YOUR GO-GO Go-go dancers are a fixture in nearly every gay scene around the world. When they’re not on stage swinging their wares in your face, they’re plastered all over Instagram flaunting their bodies and wild ways. We are, of course, being deeply sarcastic; because Attitude knows go-gos are actually human beings with minds and emotions who just enjoy the disco – a lot. Here we interview four of the scene’s finest performers.

IMMA/MESS Who is Imma/Mess? Imma/Mess is just a fantasy version of myself. Me but MORE. Where are you from? I’m from Montgomery, Alabama, USA. I moved to London last March. What’s your look in five words? Mega alien walking on heels We love the name. What was the inspiration? Drunk people in the club being a mess and always coming up to me saying, “OMG...I’M SUCH A MESS!” You’ve made a name for yourself dancing at some of London’s most outrageous places like Sink The Pink, Savage and even The Box. How did you get into the game of entertaining the clubbing masses? I needed money between serious art making and found it a good excuse to try out diferent makeup looks and experiment with who I wanted to be. When you’re on stage you feel… Mega! Major! What judgments do people make about you when they first meet you? That I’m stuck-up or unbothered, when really I am just quiet or in my own head thinking about the next look. You’re transitioning. Do you find the process difficult or exciting? Exciting! To finally walk in the right direction after so many years; it feels great. Are you close to your family? How did your parents take the news of your transitioning? I ran away from home when I was 16. I never looked back. So my decisions are solely mine to make and own. Was getting their acceptance important to you? Absolutely not! They can pay a bill first before I’ll care. What phrase encapsulates your view on life? Dare to be. Finish this sentence. Love is… Intangible.

ARCHANGEL The best thing about being a go-go is… Meeting amazing people and seeing incredible places around the world. How did you get involved with the Beyond crew? I had worked with Martin Princess before, but most of the other guys I met through common friends. They saw me dancing and invited me to join the team. The most amazing gig you’ve ever done was at… The Barcelona Circuit Festival Aquapark. Great music; the sun shining bright and 10, 000 people watching… It’s hard to compare that to anything else. When you’re on stage you feel… Like a star? [Laughs] I’m joking. I feel in my element. I belong there. I love seeing people happy and smiling at me. I feel happy. Do you ever feel like people judge you because of being a go-go boy? Definitely, yes. I have heard the most absurd things you can imagine for being a go-go dancer. Many of us have a degree and a nine to five job. We are just normal people with a slightly unconventional job. But in the end it doesn’t matter because we are surrounded by friends and don’t really want to be close to people with little, simple minds anyway. How does it feel to be objectified by those in the club? It can be annoying sometimes, when people come and try to touch you. Once someone came from behind and pulled my swimwear down while I was on stage. I was naked and furious.

96

Do you secretly enjoy it? It is no secret. I love it. Who doesn’t like being desired? [Laughs] Everybody likes a little bit of attention, it feeds your ego. That is not enough though. I don’t get flattered by compliments to my body. I prefer compliments to my work and character. The best thing about the gay scene is… The incredible people from all over the world we get to meet. … but the worst thing is… to see how a community which sufers so much prejudice can also inflict prejudice on its own subgroups. It is sad. Your most embarrassing stage moment happened when… I had to wear a C-String for the WE Party ‘Erotica’ event. When I stepped on the stage it went loose. You must get a lot of guys cracking onto you. How does that afect being in a relationship? Well, I am newly single so it really isn’t a problem right now. But when I am in a relationship I am really faithful, respectful and loyal. If you could be trapped in a lift with anybody else in the world, who would it be? Does it have to be only one? I don’t know. Should I say Chris Hemsworth? Or someone I am deeply in love with? What phrase encapsulates your view on life? Love and life, don’t take them for granted. Finish the sentence: Love is… …precious and I fight ‘til the end to preserve it. Beyond is at Ministry of Sound every Sunday morning from 5am.

