Are You an MVP? The Department of Veterans Affairs has been working on a huge database to study how genes affect health. The project is going to be huge when finished. The VA Office of Research & Development has now passed the 100,000 mark in the number of volunteer veterans who have signed up to be part of the program. Within the next six years, it expects more than 1 million veterans to sign up. The Million Veteran Program (MVP) is designed to be a database accessible by researchers who are studying all the diseases and illnesses that have struck veterans through the years: diabetes, cancer, post traumatic stress disorder, heart disease and others. The goals are to learn new ways of treating and preventing illnesses, discover why certain individuals are more prone to developing certain diseases and to study why certain medicines work better than others. Participation is easy. You’ll fill out a form, allow access to your VA medical records, provide a blood

sample, take a test for grip strength and lung function, and not much more. For more information, go online to www.research. va.gov/MVP. Additionally, there’s a video at the site if you want to learn more about MVP. Privacy is a big deal. No researcher will have access to your name, address, birth date or Social Security number. They’ll use bar codes on your samples so you’re not identified. Insurance companies won’t have any access to the data. There are 40 sign-up locations across the country, listed and linked on the website. If you receive health care at one of those sites, you can schedule an appointment by calling 1-866-441-6075, or talk to your local clinic. A study visit only takes about 20 minutes. Will you be one of the million who helps this project? Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to column reply@gmail.com.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball club based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They play in the Central Division of the National League, and are fivetime World Series champions. The franchise joined the National League in its sixth season in 1887 and was competitive from its early years, winning three National League titles from 1901 to 1903, playing in the very first World Series in 1903 and winning their first World Series in 1909 behind Honus Wagner. The Pirates have had many ups and downs during their long history, most famously winning the 1960 World Series on a game winning homerun by Bill Mazeroski, the only time that Game 7 of the World Series has ever ended with a home run. They also won the 1971 World Series behind Roberto Clemente and the 1979 World Series under the slogan “We Are Family”, led by “Pops” Willie Stargell.

Time... “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~Steve Jobs

When it comes to shredded meat, you can’t beat flank steak. For optimal shredding, cut it cross-wise, against the grain, in 2-inch pieces. 1 large red onion 1 1/2 pounds flank steak, cut crosswise into 4 pieces 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder (optional) 1/2 pineapple (about 2 pounds), peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch pieces Kosher salt and pepper 1 jalapeno pepper (seeded for less heat, if desired), thinly sliced 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 avocado, diced 1/2 cup fresh cilantro 8 small flour tortillas, warmed 1. Chop 3/4 of the onion and refrigerate the rest until ready to use. In a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker, toss chopped onion, beef, chili powder, ancho chili powder (if using), half the pineapple, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. 2. Cook, covered, until meat is tender and shreds easily, 7 to 8 hours on low or 4 to 5 hours on high. 3. When beef has 25 minutes left to cook, thinly slice remaining onion. In a medium bowl, toss onion, jalapeno, lime juice, remaining pineapple and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper; fold in avocado and cilantro. 4. Using two forks, shred meat, then stir into cooking liquid. Fill tortillas with beef mixture; top with pineapple salsa. Our common playing cards are in truth a symbolic representation of our calendar that has been used for centuries to work with planetary motion and earth’s cycles. If one but notices how all the numeric values in a deck of cards match our calendar perfectly, it becomes apparent that our common deck of cards are not so common after all. 52 Cards = 52 weeks 4 suits = 4 seasons 13 cards in each suit = the 13 lunar cycles (full and new moons) 364 / 7 days in the week = 52 cards in a deck But the real clincher is when we add up the numeric, or spot, value of each card in the deck. The entire deck added together comes to 364. But with the addition of the Joker, which is considered to have a spot value of 1.25, we get 365.25, exactly the number of days in our calendar year.

