Adjusting a Pilot Light

I have an older gas furnace in my home upstairs that works very well, but I haven’t had it maintained it in a few years. I think the pilot light looks weak, but there’s no setting for a higher flame. How can I improve the pilot light flame? — Nancy in Buffalo, N.Y. There is a way to control the height of the pilot light flame. Next to the “Pilot” indicator on the furnace’s control switch, there is a small screw located near the pilot light-thermocouple assembly. I’ll typically shine a small flashlight and use a magnifying glass to read the imprinted type on the control housing to make sure that’s the right screw. With the pilot light burning, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to carefully turn the screw one way and then the other, watching the pilot light to see if it gets stronger or weaker. The flame should be angling toward a nearby object that looks like a small vertical pipe: This is called the thermocouple, an important safety device. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple detects it and shuts the valve supplying gas to the pilot. The pilot flame should touch the thermocouple at a specific level. If the flame

is blue and weak, and barely reaches the thermocouple, it needs to be stronger. If it extends well above the thermocouple, it’s too strong. If the flame covers the top of the thermocouple and burns steadily with a yellow tip, that’s just about right. What if the pilot light won’t stay lighted? If the assembly looks OK, turn off the gas supply at the nearest valve and try heating the thermocouple using a match for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then relight the pilot. If that doesn’t work, replace the thermocouple by carefully unscrewing it from the control housing using an open-ended wrench, being careful not to ding or bend the supply pipe or the pilotlight assembly. Install a new thermocouple by screwing it in, heating it up a bit, and then lighting the pilot. Keep in mind that this task can be a little frustrating, because you’re almost always working in a cramped, hard-to-access spot. Be patient and take frequent breaks if necessary, rather than compromise safety or damage the unit. • On Aug. 11, 1856, a hurricane hits Isle Derniere, a resort community on the Louisiana coast, killing more than 400 people. The storm first brought blinding and torrential rain, then storm surges and finally a tidal wave. Upward of 150 people were carried off with the wave, with some bodies ending up 6 miles away. • On Aug. 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution in history by electrocution is carried out against William Kemmler. It didn’t go as planned. With the first charge, the current failed. A second charge was required for two minutes before Kemmler was declared deceased. • On Aug. 7, 1944, under the threat of Allied bombing during World War II, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen halts production of the “Beetle.” Volkswagen, under the control of the British military, began turning out Beetles again in December 1945. • On Aug. 5, 1957, rock ‘n’ roll television show “American Bandstand” goes national with teens dancing and rating records on a scale

the country. Dick Clark was host, a slot he held for 27 years. • On Aug. 9, 1969, members of Charles Manson’s cult kill five people in movie director Roman Polanski’s Beverly Hills, Calif., home, including Polanski’s pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate. Polanski was not the cult leader’s intended target. Manson, an aspiring musician, chose the Polanski house because he had once unsuccessfully tried to get a recording deal from a producer who used to live there. • On Aug. 10, 1978, three teenage girls die after their 1973 Ford Pinto is rammed from behind by a van and bursts into flames. • “My father taught me all I know about working the grill — even though it was his job! The tip that’s served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it lifts away from the grill. If it’s sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling.” — JoAnn • “Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a goodquality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I find it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!” — B.F. in Illinois • Grilled meats will be moister and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes after you take them

off the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil. • “It’s best to clean a grill just after cooking, but if you weren’t able to, that’s OK. When faced with a messy grill surface, just preheat, then clean. The heat will burn off drippings and make it easier to scrub.” — R.T. in Florida • You should never use a cooking spray on your grill. gives audiences that sense of adventure people get from reading Huckleberry Finn. The Place Beyond the Pines (R) — This intriguing and serious flick has two Alist actors at the top of their games. The story comes in three parts. The first follows, Luke (Ryan Gosling), a motorcycle stunt-driver with the traveling circus, who finds out that he has an infant son with a small-town girl. Luke takes up bank robbery to support his child. The movie then becomes about Avery (Bradley Cooper), a calculating young cop whose life hits a turning point when he encounters

PICKS OF THE WEEK Oblivion (PG-13) — Tom Cruise stars as a futuristic repairman on an abandoned Earth. After alien attackers messed up the environment, most of humanity evacuated the planet. Cruise zips around Earth in a little starship, fixing robots and keeping leftover aliens from attacking important equipment. He’s plagued by mysterious dreams about Earth before the attack — but the attack was before he was born, so its probably nothing ... This movie suffers from too much inspiration and not enough originality. 10 Fun Facts About TIGERS

The stripes on each tiger are unique, like human fingerprints. Tigers do not normally view humans as prey, but will attack if threatened. Most cases of purposeful human predation are due to lack of a tiger’s normal prey species due to habitat loss. Tigers cannot purr. To show happiness, tigers squint or close their eyes. This is because losing vision lowers defense, so tigers (and many other cats) only purposefully do so when they feel comfortable and safe. Bears make up a part of the diet of many tigers, due to overlapping habitats. Sometimes tigers will imitate the sound of a bear’s prey to lure unsuspecting bears towards them. Tigers live for about 25 years both in captivity and in the wild. There are only about 3,500 tigers left in the wild. There are a greater number in captivity. Tigers are solitary animals and only group together either when permitted by a large kill or in the case of a mother with cubs. Tigers have color vision like humans. Tigers have antiseptic saliva. They lick their wounds to disinfect them. Just like housecats, the markings on a tiger’s fur are also found on their skin, so even a shaved tiger would still show its stripes.

