Sea Scorpion (Eurypterus Remipes)
A prehistoric sea scorpion, it was designated the official state fossil of New York in 1984. Eurypterus Remipes is an extinct relative of the modern king crab and sea scorpion. This creature lived over 400 million years ago during the Silurian Age and crawled along the bottom of the shallow, brackish sea then covering much of what is now New York state. Eurypterids are very rare fossils worldwide - New York State is one of only a few places in the world where euryterids can be commonly found.

So beautiful when in full bloom Leaving green foliage as they die. One of Earth’s numerous beauties Under a heavenly blue sky.
Bringing charm and color to our weary life’s way Lighting our many landscapes on a dark and dreary day Flowers brighten many days of sorrow Helping thoughts of a more happy and peaceful tomorrow. At weddings in their brightest array Bringing remembrance of a Happy and sacred day. Showing in many occasions of the years To bring back smiles And shed unwanted fears. Often said - Say it with flowers Most likely for friendship and love As for all of Earth’s beauty Sent down from God above. Fireside Poetry By Old Andy Wingeier Sr.
Some sources report that the very first sparkler was called a Cherosiphon and it was invented in AD 670 by a citizen of Heliopolis named Callinicos. His invention was originally intended as a weapon known as Greek fire and it was used on approaching enemy ships. Later, it was adapted for use as a celebratory instrument used on festive occasions.

Westfield Memorial Hospital 26th Annual Golf Tournament
The Westfield Memorial Hospital Foundation will host its 26th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Chautauqua Golf Club located in Chautauqua, NY. Consider joining the fun as foundation is also celebrating a milestone 40th anniversary this year. Touted to be one of the area’s best golf tournaments, WMH Foundation Golf Committee Chair, Patricia DiPalma, invites all those interested in supporting Westfield’s community hospital to a fun-filled day of golf and camaraderie. An early bird special is available for those who register to golf before June 21, 2018 so please sign up as soon as possible. Participants will enjoy breakfast, lunch, a steamed and raw clam tent, a cocktail reception and a prime rib dinner. An array of prize opportunities will be available for a variety of contests. As in the past, the WMH Foundation is holding a raffle in conjunction with the golf tournament. This year’s prizes include a Weber Genesis grill, Bills Sideline Club tickets, a 50” Smart TV, a Robotic vacuum, a Ride on Kids Lamborghini and a 10’ Kayak. Tickets are sold at the hospital, the Westfield Farmer’s Market and by calling the number below. Hospital Administrator, Peter Pascale notes the newly renovated emergency department was made possible through the proceeds raised from previous golf tournaments along with the foundation’s highly successful RED (Renovate our Emergency Department) Campaign. The funds raised from this year’s tournament will also benefit Westfield Memorial Hospital. For more information on the Westfield Memorial Hospital Foundation 26th Annual Golf Tournament benefitting Westfield Memorial Hospital, or to buy raffle tickets contact WMHF Executive Director Patty DiPalma at 716-793-2338 or email@example.com.
The Humane Society of the United States and the American Pet Products Association say 20 percent of the 83.3 million owned dogs in 2012 were adopted from animal shelters. Of the 95.6 million owned cats in the United States that same year, 26 percent were adopted from animal shelters. With between six and eight million animals entering shelters each year, adoption should be one of the first considerations for people looking to bring pets into their homes.

STATUTE MILE vs. NAUTICAL MILE DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?
A statute mile is what we commonly use to measure long distances over land. A statute mile is equal to 5,280 feet. A nautical mile is usually used to measure distances that are across open water or space. A nautical mile is equal to 6,076 feet.
ARE YOUR FAVORITE FRUITS READY TO EAT? CANTALOUPE
Cantaloupe should feel heavier than it looks and smell musky and sweet. Also you should be able to press your thumb in slightly on the bottom and there shouldn't be a lip around the stem. If it smells over-sweet it's most likely over ripe. You can let a cantaloupe ripen on your counter top if you get one under-ripe
It should be firm, not mushy, but not rock hard either. The most important thing, however, is smell. An unripe pineapple won't smell like anything. An overripe pineapple will smell vinegary. A ripe pineapple will smell sweet. You can test if a pineapple is ripe by trying to pluck out one of the leaves near the center. If it comes out fairly easily then the pineapple is good to go. If it's hard to pluck, it's not yet ripe.

Smell. Really, this is the most reliable criterion for practically any fruit. Also, if you smell the slightest hint of mold, fermentation, or foulness, you know they may not keep even one night. Another sign is that a ripe strawberry will be red through and through. A strawberry picked underripe will be white or even slightly greenish at the top. It doesn't taste good then. But this is a negative sign, because not all red strawberries taste good.
There is probably no fool-proof way to determine 'ripeness' without taking a slice out of a watermelon. The best you can do is look for certain signs: Ripe melons have a hollow sound when you tap or slap the outside It should feel relatively heavy when lifted Weird areas on the skin aren't necessarily bad. Insects may have tried to start eating the fruit because it is ripe, but have only marred the surface. Unfortunately, melons don't continue to ripen once picked, unlike fruits such as apples and bananas, which contain ethylene. As a tip, don't store melons with these kinds of fruit, they may well go 'soggy.'