I love getting homemade cards and personalized notes from my kids, don’t you? But sometimes they need a little extra prodding — a bit of help to get the creativity flowing. If you have young children in your house, give them a “Create a Card” kit this week for some do-it-yourself valentines. You’ll be giving a little gift to get another heartfelt gift started. If you’re a grandparent, assemble inexpensive mini kits for each of your school-age grandchildren (as a hint, hint: “I’d love a homemade card from you”). Send the assembled kits in the mail, and who knows, you might in turn find a surprise “craft with a heart” delivered to YOUR address come Feb. 14. Here’s how: A Valentine-making starter kit in a box might contain red, pink and white construction paper, lace or paper doilies and a small bag or tin can filled with valentine stickers, cut-outs from vintage valentine cards, conversation heart candy, buttons, pieces from old jewelry, sewing trim such as rickrack and ribbon, glitter, etc. Add a new marker in a fun color, a pair of decorative-edge scissors from a craft store and a new glue stick. Tuck in envelopes and some postage stamps, too.

The longest bone in the human body is the femur. The largest artery is the aorta and the largest vein is the inferior vena cava. The largest internal organ is the liver. It is also the heaviest organ, with an average of 3.5 pounds. The largest external organ, which is also the largest organ in general, is the skin. The longest muscle is the sartorius. The longest single nerve is the sciatic nerve in the thigh, counting its branches and axons.

Jeff Burton Gets Fresh Start With ‘Gen 6’ Chevy Jeff Burton, driver of the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, met with the media during a recent test session at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The following are some of his comments:

Q: A:

Q:

You have talked about your struggles the past year or two and trying to get things straightened out and back on track. Is it a good thing that you guys have a new car, or is that going to be another issue that you guys are going to have to deal with? “I think the timing of the car is good for us as a company. I think that by anybody’s measurements, we didn’t have a good year throughout the company last year. We went almost the whole year without winning a race. Kevin (Harvick) won really late in the year. So for us, I think it’s easier when there is a whole new car with a lot of new rules.”

Caribbean. Club Med membership fees of $60 per adult and $30 per child are additional. For more information, call 1-888-932-2582 or talk to your travel agent. The National Park Service (www.nps.gov) manages parks all over the country. Whether you prefer the mountains, seashore or places in between, the national parks have a lot to offer. At the website you can search by state or features of interest. As an example, if you enter “cabins” in the search box, you’ll be shown a list of all the parks with a variety of cabins to rent, ranging from those which are designated as historical landmarks and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, to those that are fully modern with electricity, hot water and central air conditioning. Search by state, and you’ll see a list of all parks in the state, further searchable by areas of interest. Click each dot on the map and you’ll be shown information on individual locations. You’ll be directed to www.recreation. gov to make online reservations. Specify your location and dates, and you’ll be shown the availability. The longer you want to reserve a space, the more flexible you’ll need to be with your travel dates. mature mature cat cat

When you’re ready to adopt, consider me, a mature refined adult cat. Sure, kittens are cute, but we don’t require constant supervision. Even though we are less energetic, we are less likely to be destructive, yet enjoy a good play session. In fact, running the Indy 500 in the middle of the night is not really the thrill that it used to be. Let’s not forget, we are probably already neutered, spayed and possibly declawed, not to mention vaccinated. We understand the concept of approval and reward unlike kittens, and we typically are already well versed in household manners. Let’s face it, we’re just plain more stable, ready for loving and know how to enjoy quiet times. If that doesn’t flip your catnip mousey, consider this: adopting an adult cat is a great way to teach your kids compassion and unselfishness.

The first staplers were developed for King Louis XV of France during the 1700s. They were handmade, and every staple was inscribed with the insignia of the royal court. In 1866, a paper faster was developed which used a single staple at a time, mostly for binding books and boxes. Other versions were developed over the next few decades, some with brass fasteners, some that weighed over two and a half pounds. The current version of the stapler was invented by John Munford in the mid-1900s.

10 Fun Facts About FROGS

One gram of the toxin produced by the skin of the golden poison dart frog could kill 100,000 people. A frog completely sheds its skin about once a week. After it pulls off the old, dead skin, the frog usually eats it. When Darwin’s frog tadpoles hatch, a male frog swallows the tadpoles. He keeps the tiny amphibians in his vocal sac for about 60 days to allow them to grow. He then proceeds to cough up tiny, fully formed frogs. When a frog swallows its prey, it blinks, which pushes its eyeballs down on top of the mouth to help push the food down its throat. The glass frog has translucent skin, so you can see its internal organs, bones and muscles through its skin. You can even observe its heart beating and its stomach digesting food. The biggest frog in the world is the Goliath frog. It lives in West Africa and can measure more than a foot in length and weigh more than 7 pounds – as much as a newborn baby. The red-eyed tree frog lays it eggs on the underside of leaves that hang over water. When the eggs hatch, the tadpoles fall into the water below. One way to tell a male frog from a female frog is by looking at its ears. The ears can be found right behind the frog’s eyes. If the ears are as big as the eyes, then the frog is a male. If the ears are smaller than the frog’s eyes, then the frog is a female. Frogs don't drink water but absorb it through their skin. Some tree frogs live their whole lives in the trees, and never come down. They even lay their eggs in the tree branches or on leaves.