TED ROGERS What’s your look in five words? Cute, Fag, Slutty, Gang War. When you’re on stage you feel… High – and it’s all natural Do you ever feel like people judge you because of being a go-go boy? Nope. How does it feel to be objectified by those in the club? If you treat me like an object then I’m the first to tell you where to go... and it’s not in my pants! Do you secretly enjoy it? I prefer conversation. The worst thing about being on stage is… People who make assumptions and people who spank you because your ass is out and they think you’re fair game. If you spanked a female performer in a club you’d get knocked the fuck out or removed immediately. My genitals shouldn’t lessen the respect factor. But I guess some people are still a bit basic. I exercise a ‘look don’t touch’ policy. Unless you’re invited. … but the best thing about it is… In the right environment it’s one of the most liberating and intense natural highs I continue to experience in life. It brings joy to myself and others. And it’s punk as fuck. Your most embarrassing stage moment happened when… I don’t have embarrassing moments. I style out any trips, falls and costume mishaps. It’s called “performance art!” The most amazing gig you’ve ever done was at… Glitterbox at Space, Ibiza The ultimate song to shake yer thang on stage to is… Work Me! Gadamit ‘96 by Armand Van Helden. If you were Prime Minister for the day the three things you’d change would be… Queer Rights would be fully respected and enforced. There’s enough space on the bench for all of us thank you very much. The schooling system would nourish and encourage thinkers instead of breeding conformist machines. And I would replace all adverts that support drinking culture and national ignorance with adverts for broccoli and house music. If you could be trapped in a lift with anybody else in the world, who would it be? Plato, my mate Gordon and someone with a nice willy. Finish the sentence: Love is… Complicated.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE? Well, mainly I just do cardio. I run for twenty minutes four or five times a week, and that also includes body exercises – chin ups, pull ups and push ups, and also some abs work like planks and side planks. I don’t go to the gym because I don’t want to get too big; I want to keep lean and I tend to gain muscle quite quickly. DO YOU DO MOST OF YOUR EXERCISE OUTDOORS? Yeah, in my local park. It’s quite easy. I do it early in the mornings before I eat so it helps to burn fat rather than energy. If I eat before it would burn the energy not the fat. The first time you do it in the morning it can be hard, but you get used to it. As soon as the fresh air hits you, you get energy and you’re all set for it then. IS THAT YOU DONE FOR THE DAY? Yeah, I just eat healthy and that’s it really. I’m not a gym bunny or anything. TALK ME THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL FOOD ROUTINE. Well, after a workout I have breakfast and that’s usually muesli or cereal; like porridge and bran flakes, stuff like that. For lunch I have sweet potato along with some tuna or sardines. Sweet potato has lots of nutrients and minerals. Then for dinner I would normally have rice with chicken or something else, like potatoes or vegetables, but I’ll always have some type of meat. I don’t usually eat red meat all the time; I’ll vary between white meat and fish depending on my mood. I’ve heard that red meat is good for bulking while white meat and fish is better for leaning. ARE YOU NOW AT THE SIZE YOU WANT TO STAY AT? Yeah, around there, I don’t want to get too small or too big. I IMAGINE YOU DON’T SNACK VERY OFTEN? I do sometimes; it’s hard not to snack. I have cheat days like everyone else, so maybe like once a week – sometimes once every two weeks. It depends. It could be a random thing where I need energy. Eating healthily all the time is tough and your body just craves something ‘bad’ every now and then. If I do indulge I make sure that the next day I go back to working out. It kind of rejuvenates things because once you eat the bad food the body kicks in to burn it off. If I’m snacking I just have some cashew nuts. DIET IS THE PART MOST PEOPLE FIND DIFFICULT, ISN’T IT? RATHER THAN EXERCISE. Food is the most difficult because anyone can go to the gym or workout, but I feel if you can workout and burn 400 calories, you can put that back on so easily just by eating a certain meal. You need to really watch what you’re eating because if you really want to
