Q:

Painting in Winter Can be Tricky

Q:

Can I paint rooms during the wintertime? My friend says it’s impossible to do because the weather is too cold. What do you say? — Jeanine H., via email It’s not impossible, but in colder climates it certainly can be more difficult. The main reason is that rooms need to be wellventilated when painting; otherwise the room is hazardous to be in. It’ll need to continue to be ventilated while it’s drying, in order to keep humidity down, which means the windows will be wide open in the middle of winter. In more-temperate regions, painting in winter really isn’t a problem. Not only can you ventilate a room without getting frozen out of the house, but the paint cures more evenly. In below-freezing temperatures, a latex-based paint may not dry as evenly or cure as well. But painters do interior work in cold weather all the time. How do they do it without sealing off the room from the rest of the house?

You could take a few hints from them. Professional painters often use a reverse-air system. Rigged into one of the windows, it pulls air from the room to the outside of the house at a constant rate, so that fumes don’t seep into the rest of the house — and the room being painted stays at a comfortable temperature. Even without such a system, you can paint a room by setting up a fan in the window pointing outward, and keeping your heating system registers open in the the room. Wear a respirator mask when painting to avoid breathing in fumes, and keep children out. If you need to add more than one coat or the paint seems to be taking longer than usual to dry, consider bringing in a dehumidifier to remove more moisture from the air and speed drying. Queen Anne Desk Adventurous Dog Ignores Owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My terrier “Bill” drives me nuts with his disobedience! Last week he jumped out of the car when I stopped at the ATM, and ran along the streets and through traffic, barking at everything as I chased him. Eventually he turned up at the house three hours later and just strutted in. I had to take a vacation day from work to deal with this. It isn’t the first time. What can I do? — Wits’ End in Springfield, Mass. DEAR WITS’ END: I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but Bill needs you to be more authoritative. He doesn’t recognize you as someone he has to listen to — and the consequences of this have become frustrating and, obviously, dangerous. This is not irreversible, but you need to change a few things. First, Bill should never, ever be loose in the car. A pet seat restraint to

which his leash is attached, or a car crate, must be used at all times. Second, begin retraining Bill in how to come when called. Put him on a longer leash (6 feet), let him run out to the end of the leash, then call him. If he doesn’t come, reel him in, then let him go to the end again and repeat the call. Once he comes on his own, reward him. Third, retrain your command voice. Bill won’t respond to a pleading or stressed-out voice. Use a strong, calm voice when calling him. Fourth, spend a lot more time with your dog — he’s got a ton of energy, clearly. Take him for daily, long walks, and reinforce his obedience training daily as well — all while leashed. Don’t let Bill have his way any longer. Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. My new book, “Fighting Fleas,” is available now. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Do You Know Your Credit Score? Before you begin your holiday shopping, ask yourself this: Do you know your credit score? A recent survey by the American Bankers Association showed that 56 percent of those polled did not know their FICO, which is their credit score. A credit score is more than just a number, it represents your total creditworthiness: whether your bills are paid on time, how much of your available credit you’ve used and much more. Here are some tips from the American Bankers Association: • Order your credit report every year, and take a close look at it. By law, you can get one free at www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. • Be clear on the value of a good credit rating. The consequences of having a low score can be far-reaching. At the very least, the number will help lenders determine if they’re going to give you money, and if so, at what rate of interest. However, others use that same credit score for employment screening, insurance rates — even applications for housing rentals. • Pay more than the minimum every month on your credit cards. If you can’t

make a payment, call the creditor and work out a plan. Doing so might keep you from getting nailed with higher interest rates. • Read the fine print on any credit application. Note the credit limits, annual fees, terms and conditions, and the grace period. • Don’t pay those who say they can fix your credit report. It can’t be done. Accurate information (even negative) is on your report until it scrolls off, usually many years from now. It’s not easy to fix a low credit score, but you can with constant monitoring of your spending. Keep your credit use low, and pay your bills (more than the minimum) on time every month, and eventually your credit score will climb. • Don’t make late payments, and don’t approach the limit on your credit cards. Using too much of your available credit causes your credit score to fall. If you can’t afford the payment, don’t make the purchase. • Beware the danger signs: If you can pay only the minimum each month, get a lot of cash advances just for living expenses or transfer balances back and forth, you’re likely getting into trouble. Talk to someone about it to help get you back on track. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www.nfcc.org) is a good place to start. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Did You Know... Mr. Peanut, the mascot for Planters peanuts, was created by a 14-year-old. In 1916, the company held a contest in which the winning design would become their brand icon. Young Antonio Gentile submitted a sketch of an anthropomorphic peanut with arms and crossed legs which he called "Mr. Peanut." A graphic artist later added a monocle, top hat, white gloves, and a cane to indicate that Planters peanuts were in a class of their own. And Antonio? He won the grand prize...a whole $5!