Book Summer Vacation Early The earlier you finalize your summer vacation plans, the better chance you have to lock in lower rates and avoid disappointment later. Here are a few ideas of what’s available: Disney World (disneyw o r l d . d i s n e y. g o . c o m ) : Enjoy a four-day, threenight stay with the 2013 Magic Your Way Package for $1,505 for a family of four — two adults, one junior (age 10-17) and one child (age 3-9). You’ll stay in one of the value resorts and have tickets to one of the four theme parks every day. Be aware of what is not included: the water park, children’s centers, meals, Cirque du Soleil, select tours and access to the golf course. Those cost more, although you will be given discounts to the spa, children’s center, fishing excursion and more. Only certain dates apply, so book early. Club Med (www.clubmed. us) — Starting in May 2013, children under age 4 can go for free. Book quickly and you can have a seven-night, all-inclusive vacation for $699 per person. “All-inclusive” means nearly everything is included: accommodations, meals, snacks and activities. The available period is from Aug. 24 to April 27, 2014, at resorts in Florida, Mexico and the

Shingles Pain Lingers After Rash Is Gone DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two years ago I had shingles, and I now suffer the aftereffects of it. The sores went away in a month, but the stinging, burning, throbbing pain is still with me. I cannot wear clothing over the affected shoulder. No medicines have eased the pain so far. Is there any help? — M.L. ANSWER: You now are dealing with postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the shingles rash has gone. The virus that causes shingles is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Almost every adult on this continent harbors that virus, now called herpes zoster. It lives on in nerve cells. From time to time, at older ages, it wakens from its hibernation, travels down the nerve to the skin and causes an outbreak of blisters on a red base. The outbreak goes away in about three weeks. Pain can linger for a long time — months, to years. In traveling down the nerve, the virus damaged it. I can list some of the postherpetic neuralgia medicines. Two are antidepressants — nortriptyline and amitriptyline — given not for depression but for pain relief. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is another antidepressant that can lessen postherpetic pain. Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-seizure medicine that’s approved for this problem. Neurontin (gabapentin) is another seizure medicine used for

