NFL “FREEZER BOWL and “ICE BOWL” The Freezer Bowl, played January 10, 1982 was the 1981 AFC Championship Game between the San Diego Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The game, played at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium, was won by the Bengals, 27–7. It was played in the coldest temperature in NFL history in terms of wind chill. (The coldest in terms of air temperature was the Ice Bowl.) Air temperature was −9 °F (−23 °C), but the wind chill, factoring in a sustained wind of 27 miles per hour (43 km/h), was −37 °F. ~~~~ At "The Ice Bowl", the game-time temperature at Lambeau Field was about −15 °F (−26 °C), with an average wind chill around −48 °F (−44 °C). Lambeau Field's turf-heating system malfunctioned, and when the tarpaulin was removed from the field before the game, it left moisture on the field, which flash-froze in the extreme cold, leaving an icy surface that got worse as more and more of the field fell into the shadow of the stadium. The prior convention to prevent the football field from icing up was to cover the field with dozens of tons of hay.

He would chuck, he would, as much as he could, and chuck as much wood, as a woodchuck would if a woodchuck could chuck wood. • She sells sea shells by the seashore. Difficult: • Silly Sally swiftly shooed seven silly sheep. The seven silly sheep Silly Sally shooed Shilly-shallied south. These sheep shouldn't sleep in a shack; Sheep should sleep in a shed. • The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick. [According to The Guinness Book of World Records this is the toughest tongue twister - so far.] Easy: • He threw three free throws. • I slit the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit. • If you notice this notice, you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing. • Nine nice night nurses nursing nicely. • I like New York, unique New York, I like unique New York. • Four fine fresh fish for you. • A proper cup of coffee from a proper copper coffee pot.

FACTS ABOUT TEA • Tea was discovered by accident in 2737 B.C. when dried leaves fell into a pot of boiling water meant for the emperor of China Shen Nung. • One 32oz McDonald’s sweet tea had as much sugar as 2.5 Snickers bars! • In the Victorian era, they had special tea cups that protected your mustache from getting dunked in your tea. • Tea is the most popular manufactured drink in the world in terms of consumption. Its consumption equals all other manufactured drinks in the world. • International Tea Day is observed annually on December 15. • Ricola throat lozenges can be dissolved in boiling water to create an aromatic tisane, or “herbal tea.” • All the tea in China is worth about $9.4 billion. • Arnold Palmer drank iced tea with lemonade at home, and in 1960 at the U.S. Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club, he ordered the drink at the bar. A woman sitting nearby overheard him, and ordered “that Palmer drink”, thus giving the beverage its name. • British tanks are required to have a tea brewing station. • Green tea contains chemicals that will seep through pores to repel mosquitoes.

The squirrels are out hunting As they scamper from limb to limb. Also the coyotes are heard howling Sounding nearly like a hymn. Willy Woodchuck will soon arrive As he leaves his hibernation hole Possibly to see his shadow And if winter has taken its toll. Spring will slowly make a showing Soon returning birds will nest and sing As we survived another winter And be grateful to welcome another spring. Until that time we’ll wait patiently Through snow storms and come what may. It will be quite some time Before we enjoy a beautiful spring day. Fireside Poetry by Old Andy Wingeier Sr.

An average person would weigh about half a pound more at the Equator than at the North or South Pole.

Is anybody happier because you passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along? Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng? Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way, Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today? Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that's slipping fast, That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said; Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? Did you waste the day, or lose it, was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent? As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God would say, You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?