GREAT BARRIER REEF The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 1,600 miles. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It can be seen from outer space and is the world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.

The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

This deal occurred in a pair championship. The contract at every table was three notrump, and in each case declarer failed to make it. However, subsequent analysis showed that the contract should have been made. The play was fairly uniform at the various tables. West led a heart, and declarer won East’s jack with the queen. After cashing four club tricks, declarer led either a spade or a diamond. West took the ace of whichever suit was led and returned the king of hearts. South could now have cashed eight tricks, but at some tables, when he attempted to establish a ninth trick, West took his other ace and ran his hearts to put the

contract down two. All the plays seem so normal that it is difficult to see where declarer went wrong. But the fact is that each declarer missed an opportunity to make the contract. The winning play is to allow East to win the opening heart lead with the jack! Once South does this, the contract cannot be stopped. Let’s assume East returns a diamond. West takes the ace, but what can he do next? If he returns a heart, declarer scores the queen and finishes with 10 tricks; with any other return, South drives out the spade ace and winds up with nine tricks. It can be argued that ducking the jack of hearts is easy to do when all 52 cards are in view, but actually the play can be supported by simple logic. It is certainly reasonable to credit West with both missing aces as well as a six-card suit for his vulnerable overcall. Furthermore, the sixcard suit must be assumed since the contract cannot be made if West has only five hearts (and both aces), whether or not declarer wins the first heart. All indications thus point clearly to ducking the jack of hearts at trick one.

The pink represents the unconditional love which you are seeking from others- as well as a romantic love which you are seeking from one other. I am being requested to remind you, to please, please, open your self up at all levels in order to receive the love you are seeking and requesting. I am being advised the tattoo across your stomach represent knowledge and wisdom. The misspelling represents the need for you to allow your self and others ( especially a romantic other, to be able to be “human” and to be able to make mistakes- for this is how we learn and what we learn from ). I am being asked to relay this to you- “ the two most wrong persons” are able to create the “right” relationship as long as both parties are “working” at accomplishing this/ the common desired outcome as defined by both parties. I am also hearing this means each person must allow the other person the ability and capability to do so. I am being told if we were perfect there would be no need to be a spirit walking in body on the face of mother earth. The lack of current pictures represents possibilities for you ( each of us ) to create Our Own Desired Outcomes. It is via Our choices; which then lead to our actions/or lack there from. I am asked to remind you...when you lift a prayer(s) to the Creator/God, please allow for God to answer your prayer(s) in God’s knowing, instead of taking it back in case it isn’t being worked on- or in case you desire to investigate ( as a child might ), to see if the prayer has been forgotten. Consider instead to choose a state Gratitude. Your Spirit Guides and Spirit Teachers move forward on their chosen sojourn leaving you with much Light and Unconditional Love. You may write your questions to Dennis for consideration to: or go to his Web Site and send him an at: e-mail directly from there specifying you are requesting Dennis to use your question for this article and indicate you give Dennis permission to use your question. Did you know... Dinosaur remains have been found on every continent on Earth, including Antarctica. The term “dinosaur” was coined in 1842 and roughly means “terrible lizard” by English paleontologist Richard Owen. The Chinese word for dinosaur is “konglong” which means “terrible dragon”. The smallest dinosaurs were about the size of a chicken. The largest dinosaurs were over 50 feet tall and 100 feet long.

The Jam, in 1980. The lyrics comment on the British arms policy and the spending of public dollars on weapons instead of social programs. 2. James Brown. The song’s full title was “Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants).” It was a three-part single. 3. “Does Your Mother Know,” an older man’s responses to the flirting of a younger girl. 4. The Rolling Stones, in 1969. The opening track on their “Let It Bleed” album, it was never released as a single. 5. “Along Came Jones,” by The Coasters in 1959. The joke song is about damsels in distress on television shows, all rescued by “Jones.” Salty Sam was the villain in each case. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

SCORPIO: Emotions may be at an increased peak for over reacting through the twenty-ninth;

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier For decades the Chamber of Commerce has helped businesses and their employees access health insurance. Our members have looked to the Chamber to navigate through a multitude of changes that have occurred within the insurance market over the years to provide the best possible options to our members, and we continue to work to meet those objectives. The Affordable Care Act will bring significant changes to the insurance market. Businesses with 50 or fewer employees will see the most dramatic changes as we approach January 1, 2014. New York State will have a public exchange that will serve businesses, sole proprietors, and individuals. In addition, there will continue to be —2— options available outside of the public exchange. health insurance There will be a lot of choices to sort through. The Chamber will help you understand your health insurance options both within the exchange and outside of the exchange. The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce has been a strong voice in Albany to help develop an overall health insurance market that meets the needs of business and the community. We advocated for choice and affordability and we have been successful. We encouraged development of an exchange that stimulates competition among carriers and we have been successful. We opposed decisions that would have driven up the cost of health insurance for small businesses and we have been successful. We advocated for maintaining a strong and viable insurance market outside of the exchange and we have been successful. We have also advocated on behalf of Chambers and brokers to make sure the state recognizes their historic significance in advising businesses and allows them to continue to be a part of the health insurance distribution system, and we have been successful. In the next few months we will learn more about the 1. It’s said that snacking on potassium-rich bananas can help beat high blood pressure. The reason for this is that it speeds up the rate at which salt is excreted from your body.

