ZODIACTION:

SEGWAY HUMAN TRANSPORTER

For MAY 25 - 31, 2014

(A syndicated column created, copyrighted and published by: Dennis Morley)

TAURUS: Consider surrounding yourself with people who stimulate intelligence on the twenty fifth. The Sun and Moon are both in your Home Sign on the twenty sixth thru eighth allowing for inner and outer alignment of self. The Moon moves into Gemini late afternoon on the twenty eighth thru the thirtieth with Mercury transiting in Gemini; communication of all forms to others and self is highlighted. Romance and/or nurturing others is possible on the thirty first. GEMINI: Consider keeping the emotions of others at a distance on the twenty fifth by engaging in

objective thinking. Temptation to test others on the twenty sixth thru eighth may place you out side your “safe” zone; consider self responsibility. The Moon and Mercury transit thru your Home Sign late the twenty eighth thru thirtieth, allowing all communications to be examined prior to sharing. Consider learning from those with experience on the thirty first.

MOON CHILD: Consider choosing social activities which stimulate the mind on the twenty fifth.

A Taurus person(s) may be highlighted in any of life’s sectors on the twenty sixth through eighth; consider wisdom prior to completing open ended projects on these same dates. Rethinking everything prior to communication or action is indicated on the twenty eighth thru the thirtieth. Romance is possible on the thirty first; allow for communicating intentions of the heart.

LEO: An out going nature with others on the twenty fifth may allow for additional ideas to come forth

for the completion of open ended projects. Center stage may be readily accessible on the twenty sixth through eighth; consider placing gratitude forward versus a sense of entitlement. A female authoritative figure may be observing from a distance. Travel may be possible from the twenty eighth thru thirtieth. Romantic interludes are highlighted on the thirty first.

VIRGO: Thoughts may be sought from you via others on the twenty fifth. Consider placing grudges aside and the need to outwardly test others on the twenty sixth thru eighth; looking within may bring you long sought answers. Communication and travel are highlighted for the twenty eighth thru the thirtieth; agreement to either may bring pleasant responses from those around you. A romantic jaunt is highlighted for possibility throughout the thirty first.

LIBRA: You may fuel the fires of others around you on the twenty fifth; positive actions and words

may be rewarded by an authoritative female figure. Your outgoing nature on the twenty sixth thru eighth may bring someone(s) to your need in order to complete an unfinished project. Balance and wisdom are indicated via communication and action on the twenty eighth thru thirtieth. Mars Direct and the transiting Moon on the thirty first may allow for romance.

SCORPIO: Those around you may challenge your inner nature- causing emotions to rise or steam on

the twenty fifth; consider the possibility for patience and letting go of control. Self responsibility on the twenty sixth thru eighth may allow your inner nature to shine and complete open ended projects. Travel and communication may be highlighted on the twenty eighth thru thirtieth. Passion combined with a loving heart may bring about a life long romance.

SAGITTARIUS: Consider kindness on the twenty fifth versus the need to be right. A Taurus or Capricorn authoritative figure may be highlighted from the twenty sixth thru eighth; you may find your self center stage during these three dates. Consider rethinking everything through quadruply from the twenty eighth thru the thirtieth prior to action or communication. Energies become more nurturing on the thirty first; consider the possibility for giving the same to others.

CAPRICORN:

An outgoing nature on the twenty fifth may surprise even you; this same nature may result with enterprising possibilities. A Taurus person(s) may be highlighted on the twenty sixth thru eighth in order to assist with finishing an open ended project(s). Travel may be indicated from the twenty eighth through the thirtieth; self responsibility to remain flexible is indicated. Romance may be experienced the thirty first; a Moon Child is highlighted.

AQUARIUS: Consider giving or attending an intellectual gathering on the twenty fifth. It may be possible to finish opened ended projects on the twenty sixth thru eighth- your perfectionist’s nature may insure its accuracy via completion. The Moon transiting in Gemini on the twenty eighth thru thirtieth may highlight communication of all forms and the possibility for travel; short jaunts may be considered. Writers considering new topics may choose romance on the thirty first.

The Segway Human Transporter came to market in 2002 as the invention of Dean Kamen. The rider essentially steers one by leaning fore and aft, and aiming to the left or right by pulling the handlebars. The Segway’s top speed is about 12 miles per hour.

Wine in Mythology In Persian mythology, wine was discovered when a woman, suffering from a headache, drank the fermented grape juice stored in a jar. She went to sleep, and when she awoke, her headache was cured. Wine was typically proclaimed the drink of the gods, by Egyptians, Sumerians, and Greeks. Wine was often a part of religious rituals, due to its effects, as well as its symbolism. The Irish believe that fairies are particularly fond of good wine. In days of old, royalty would leave a keg of wine out for the fairies at night - and by morning, it was always gone.