Queen Anne Desk

Q:

I have what I think is a Queen Anne desk. Even though it does seem similar to this style of furniture, I can’t find a date on it. Where would it be imprinted? — Patrick, West Warwick, Ill. It probably would not have a date actually on the piece. This was seldom done by cabinetmakers. The Queen Anne style of furniture was developed during the reign of Anne, Queen of Great Britain (1702-1714). Cabriole legs and curving lines often are found in furniture from this period. Most of the pieces I’ve seen were made during the early years of the last century. To determine if your piece is antique and genuine, you need to consult with an expert. Don’t rely on a neighbor, unless the neighbor is a certified appraiser. *** I have a glass bowl that is signed “Chippendale.” According to what I’ve been told, the bowl was a wedding gift in 1925. I can’t find the mark in any of the reference books I own. Can you help me? — Susan, Deland, Fla. One of the better references is “Miller’s Antiques Marks,” compiled by Judith Miller. This portable, pocket-size book helps identify and date such items as silver, bronzes, ceramics, glass, costume jewelry, dolls and even teddy bears. Each mark is labeled with the name of the factory or designer that used it, its

location, dates of operation, plus additional information when available. Your mark, for example, was used by the Jefferson Glass Company of Follansbee, Wyo., from 1900 until 1933. This reference, distributed by Hachette Book Group, is $9.99 and available at amazon.com. *** I have a copy of “You’ve Had It, Charlie Brown,” by Charles M. Schulz, published in 1969. Is it valuable? — Ada, Sioux Falls, S.D. I’ve checked with several used book dealers, and they seem to agree that your book is probably worth about $15. *** I have service for eight in Spode china, the fleur-de-lis pattern. What is the current value of this set? — Barbara, Brighton, Mich. You probably can find this pattern referenced at Replacements, Ltd., inquire@replacements.com, and 800-7375223. The company specializes in retired patterns of both crystal and china. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. The White House was first occupied by John Adams, the second US President. Construction began in 1792, and was largely finished by 1800. Initially called the “President’s Palace”, “Presidential Mansion”, or “President’s House”; the earliest recorded case of it being called the “White House” was in 1811. • It was built largely of sandstone, painted white, with some areas being done in brick to cut costs. The original building was influenced by the architecture of the Leinster House, a palace in Dublin, Ireland, though it has now had several major additions. • In 1814, during the War of 1812, the White House was set on fire. All but the exterior walls were destroyed, and most of those had to be rebuilt.

Fredonia’s first gas well was dug in 1821, by William Hart. The town drew enough gas from it to provide lights for two stores, two shops, and a grist mill - all lit by 1825. The Fredonia Gas Light Company was formed in 1858, the very first natural gas company in America.

Polar bears, or “sea bears,” are the world’s largest land predators, weighing up to 1,300 lbs. and measuring up to 10 ft. tall. On average they live to be about 25 years old, reaching sexual maturity at around 4 years. Although they appear white or yellow in color, their fur is actually clear and hollow, and their skin is black. Their visibly pale coloring is caused by the reflection and scattering of light. Inhabiting the ice and sea of the Arctic, polar bears are wellequipped for survival in a harsh environment. Two coats of fur and a thick layer of blubber help insulate the polar bear’s body from the cold, keeping its temperature at an even 37° C (98.6° F). In addition, polar bears’ paws are especially adapted for walking on the ice and swimming in the sea. Hairs and bumps on the soles of their feet provide traction, while webbing between their toes allows for effective swimming strokes. Polar bears do not hibernate like other bears, but females do enter into a dormant state while pregnant.

Applesauce is a treat everyone can enjoy, since it’s naturally fat-free and low in calories. DEER OF THE YEAR

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Machine-spun cotton candy

was invented in 1897 by the dentist William Morrison and confectioner John C. Wharton and first introduced to a wide audience at the 1904 World’s Fair as “Fairy Floss”with great success, selling 68,655 boxes at the then-high price of 25¢, half the cost of admission to the fair. Joseph Lascaux, a dentist from New Orleans, Louisiana, invented a similar cotton candy machine in 1921. In fact, Lascaux patent named the sweet confection “cotton candy” and the “fairy floss” name faded away, although it retains this name in Australia.

