concepts MULTIMEDIA THEATRE FINDING PROGRAM THE ARGUMENT 1. A COMMUNITY CENTER IS A GATHERING PLACE WITH AN ATTRACTION(S). 2. ELOY HAS A NEED FOR A GATHERING PLACE BUT WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION TO BRING THEM TOGETHER? 3. THE OLD THEATRE WAS ONCE A GATHERING PLACE AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE SO AGAIN (AS PEOPLE STILL GO SEE MOVIES). 4. THE THEATRE WAS A PLACE FOR LISTENING TO STORIES THROUGH FILM MEDIA. 5. ELOY HAS A LACK OF MEDIA TYPES AND PLACES TO VIEW/USE THEM; WHERE ARE THE MUSEUMS, PERFORMANCE HALL, LECTURE HALL, PUBLIC SPACES, GALERIES? 6. ELOY’S COMMUNITY CENTER COULD BE A GATHERING PLACE WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF MEDIA TYPES WHICH WOULD SERVE AS THE ATTRACTIONS. 7. TODAY MEDIA IS LESS BOUND TO PLACE AND TIME. 8. STILL PLACE AND TIME MATTERS. 9. E.G THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LISTENING TO A SPEECH LIVE VERSUS ON T.V. OR WATCHING A MOVIE ON YOUR PHONE VERSUS IN A THEATRE. 10. WHAT MAKES PLACES AND TIMES BETTER OR WORSE SUITED FOR CERTAIN MEDIA? 11. ARCHITECTURE CONTROLS THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS. 12. E.G LIGHT, CLIMATE, ENCLOSURE, SCALE, VIEWS, PROXIMITY TO NATURE... 13. IF WE ARE GOING TO HAVE DIFFERENT MEDIA TYPES IT FOLLOWS THAT WE NEED DIFFERENT PLACES AND TIMES. 14. TO CREATE THIS, WE CAN HYBRIDIZE ARCHITECTURE TYPOLOGIES 15. E.G PODIUM FUSED WITH A COURTYARD WRAPPED AROUND A THEATRE.

The podium as a stage Creating places based on media. A theatre is a space created for film media. A cafe is a space created for conversation media. The idea is to create a project which rounds up variety of media. Since the possibilities are infinite, flexible space and overlap are necessary.

Inhabited podium Eloy’s downtown grid is similar to radial grids used by older and established cities found in Europe & the eastern U.S. This method of urban planning is often accompanied by a series of buildings, arches, and statues located at major intersections. These objects acts as markers for the city, because of this they are often elevated on podiums, these podiums usually serve as a gathering space. The concept of this project is to insert a podium on to the site to promote the theatre’s historical identity and create a gathering complex with a museum, restaurant, media lab, retail, and large plaza area. Although a podium can be a strong image the climate does not allow for it, instead merging a podium with a courtyard to create an inhabited podium would prove well suited.

The media lab and archives of the museum is open to the public, to preserve the theatre building, the media lab stands apart from the theatre. This separation becomes the entry to the media lab. Southern light is let in through floor to ceiling windows. The media lab is accessed through main street and independent of the museum, to allow for more flexible hours.

The Dust Bowl theatre is an important part of Eloy’s history. The design utilizes a podium to emphasize this, however the design is carefull no to overtake and preserve the theatre. by fragmenting the podium the theatre is left intact.