PISCES: Others may act as a catalyst for your possible emotional tirades; keep in mind the final choice is always our own. Consider doing for others what you may seek from them on the twenty sixth thru eighth- versus choosing the role of prim Madonna. Communication and decisive self responsibility is high lighted from the twenty eighth thru thirtieth. Romance is possible on the thirty first when the heart is realized and open to choosing a life long commitment.

ARIES: Decisive action on the twenty fifth may open many seemingly closed doors when this choice is made. You may find your self center stage on the twenty sixth through the twenty eighth; keep in mind- others may be observing you as much as you are them. Communication from the heart and mind may open up locked doors for romantic possibilities on the twenty eighth through the thirtieth. Romance is highlighted on the thirty first; choose wisely.

LARGEST GLACIERS BY CONTINENT North America – Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. Hubbard has also been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska ever since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895 (Davidson, 1903). And, this is happening despite climate change and the fact that many glaciers are thinning and retreating.

The Vatnajokull covers about 8% of Iceland with and average thickness of 400meter. Beneath the glacier are active volcanoes. Grimsvoth Volcano is Iceland’s most active – latest eruptions in 1996, 1998, 2004.

Africa – Glaciers of Kilimanjaro

These glaciers may not be the biggest on the continent but they are definitely on the highest mountain of the continent. They were also the center of much global warming alarmist hype until it was proven that retreat and advance of glaciers is not caused by climate change as much as it is caused by overall changes in precipitation.

Asia – Siachen Glacier

Siachen glacier is the highest battleground on earth. It is a place where India and Pakistan always meet in a frozen standoff. It is the world’s largest non polar glacier, Siachen glacier is sometimes called third pole. This glacier is well known for its scarce population and treacherous climatic conditions. Siachin boasts more than 2 trillion cubic feet of ice, and within 25 kms has 45 peaks which rise up to a height of 18000 feet.

90% of the world’s glaciers in Antarctica and Patagonia at the southern tip of South America are melting quickly. Argentina’s mighty Perito Moreno glacier is thriving in defiance of the global climate change. University of Alaska Fairbanks experts say the area’s heavy precipitation seems to have increased. This combined with strong, cold Patagonian winds has reinforced the glacier.

Australia – Heard Island Glacier

Australia’s little know glaciers sit in sub-Antarctic Heard Island in the Indian Ocean. The area was discovered by U.S. Captain William Heard in 1853. Scientists call the area an ideal laboratory for studying climate change – at the end of the Polar Zone and isolated from humans.

ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER I have reoccurring dreams of others- some who have already passed to the other side; some who are still heregiving me gifts and then standing there looking at me as I am walking away. It feels as though they are waiting for something from me. Please give any possible insights? Anonymous. Your spirit guides and spirit teachers all step forward here for you; they are filling your spiritual path with the white light and their unconditional love in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth which you are seeking. As your spirit guides and spirit teachers step forward for you... they would also like you to be aware... many of those who have crossed over to the spirit side of life... who you see/come to visit you within your dreams are here from the other side as well. Your spirit teachers and spirit guides would firstly choose to relay the reason for the occurrence and many repeated occurrences of this dream/similar dreams is due to its importance it has to your spirit. They continue on by relaying the message of “this/these dreams” have to do with one of the lessons your own spirit chose to learn during this life time while it is having a human experience. Your spirit guides and spirit teachers continue by relaying...not only did you choose them to be a part of this chosen experience via your spirit’s free will... your spirit’s free will chose to be born to your mother and father and to those around you... on the earth plane... as well as those around you on the spirit side of life who remain ever present when your free will calls upon them. Secondly, they relay, during this/these dreams as well as in your waking hours... you have learned to place your hand out in order to receive from others in expectation or via your self created illusion of self entitlement... with out giving gratitude to the giver(s) ...and...most importantly... to the Creator. Thirdly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers continue by relaying this is why your dream(s) are showing you this truth. This is the reason those within your dream(s) stand there waiting for your response... not because they expect your gratitude... because... they have chosen via their own spirit’s free will to be a part of this lesson/your chosen lesson... in order for your spirit to have the possibility to learn what it has chosen to learn for itself... the lesson to be grateful for anything and everything. Fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, for your spirit to know via learning its chosen lesson... we ( including your self ) are created in the Creator’s image... and by being grateful to any other... from the smallest through the greatest... when you say, “I am grateful,” you are choosing to recognize your Creator... and you are relaying your gratitude to your Creator via the smallest through the greatest. By saying, “I am grateful,” to any other... you are saying, “I am grateful to the Creator for your being able to give this to me and I am grateful for your willingness to do this for me.” Your Spirit guides and teachers now step back, as it were, and your mother’s spirit and your father’s spirit now step forward to relay their own messages to you. They each relay their parental love for you and they each relay they are here for you via their individual free will... when you make the choice to call upon their spirit(s) for their assistance ( individually and/or together ). Your Father’s spirit; your Mother’s spirit; and your spirit teachers; spirit guides each step back now upon each of their own paths and their own sojourns. As they each do so...they are filling your spiritual path with unconditional love and with the white light in order to continue to assist you via your request(s) with their understanding and for the truth(s) for which you are seeking. You may write your questions to Dennis for consideration to: or go to his Web Site at: and send him an e-mail directly from there specifying you are requesting Dennis to use your question for this article and indicate you give Dennis permission to use your question. You can also set up individual appointments from there as well.