DFWSC PENNY SAVER / November 24, 2013

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier NRG is still seeking public support for the proposed conversion of its Dunkirk power plant from coal to natural gas. With the state Public Service Commission expected to make a decision on the plan early in 2014, PowerUpWNY is collecting signatures in its online petition in order to encourage approval. PowerUp WNY is a non-partisan coalition made up of regional businesses, labor, residents, and community leaders who want to see this project approved. There are many benefits for Chautauqua County from the $500-million project: Maintaining a stable tax base countywide, especially for the City of Dunkirk and Dunkirk Public Schools; reducing air emissions from the plant by 99-percent; maintaining a reliable, local source for energy generation; and creating good paying jobs. Repowering the NRG plant in Dunkirk is crucial for achieving energy sufficiency and cost-competitiveness. It is critical that New York State maintain the ability to generate electrical power and identify efficient ways to transmit that power. Without this plant, providers will be importing electricity into our state from facilities that may not be as environmentally friendly or as cost-competitive. The project has broad support across the political spectrum. US Senator Charles Schumer favors the NRG plan, as do Congressman Tom Reed, State Senator Cathy Young, and Assemblyman Andrew Goodell. This past July, thousands of people packed the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia to make their voices heard during a PSC public hearing on the proposal. Everyone from students to senior citizens turned out to support the project. If you did not submit comments through the PSC web site earlier, or even if you did, you can sign on now to the PowerUpWNY web site and make your voice heard. It’s easy to do – just go to www.powerupwny.org and click the link to help/join powerup. You will be asked to submit your zip code and email address, and your signature will be recorded in support of the NRG repowering plan. By signing the message, you’ll join the coalition and send a message to Governor Cuomo, asking him to support the Dunkirk project. Local jobs, our tax base, lower energy costs, a cleaner environment, and a more reliable electrical system in Western New York depend on it.

The new president of Jamestown Community College will be the keynote speaker for the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce 2013 Annual Meeting. Dr. Cory Duckworth was inaugurated as the eighth president of JCC during a ceremony at the Jamestown campus on November first. Prior to his August appointment to JCC he was Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Planning at Utah Valley University and Vice President for University Advancement and Marketing at Ferris State University. He is a graduate of the University of Utah College of Law. He worked as a political science instructor and pre-law advisor at Southern Utah University where he was later Assistant Director of Development. He later worked at Minot State University in North Dakota as Executive Assistant to the President for Planning and Development, Director of the St. Cloud State University Foundation in Minnesota, and Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at UVU. This is a tremendous opportunity for the community to hear from Dr. Duckworth about his goals for Jamestown Community College and its important role in Chautauqua County. The Chamber’s Annual Meeting will be held at noon on Friday, December 6 at Shorewood Country Club, 4958 West Lake Road, Dunkirk. This event is sponsored by Artone, ConAgra Private Brands, Jamestown Community College, OBSERVER, The Post-Journal, and Serta Mattress Company. The cost for lunch is $18 for Chamber members or $21 for nonmembers. You can make reservations through on the Chamber’s web site or by calling the Chamber offices at 3666200 or 484-1101.

The snack called Cracker Jack originated in Chicago and it is thought to be the first snack to use toys in the package to market the product.

The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce works to help drive foot traffic into local businesses, and has added a new initiative this year to improve those efforts! On Small Business Saturday – November 30th – you have a chance to win $300 in Shoptauqua Gift Checks just by visiting local Chamber member businesses. Entry forms will be printed in local newspapers and can be downloaded from the Chamber’s web site at www.chautauquachamber.org. There is no purchase necessary, but you must be 18 to enter. Shoppers simply need to take the form in to a small Chamber member business on Saturday, November 30, and have it signed and dated by an employee of that business. You can find a full list of Chamber members in the Business Directory on our web site. The business must be SMALL and must be open on Small Business Saturday to qualify. Forms must then be returned to the Chamber either by mail or in person at one of the following addresses: 10785 Bennett Road, Dunkirk or 512 Falconer Street, Jamestown. You can enter more than once, as long as each entry form is signed by a different Chamber member business! The prize drawing will be held Thursday, December 19 at the Chamber’s Experience Chautauqua Holiday Networking Event at Webb’s Year Round Resort. Since its inception, the Chamber’s Shoptauqua Gift Check program has had a more than $2-million impact on the local economy. Gift Checks are good at more than 75 businesses countywide including stores, restaurants, spas, and much more! Support our local business, support local jobs and support our local economy, buy local this holiday season!

