Summertime One-On-One Time
Don’t have to work today? Have fun with your kids this summer … without breaking the bank. ■ Explore the outdoors: Enjoying nature is always free. Whether it’s checking out Chattanooga’s trails or cycling in a local park, experience the great outdoors as a family. Visit outdoorchattanooga.com for free upcoming events, including the Chickamauga Battlefield bicycle tours in May, June and July. ■ Take a trip to the market: This will require a small amount of cash, but the next time you want fresh and local produce and products, bring the kids along to your area farmers market. The Sunday Chattanooga Market, which runs throughout the summer from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is a good bet — in addition to various artisans and other vendors, there is live entertainment and often special activities. Let your little lambs help pick out the best fare, and afterward, take a blanket and your farmer finds to a nearby park for a relaxing family picnic. ■ Visit the zoo in June: The Chattanooga Zoo is hosting 30 days of activities and events that are free with the $8.95 admission fee. Activities include gardening, safari photography, a new animal show and more. For more information visit chattzoo.org. ■ Discover a new park: The Scenic City and surrounding area is home to several green spaces and parks. From the Pumpkin Patch on Signal Mountain to the Tennessee Riverwalk and Riverpark in the heart of downtown, drive the few extra miles to explore a new park in Chattanooga. For a listing of local parks, visit chattanooga.gov/parks-and-recreation/parks/directory-of-park-facilities. ■ Pique your child’s interest in the fine arts with the Hunter Museum of American Art’s Free First Sundays: From noon to 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month, admission to the museum is free. Learn more at huntermuseum.org.
The slip n’ slide tarp is a favorite at COOL Camp.
