Why Do Some People Have Dimples?

Dimples are caused by an abnormally short facial muscle. The zygomaticus major, a facial muscle, is attached to the skin of your cheeks. Dimples appear when the muscle pulls hard enough on your cheeks to cause visible indentations on your face. This usually occurs when we speak or smile, when the muscle is contracting.

“SHOTGUN STYLE HOUSE”

A "shotgun house" is a narrow rectangular domestic residence, usually no more than about 12 feet wide, with rooms arranged one behind the other and doors at each end of the house. It was the most popular style of house in the Southern United States from the end of the American Civil War (1861–65) through the 1920s. Alternate names include "shotgun shack", "shotgun hut", "shotgun cottage", and in the case of a multihome dwelling, "shotgun apartment". A railroad apartment is somewhat similar, but instead of each room opening onto the next room, it has a side hallway from which rooms are entered (by analogy to compartments in passenger rail cars). A longstanding theory is that the style can be traced from Africa to Haitian influences on house design in New Orleans, but the houses can be found in other areas. Though initially as popular with the middle class as with the poor, the shotgun house became a symbol of poverty in the mid-20th century. Several variations of shotgun houses allow for additional features and space, and many have been updated to the needs of later generations of owners. The oldest shotgun houses were built without indoor plumbing, and this was often added later, often on the back of the house (sometimes crudely). "Double-barrel" or "double" shotgun houses consist of two houses sharing a central wall, allowing more houses to be fit into an area. "Camelback" shotgun houses include a second floor at the rear of the house.

Certs is a breath mint (or, according to some, a candy mint) manufactured by Mondelēz International, long one of America’s most popular mints. Certs, debutted in 1956, was the first breath/candy mint to be nationally marketed in the United States, and has been a fixture at American drug stores and convenience stores.

THE WORLD’S SLIMMEST HOUSE Keret House is a structure and art installation in Warsaw, Poland. Constructed in 2012, it was designed by the architect Jakub Szczęsny. The two-story art installation was named after Israeli writer and filmmaker Etgar Keret, who was the building's first tenant. The building measures 3.02 feet at its narrowest point and 4.99 feet at its widest point. The iron structure contains two floors, and has one bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living area. It has two non-opening windows, with sunlight also entering through translucent glass panels that make up the walls. The entire interior is painted white and the building's electricity is obtained from a neighboring building. The house has custom water and sewage technology and is not connected to the city-provided water systems. Because of its small size, the building only accommodates a small 2-beverage refrigerator, and occupants use a ladder to travel from level to level. Entry is via retractable stairs that, when closed, become the living area.

716-332-1566 Ext. 702 HOW TO PROTECT YOUR VISION OVER THE LONG HAUL

Crows recognize human faces and hold grudges against the ones they do not like.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eye diseases related to aging are the primary cause of vision impairment in the United States. Many people consider vision loss a natural side effect of aging, but there are ways men and women can protect their vision and reduce their risk of vision loss as they age. • Quit smoking. According to the National Eye Institute, smoking doubles a person's risk for age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in men and women over the age of 50. It causes damage to the macula, which is the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. If the macula is damaged, vision may be blurry, distorted or dark. · Protect eyes from ultraviolet light. The American Optometric Association notes that UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse effects on a person's vision. A short-term effect of excessive exposure to UV radiation is photokeratitis, a painful condition that can lead to red eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Long-term effects of such exposure include a higher risk of developing cataracts and damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye used for seeing. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunglasses that provide protection against UV-A and UV-B rays.