HURRICANE? CYCLONE? TYPHOON? They’re all the same, officially tropical cyclones. But they just use distinctive terms for a storm in different parts of the world. Hurricane is used in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, central and northeast Pacific. They are typhoons in the northwest Pacific. In the Bay of Bengal and the Arabia Sea, they are called cyclones. Tropical cyclone is used in the southwest India Ocean; in the southwestern Pacific and southeastern India Ocean they are severe tropical cyclones. If they are north of the equator they rotate counterclockwise. If they are south, they rotate clockwise. The Atlantic and central Pacific hurricane seasons are June 1 through Nov. 30. Eastern Pacific: May 15 to Nov. 30; northwestern Pacific season is close to all year, with the most from May to November. The cyclone season in the south Pacific and Australia runs from November to April. The Bay of Bengal has two seasons April to June and September to November.

ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER I am contemplating a move. I am twenty eight years old and was born June 25. Please give any insight? Anonymous. Astrologically you are in the process of experiencing your first Saturn Return. A move during this occurrence via a deep inner desire to move is in agreement with this astrological transition. Making a move now through thirty one may place you in a location which may be in alignment with your heart’s inner desires. This move would also indicate seeing it through and making the highest and best of this chosen possibility. Free will over rides all possibilities in Astrology as well as it does within all choices made through eternity. Free Will may always come into action/play via initiating and incorporating it. Your spirit guides; spirit teachers; and grand father’s spirit step in here now giving you unconditional love and light. Firstly, they are expressing there has been a “major” break up with and another person within a romantic relationship. They go on by relaying you have not been able to find/allow another person to romantically walk with you since this break up. Secondly, they are relaying the move you are considering may find you at a great distance from where you are currently living- with the probability being out of state- as indicated via your spirit’s communication with them. They go on by relaying you have applied and been accepted to several job positions in both the south and the south west. They continue by relaying, surveying all situations, the south west is strongly indicated for both the career placement which may allow you to allow yourself to be the happiest and for the highest and best possibility for connecting with a romantic partner; life mate; spouse. Thirdly, they relay the area you have been thinking the strongest about located in the south west also has colleges which may allow you to pursue even higher education and higher degrees which they relay you have already earned and obtained. Your spirit teachers, spirit guides, and your grand father’s spirit depart now by placing you and your path in white light and unconditional love upon your acceptance. Upon reviewing what your spirit loved ones brought through to you; astrologically it enhances the contemplation of your first Saturn Return. Saturn is said to be an old soul teacher and acts to assist us for our spirit’s highest and best even when it does not appear to be doing so to our limited perception. When “things” or “people are taken away from us during our Saturn Returns or when they or their positions remain vacant; it is up to our Free Will to fill them with “things” or “people” which may best serve our spirit’s highest and best via making the choice(s) in order to allow our highest and best’s desired outcomes to manifest within our life. Choices made during any one of our Saturn Returns is said to have monumental and possibly life lasting effects; this is said to be valid when our choices are well thought through; making a new conscious choice(s) and taking new action based on those choices in order to let go of the past. The new choices we are making are to be chosen to be new choices which reflect our desired outcome(s) and via taking new action which is in alignment with our spirit’s highest and best’s desire(s). You may write your questions to Dennis for consideration to: or go to his Web Site at: and send him an e-mail directly from there specifying you are requesting Dennis to use your question for this article and indicate you give Dennis permission to use your question. You can also set up individual appointments from there as well.

Non-Edible Cinnamon Ornaments * 1 cup ground cinnamon * 1 tablespoon ground cloves * 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg * 3/4 cup applesauce * 2 tablespoons glue 1. In a medium bowl, stir together the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Mix in the applesauce and glue. Work the mixture with your hands 2 to 3 minutes to form a ball. If mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon. If mixture is too dry, add more applesauce. 2. Lightly dust a clean surface with cinnamon. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, and use a toothpick to make a hole at the top for hanging with a ribbon. 3. Dry in a slow oven 200 degrees F (100 degrees C) for several hours, or air dry in a sunny spot for 4 or 5 days. When dry, decorate with gingham and/ or ribbon.

