What is the UV Index? The ultraviolet index or UV Index is an international standard measurement of the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at a particular place and time. The scale was developed by Canadian scientists in 1992, then adopted and standardized by the UN's World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization in 1994. It is primarily used in daily forecasts aimed at the general public, and is increasingly available as an hourly forecast as well. “Time to Burn” and “Actions to Take” apply to people with fair skin that sometimes tans but usually burns. People with lighter skin need to be more cautious. People with darker skin may be able to tolerate more exposure. The U.S. National Weather Service measures ultraviolet levels on a daily basis, and uses these numbers for various exposure levels.

Research indicates that people who laugh a lot are much healthier and may live longer than those who don't find time to chuckle. A good, deep belly laugh can provide your body and mind with a great workout. Dr. Lee Berk at the Loma Linda School of Public Health in California found that laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. The organization Laughter Works, which teaches people how and why to laugh, says laughter can cause blood pressure to drop, blood to become oxygenated and endorphins to kick in, which can improve mood. And that's just the beginning. Laughing can help reduce stress and promote stronger relationships between people who laugh together. Data indicates children around the age of six laugh the most, laughing roughly 300 times per day, while adults average only 15 to 100 laughs per day.

Facts About Daffodils
Here are some facts you may not know about these cheerful blooms of spring. • The daffodil is also known as Jonquil, Narcissus, Paperwhite and the ‘Poet’s Hower’. • Narcissus is a classical Greek name in honor of a beautiful youth who became so entranced with his own reflection that he pined away and the gods turned him into this flower. • Squirrels will not eat daffodil bulbs, the bulbs and leaves contain poisonous crystals which only certain insects can eat with impunity, so don’t plant where dogs like to dig. • Daffodils contain a toxic sap which is harmful to other flowers. When arranging in a vase don’t mix with other flowers unless the daffodils have been soaking in water for 24 hours. Do not recut the stems as it will re-release the toxin. • The daffodil is the flower for March. • The Romans, believed the sap from these flowers had special healing powers. • In the Victorian days, Daffodils represented chivalry. Today is represents hope. • The daffodil is the national flower of Wales. • In Wales, it’s said if you spot the first daffodil of the season, your next 12 months will be filled with wealth. • Chinese legend has it that if a daffodil bulb is forced to bloom during the New Year, it will bring good luck to your home. • The Daffodil is the 10th wedding anniversary flower • A gift of daffodils is said to ensure happiness. • Always remember to present daffodils in a bunch – the same legends that associate this cheerful flower with good fortune warn us that when given as a single bloom, a daffodil can foretell misfortune.

A local team of manufacturers spent March 21st in the halls of the state capital discussing the needs of manufacturers with Assembly and Senate Members from across the state. During the eleventh annual event of the Manufacturing Alliance of New York State (MANY) our local team joined with manufacturers from throughout New York State and met with forty legislators and senators. Our focus was on advocacy about the importance of manufacturing to New York State. Manufacturing in New York, produces $71.4 billion in total output and employs over 450,000 workers at an average compensation of $74,579. Manufacturing is an extremely important component of the New York Economy. Our goal during the discussions was to advance policy changes pertaining to energy, human resource, taxes and workforce development. Core to our objective is to build an economic environment in New York State where manufacturers can compete globally. Through a unified voice and face to face engagement with elected officials we worked on opposing fees and assessments associated with purchasing energy, reducing worker’s compensation costs, implementing a zero percent income tax on manufacturers who are organized as ‘pass through’ corporations and encouraging investment in apprenticeship programming. During our discussions in Albany there was a great deal of focus on workforce development. It has long been clear that a trained workforce is a priority of manufacturers in our region. Through the experience of partnering and speaking with manufacturing groups from across New York State it is clear that workforce development is a priority for them as well. Based on data from the National Association of Manufacturers retaining and developing a skilled workforce is one of the most significant challenges across the region. We would pose that a lack of skilled workforce is the greatest impediment to our ability to compete globally. We pause to reflect on the progress our community is making with initiatives and programs such as P-TECH, Dream It Do It and the Chautauqua County Education Coalition. In addition to the work our schools are doing to integrate stronger STEM learning opportunities and STEM programming at our post-secondary institution. As a community we are making steady progress, however we have a long way to go to meet the demand for job-ready employees. If we are to be globally competitive we must build a workforce for the future and reduce the structural costs of doing business in New York State.

ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER I seem to be stuck in a rut. Asking others for their input in order to assist me only led to the following: “In the past, you only put us down for our opinions.” I am appreciative for any assistance with this matter? Anonymous. Your spirit teachers and spirit guides each step forward now in order to assist you with your above inquiry. They are each filling you and your spiritual path with the white light and their unconditional love in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth which you are currently seeking for your self and your spiritual path. Firstly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, consider choosing to change your current thought pattern(s) in order to move “forward” - from where you see your self currently stuck at( so to speak ), to, where you desire to be. Secondly, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, consider choosing to examine your thoughts prior to placing any words forward; carefully consider if any of the words within your thoughts may hurt you. Thirdly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, when your words within your thoughts would hurt you, they are likely to hurt another(s) outside of your self. Fourthly, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, if the words within your thoughts, would, uplift you, and, allow you to feel better/encouraged, there is a likelihood this would occur with others within your life. Fifthly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, everyone has opinions, at the same time, not everyone’s opinions are going to be acceptable to anyone else. Sixth, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, choose to become the person you would choose to surround you and choose to have your life filled with; this will act like a magnet in order to bring others with these desired qualities into your life. Seventh your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, via making a Free Will choice to let go of your current thought patterns, and by creating new thought patterns which allow you to make new choices in order to undertake new action, will bring you to your dream(s) and desired reality. Your spirit guides and spirit teachers each step back as it were; they are each filling your spiritual path with their unconditional love and the White Light in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth and understanding which you are currently seeking. The dark clouds keep rolling in As the sun occasionally is peaking through But being only February We’ll see very little skies of blue. The wind tries to win the race Between the clouds, wind and sun They all may be the winners Cause winter storms are far from fun.
LAUNDRY TIP... WHITEN WITH LEMON JUICE
The weather is unpredictable It is yet early in the year With possible thunderstorms and lightning Is something we must fear. But nature rules the weather So we may lose or we may win As we are willingly waiting For an early and sunny spring. Fireside Poetry By Old Andy Wingeier Sr.
Got dingy whites? Try lemon juice. Soak whites in a basin filled with very hot water and a generous amount of lemon juice overnight. Remove from the basin and wash as usual the next day. Another option is to add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of lemon juice to washer during the rinse cycle.

The Causes of Hiccups and How to Remedy Them Hiccups may not be a medical emergency, but they certainly can be a nuisance. Also known as “singultus,” hiccups can come out of nowhere and last for quite some time. An effective way to alleviate hiccups has proven elusive to many, forcing many people to ponder if they can be prevented. According to the resource Kids Health, the funny noises and other annoying ticks associated with hiccups can be blamed in part on the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the chest. When the diaphragm is working correctly, it helps to regulate breathing. In a contracted position, the diaphragm lets air into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes, the lungs release carbon dioxide. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm starts contracting erratically and out of rhythm. These spasms can cause the larynx and vocal cords to close suddenly, resulting in a sharp intake of air and the hiccup chirp that occurs thereafter. Hiccups can stop and start abruptly, for no reason at all. But certain things may contribute to hiccups. These include: • eating spicy food • drinking carbonated beverages • sudden changes in air temperature • excitement or emotional stress • swallowing too much air • overeating Many cases of hiccups last only a few minutes, but for some people hiccups can last a while longer. Persistent hiccups are caused by injury or irritation to the nerves that control the movement of the diaphragm. Sometimes this results from acid reflux, degenerative nerve diseases, like multiple sclerosis, or even brain injury. Hiccups also may last longer due to overuse of tobacco or alcohol. Males tend to be more prone to hiccups than females. While there are a number of ways to treat hiccups, there is no definitive cure. Holding one’s breath or putting sugar under the tongue are some of the more popular remedies. Hiccups are largely a nuisance and not a medical emergency. However, knowing how to get them under control can be a relief.

He ultimately rejected it because of the weather. • In 1859 Charles Blondin was the first person to tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. He pushed a wheelbarrow containing a small stove and proceeded to cook an omelet midway across. • Annie Taylor was the first person to successfully descend Niagara Falls. It survived and 2 days later she made the journey on her 63rd birthday. • The second man to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel, Bobby Leach, survived the fall but later died as a result of slipping on a piece of orange peel.

DOGS AND CATS
The Humane Society of the United States and the American Pet Products Association say 20 percent of the 83.3 million owned dogs in 2012 were adopted from animal shelters. Of the 95.6 million owned cats in the United States that same year, 26 percent were adopted from animal shelters. With between six and eight million animals entering shelters each year, adoption should be one of the first considerations for people looking to bring pets into their homes.