control of the lingering pain of shingles. Capsaicin lotion, cream or gel (Zostrix, Capsin, RGel) is applied directly to the involved skin. A higher concentration of capsaicin comes as a patch that’s applied in the doctor’s office, left on for an hour and then removed. Treatment can be repeated in three months. It’s called Qutenza. Another skin patch is the Lidoderm patch. The latest medicine is Gralise, an extended-release form of gabapentin — Neurontin. It requires fewer doses. The entire shingles story is covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I get my calcium by drinking milk. I believe natural sources are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. The problem is that whole milk raises my cholesterol. My father died of a heart attack at a young age. Does skim milk have as much calcium as whole milk? — R.T. ANSWER: Skim milk contains a little more calcium than whole milk. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 291 mg of calcium. The same amount of skim milk has 300 mg. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Festive Tossed Salad Written by Todd J. Tranum, President & CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier Chautauqua County can truly take a bow this month. Two major sporting events filmed locally have given our region a chance to shine on national television. The recent Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular televised on NBC on January 6 featured some of the tops names in both sports. Filmed at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena on December 15th, the production featured 2012 All Around Olympic Gold medalist Gabby Douglas along with other 2012 Olympic competitors; Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, John Orozco, Danell Leyva, Jonathan Horton and Jake Dalton, as well as 2008 All Around Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin. The lineup of figure skaters included World champions and 2010 Olympic ice dance silver medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White, current U.S. singles champions Jeremy Abbott and Ashley Wagner, two-time U.S. champion Alissa Czisny, World ice dance bronze medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani, 2012 U.S. silver medalist Adam Rippon and up-and-coming elite skater Gracie Gold. Also performing during the show was Fresh Beat Band of the Nickelodeon show with the same name, and Ross Lynch of Disney’s “Austin and Ally” with his band R5. Olympic champions Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci and Peggy Fleming hosted the show. The glitzy production was filmed before a sold out and wildly cheering crowd in the Arena. We commend the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena for an outstanding job on this event! Coming up next weekend, NBC viewers will get a chance to see a different side of Chautauqua County, when the final event of Jack Link’s Major League Fishing’s Summit Cup will be televised at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 9. The Major League Fishing crew and support staff have been raving both online and on the Outdoor Channel about the beauty of Chautauqua Lake as an extraordinary fishing destination, as well as the hospitality they received during filming here last August. Please join us Saturday for a Major League Fishing watch party at Bellini Lounge at Chautauqua Suites as we celebrate this tremendous event. The party begins at noon with free lunch and a cash bar. This event is sponsored by the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, Chautauqua Marina, and Webb’s Year Round Resort. You can register online through www.chautauquachamber.org or by calling the Chamber at 4841101. It is easy when you live somewhere to take it for granted. It becomes a little more exciting when you look at the assets in your own backyard through the eyes of others. We should remind ourselves more often that the quality of life we enjoy in Chautauqua County is a privilege, and that our area’s natural beauty, sports and recreational opportunities, and offerings in the arts and education truly do make us special. We are very lucky to call Chautauqua County our home, and to show it off this way for the rest of the country. The Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce will present a number of awards to local businesses during its annual Salute to the Finest on Tuesday, February 12. The award winners are: Manufacturer of the Year – Hope’s Windows, Inc.; Retailer of the Year – Jamestown Mattress Company; Community Service Award – John Bauer; Pride of Jamestown Award – Gateway Station; Business of the Year – Robo Enterprises, Inc.; Service to Humanity Award – Eastside YMCA; New Business of the Year – Patient’s Pharmacy. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Lillian V. Ney Renaissance Center, 19 West Third Street. The cost is $20 for a heavy hors d’oeuvre buffet with a cash bar. You can register through the events calendar at www.chautauquachamber.org or by calling the Chamber at 484-1101.

Once again, a full slate of winter events is being planned for the Presidents Day Weekend Winter Festival in Mayville – one of the largest winter festivals in the region – which is organized annually by the Mayville/Chautauqua Community Chamber of Commerce. The lineup includes snowmobile rides, a flare parade, fireworks, kids’ corner crafts, chili cook-off, kids snow slides, snowball distance throwing contest, snowman/animal making contest, ice carving, broomball, snowshoe demonstrations, a polar bear swim, presidential costumer contest, a snowball dance, and lighting of the ice castle. Many of these events will be held weather permitting. Major sponsors of the Presidents Day Weekend Winter Festival are: Media One Group, Town of Chautauqua, Clark Patterson Lee Architectural Engineering Firm/Habiterra, Operating Engineers Local 17- Apprenticeship Program, Felony Entertainment LLC, Chautauqua Suites-Olives Restaurant-Bellini Lounge, Lakeview Hotel/The Docks Restaurant, and Chautauqua Marina. Platinum Sponsors are: M & T Bank Mayville Branch, Webb’s Captain’s Table Restaurant and The Cottage Collection, and Lictus Keystone. For a complete schedule of events and sponsors, please visit the Winter Festival event page at www.chautauquachamber.org.

The Community Chamber Development Corporation, an Affiliate of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce, is helping to provide answers to insurance questions through the Small Business Assistance Program. SBAP is an initiative of the Community Service Society (CSS), a network of organizations across New York State that helps consumers and small business get affordable health care and health insurance. Through SBAP we can provide health reform information and training for employers and one-on-one consultations on insurance options, costs, tax credits, enrollment, dispute resolution, and more. If you have a small business and are looking for direct answers to questions about insurance, including new regulations surrounding the Affordable Care Act, tax credits, and more, please call CCDC at 366-6200 or 484-1101 for more information.