Turkeys have great hearing, but no external ears. They can also see in color, and have excellent visual acuity and a wide field of vision (about 270 degrees), which makes sneaking up on them difficult. However, turkeys have a poor sense of smell (what’s cooking?), but an excellent sense of taste.

• It’s barbecue time, and here’s a fun, festive idea for your next backyard shindig: For each guest, stuff a mason jar with a clean bandana (for a napkin) and a set of silverware. Write the name on the jar with a silver paint pen made to stick to glassware. Cute, functional and a keepsake! Here’s more to get your grilling season started. — JoAnn • “Bring a distinctive towel to a pool party so that you will know where your towel is. You can make an extra-large towel by sewing two smaller towels together, too.” — U.A. in New York • “For a really fun take on kebabs, use fruit instead of meat. The kids especially love fruit on a stick. If you have some neat cookie cutters, use them to cut watermelon into different shapes.” — M.M. in Michigan

• To keep ants from invading your patio, draw a thick line of chalk (sidewalk chalk works great!) as a boundary. Ants don’t like to cross a chalk line and will leave your patio party alone. • “Set out wasp attracters at the far reaches of your yard so that the wasps will be busy out there and not attacking your guests.” — T.C. in South Carolina • Use a muffin tin on the table to serve condiments. For larger portions (like lettuce, onion slices, maybe pickle spears), set a cup down in the muffin well. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Rt. 20, Portland, NY •

Avoid LastMinute College Expenses If you have a just-graduated high-school senior going off to college, what might give you additional sticker shock when you unload your student at the dorm is discovering all the extras you still need to buy. Start now and space out your purchases over the summer. The local stores near the college will be all ready for you to do your last-minute buying, but their prices won’t necessarily be what you want to pay. The first step is to contact the school and get a list of what is provided and what is allowed in dorm rooms. Some questions to ask: If the space is a suite or triple/quad dorm, is there a stocked kitchen? How much closet space is allotted for each person? Is cooking allowed? What size are the mattresses? What is the approved method for hanging pictures or bulletin boards/dry erase boards on the wall? How high off the floor are the beds? Here’s a partial list of things to buy or bring: • Under-bed clear storage bins • Bed risers to elevate beds a few inches • Desktop storage — stackable trays • Clothes hangers • Fan • Alarm clock • Basic tool kit • Flashlights and batteries (also good for walking across campus at night) • Trash can • Desk lamp

Sheets (2 sets) Extra pillows Laundry bag/basket HDMI, computer cables, WiFi adapters • Power-surge protectors, extension cords • Space Bags for bulky seasonal items (think puffy coats in November) If your student will have a roommate, the two need to compare notes in advance about who will bring what: coffee maker, small refrigerator, microwave, printer, television, behind-the-door mirror, matching decorations, mini stereo, area rug and tap lights. For personal items, start with your student’s room at home and what he or she uses on a daily basis: • Pillow • Bathroom supplies, shower caddy, towels, flipflops • Headphones • Study supplies • Laptop and bag • Cellphone and charger • Camera with extra memory cards • Bicycle, helmet and lock • Backpack • Workout gear • Vitamins • Multiple types of footwear Don’t leave these until the last minute: Shipping of items you can’t transport. Get the exact address on campus and send boxes in advance. Know where you’ll be able to lay your hands on a hand truck or moving dolly on move-in day. Don’t expect to be able to rent one at the last minute to take boxes up to the fourth floor of the dorm. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce congratulates Kevin Sanvidge, who was named this past week to fill a critical slot in the administration of County Executive Vince Horrigan. Sanvidge will hold the dual job of Executive Director of the Industrial Development Agency for Chautauqua County, and Director of the County’s Planning and Economic Development Department. Kevin brings strong private sector and community perspective to the position. He is a former Chairman of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and for several years chaired the Chamber/MAST Public Policy Committee. He is a member of the board of directors for Lake Shore Savings Bank, chairs its Compensation Committee, and is a member of its Corporate Governance Committee. He was Executive Vice President of Administration for the former Cliffstar Corporation from 1999-2011, and earlier worked at AL Tech Specialty Steel Corporation for 21 years, where he served in various management positions including Vice President of Administration. Kevin Sanvidge is an excellent choice to lead the county’s economic development efforts. His business back-ground in Chautauqua County provides him with an important perspective on job creation and business growth. He has also taken an active role in advocating for important business policy issues at the local, state, and national levels. At the Chamber and MAST we not only enjoyed working with Kevin in his volunteer roles here, but we learned a great deal from him as well. He is both a good listener and a leader. He brings a voice of reason to any discussion, and was always a thoughtful and well-spoken representative for our organizations. We commend County Executive Horrigan for his choice. Bill Daly, who is retiring from the post at the end of this month, left big shoes to fill. Kevin Sanvidge will wear them well.