IRS WILL BEGIN ACCEPTING RETURNS VALENTINE’S DAY ASSOCIATION MONDAY, JANUARY 29, 2018 WITH CHOCOLATE

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service announced today that the nation's tax season will begin Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 and reminded taxpayers claiming certain tax credits that refunds won't be available before late February. The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 29, with nearly 155 million individual tax returns expected to be filed in 2018. The nation's tax deadline will be April 17 this year – so taxpayers will have two additional days to file beyond April 15. Many software companies and tax professionals will be accepting tax returns before Jan. 29 and then will submit the returns when IRS systems open. Although the IRS will begin accepting both electronic and paper tax returns Jan. 29, paper returns will begin processing later in mid-February as system updates continue. The IRS strongly encourages people to file their tax returns electronically for faster refunds. The IRS set the Jan. 29 opening date to ensure the security and readiness of key tax processing systems in advance of the opening and to assess the potential impact of tax legislation on 2017 tax returns. The IRS reminds taxpayers that, by law, the IRS cannot issue refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. While the IRS will process those returns when received, it cannot issue related refunds before mid-February. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards starting on Feb. 27, 2018, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return. The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they should keep copies of their prior-year tax returns for at least three years. Taxpayers who are using a tax software product for the first time will need their adjusted gross income from their 2016 tax return to file electronically. Taxpayers who are using the same tax software they used last year will not need to enter prior-year information to electronically sign their 2017 tax return. Using an electronic filing PIN is no longer an option. Taxpayers can visit IRS.gov/GetReady for more tips on preparing to file their 2017 tax return.

Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them. In his 1382 poem, “Parlement of Foules,” English poet Geoffrey Chaucer became the first to connect romance with St. Valentine’s Day. Over the next several centuries, the day’s connection to romance only grew stronger, and by the Victorian era in England, it was not uncommon for lovers to profess their affections through songs, poetry and even the giving of roses as gifts. It was during the Victorian era that British chocolate manufacturer Richard Cadbury began searching for ways to use the cocoa butter that his company was extracting during the production of their drinking chocolate. In 1861, Cadbury decided to produce edible chocolates, which he even sold and marketed in heart-shaped boxes decorated with images of Cupid and rosebuds. It would be a few more decades before edible chocolates caught on in the United States, where they remain a must-have item for many Valentine’s Day celebrants more than 150 years after Cadbury first began selling them.

Your spirit teachers and spirit guides each step forward now in order to assist you with your above inquiry. They are each filling you and your spiritual path with the white light and their unconditional love in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth which you are currently seeking for your self and your spiritual path. Firstly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, consider choosing to not only learn from the easily accessible moments of life, chose also, to allow your self to learn from from what you consider to be life’s difficult moments. Secondly, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, both of the previously mentioned possibilities offer opportunities to learn and or to open doors in order for your capability to move forward. Thirdly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, consider choosing to not only move beyond self created illusions, consider choosing to longer create illusions, and consider choosing to utilize your time to create the reality which expresses the “who” you are, and, the “who” you desire to be. Fourthly, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, imagination is a gift which your spirit gives to your self via Free Will, when, you allow your self to utilize this gift. They continue by relaying, imagination is capable of opening many seemingly locked doors when you allow your self to appropriately utilize it. Fifthly, your spirit guides and spirit teachers relay, consider choosing to say to your self, silently, and or, out loud, this is my desire and I am allowing this possibility(ies) to become a part of your life’s possibility(ies). Sixth, your spirit teachers and spirit guides relay, when there is something within your current reality which no longer works for you, know your are able to move beyond this point by making a new and or different choice(s). Seventh, consider choosing to keep in mind, “you are the captain of your own vessel/life;” your life as you know it, is self created and is able to move into the direction your Free Will chooses. Your spirit guides and and spirit teachers each step back as it were; they are each filling your spiritual path with their unconditional love and the White Light in order to assist you with their understanding for the truth and understanding which you are currently seeking. WATER GLASS BAROMETER

A water barometer or storm glass is used to predict stormy weather. It works because of changes in atmospheric pressure. It is usually made with a glass container that has a sealed body and a narrow spout. The spout connects to the body below the water level, which should fill the body halfway. The top of the spout is above the water level and open. When air pressure sinks lower than when the body was sealed with water, the water level in the spout rises above the level in the body.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an expression of allegiance to the Flag of the United States and the republic of the United States of America, originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892. The original Pledge of Allegiance is as follows: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. In 1923, the National Flag Conference called for the words "my Flag" to be changed to "the Flag of the United States", so that new immigrants would not confuse loyalties between their birth countries and the United States. The words "of America" were added a year later. Congress officially adopted this version on June 22, 1942: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The phrase “Under God” was added on June 14, 1954 by a Joint Resolution of Congress.

