THE KNARR GATE ‘OLD TARMAC LEGS’

Sitting on the site of the old Strand Gate, the Old Borough Arms was where the customs office for Rye was Located. The Strand Gate was the main entrance for the town, but the receding of the sea since the 14th century saw its influence wane. Its influence continued to diminish up until the early 18th century where it was then taken down. The Old Borough Arms was erected in its place in 1720. It incorporated some of the old gate and town wall into its structure which is still visible today. From then on, the Old Borough arms became a popular bed & breakfast, pub, and chippy. The continued use of fossil fuels and the worlds inaction to prevent climate change saw the sea take back the land that was once hers. The continued melting of the ice caps caused Rye to once again be surrounded by the seas – sitting at the crossroads between the North Sea and the English Channel. The rising of the seas turned Rye into a thriving and idyllic seaside town, and the pub was renamed to recall its land-dwelling past. However, the rising sea levels caused a mass global humanitarian crisis – with tens of millions of climate refugees displaced around the globe. Recalling its medieval fame, Rye once again became a centre for smuggling. The humanitarian crisis prompted the reintroduction of the Strand Gate. Now named the ‘Knarr Gate’ after the boats of Cnut the Great who ruled England from 1016-1035. The gate incorporates some of the Old Tarmac Legs, just as the Old Borough Arms incorporated the old Strand Gate. The Old Tarmac Legs once again became the customs house and entrance into the town of Rye.