• Maintain a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure, often referred to as HBP or hypertension, can contribute to vision loss as a person ages. The American Heart Association notes that HBP can strain blood vessels in the eyes, causing them to narrow or bleed. HBP also can cause the optic nerve to swell, compromising a person's vision as a result. Eye damage that results from HBP is cumulative, which means the longer it goes untreated, the more likely the damage to the eye will be permanent. Men and women can maintain a healthy blood pressure by eating right, exercising regularly and sustaining a healthy weight. • Take breaks from work. Computer vision syndrome, or CVS, is a legitimate condition that can develop when a person spends ample time staring at a computer screen. Adults and kids alike are susceptible to CVS, which can cause symptoms such as blurred vision, double vision, eye irritation, and headaches. One way to reduce risk of developing CVS is to take frequent breaks from staring at the screen. A handful of 20-second breaks over the course of an hour can help prevent CVS. In addition, change lighting in the room where you work so you can reduce glare on the computer screen.

The General Electric "Monitor-Top" refrigerator was introduced in 1927, so-called because of its resemblance to the gun turret on the ironclad warship USS Monitor of the 1860s. The compressor assembly, which emitted a great deal of heat, was placed above the cabinet, and enclosed by a decorative ring. Over a million units were produced. As the refrigerating medium, these refrigerators used either sulfur dioxide, which is corrosive to the eyes and may cause loss of vision, painful skin burns and lesions, or methyl formate, which is highly flammable, harmful to the eyes, and toxic if inhaled or ingested. Many of these units are still functional today.

OPERA HOUSE CINEMA SERIES TO SCREEN “BOUNDARIES”

FREDONIA – The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is “Boundaries,” starring Christopher Plummer. It will be screened on Sat., Aug. 11, and Tues., Aug. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Laura (Vera Farmiga) is a single mom living in Seattle, who has a constant need to put others & animals before herself. The more she tries to set boundaries in her life, the faster those lines are crossed. When her estranged, criminally-minded father Jack (Plummer) is kicked out of his retirement home – for unspecified misdeeds – Laura agrees to drive him down the coast to live with her sister in LA. Along for the ride is her son Henry, and an assortment of animal charity cases. Jack convinces Henry to help him sell off his copious supply of marijuana at every stop of their journey, resulting in unexpected reunions with old friends and family. Owen Gleiberman, in Variety, calls the film “a touching yet wised-up father-daughter road movie that’s the best version of this sort of film you could imagine.” Tiffany Tchobanian, in Film Threat, calls it “a narrative that enables these brilliant actors to shine and lures viewers in on their wild ride full of mayhem, shady pot-dealings, and inspiring moments of self-discovery.” Peter Hammond, in Hollywood Daily, calls it “the perfect family comedy.” Susan Wlosczyna, on RogerEbert.com, says “being in the presence of Plummer these days is always time well spent.” Rated R for drug material, language, some sexual references and nude sketches, “Boundaries” runs one hour, 44 minutes. The Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org. Thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor, the first 20 SUNY Fredonia students at each screening are admitted free. For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716-679-1891.

FREEZING ZUCCHINI

For the home gardener, zucchini is often a first round pick when planning the summer garden. With good reason. Easy to grow and with a long growing season, zucchini is an easy home run when looking to fill the gathering basket. And fill it you will. Harvest begins in early summer and does not let up until summer is over. Depending on your growing zone, that can mean a whole lot of zucchini. By mid-summer, the ideas have run out. Bags of zucchini begin to appear in the office break room or are left on your front porch as other intrepid gardeners also face zucchini burnout, desperate to clear the counter before the only choice is the compost pile. Zucchini (and summer squash, for that matter) freezes well. With a little preparation up front, zucchini and squash can become a welcome “go to” for fall and winter cooking.

Preparing to Freeze

Consider how you will use your zucchini or squash. Do you love it sliced into a stir fry? Chopped and steamed? Grated for baking? Sliced, chopped or grated, it all freezes the same and come winter you will appreciate being able to thaw and dump without having to fool with it a second time.

Blanching

Like all vegetables, zucchini has enzymes within that will soften, discolor and deplete nutrients in the produce over time, even when frozen. Blanching — a quick bath in boiling water — will destroy the enzymes and any bacteria that may be lurking. Bring some unsalted water to boil in a pot deep enough to completely submerge manageable batches. Once a rolling boil is reached, drop the zucchini into the pot for 3 to 4 minutes. When it comes out, the zucchini should still be firm. Transfer into a very large bowl or pot of ice water using a slotted spoon to suspend cooking. Move the zucchini into a colander to drain for a few minutes, then pat dry with paper towels.