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier

Small Cities are an important component of the fabric of our society. Cities present a sense of community, they are commercial hubs, they are cultural centers and for many they are a place to live. The City of Dunkirk has certainly had its share of challenges over the past several decades. However there is a renewed spirit in the City of Dunkirk. The leadership of Mayor Rosas, an energetic and visionary development team, private sector investments, energized community leaders along with investments from New York State have created momentum. There is a renewed enthusiasm in Western New York. Regional collaboration, improved planning, public investments such as the Buffalo Billion, private sector investments, hard work and yes the Bills returning to the playoffs after a too long hiatus, are all ingredients of a major regional turnaround. Last week Mayor Rosas presented the State of the City address to a packed City Council Chambers that included a wide variety of community stakeholders. There is no doubt that there is optimism, a direction and clear progress occurring in the City of Dunkirk. Private investments such as those made by Fieldbrook Foods and public-private partnerships such as the repowering of NRG and Athenex and emerging plans to leverage the beauty of the Lake Erie shoreline, are putting wind behind the sails of the City of Dunkirk and greater Dunkirk area. The Dunkirk community has confidence in its Mayor and his team. His ability to bring people together to address the City’s most pressing issues and collaborate with community organizations has brought a diversity of voices to the discussion. In challenging fiscal times for New York’s small cities it is notable that Dunkirk closes out the 2017 fiscal year with a budget surplus of $1.3-milllion. As health insurance costs for most public and private organizations are on the rise The City of Dunkirk experienced a $125,000 reduction in costs in its health care expenses and a projects a $300,000 savings over the next two years. This is the result of the City of Dunkirk entering a labor-management health care fund administrated by Lawley Benefits Group. The City has worked collaboratively with the Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation and Southern Tier Environments for Living to address housing opportunities in the community. Dunkirk with the leadership of Mayor Rosa has leveraged the capacity of the city’s water system to anchor the construction of a regional water system to help surrounding community’s access reliable and safe water. These and many other positive steps forward in Dunkirk foster interest from private investors and are very encouraging to the business community.

The Fredonia Community Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, February 8 at the Fredonia Beaver Club. Awards will be presented as follows: Business of the Year, Domus Fare; Retailer of the Year, Concord Pharmacy; Community Service, Lakeshore Humane Society; Service to Humanity, Partners in Kind; Spirit of Fredonia, Melanie Mann; and Lifetime Achievement, Dick Golden. This event will open with a cocktail hour at 5:30, with dinner to be served at 6:30. The cost is $30 per person. Event registration is available on the Chamber website at www.chautauquachamber.org or by calling the Chamber at (716) 366-6200.

The Fredonia Community Chamber of Commerce and Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce invite you to attend an Experience Chautauqua Business After Hours networking event at EBC West, 34 West Main Street, Fredonia. This event will take place from 5-6:30pm on Thursday, February 22. You can enjoy appetizers and a cash bar. Bring a business card to be eligible for door prize drawings. The cost is just $13 for preregistered Chamber members or $15 for non-members or walk-ins at the door. To register, call the Chamber at (716) 366-6200 or sign up online at www.chautauquachamber.org/events.

Mark your calendar now to attend the annual Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce Federal Congressional Luncheon on March 2. We encourage members to come with questions for Congressman Tom Reed during this event. The venue will be announced soon.

Businesses that help to support the annual Chautauqua County 4-H Green Tie Affair will be eligible to win a $200 Shoptauqua Gift Card from the Chamber of Commerce this year. Those that purchase a $200 table sponsorship for the event will be entered into a drawing to be held at the event, Sunday, February 24 at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville. WHY DOES THE GLUE NOT STICK TO THE INSIDE OF THE BOTTLE? Glue is a solid that is dissolved in a solvent. As the solvent evaporates, the solid sets. If the solution is not exposed to the air, the solvent will not evaporate, and the glue will remain fluid. Glue will stick to the bottle if exposed to the air.