Each year the Chamber of Commerce provides an opportunity for its members to meet directly with the County Executive and ask questions. This year, with Vince Horrigan new in the role of County Executive, and with a number of important issues facing county government, we expect the business community to turn out in force for this event. The County Executive Breakfast will be held Friday, June 6 at the White Inn in Fredonia. Breakfast begins at 8:30, with registration opening at 8am. The event is sponsored by: Chadwick Bay Broadcasting, Chautauqua Institution, Crown Benefits Group, DFT Communications, SUNY Fredonia, Jamestown Community College, Jamestown Jammers Baseball, Jamestown Mattress Company, KeyBank, M & T Bank, Nestle Purina PetCare, OBSERVER, Phillips Lytle LLP, The Post-Journal, Serta Mattress Company, SKF Aeroengine North America, Southern Tier Environments for Living, Univera Healthcare, WCA Hospital, and WJTN/WWSE/WKSN/WHUG/WQFX. To make reservations, please call the Chamber at 366-6200 or 484-1101, or register online at www.chautauquachamber.org.

Join your friends from the Chamber of Commerce in an event to help kick off the summer season right! The next Experience Chautauqua Networking Event will be held at Cabana Sam’s Sunset Bay Grill on the beautiful beach at Lake Erie, Thursday, June 19 from 5:00-6:30pm. The Chamber is proud to hold this event at such a tremendous venue, to make it not only a kick-off for the summer beach season, but also a thank you to the many Chautauqua County businesses who were instrumental in the Repower Dunkirk movement to be certain that NRG would have a presence in our county for years to come. This networking event is sponsored by Casella Waste Services, Jamestown Jammers Baseball, Liazon Corporation, OBSERVER, Putnam Record Insurance Agency, and The PostJournal. It’s just $10 for Chamber members who are preregistered, or $12 at the door. It will include a cash bar, free appetizers, lots of door prizes, and great opportunities to network with your fellow Chamber members. Register now by calling 3666200 or 484-1101 or sign up online at www.chautauquachamber.org.

HOW WOULD YOU PLAY IT?

Assume you’re declarer at four spades and West leads the ace and another diamond, which you ruff. You lead the ten of spades, which wins, and then the jack, taken by West with the ace. West shifts to a heart, won by East with the ace, and East returns the king of diamonds. It doesn’t matter whether you ruff high or low — in either case West sooner or later scores his nine of trumps, and down you go. That’s the story if you played the hand this way, but naturally there’s more to it than that. The question is whether you can figure out how to make the contract — and it can be made — now that you know how the East-West cards are divided.

17 DFW / 13 SC

As with most problems of this type, the solution is easy once you’ve seen it. If you’d like to work it out for yourself, stop reading right here; if not, here’s the way it’s done: Obviously, you have to try to do something to keep West from getting a second trump trick. To that end, after ruffing the diamond jack at trick two, you should lead a club and trump it in dummy! Now play the third round of diamonds and, when East produces the king, discard a heart (instead of ruffing). This hands East-West their second trick, but the only other one they can get is the ace of trumps. East is out of diamonds, and there is nothing else he can return to injure you. The effect of this “loser on loser” play is that it removes a potential threatening card (the king of diamonds) from East’s hand at the same time as you dispose of a heart — which was a loser in any case. It is not important that you wind up losing two diamond tricks instead of a heart and a diamond. What is important is that you lose only one trump trick instead of two. © 2014 King Features Syndicate Inc.