Boarding Cats DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re headed off on vacation, and I would like my cat to be cared for during the two weeks we’re gone. I don’t know a reliable pet sitter whom I can trust to come into my house. Is there such a thing as kennels for cats? — June in New Orleans DEAR JUNE: There are boarding facilities that will take cats as well as other pets. I prefer to use facilities that are exclusively for cats, but not everyone has that option available in their area. Still, call around to several facilities. Even if none cater just to cats, look for one that has a living and play area completely segregated from other types of pets. One of my favorite places offered each cat a private “cubby” with scratching post and shelf. There were no bars or fence grates. Instead, each cubby had a clear plastic door so caretakers could see each cat, and a one-way-glass wall with a view of a park. Dur-

ing the day, they were taken to a common area to socialize with other cats, and the facility was attached to a veterinarian’s office. Contrast that with a boarding facility I found in another region when trying to board my cat. It was mainly for dogs, with a small room full of metal cages for “other” pets, including cats, rabbits and so on. The pets all looked stressed out, especially as the constant barking from the dogs’ play area reverberated into their living area. That’s why it’s important to personally visit each facility you’re considering, so you get a feel of the place. It’ll help make the experience better for your cat. If you can’t find one that works, please reconsider the pet sitter. Send your questions or comments to ask@ Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fleas don’t? The U.S. Supreme Court was created in 1789 by Article III of the U.S. Constitution. It has remained at nine members since 1869. The current justices are: Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen G. Breyer, Samuel A. Alito, Elena Kagan, Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Only four presidents were unable to appoint at least one justice: William Henry Harrison died a month after taking office, though his successor (John Tyler) made an appointment during that presidential term. Zachary Taylor likewise died early in his term, although his successor (Millard Fillmore) also made a Supreme Court nomination before the end of that term. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded to the presidency after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was denied the opportunity to appoint a justice by a contraction in the size of the Court. Jimmy Carter is the only president who completed at least one full term in office without making a nomination to the Court during his presidency. Three presidents have appointed justices who collectively served more than 100 years: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln.

John Stamos Bet you didn’t know that Tom Cruise passed on playing Tony Stark in the “Iron Man” franchise? Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage wanted the role, but producers passed, so he starred in “Ghost Rider” instead. Quentin Tarantino was originally set to direct “Iron Man,” whose alter ego, Tony Stark, was based on the very rich and mysterious Howard Hughes, who

was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Aviator.” And finally, Robert Downey, Jr. will play Tony Stark/Iron Man in “The Avengers 2 and 3.” But have no fears, since “Iron Man” only cost $200 million and grossed $1.2 billion, there undoubtedly will be an “Iron Man 4.” *** A Super Bowl commercial for Greek yogurt has stirred up a new career for John Stamos, whom we first met when he played Blackie Parrish on “General Hospital” in 1983. After “Full House,” Stamos played drums for The Beach Boys when they toured. He currently is going to produce a film about the popular California group with John Cusack as Brian Wilson and Paul Giamatti as his therapist. Stamos, who turns 50 on Aug. 19, also has been added to the cast of season three of USA’s “Necessary Roughness,” and will portray a playboy in the October release of “My Man Is a Loser.” Who’d ever think that yogurt would not only be good for a body, but also incredible for a career! © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

film, with Oscar-winners Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. Damon has been itching to find the right project to direct, not to be outdone by his good friend Ben Affleck.

King Features Weekly Service

HOLLYWOOD — Matt Damon, last seen on the small screen as Liberace’s boy toy in HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” will explode onto the big screen in three pictures before the year ends. August 9 will bring the $90 million science-fiction epic “Elysium” with Jody Foster. The film is about a high-tech utopian metropolis located in orbit around the Earth in the year 2154. “Elysium” began shooting in July 2011 in Vancouver and Mexico City, but like “World War Z,” needed some reshooting in October 2012. Damon shaved his head for this one. We’ll see Matt again starting Dec. 18 in “Monuments Men” with George Clooney, (who’s also producing with Grant Heslov, and directing), Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Bill Murray, “The Artist” Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin and “Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville. Some of the World War II military scenes could reach epic proportions with a cast of thousands. Then on Dec. 20, Damon will hit screens in “The Zero Theorem,” yet another sci/fi

worried that he wouldn’t remember their connection. Rafe was upset when he learned that Sami killed his friend Bernardi. Wait to See: Sonny refuses to forgive his mother.