Packaging

Consider using pint or quart bags. It makes freezer space management more tolerable and allows you to thaw only what you’ll need. Pack bags as full as possible and push as much air out as possible before sealing.

Too bad the weather can’t be equal And treat us all the same But there again we must be content With Mother Nature’s game Sometimes we are the losers Chances of winning are far away Unless what seems impossible You may have a lucky day. Fireside Poetry By Old Andy Wingeier Sr.

COCONUTS

Coconuts take about one year to fully ripen, with several coconuts growing together in bunches that ripen at about the same time. Six or seven months after the fruits emerge, the inside of the coconut contains mostly water, which you can harvest and drink. Over the next five or six months, the water converts to the white nut meat lining around the inside of the shell. The coconut should be fully ripe at 12 months after fruits emerge.

FIVE CHAUTAUQUA MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS PERFORM FOR WESTFIELD-MAYVILLE ROTARY CLUB

For at least the past two decades, the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville has provided thousands of dollars in financial contributions to the Chautauqua Foundation, specifically in support of scholarships for music students who are enrolled in the Chautauqua Institution School of Performing Arts. This year five talented students, who benefitted by the $1,000 partial scholarship donation made by the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club, gratefully offered a special performance at this organization’s July 31 meeting, which was held at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield. Helen Baran, Past Club President, who had arranged for this club program, welcomed and introduced the five scholarship recipients. They were Matthew Pearce, Youjung Won, Gretchen Pille, Matthew Soibelman and Jinhee Park. Pearce, Won, Pille and Soibelman, who are enrolled in the voice program, each sang one or two selections. They were accompanied on the piano by Park, who is also studying at Chautauqua Institution this summer. Matthew Pearce, from Union, Kentucky, is a tenor in the voice program. He is in his second year of his master’s program at The Julliard School. He performed ‘O Sole Mio [lyrics by G. Capurro; music by E. di Capua and A. Mazzuchi]. Youjung Won, a soprano in the voice program, is from Seoul, South Korea. She is enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music. She performed Heart, We Will Forget Him [A. Copland] and Will There Really Be a Morning? [R.I. Gordon]. Matthew Soibelman, whose hometown is Tarzana, California, is a bass baritone in the voice program. He is entering his senior year at California State University. He performed I’m a lonely man, Susannah [C. Floyd]. Gretchen Pille, a soprano in the voice program, is from Papillion, Nebraska. Having just graduated from the University of Kansas, she will be moving to New York City in the fall. She performed Loveliest of Trees [AE Housman, J. Duke] and Forever Young (from “Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan”) [J. Corigliano]. Jinhee Park is a pianist from Seoul, South Korea, and she currently lives in New York. She obtained her Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and she is enrolled in post-graduate studies at The Manhattan School of Music. As the four vocalists sang their selections, Park accompanied them on the piano. The Rotary Club of Westfield congratulates these accomplished music students and wishes them a wonderful Chautauqua experience and great success in their continuing studies and musical careers!

His invention was originally intended as a weapon known as Greek fire and it was used on approaching enemy ships. Later, it was adapted for use as a celebratory instrument used on festive occasions.

RAINBOWS A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that is caused by both reflection and refraction of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicolored arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun. Rainbows can be full circles, however, the average observer sees only an arc, formed by illuminated droplets above the ground. In a "primary rainbow", the arc shows red on the outer part and violet on the inner side. This rainbow is caused by light being refracted (bent) when entering a droplet of water, then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it. In a double rainbow, a second arc is seen outside the primary arc, and has the order of its colors reversed, red facing toward the other one, in both rainbows. This second rainbow is caused by light reflecting twice inside water droplets.
