shot put and discus), Lyle Warrior (800 and 1600 meter run), Dominik Rodriguez (pole vault), Austin Jankowski (high jump), Ture Hassler (shot put and discus), Christian Cook (3200 meter run), Sam Chmielewski (1600 meter run) and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Noah Vogtli, Jacob Monat, Dominik Rodriguez and Sam Chmielewski. At the conclusion of the meet, the Gowanda boys track & field team was presented the 2018 CCAA Division I Sportsmanship Award. Christian Cook won the CCAA Division I individual Sportsmanship Award. Nate Brawdy, Andrew Musacchio and Austin Jankowski were voted onto the CCAA Division I all-star team. Gowanda will now be sending several athletes to Niagara Falls on June 1 and 2 to compete in the New York State qualifying meet. On Wednesday, June 6, the season will come to an official close with a picnic at St. John Park. Numerous awards will be presented to individuals for their accomplishments on one of the best boys track & field teams at GCS in recent memory. After not winning a dual meet in over a decade, the Panthers won four times this spring by defeating Eden/North Collins, Salamanca, Springville and Olean. The future looks bright for the local track & field team as several top performers will return next season.

The trees will soon display new buds Again we’ll see the daffodils And wildflowers will soon bloom In valleys and distant hills The bvirds will soon erect their nest Of whatever they may find And again their cheerful singing Will be heard by all mankind Although the hard winter that has passed Will stay in mind for some while But now with spring upon us More often we can flash a smile And soon the days of summer Will be in the brighest glow Cause all too soon fall will pass by And again we’ll face more snow. THE HISTORY OF GOWANDA SPORTS
By Mark Benton, Sports Correspondent Over the past five or six years, the History of Gowanda Sports column has recaptured some of the more interesting feats from individuals and teams from the Gowanda area over the past sixty years. We have covered almost every sport that has been played in the area. Below is a recap of the local baseball and softball leagues during that time span. In baseball, the column has looked back on the beginning of Little League baseball that began in the spring of 1959 with eight teams. Phoenix Lodge won the first local Little League championship that year followed by the American Legion Post # 409 in 1960. The American Legion Post #1587 composed of players from the Cattaraugus Territory were the most dominant team in the 1960's and through the early part of the 70's. Following Little League, many players signed up to play in the Gowanda area Junior League that was formed in the early 1960's and was cancelled after the 1969 season. It was reorganized a few years later but the league operation has been inconsistent. For the years that it did exist, it was a good segue from Little League to high school baseball and well before schools established modified sports. The Gowanda Merchants baseball team has also been covered in depth over the years in this column. After being "thrown out" of the Central League following the 1967 season for using players that did not reside in the "catch" area, the Merchants were recreated by former Gowanda State Hospital player Dave Robbins in 1971. Dave has been with the team as a player/manager and then just manager since that time. The Gowanda State Hospital also fielded a team for many years until it was cut from the New York State budget following the 1972 season. The "Staters" were members of the Lake shore League that was sponsored by the Buffalo Evening News. As a youth growing up in the Gowanda area, a Sunday afternoon "Staters" game at home on the grounds of the hospital in Helmuth was always something to look forward to. Not only was the team very good each year with players such as Mel Wolfe, Dewey Golden, Bob Shutts, Bob Burns, Bob and Dave Robbins, Jim and Lenny Layhew plus others, the atmosphere surrounding the game was unique. A large grandstand with a roof, a home run fence, concession stand with hot dogs and pop and a chance to chase foul balls for fifty cents and a cracked wooden bat were the highlights. Men's fast pitch softball played first behind the American Legion on Legion Drive after World War II and followed by the six team league that played all of their games at the Thatcher Brook field located behind the homes on Torrance Place from the late 1950's through the 1968 season were legendary. Players such as Seth "Moose" Halftown, John "Bones" Edwards, Ron "Redbone" White. Lou "Looch" Selan and George "Peanuts" Dispenza were just a few of the many very good players that participated in the games that were played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from mid May through early August each season. Halftown, one of the best pitchers to ever grace the local softball diamonds was inducted into the Western New York Softball "Hall of Fame". Edwards later became the Olean Central School District Superintendent. Men's slow pitch softball replaced the fast game by 1974 and Gowanda organized a ten team league. It was the most popular summer sport in the area for several years. Most of the games were played on the fields surrounding the Gowanda High School where many of the players had graduated from. The league attracted over 200 spectators for the final championship playoff games during the first few years. However, when the school district demanded that the league pay for their own insurance to continue to use their fields, the league folded following the 1996 season. A local girls slow pitch softball league commenced in 1976 and was in operation for several summers. Many of the players were new to the game but had played fast pitch softball at Gowanda Central School when they began their program in 1975. Players such as Peggy Goodemote, Cassie Deneen, Lisa Schindler and Sharon Clabeaux were a few of the top players in the league.

Why Do Some People Have Dimples?
Dimples are caused by an abnormally short facial muscle. The zygomaticus major, a facial muscle, is attached to the skin of your cheeks. Dimples appear when the muscle pulls hard enough on your cheeks to cause visible indentations on your face. This usually occurs when we speak or smile, when the muscle is contracting.