The teams that have never made it to the Super Bowl are: • Cleveland Browns (The original Browns won 4 of 6 NFL championship appearances and went to 3 AFC championships: 1986, 1987, and 1989. Then they became the Baltimore Ravens and won a Super Bowl. The new Browns team is an expansion team that began in 1999, and lost their only playoff game in 2002) • Houston Texans (Expansion team; never made the playoffs) • Jacksonville Jaguars (Expansion team; went to 2 AFC Championships, in 1996 and 1999) • Detroit Lions (Won 4 NFL championships and went to the NFC Championship in 1991) ~~~~~~ As of the 2010 Super Bowl, 14 of the 32 NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl: Minnesota Vikings (0-4) Buffalo Bills (0-4) Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) Philadelphia Eagles (0-2) Tennessee Titans (0-1) San Diego Chargers (0-1) Atlanta Falcons (0-1) Carolina Panthers (0-1) Arizona Cardinals (0-1) Seattle Seahawks (0-1) Cleveland Browns Houston Texans Jacksonville Jaguars Detroit Lions Technically the Chiefs and the Jets only won Super Bowls as AFL teams and never as NFL teams. ~~~~~~ The Pittsburgh Steelers have won six Super Bowls, the most of any team. ~~~~~~ The closest Super Bowl ever was Super Bowl XXV played on January 27, 1991. The Bills lost by 1 point: Giants 20, Buffalo 19. Scott Norwood, Buffalo’s kicker, attempted a field goal from 47 yards away but the kick went wide right.

DEATHS IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS

• Bill Masterton, a hockey player for the Minnesota North Star, died in 1968 as the result of a head injury. He fell over backwards and hit his head on the ice after being checked during a game against the Oakland Seals. His is the only death in pro-hockey during the modern era. • Raymond Johnson Chapman , A Cleveland Indians baseball player, died in 1920, one day after being struck in head by baseball pitch, becoming the only player ever killed as result of major league baseball game.

CUTTING COMMUNICATIONS

This hand was played in a rubber-bridge game more than half a century ago. The heroine was Ruth Sherman, winner of several national championships in the 1940s and ‘50s. Sherman reached four spades doubled as shown, and West led the jack of hearts. Declarer played low from dummy, and East took the ace and returned a heart to dummy’s king.

It was obvious to Sherman that East had started with a doubleton heart and was poised to ruff the next heart lead. Had declarer led a trump at this point, East would have taken the ace and put West in with a club to obtain the heart ruff that sets the contract. But Sherman found a way to prevent West from ever gaining the lead and thereby circumvented the heart ruff. East’s two-notrump bid marked him with both the king of diamonds and ace of spades. So at trick three, Sherman cashed the ace of diamonds and then led the queen. This forced East to cover with the king, whereupon declarer discarded her singleton club! East returned a club, but the chicken had flown the coop. Sherman ruffed, forced out the ace of spades, ruffed the club return, drew trumps and ran her hearts to make the doubled contract. Her only losers were a heart, a spade and a diamond. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

the food we eat.” Andrea’s Syrian grandmother, Nahima (Abouid) Albert, immigrated to the United States shortly after marrying her husband, Antonio in 1926. They owned and operated a corner grocery store in Miami. This is where young Andrea spent her childhood days while her mother and father went to work. It was there at Nahima’s knee that Andrea says she learned about hospitality and cooking. Her grandmother worked all day in the grocery store, and still found the time to cook dinner for her parents to take home. Andrea witnessed her grandmother’s selfless love and compassion daily. She was always in the kitchen helping her grandmother prepare food. Nahima passed away in 2009. She lived to be 101. Her grandmother’s love and talents with food inspired Andrea to create “Nahima’s Hands: Unique Mediterranean Cuisine.” While she includes many of the Mediterranean dishes that she learned from her

My favorite kinds of cookbooks are ones that have been inspired by family recipes. I enjoy reading the stories about the family member that prepared the dishes in the cookbook and trying the recipes that have been passed down from one generation to the next. “Nahima’s Hands: Unique Mediterranean Cuisine by Andrea Cassell is a loving tribute to her grandmother (Nahima) and her flavorful, Mediterranean recipes. What started out as a granddaughter’s love for her grandmother and a desire for her four children, and subsequent generations, to carry on these cooking traditions is now a moving tribute to family and Mediterranean cuisine. Andrea says that she wants people to read her cookbook and say “this looks easy and I can create this without a lot of work.” She also wants to encourage families to come back to the table. She says that the cookbook is not just about food, but about “our heritage, friends and families coming together through