10 Fun Facts About TIGERS

The stripes on each tiger are unique, like human fingerprints. Tigers do not normally view humans as prey, but will attack if threatened. Most cases of purposeful human predation are due to lack of a tiger’s normal prey species due to habitat loss. Tigers cannot purr. To show happiness, tigers squint or close their eyes. This is because losing vision lowers defense, so tigers (and many other cats) only purposefully do so when they feel comfortable and safe. Bears make up a part of the diet of many tigers, due to overlapping habitats. Sometimes tigers will imitate the sound of a bear’s prey to lure unsuspecting bears towards them. Tigers live for about 25 years both in captivity and in the wild. There are only about 3,500 tigers left in the wild. There are a greater number in captivity. Tigers are solitary animals and only group together either when permitted by a large kill or in the case of a mother with cubs. Tigers have color vision like humans. Tigers have antiseptic saliva. They lick their wounds to disinfect them. Just like housecats, the markings on a tiger’s fur are also found on their skin, so even a shaved tiger would still show its stripes.

Leaves of Gratitude for Thanksgiving Day What does “home” mean to you? Is it four walls, or is it more? To me, home is built on those tiny exchanges that tell us we care for each other no matter what. Think about the things we do: a hug on the way to work or the bus stop in the morning; a vote of confidence, particularly when there’s a big test that day; the simple words, “I love you, Mom.” The Thanksgiving season can help us bring into focus these gestures we often take for granted. It offers an opportunity to express thanks not only for food, shelter and security, but also for the little things family members do for each other day after day.

Here’s a simple and meaningful way to express your “thanks,” family-style: Make a “What I’m Thankful For” arrangement using branches, sticks and cut-out paper leaves. Here’s how: Arrange two or three small bare branches in florist foam in a vase or attractive container. Or, poke the branches into the top center of a mini pumpkin. (If the pumpkin is too hard, hammer a thin

26 DFW

nail into the pumpkin and remove. Repeat to create several holes for the branches. Glue branches in place.) Glue small nature finds to the branches such as mini pinecones, berries, moss or pods. Meanwhile, cut out 2inch-by-3-inch leaf shapes from colored construction paper. Use a real leaf or leafshaped cookie cutter for a pattern. Punch small holes in the paper leaves, attach a ribbon or wire and place them in a basket. As guests arrive at your home on Thanksgiving Day, give each person a leaf and a pen. Ask them to write their name on one side and a short statement showing appreciation for people present at the gathering or something they appreciate in their lives on the other. For example, “I am thankful for Grandmother’s pumpkin pie every year” or “I’m thankful Uncle John emails me in college.” Hang the leaves one by one on the branches to create a centerpiece of gratitude at the buffet or dinner table.

VA Oversight The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held hearings recently about conference planning spending by officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Planning trips to Nashville, Dallas and Orlando, meant to scope out locations for training conferences, turned into lovely, overpriced vacations for some. Here are some of the highlights of testimony given to the committee: • Multiple employees accepted gifts: A big nono, especially as the gifts appeared to be given in exchange for hotel bookings for conferences. Among the gifts accepted were: complimentary lodging and upgraded rooms, gift baskets, entertainment tickets, spa treatments and a helicopter ride. Employees didn’t deduct the value of the free meals, as required. One planner apparently solicited goodies for his family, which he brought to the conference. • Approximately $762,000 was labeled as unnecessary and/or wasteful spending as the amount included promo items and awards, some of which had a value of up to $5,500.

• Conference spending was approved based on 3,000 attendees, but only 1,800 showed up. A factoid: Conferences that will cost between $20,000 and $500,000 need varying levels of approval in advance, all the way up the chain. Conferences costing more than $500,000 aren’t allowed. How is it then that two Orlando conferences cost $6.1 million? How did the tab for a Las Vegas conference exceed $800,000? One investigator went so far as to say that one specific official lied under oath, a fact bolstered by witnesses. They’d spent $50,000 for a 15-minute parody film about Gen. George Patton, but that official said he had no knowledge of it. He subsequently resigned. At the hearing he repeatedly refused to answer questions. As usual, we’re told that they’ll do better, they’ve taken steps, they’ll have more oversight, they’ll retrain personnel and so on. Haven’t we heard that before? Over and over and over? Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible.
